    Simple Questions - October 22, 2018

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:18 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

If your computer is using around 40-50% RAM while idle, Windows tips and tricks might be the cause.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:13 PM PDT

Note: Not sure if this is true for any other Windows besides Windows 10, and not sure if this has been fixed already or not (as I haven't enabled it since then).

Quite a few months ago, I found it weird that my laptop was using around 40-50% of my RAM while idle (no application open at all) out of my 8 GB.

After searching for a bit I saw a possible fix that made no sense for me as "why would this work", but indeed it did work. Both to me, and to a friend who also was asking why he was using so much ram. Two others did it and I believe they still saw some "improvement" even if not that great.

The fix was very simple for me: to disable Windows tips and tricks.

To do so, just follow these simple instructions:

    • Press the Window key (usually between CTRL and ALT) or click the start icon.

    • Search for "Notifications" and press "Notifications & actions settings".

    • Disable "Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows" by clicking on it.

    • Restart your computer.

This worked for us at least, and it went from around 40ish% to 20ish% of RAM usage, to which I believe is where it should be at.

I apologize if this can't be posted here and I apologize if this doesn't work anymore, but hopefully (I think?) it does and it helps someone out.

    Cheers.

Possible to build a minecraft PC for the kids for ~$200?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:33 AM PDT

Don't worry about peripherals or the OS, just the PC itself. That's really all they want it for, I was looking at mini-PC's but they seem to be more expensive than they are worth, like you're paying extra for them being small...

Good headphones for music and games?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:02 PM PDT

I've been through so many headphones now, I used old 2012 turtle beaches for the longest time, then I used Audio Technica m50x for about a year until I fatally sat on them and they broke, and now I've been using some headphones by oneodio. I just want some good, quality headphones that are comfortable to wear, and sound really good with music. Generally around $100 is where I'd shoot for.

Planning to upgrade my GTX 770 and need some advice

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 05:44 AM PDT

Before anything else I'll declare that I play at 1080p/60Hz and have zero interest in anything beyond that for the foreseeable future.

    Here is my current build:

i5-4670k (overclocked to 4.0GHz, haven't put the effort to go any further but probably could. I'm still using my trusty 212 Evo)

    2x4GB DDR3 RAM

MSI GTX 770 Lightning (2GB VRAM)

I'll also mention that I have an SSD in there. I think that's about all you need as far as current hardware is concerned, right?

I plan to upgrade the mobo package in 1-2 years or so, but the GPU situation is already in pretty dire need. The plan was to buy into Nvidia's new series, but unfortunately RTX ended up being a bit of a disappointment for those of us who prioritize good value. Money is not an issue in that I don't have a maximum budget, but I don't want to overspend for no reason, either. Keeping in mind my relatively humble target of 1080p/60Hz, would going for a 1080Ti (or perhaps a 2080 if I manage to find a similarly priced one) to futureproof make sense, or would you say that it's better to buy a cheaper card now then upgrade it again in a couple years, alongside the CPU? If it's the latter, which card would you recommend? And as a bonus question, do you think my CPU is actually good enough for the time being, or would it bottleneck the system as soon as I upgrade the GPU? (again, keeping in mind that I play at 60FPS)

I understand that this is might be a little vague, so ask away if you require any more details. I'm just trying to gather some opinions on the subject because I can't arrive to a conclusion by myself. This is a first time that I've had so much trouble deciding which GPU to buy.

tl;dr attempt to futureproof with 1080 Ti/2080 or settle for something cheaper for a couple years?

Attempted my first build - destroyed my CPU!

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:56 PM PDT

Writing this down as a cautionary tale for any first timers out there (and so I can say I turned this experience into a positive one).

I've been collecting parts for my first build over the last few months, doing it in such a way that I could spread the cost whilst learning as much as I could from YouTube and articles over a decent period of time. I got the final part I needed earlier this evening and, feeling pretty confident and excited, I went for it!

I carefully inserted the CPU (Ryzen 3) into the motherboard, and clamped it down with the little lever. No problems so far. I attached the stock cooler that came with the CPU, screwed it on nice and tightly. Again, no problems!

I then went to install my RAM, when I realised the cooler's power cable was obstructing two of the RAM slots... I could push it out of the way, but it felt like I was forcing it a lot more than should be necessary. Being none the wiser, I assumed this would be a simple problem to fix, so I unscrewed the cooler. Weirdly, it didn't just lift off as I assumed it would, I'd unscrewed it all the way, and it was kinda wiggling, but not coming free.

I stupidly, stupidly, assumed it was also attached by clips that needed a little bit of force, so that's what I applied.

The cooler came free! All I needed to do was turn the cooler the other way so that the power cable wasn't obstructing anything crucial.

But my CPU was no longer attached to the motherboard... it was, of course, still attached to the cooler by what I now know is quite powerfully adhesive thermal gel.

I'd wrenched the CPU out of its socket, and the clamp was still down, so of course, some pins had bent in the process. I tried valiantly to straighten the pins for about half an hour, but I'm just not delicate enough (clearly) to repair the damage and eventually had to accept that it was irreperable.

    Whoops!

Games consistently crashing on 1070 Ti

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:48 PM PDT

So I build a new pc lately and I didn't have many problems at first, but as of late I've had games crashing and causing my screens to go black and sometimes a "no signal" display. Usually results in me restarting my pc completely. I've had the happen to me on Rust, which is a somewhat poorly optimized game, so I didn't make much of it. But Recently It would crash Minecraft in the middle of playing. I'm not a huge computer wiz, but I know for sure Minecraft shouldn't crash on a 1070 Ti. I tried re-seating my graphics card and ram, tried re-installing drivers, and neither solved the problem. I'm really frustrated with this as I spent over $2000 making this PC and I can't even run Minecraft without it crashing. Any advice is much appreciated.

Why are AMD CPUs much cheaper, but thier GPUs are pretty much the same price as Nvidias?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 10:49 AM PDT

Finally built my PC but having a problem that is inducing rage..

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:08 PM PDT

    :[ must fight the rage..

OK. So all in all, building this was easy, the PC functions fine aside from one small detail.

THE GPU! - It is recognized by my PC and it is used in games..

So what is the problem? The fact that I can't break 20 FPS on userbenchmarks or 15 FPS on sea of thieves, even on the lowest settings.

I have updated all drivers, used DDU to remove and reinstall them all over again on my GPU specifically.

Updated my bios too, ran cc cleaner amongst a plethora of other shit!

Frustration is real, figured I'd ask for help here and hope somebody knows their shit. Or enough to save me from this!

Anyway, closing all tabs aside from this, running benchmark and copy and pasting results so you can see my pc specs.

    UserBenchmarks: Game 16%, Desk 62%, Work 42%

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 - 73.5%

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB - 6.4%

    SSD: Kingston A400 240GB - 31.4%

HDD: Microsoft Storage Space Device 997GB - 112.5%

    USB: SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16GB - 7.2%

    RAM: Unknown 3000 C16 Series 2x8GB - 77%

    MBD: Asrock B450 Pro4

    __

That GPU is running at 6.4, what in the actual F? How can I push my GPU to work harder, is this why I'm getting pathetic frames on the benchmark and most games?

Really appreciate any help here, you are probably saving me some hair follicles. Thanks *steps away from PC*

Will a 850W PSU be enough for my new i9-9900K & 2080ti build?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 03:01 PM PDT

I am planning out my new build, and all of the calculators online seem to recommend a 850W power supply, but I'm wanting to double check and get your guys input. I dont want to spend the extra money for a 1000w if not needed. Here is what I am looking at:

Maximus hero xi motherboard I9-9900K (mild overclock) RTX 2080 ti (mild overclock) 32 DDR4 RAM Air cooled system - 3x120mm fans - 5x140mm fans 2xSSDs (op & game drive) 1xHDD (mass storage) 1xUSB 3.0 PCIe expansion card

    PC boots, but no display...

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:41 PM PDT

    i5 3570k (I think)

Radeon R9 390 (new component: probably the culprit)

Aerocool 80 Plus Bronze 750w (also new)

    8gb ddr3 RAM (Zeppelin brand, I think)

    ASRock H61M-DGS mobo

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Recently upgraded GPU, and the PSU to match. It was working fine, had some performance issues in a couple games but the stutter in GTAV magically resolved itself and the card was even able to put out 4k, which I wasn't expecting.

Earlier, while trying to find a fix for bad FPS in Ghost Recon Wildlands, I left it idling in a menu while I wasn't paying attention (ten mins max), when I went back to it the screen had gone all glitchy like a corrupted jpeg or some shit. I smashed that mf power button but when I reloaded it left me with a black screen.

The PC does boot. I can hear the Windows logo through my headphones, the fans are working, the power light comes on, all that good stuff, but the monitor doesn't even recognise that something is plugged into it. The HDMI cable and monitor were both working this morning and I have never had any problems with either of them.

I have reseated the GPU, RAM, reset CMOS battery, I even tried that trick where you hold the power button for 30-60 seconds while the PC is unplugged. Still the same.

Not sure what else to try. Hopefully the good people of r/buildapc can bestow some words of wisdom upon my ignorant ass. My friend swears by this community, let's not let him down eh?

    Thanks all! Love you x

Rx Vega 56 very loud coil while and micro stuttering

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 11:06 AM PDT

So after getting a Sapphire Vega 56 reference, I slapped an Alphacool Eisewolf vega to the card to cool it better. However, the amount of coil whine is loud to the point that it is almost unbearable under load. No whine sounds or any sound at all when the card is idling. The card as of now is just under the balanced preset in Wattman, and when I increase the clocks for memory and core, the coil whine is even louder. Undervolting did not seem to affect the whine or stuttering. Also, there is micro stuttering where the coil whine stops exactly when the stutter happens, then it continues whine. Could this be the card and it not getting enough voltage? Or, the power supply delivering dirty power? Should I get a better power supply with more ripple suppression to see if it helps?

If there is anything else that I could provide information to, please let me know.

    Thank you guys in advance!

    Specs:

    Intel i7-6700k @ 4.7GHz

    Asus Maximus Hero VIII motherboard

    Sapphire Vega 56 ref

    EVGA 750W GQ

    8600k or 8700k with a D15?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 11:20 AM PDT

Hello all, I just purchased a Noctua D15 so I plan to overclock whatever CPU I get. I'm having trouble finding a decent comparison between the two at 5ghz. When both are overclocked, is there much of a difference between them? i5 at $250 vs $330 (on sale) for the i7 is a decent amount for me as a college student.

The only difference I can find between the two is on CPU bound games like BF1, and I plan on buying BFV so that's important to me. However, that comparison is on stock clocks for both so it's not representative of what I'm looking for.

    Thanks!

Pixelated blues on 75Hz IPS display

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:53 PM PDT

I recently bought the LG 24MK430H monitor. You can set it to have a 60Hz refresh rate or a 75 Hz refresh rate. The monitor also has freesync. When I set my refresh rate to 75Hz I noticed that blues appeared pixelated. But the issue is gone when I change the refresh rate back to 60. I found out that others who own similar 75Hz IPS panels have the same issue. For e.g the LG 23MP68 and Acer Nitro VG240Y.

Has anyone here experienced this issue and has anybody found a way to fix the issue with 75Hz?

    Build Help Needed.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:31 PM PDT

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dXG7ZR I have picked out the majority of the parts i will need to assemble my new setup. Within the build no Cpu cooler is listed and that is due to the fact i am going to put in a Ekwb custom water loop with both a 420 and 360 rad. I also added 7 fans on to the build which i will use for the rads ( i believe that is what i must do ) i would also like to use the phanteks halo fan frames on those fans. My question is .... will the power supply i selected be sufficient for overclocking the system : Will i experience and conflicting issues with any of the parts : Will cooling be enough for the i9 ?

I am still trying to choose between the phanteks Evlov x case and the cooler master c700m. The c700m would allow me to have 2 420 rads instead of one and a 360 with the Evolv.

Any suggestions welcome for improving the build i am aiming for high end.

A good chair for sitting long hours

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:47 PM PDT

I usually tend to sit for around 4+ hours and I've heard that gaming chairs are overrated so I'd like an honest opinion and personal experience. Dont get me wrong I'm open to gaming chairs but if the price is insane then count me out, max budget is 150 but lenient to 200. Oh and I'd like it kind of small since my space is semi limited and I'm a small person either way.

Ryzen 7 2700x with vega 64 and a FreeSync Monitor or i7-8700K with RTX 2080 without G Sync Monitor

Build Help: $2000 Budget to Replace Wife's Gaming PC

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 02:01 PM PDT

Build Help/Ready: What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This is a new gaming PC for my wife. She plays a lot of Overwatch and some WoW currently. I am upgrading from a ~5 year old build (3700k and GTX 960). I'd like to be able to get her into max/high end frame rate and performance on this PC so that this build is suitable for similar games for the next 3-4 years. When not being used for gaming, she watches some Twitch, Netlfix, etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, frame rate, game settings)

Max or very high settings for Overwatch today with some buffer room for similar games in the future.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$2000 all-in. I plan to buy a Dell monitor separately as I have some gift cards I can use. I'd welcome recommendations on 24 inch monitors (or slightly bigger/smaller) as well.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

    Other

I'll admit that I don't really know what I'm doing. Beyond looking at other builds, pcpart picker, and logical increments, I feel like I am just guessing.

Help finding a good Wi-Fi / Bluetooth card

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 04:09 PM PDT

As the title says, I am having a hard time fining a good Wi-Fi/Bluetooth expansion card. It seems I have to sacrifice Wi-Fi speed for Bluetooth capabilities and i was wondering if anyone knows of a good one that has built in antenna instead of one i have to mount to something. I am moving my PC around more than i should and am trying to avoid wires as much as possible.
