8700K temps suddenly way too high after installing RTX 2080Ti. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:33 PM PDT Last night while playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, I noticed that my cpu temps had climbed up to 97C. Even under a full load, this is the highest I've ever seen my computer get. So I exited the game and waited for a while to see what the idle temps would be. It stopped at 52C. I've never seen idle over 40 on my cpu before. I decided to reseat the cooler, a Noctua NH-D15S. After doing this the idle temps were 32, which is about normal. I fired up AC:O again and watched as the temps settled around 70, and then slowly climbed over a period of 30 minutes to a max of 93. I started monitoring the temps because the game was crashing after about an hour of playtime. It seems that this problem has only come up after I installed a RTX 2080Ti, but I really don't know how that would change anything. Any ideas? Don't neglect used prebuilts at the low end. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:31 AM PDT Every now and then you will find evangelists of used hardware on buildaPC. This is the sibling to that argument. On the medium to high end, I think you can make the case that brand new parts are better because you know you have a good warranty, you can be pretty sure the parts will last a while, and so on. But at the low end, you can get such a better PC going used. There are a glut of used business desktops in the $50-$200 range. Some of them even come with a legal copy of Windows. The beefier Dell computers can, according to Internet folklore, have their PSUs replaced to support higher-draw builds. (I.e., a GPU above a 1050 or maybe a 1050 Ti). I didn't even consider these options when I built my first PC. The low-power (in terms of electricity draw) GPU market was also much less impressive than it is now. The 1050 and the 750 Ti are quite viable on low-power PSUs. Building a PC from scratch is fun, but how much is that fun worth? The build below should be competitive with everything in Logical Increments until the Vega 11 GPU is introduced at the $383 tier. Let's look at the lowest logical increments build. A dual-core Intel, intel graphics 610, 4 GB of RAM. Cool. On eBay there are all kinds of desktops for under $100. This Optiplex 7010 has 8 GB of RAM and a quad core CPU. The CPU looks like it handily beats the dual-core in multithreaded tasks, and has a bit of an edge in single threading as well. Even if the new Intel is a better CPU (unlikely), you can get a much better GPU for the money you save. A used 1050 is in your budget.
You have $28 leftover to meet the lowest tier of logical increments. Eventually you will hit a wall with the motherboard only supporting an old generation of Intel, but by the time that's a concern, you will have gotten years of use out of the build. My 2018 Extreme PC Build Timelapse Video - Thought you might enjoy :) Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:31 PM PDT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwQkU2j_umo It took a lot of planning, 11 months of buying components, and around 24 hours of build time over several weekends, but I can finally share my build video with you fine folks. I hope you enjoy :). I'm no editor - so apologies for the video quality. It's around 3-4 hours of video squeezed into a 7 minute video. Next one will show it off with some nice close ups, and light demos etc. [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Oct 2018 02:53 PM PDT I'm a teacher who moved to Istanbul last year and got myself a desktop for the occasional gaming. Sometimes the power goes out for a couple minutes after midnight while I'm using it and I am worried one of these blackouts might harm my computer. So I want to get myself a UPS. First of all, would that indeed help in this case? Or would I expose myself to greater risks by getting a UPS? Some people say those things are prone to exploding or severely malfunctioning and doing more harm than good. And if it is helpful, I don't know what to keep in mind while picking one. The computer is: MSI Infinite VR7RC-060XTR Intel Core i7 7700 GTX 1060 8GB DDR4 2TB Hdd + 128 Ssd The webpage where I got the computer says it has 350W power supply (it's a turkish online shop), but I couldn't find any confirmation on MSI's own website. So what do you guys think I should do? Buy a UPS or not? And if so, what should the specs of the UPS be? I only need it to give me some time to turn off the computer smoothly when these blackouts happen. [link] [comments]
Converting a US military 25mm ammunition case to a PC case. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 12:06 PM PDT I'm finally taking the plunge and building my own computer. However, the only experience I have is with cases that take all the hard work out of the process. I'm attempting an ATX-size build here, but I'm having a little trouble with figuring out all the peripheral cabling, sizing, and general organization inside the box. Is there anyone out there who's built something similar that can tell me some issues I'll run into so I don't ruin my first custom build? So far all I've seen are 50mm ammo cans which are much smaller and typically require mini-ATX specs. Case dimensions are 17.25"(L) x 9.75"(W) x 14"(H). Motherboard replacement, or whole pc? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 12:58 PM PDT I currently have an intel 4790K chip CPU and built this computer about 3 to 4 years ago. The motherboard has had the sata connectors go bad on 2 of the 4 available sata ports. I'd like to replace the motherboard, but finding an LGA 1150 motherboard this late in that products cycle is unlikely or expensive. Im wondering whether it would be advisable to just build a whole new PC at this point? I can reuse my Gtx 970 for now, but nothing else really.... maybe the case, so the expense is significant. That said though, the lga 1150 motherboards I've found are either used or very expensive. I might also need to redo my windows as it's probably tied to the motherboard... so an extra expense and headache there. [link] [comments]

Building a PC for Canadian audio engineer Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:19 PM PDT https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/dodgydogman/saved/HtgCbv Looking for opinions on this build for someone who primarily does audio editing professionally, along with some casual photoshop. I've seen a lot of people suggest the included wraith stealth cpu cooler included with the 2600 is good enough not to need an upgrade. They also only want two monitors so I think a gt 1030 will be more than enough for someone not looking to play games. Mainly wanting to know if there will be any issues with the compatibility of the parts, I've heard you sometimes have to update the bios before installing ryzen 2's. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:05 PM PDT I used an XMP profile last year and I think it hecked my RAM up when I put it to 3200. I'm currently using 3200 rated RAM, but at 2133. Specs: F4-3200C16D-16GVGB - RAM 6700k MSI Z270M Mortar I wanted to try manually OCing my RAM, and I was wondering how I'd do it. That or is there a way to just enable XMP and tweak some settings it may change back? [link] [comments]
Workload between CPU and GPU while gaming Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:58 PM PDT If the game maxes out the CPU (99%) but GPU runs let's say 50%, does that mean The same game will not run on older CPU and the same GPU combo? Or the GPU will take some load from that older cpu in order to run the game and work at 60% compared to 50% with newer cpu? How the workload gets shared between cpu and gpu? Its kinda strange seing cpu working at the max and the game not crashing.. What keeps it from not crashing if the game doesent lag, and CPU is at max, and in the game you're going through that amazing scenery, jumping, flying, from time to time you get a waves of other player interactions (which should outmax alreaddy maxed out CPU withouth additional players involved)? Upgrading video card in 6 year old build Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:35 PM PDT I'm weighing my options of doing a brand new build versus upgrading my current PC of 6+ years. Below is my current build, but with the video card upgrade included (based on my guess of the best option). I'm currently using a Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 2GB Video Card with dual 1080p 144hz monitors, and it seems a 1070Ti would be the best route for me to take? I play PUBG, Overwatch, and want to try Black Ops 4 which is what sparked my interest in upgrading. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
My questions are: Will I be bottlenecked by my other components? If so, what is the best video card I could upgrade to? Will this video card fit, and will it make my PC run hotter? Is my PSU sufficient? [link] [comments]

asus rog strix b350 motherboard help Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:31 PM PDT My pc randomly shut off and now the little light on the lower right flashes with 3 seconds inbetween each flash. ive tested the powersupply cand it still turns on, is it the mobo that died? How many pligs should be connected to my power supply? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:24 PM PDT My power supply (evga supernova 650 watt G2 80plus Gold rated) came with a lot of plugs and apparently some of them are only used for over clocking or older computer parts. Plugged into my power supply so far, I have the huge motherboard (MB) plug, which has split ends plugged into the power supply and one end plugged into the Mobo, and the CPU cable, which has one end plugged into the power supply and split ends plugged into the Mobo. I'm aware I need to plug in the wall outlet cord eventually (saving that for when the PC is finished). My remaining unplugged cords are: two cables labelled "VGA", two cables labelled "SATA", another CPU cable that I didn't need, a cable labelled "PERIFF", and three unlabelled cables, one of them is very short. Are any of these necessary? I do not plan on overclocking. I have a DVD drive that I plan on installing, and obviously a hard drive though I am unsure if either need a power supply. My graphics card does not need a power supply. Edit: The instruction manual says to connect a EPS12V cable but I'm not sure which one that is, and from my research it seems to be an outdated and unneeded cable? I'm using am aero itx GeForce gtx 1050ti. The manual also says to connect SATA power cables to all hard drives/SSD and DVD drives, so I'll try that once I connect my drives. It also says to connect a peripheral "molex" 4pin connector for fans pumps and legacy components and other devices and adaptors but I'm not sure if I need it and what cord that is [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Oct 2018 10:20 AM PDT I am about to put together a build and want to figure out whether to go to the next gen for only marginally more, or keep with the current gen, I play primarily on 1440p, but may be inclined to get into 4k soon. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:13 PM PDT Edit - This is for a dedicated gaming and emulation rig, and likely won't be used for any other purpose. I'm wondering if the 8600k would also be a viable option with it's 6 cores, but am wondering if that would be a viable upgraded over my OC'd 4690k. Current build:
I'd like to upgrade this to an i7 8700k. I know this needs a full rebuild, but I'm not fully in the loop on the motherboards for the 8700k, and it's my understanding the chip runs warm. Would that T4 cooler and the Corsair case still work with this or would it run too hot? I'm considering a Micro-ATX build with a Thermaltake Core v21 case, as I previously had a very cool running mini-ITX build in a core v1, but I'm wondering if it's better to keep my current case and go with a full ATX board to spread the heat out more. But I get the feeling my 100r isn't going to be optimal for this, no matter how I build it. Any advice on a good Z series mobo that won't break the bank? And tips on the cooler and case for this? I'll be keeping the GTX 1070 TI, but it's otherwise a full rebuild and I'm not even sure where to start. I'm wondering at this point if I'll need to settle on an 8600k given thermal concerns because I don't have space for a big "PC furniture" kind of case. Edit 2 - I found the Gigabyte Z370M DS3H for $99, is this a good board for the 8700k or 8600k? [link] [comments]

Build help after 18 hours and many problems [Long] Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:13 PM PDT I am on the verge of tears and could really use this sub's help at the moment. Initial build has been working fine for many years, the specs are as follows: AMD FX-6300 Black Edition EVGA GTX 750ti OC Asus M5A78L-M Plus/ USB3 1TB WD Blue 8gb HyperX DDR3 @1600mhz EVGA 500w 80+ bronze Then recently, I added another 8gb of ram, same brand but are native 1866mhz that clocked down just fine to 1600. I also recently swapped the 750ti for a 1080, which was pushing the PSU but was still functioning without any problems. Yesterday, I swapped the CPU, mobo, ram, and PSU for the following: Ryzen 2600x Asus prime x470-pro 16gb HyperX DDR4 @ 2400mhz Corsair CX750M modular PSU (Note: PSU and RAM were bought off a computer someone was parting out in r/hardwareswap, CPU and mobo were bought at MicroCenter) It started but was not booting or posting, the lights on the mobo and gpu come on but my monitor receives no signal. CPU fan does turn on however, so I think the PSU is fine? (I don't know if this is actually an indication or not) I then noticed that the power button turns on my computer but does not seem to be able to turn it off (strange), so I have been forced to use the I/O switch on the back of the PSU. At this point I'm pretty sure I had a one or two front panel connections flipped, which I only discovered until later on. I tried reseating ram, no dice. Tried either stick in A2 slot, still nothing. 2600x requires an external GPU so I can't plug directly into the mobo because that will give no signal either way. I also know it's not a monitor problem because even if I wait several minutes which would be the average boot time, my caps lock light does not turn on when I press it, which means it definitely isn't booting or posting. However, power is at least still being sent to rear I/O on the mobo which is evident when I plug in my keyboard and a light flashes under one of the keys (always has happened before). But wait, there's more. I tried to isolate the problem. I kept the CX750M and reverted back to my old mobo, processor, and ram, and again it was not booting or posting. No signal to the monitor. Reseated all the ram, tried only one stick, two sticks, no sticks. No dice. Since the FX6300 doesn't require an external GPU I plugged my HDMI directly into the rear HDMI on the mobo, and the issue still persists. At this point I'm guessing it's a PSU problem since it was the only component that I had kept from my new set of parts and everything else had been working perfectly. Nope. It was late and I just wanted a working computer again so I swapped the PSU for my previous EVGA 500 watt. At which point my computer, once again, didn't post. Then suddenly, after several attempts, my computer refused to even start. It would turn on for maybe half a second before turning off by itself. More problems? Perfect. So then I swapped PSUs once again to the 750 watt, and that problem disappeared. So what just happened? Did my old PSU just decide to die? Very confused. (Note: I did try later down the road testing the old PSU one again and the same problem came back) I then took everything out of my case and have breadboarded both mobos with their respective CPU and one stick of RAM, shorting the power pins with a screwdriver to turn them on. Still no post, and no signal being sent to the monitor. IIRC neither mobo has a speaker so removing the HDD or all RAM sticks wouldn't give off any beeps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as my form of troubleshooting has devolved to depressed, intermittent glances at my mess of a desk. Thanks [link] [comments] |
