    Simple Questions - October 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:13 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Ryzen draft gaming build for high~max settings @ 1440p - first timer

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:31 AM PDT

Hello everyone, this is my first time building a PC after gaming on three different laptops for about 11 years, with my current one being an ASUS ROG running a Sandy Bridge processor and a GTX560M. I have been miserable for so long with sub-30fps games and I want to be sad no more with my new PC. Right now, it's basically close to pixelation on Path of Exile!

I am aiming for a high FPS build (about 100?) with close to or max settings at 1440p on a 34inch ultrawide with Gsync (Acer's X34P) playing mainly single player. Despite having no real budget, I am not willing to pay extra for redundant or overkill parts, so my build below is trying to reflect that, such as pairing a 2600X with an RTX2080 on a B450 motherboard. Same reason why I went with a Ryzen 5 over an i5. I would ask that you allow me to indulge in a little RGB in the form of case fans though ;). I have no immediate plans to OC hence why I went with the MSI B450 (i need the wifi..and it seemed to have good reviews). Being able to do simple multitasking is important for me, such as having Discord or even web browsers with multiple tabs open on my second monitor while I game on my ultrawide.

Right now I would love to have some feedback on my build. Here are some concerns:

    • 1.) Would the 2600X's stock cooler be good enough for gaming in a tropical climate (+/-10% 30°C/86°F)? Cooling is important but I don't know if I should go all out on a good cooler for a non-OCer.

      • 2.) Many people talk about OC-ing. With my build, can I get away with not OC-ing for many years seeing that the GPU is the main bottleneck anyway? Has anyone ever changed their minds about not OC-ing?
      • 3.) I have no plans to upgrade my CPU, MoBo and GPU in the foreseeable future unless there is a good reason to do so (if Ryzen 2 is amazing, then why not?). Is my build adequately future-ready? Do I need to change some parts now to make it more future-ready? The X470 vs B450 thing is making me scratch my head over and over.
      • 4.) The RAM has Samsung b-die and it's 3200mhz CL14. However, it isn't on the MSI B450's QVL list. The RAM is the cheapest and has good reviews too. Think it is worth risking it?
      • 5.) I plan to have 3x 120mm Corsair RGB fans as front intake and 1x 140mm fan + Meshify C's stock 120mm fan at the back and rear-top exhaust respectively for positive pressure. Good idea?

Note: I'm aware of the RTX2080 vs 1080ti debate. I'm just putting a GPU that I'm more likely to get as sort of a placeholder first while I slowly make a final decision.

I look forward to reading your feedback and learn from you all. If I'm forgetting anything else, please let me know.

    Did I mess up my monitor choice? 2 - 2560x1440 60hz Monitors with GTX 1060 6gb.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:08 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So I have purchased everything, but I'm a bit worried I might have messed up with my monitor choice. In addition to the 1060 6gb, I have a ryzen 7 2700x. I mostly just play League of Legends, code, watch videos and other random things on my computer.

    1) Would I be able to play League and have websites on my other monitor without any issues?

    2) Would I be able to see the benefit of 1440 when not playing League and, say, just browsing the internet or watching videos?

    The importance of an ssd.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:27 AM PDT

So i've got a decent pc, it's got a 1060 and run games nicely, but i've always had a problem. And that was everything was so damn slow. Booting took 5-10 minutes before i could open anything, 30 second mp4 files took 30 seconds just to open, it was just torture, everything was delayed. So a few days ago i said "screw it" and purchased an ssd. I've been using it for about 30 minutes after installing everything and oh my god, it's so much nicer of an experience than just the hard drive. Everything is snappy, nothing is delayed, the pc boots super fast, it's just an all around great experience. So yea, get an ssd, it'll be the best purchase you make guaranteed.

Is it better to spend more on a better processor with integrated graphics and buy a dedicated GPU down the line?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:07 AM PDT

Hi all, apologies if its been asked before.

Basically I want to build my first PC - at the moment I do very light gaming (LoL only really), planning to make a switch to PC gaming once my PS4 expires (obligatory "PC MASTER RACE", trust me I know this).

So my question is basically in the title: Is it better to spend more on a better processor with integrated graphics and wait for a GPU when I need it, or to buy a cheaper processor with a lower end GPU? I am based in the UK and would only want to spend around £500.

    Thanks in advance!

Samsung 860 vs 970 EVO? The 860 is a little cheaper, is it worth getting the 970?

Second-hand GPUs - prudent or false economy?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:38 AM PDT

What is your experience win second-hand GPUs? Do they save you money over the long-run even considering they might not last as long? How do you separate the wheat from the chaff?

I'm doing my first build and because the games I want to play right now aren't that demanding, I'm considering looking a 2nd-hand GTX 1060 to start me off then upgrade as and when I need. The advantage of it being 2nd-hand is that I've invested less and will feel like I could upgrade sooner than if I'd spent less on the first card.

To put some context around that, the 1060 6GB there are a few sales on atm for £220 and most of the 2nd hand ones on eBay are like £150. It's not a huge price difference but not nothing either.

Or for an extra £50 (£270) I can get a used 1070 which although I don't need that much power for the two games I have now, it might be a bit more 'future-proof'

Interested to know the thoughts of those with experience on these matters!

Upgrading from a GTX 970 to an RTX 2080. What PSU do I need?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:57 PM PDT

Hi. I want to upgrade my GPU. I don't really know anything about power supplies, other than the 500W one that came in my pre-built probably won't cut it for an RTX 2080.

    Here's my current computer: https://www.microcenter.com/product/457543/powerspec-g416-desktop-computer

I want to upgrade the GPU to an RTX 2080 and add a 1TB SSD. I'll also be switching from a standard 1080p montior to a 1440p, 144hz, g sync monitor.

What PSU should I get? I imagine a 650W would do, but I don't know which 650W is good. Money isn't really an issue, but I'd like to spend only as much as I need to get something solid and reliable. I'd like to stick to EVGA, since that's already the brand I've got.

Also, will I need to buy anything in addition to the PSU? Like an enclosure or new cables or something? I'll probably just pay micro center $50 to install it, cause I'm really not looking to fuck around with that many cables.

Is a Strix gtx 1070 OC too big for a dq77mk mobo?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:45 PM PDT

I am using all the ram slots, how ever i'm unsure if the gpu will fit on it. My case is big enough, but not so sure about the motherboard.

This is how the mobo looks like

My current gpu is a 1060 palit dual fan and its 2 slots wide. According to asus, the strix is also 2 slots wide how ever i'm unsure if it will fit due to the back plate on the gpu.

I tried measuring but I am still uncertain, so I would really love if anyone could give me some advice, thanks.

    Help choosing new RAM

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:31 AM PDT

I'm looking to start (slowly but steadily) upgrading my pc. I have 2x4GB of this ddr4 ram and I'm looking to upgrade to 8gb more. This is all planning to eventually buy a GTX 1080 on black friday and start playing at 144hz or 4k in a near future. I'm just really confused about all this ''matching ram'' stuff, I don't wanna buy sticks that end up not working with the ones I already have. This is my motherboard and this is my CPU.

Can I mix 2133 and 2400 speed RAM modules..?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 12:04 PM PDT

    Hi all, happy hallowe'en..!

Long story short, I bought a twin pack of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 8GB 2133mhz, used off eBay.

One module has failed, was getting BSOD's (ran win10 memory diagnostic on both seperately, only one reported a hardware problem)

Can I replace the faulty 2133 with a single 8GB 2400, and then slow it down in BIOS to match the other 2133..?

    Any help much appreciated.

Ready to buy parts and build a gaming PC. $1,600-1,700 budget. Would like some more opinions before I pull the trigger.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:56 PM PDT

I'm finally at the point where I'm ready to buy parts and build my first PC. Originally I wanted to wait until Black Friday but at this point I figure no time is better than the present, plus I already have a mouse, keyboard and monitor. I submitted a request to r/buildapcforme and am using one of the suggested builds as a starting point. Shout out to everyone that helps out on that sub, it made me less anxious about choosing parts. Any input is appreciated!

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, especially roguelike and open world games. RimWorld, Mount & Blade: Warband, Dead Cells, Dungeon of the Endless, etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

The ability to play the above games on fairly high graphical settings. Honestly I'll sacrifice graphics details for smooth running gameplay if that makes sense.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1,600-1,700

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA, Texas

    Would a Ryzen 7 2700 with a 1080 be a good fit?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:15 PM PDT

I will play at 1080p 144hz. Would these two fit well together? I want to be able to get at least 100fps on some recent games like Black Ops 4. I don't care too much about my settings so if I have to lower them that's fine. Anyone else with a similar build?

    Here's my full build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7g9cmq

Before anyone says it, I know I need to upgrade my PSU before upgrading my GPU.

    PCIe Ethernet Card

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:26 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm looking for the best PCIe Ethernet card with at least dual gigabit ports that support Jumbo frames and link aggregation. I've found many cards myself but wanted some opinions on the best one to get that supports NIC teaming (to have both ethernet ports act as one). Or a card that allows the two ports to be configured to handle certain traffic ie. one port for gaming, and the other for steaming/browsing the web or one port for general use and the other for VPN connection. I'm not sure if such a card exists but I think this would be the place to ask to find out.

    Thanks

Screen not getting signal when i turn on new build

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:57 PM PDT

Hey there reddit, new pc builder here.

I just built my first PC with a friend of mine, but when we turn it on there is no signal to the screen. We have double checked everything, every part, every cable placement and so on, everything is where it should be.

We were thinking that it could be because of the parts i chose though. I got the new i5-9600k together with the motherboard ASUS B360 TUF GAMING PRO (WIFI), which is where we think the problem could be, since the bios in the motherboard might not be updated. Any of you have an idea if this is the problem, or if its something else?

Any idea on what the problem could be ? The fact that it does it only every once in a while is making me clueless. It gets stuck as in, Windows doesnt load and pressing del or F1 does nothing. Windows is installed on the SSD and it's set up as the primary boot drive in the BIOS, and as far as I can tell, everything in plugged in correctly.

Anyone else get CPU/GPU temp. paranoia?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:38 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I recently inherited a PC from my brother. It has an i7-8700 and a 1070Ti. This is my first time having an 'actual' computer, so I'm trying to take good care of it. I think the temperatures make me really paranoid though. I see my CPU temperatures running up to the 75-80 range when under load and maybe it's because I'm unfamiliar with computers, but that seems quite hot. I did some reading and everyone says those temperatures are fine but I can't help but feel paranoid that something's going to break. Anyone else feel the same way?

    Hi all!

I wanted to thank you for your support here - active, with commenting my posts and passive, when I lurked in this sub.

I have managed to complete my build:

    PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KRGY8Y

    CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4GHz 6-Core Processor ($159.89 @ OutletPC)

Video Card: PNY - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Video Card

Power Supply: be quiet! - System Power 8 600W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply

(also silentiumpc case, ADATA SSD and HDD are storages I've already had)

And I must admit it works great! Finally I can get max details in WoW, now I am setting this for some streaming maybe.

One thing I must admit - it is not over yet, I am currently in search how to improve my temperatures (and my gf wants to kill me).

    Once again, thank you!

Worth Upgrading to I7 8700k or go straight towards the I7 9700k

Hey all, I'm looking to upgrade my cpu since I'm planning on upgrading the gpu to a 1080ti in the coming months(or maybe in a perfect world a 2080 or 2070 but enough of my fantasies) just wondering if its worth upgrading from an i5 8400 and if so to what. PC gets most use out of gaming and basic stuff
