Looking for a Laptop, Round 2: Now with options to consider!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 04:33 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

First, a big thank you for giving me insight on what to get! I've come across a few ones I like and wanted to see what people's overall advice was.

    1. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 There's a store near me (linked to its website) that offers new and refurbished products that has really good reviews. They also offer a two year warranty. For a price of roughly $850 after discounts, I could get a Thinkpad X1, which seems like an amazing deal. It looks light, powerful, and includes a detachable keyboard.

    2. Dell Latitude 5290 This is offered through Dell's outlet for work. It seems like a good build and offers many features. With a warranty, it really stretches my budget, but I haven't looked into whether or not I can get a student discount on outlet for work.

    3. Flex 6 14 This is one is probably the most budget friendly option to get a new computer. I could snag it with warranty for about $850 to $900, depending on what options I select.

    4. Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga L380 I would get the one with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, which would be roughly $800 after the student discount, but without the cost of the warranty.

My needs are fairly simple: 1. Google suite and MS Suite 2. Skype for conference calling 3. Internet Surfing 4. Some art projects (windows INK would be great, but I like sketchable too).

My original budget was $600-$800 for the computer. I don't think I'd want to go over $1,000 all together and I'm interested in refurbs if the company has a good reputation for doing them well.

    Any thoughts on these computers?

    Dell XPS 13 9370

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:20 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a new laptop since I've had my current one since I started college and want to upgrade before I dive into grad school. I do alot of school related work as well as my fair share of games on Steam. I'm buying from the US. The XPS 13 looks like what I'm looking for but I'm horrible with computer specs, so am I right in thinking this one is good?

Thanks in advance for the help.

US-- under $1000 laptop recommendation please!

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:12 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: I would like to stay under $1000. I'm in the US!

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I need a 2 in 1, and I would like good battery life-- I'm currently working with a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 that I've had for four years that stutters and lags and needs to be plugged in or it will die after like 20 minutes. I really think any new laptop is going to be a vast improvement, but to sum it up I need it to be a 2 in 1.

How important is weight and thinness to you? My current laptop is extremely heavy which doesn't work for me. I need something as light and thin as possible so I can take it with me to work every day and on public transit and stuff like that.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please, though I would be open to considering Chrome.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'd like to stay in the 13.3" range.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do a small amount of digital art and therefore would want Photoshop and a lot of the other Adobe Suite products-- InDesign and Photoshop mainly. I do light gaming (see next answer).

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I really don't have any settings/FPS preferences, but I mostly just play 2D platformers/RPGs. A computer that can run Stardew Valley, Spelunky, and Crypt of the Necrodancer would be preferred as those are my main jams.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want something that's reliable-- I'm really not very good at computers and like to keep my tech as brainless and smooth as possible. I recently broke up with my boyfriend who worked for GeekSquad, so I don't really have anyone who can mess with/fix a computer for free anymore as I did previously. Something pretty foolproof would be good. Additionally, I work in politics, and something with a decent amount of security would be good. A finger print reader would be a nice addition. Bluetooth compatibility, something I can charge my iPhone with, and something that will work with Adobe and Google Suite really quickly and smoothly would be great.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I realize this is sort of a ridiculous request, but I want something for which a decent amount of cute accessories are available. I don't want to buy a Mac, but I would like similar accessories (cute hard shell cases or skins, something thin enough to fit into sleeves that are designed for thin laptops, something I can stick a keyboard cover on or get a cute stylus/mouse for to like spruce it up a little). I would also like something gold/rose gold/pale silver rather than like black or grey. None of those are absolute requirements, just would be nice perks.

Thanks everyone! So glad I found this subreddit.

Need laptop suggestions for a stupid guy.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:18 PM PDT

Hi, I am a complete clutz, and after having dropped my 400$ asus laptop 2 or 3 times over the past 3 years the hard drive has broken. It had a load of issues with it when I first bought it, so I was already familiar with the Bios and the inside hardware and I know anything I do will likely not fix it. The motherboard cannot detect the hard drive.

I used it for school, as my college is an hour from where I live and I need to be able to bring stuff around with me.

It luckily booted up one time and I managed to get all my files off before it blue screen for the last time.

Anyways, I am looking to buy a DURABLE(if such a thing exists) laptop for a relatively cheap price (lets say 400-550$). Does anyone have an suggestions for a goofball such as myself. I am not desperate to play videogames on it, but hope it is powerful enough it wont have trouble playing HD videos and games such as CSGO and Dota 2. Nothing graphically challenging beyond those two games though. I dont know if I'd like to buy ASUS again, and I hear HP is an absolute no go. Apple also is not an option, as it is out of my budget and a riskier purchase.

    Can anyone please help me?

Looking to upgrade soon - would love your input

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:51 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

Australia - around 1k is ideal, could stretch a little though. Happy to go used if needed.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Just a normal lappy please haha, no 2 in 1s. Good battery life is very important, and good specs for the money is very important too.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat. Will be carting the thing around a bit, so if it's light and portable that's a big plus.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I've been using 15.6" for years now, so pretty used to that. It's ideal, but if a 13" has what I'm after then so be it.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, a lot of work on Ableton and other audio software. Dabble a little in Photoshop and Illustrator but Ableton is the main bit of software I like to run. I've also started gaming on PC too, so that'll happen more so now.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I enjoy PES/FIFA, and AC. 60FPS would be lovely, but games aren't the main reason I buy stuff.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable, good keyboard and touchpad, would love lots of RAM as is affordable/possible and lots of storage space too, three USB ports, in a perfect world an optical disc drive too. Prefer no touchscreens.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Looking for an upgrade from EliteBook 2740p

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:30 PM PDT

I recently acquired an old 2740p from my school that was on it's way to the dump. It's a little rough around the edges but I've absolutely fallen in love with the little thing (after sticking an ssd and some low latency ram in). This was clearly designed with no expense spared and I'm now looking into something similar so that I can replace this and another laptop I use daily with one.

    Must haves:

    -Rotating/flip around touch screen (a la 2-in-1)

    -Fastest possible CPU

    -GTX, quadro, or vega

    -Upgradeable ram

    Would be nice:

    -Toughbook/Rugged

-Quirky optional accessories (like the expansion battery sold for these)

    -Digitizer touch

    -Front or backlit keys

    No budget limit

Also, some fun trivia about this decade old flagship laptop

-Uses a digitizer touch screen, so pressure sensitive and waterproof. Think wacom drawing tablets.

-Has a small light up touch bar for changing/muting volume (wya apple?)

-Has a small flip up flash light for front lit keys

    -Flip out WWAN booster

    -One trackpad, 4 mouse buttons

    -Firewire

    Secondary Laptop for University Student

Laptop for creative work. Must look good. Budget is ~1.6kUSD but less is better.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:06 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Honestly, as long as its value, will last me for a few years, and hits my requirements, 1.6k USD.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a 2 in one factor because I will be using this device for creative work. Great battery life is what I kind of expect at that price point. I assume that the specifications wont be the best for its price point, but as my number one request is that the laptop has great build quality and looks great. A graphic designer shouldnt have an ugly device.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness is often related to good design, so whatever looks good should suffice.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows ideally. Macbooks dont have that good of value ratio even though its the creative workers choice OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I prefer 13in, but most of the good specs are put into 15 inch devices. 13 inches is more portable and the keyboard looks better because its more edge to edge.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. All of the programs in the creative suite more or less. Might play a few games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As long as its playable.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? GOOD BUILD AND DESIGN. Touch screen ideally unless price is really good.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. DESIGN IS #1. PERFORMANCE IS #2. EVERYTHING ELSE IS #3. I have a Samsung Chromebook Plus and enjoy the screen and the pen thats built in, it just cant run the programs I need. I like the Surface Book 2 15in i7 for its performance, features, and design but not the price. I love the Matebook X Pro's design but not the price/value ratio for the i7 (Nvidia chip not the best) and the touchscreen doesnt bend back so how do you use it for creative work. I like the 3:2 aspect ratio screen.

Best case is i7 8th gen, 16gb ram, 4k touch display 3:2 aspect ratio with good design. Yeah, its the expensive Surfacebook.

I can find pretty good deals on eBay for the Surface Book 2, question is do I settle for the 13in 8gb for 1,000 dollars or the 15in 16gb Original Surfacebook. I can settle for less, but if I use it all the time for a few years, why cheapen out a few hundred bucks. Honestly if someone finds me a great deal that I buy I will venmo or Paypal them 10 dollars.

Seeking refurb laptop to run/learn Linux and general use (USA, $300-$500USD budget)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:57 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA. I would really like to stay closer to 300$ usd, but would go up to $500 if it really fits the bill.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life, best specs for money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important. I love the size of my 13 in 2011 macbook pro. I would go bigger if it made sense, but prefer to stay 13 or smaller.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux only
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Looking to develop linux and basic programming skills and use as a general workhorse. Possibly small amounts of video and photo editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? not a gamer.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality would be great. I am not picky about keyboards. Do Not want touch screen or finger print.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Am looking for the best small, 8gb ram, ssd, backlit keys, and good resolution. (Lenovo X series?? a used macbook???) Suggestions for reputable buyers and what to look for would be great. Is my budget reasonable for this? Thanks

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard would be nice, don't want any useless stuff like touchpad screen or those laptos were you can bend the screen all the way. dont need optical drive, dont need fingerprint reader. I'd like a screen with great viewing angles, where the screen doesn't turn another colour when viewed from the side. This is very important.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. good screen quality is very important to me, usb 3.0 port also would be nice, oh and definitely an SSD with decent storage size

    Laptop for Graphic Design & Web Programming | Budget $600 - $997

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:47 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA. Preferably something around $800, but I'm taking some options closer to $1000 into consideration.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but would take Mac into consideration.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around 15 inch or under
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I work as a Graphic Designer and Web developer so I'm gonna use Photoshop and Illustrator on the daily basics. Video and Audio editions is very rare but I do them sometimes. I may run some vagrants and docker virtual machines, Also I keep lots of chrome tabs/extensions open so I feel like need something with 16gbs of ram or at least the possibility of upgrading
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't play games often. But I'd like to try the GTA V
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality. About 80% of the time I use an external screen/mouse/keyboard, but I value a good screen since I use it as a second monitor.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm not a fan of the "gaming" red and black look, I'm looking at the Legion Y530 because I like the slim look. But the Dell G3579-7989BLK-PUS seems like a better value for the money. I rather a SSD over a larger drive. I also feel it would better for me if I buy something with only 8gb and a SSD with no Hard Disk and then upgrade them myself since it seems a lot of cheaper and I'm traveling outside USA where I don't get warranty unless is Mac anyway.

PD: Why not more laptops come in silver or other nice colors?

Help Me Pick a Non-Gaming Laptop for under 1K

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:34 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Was trying to research laptops and realized I dint know half of what they were talking about and thought people here could steer me to a wise purchase. So right now I have a Chromebook that i'm basically just using to surf the web with but I need something with more memory.I'd basically be using it to store and record music/watch movies/netflix but it would also be great if it had some kind of writing program on it too. Also I've noticed a lot of laptops don't have a cd player anymore is that a standard thing now? would it just be easier to buy an external cd drive?

    Essentials for the Laptop:

    - Good Battery

    - Good Speakers/Audio

    - Fair Amount of Memory

    - Under a 1K

I was looking at the Dell XPS 13 9360 and it seemed to have a lot of the features I was looking for but I would like to hear what others have to say about it or if there's a better alternative to it.

    Thanks for your time/advice!

Edit: Budget is 1000 in United States

    Laptop for video production- $2500

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 06:31 PM PDT

My current desktop is a beast, but I am on the go alot now and need a good laptop that I can bring around while filming. I currently own a GL752 with the 970m and it's trash when trying to deal with 4k 60FPS footage that's recorded at high bitrates.

I asked a similar question awhile back and was really recommended the Aero 15 with its 1070 and all. I like that laptop alot, I just worry about the Gigabyte CS. I know some new laptops have come out now (Looking at you Alienware M15) so I was wondering what yall thought. Has anything come out that's changed? I really need a 4k screen and something better than the 1050Ti Max Q that the XPS 15 has. I dont know if I has to be a thin and light. The cheaper the better. I was looking at the G7 15 gaming from Dell but i cant find any video editing benchmarks.

A windows tablet for Visual Novels

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 06:28 PM PDT

Hi! I am looking for a affordable windows tablet, whose main purpose would be to watch youtube or netflix and play some light games, mainly visual novels. Here are some of the things I am looking for

    • A good battery life, at least 10 hours -Under 300$ (canadian) -Can run the primitive ''games'' I want it to run

So, I am asking for suggestions, and also if it is worth it to get something this low end for the use I want it. If windows tablets under 300 are not worth a purchase, I'd love to know.

Everything I've seen so far seems to have mixed reviews, so, thanks for your output!

What's a laptop that would work well for gaming, has a decent battery life and would last a long while, but isn't advertised as a gaming laptop? I'm currently looking at Dell XPS 15 models right now, for example

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 06:42 AM PDT

Context : My parents are fine with buying me a new laptop, especially for college, and they didn't mention a specific budget, but whenever they see one advertised as a gaming laptop such as many MSI laptops and Razer, for example, they say that they'd "prefer that [I] didn't use it for just games". So high performance, good GPU laptops are fine as long as they aren't advertised as gaming-specific, which might be a blessing because of stuff like weight, heat and worse battery life which would be difficult to manage in a college environment. Basically I'd like to know the best option in terms of performance, battery life, and thermal cooling (as good as a laptop's thermal cooling can be, so no i9, probably) for long-lasting components, as well as weight since many gaming laptops are extremely heavy. I don't necessarily need GTX 1080 performance, as many of the games i'll play will be 2017 or earlier. However, I'd like comfort, and some future proofing, so I think GTX 1050(ti), 1060 or 1070 or something similar in performance,

I've looked at Dell XPS 15 models, which have 1050s, and instantly dismissed Razer laptops due to poor thermal cooling. Otherwise, I have no idea.

Could you please help me out? :) Thank you!

    · How important is weight and thinness to you? Extremely important, going from class to labs all day so the thinner and more portable the better.

    · Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15 inch

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. MatLab, Comsol, solid works, C++, BioMed Engineering software.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Most likely will not be gaming.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good tactile keyboard, I type very often. Something with similar travel to the older MacBook keyboards.

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Looking for a sleek laptop with a good build quality that is able to run programs that Mac OS will not run.

    Replacing a 2010 13" MBP

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 05:44 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~ $1300 or so. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is high on the list. Don't really want a 2-in-1. My MBP used to have great battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness isn't as important, but I don't want anything heavy. Love the form factor of my MBP

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Coming from OS X. If I switch, I will dual boot Windows and Linux, with Linux for normal tasks and Windows for anything that can't run well in Wine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13.3"-14". MAYBE 15.6" for spreadsheets, but I think they seem to be a bit heavy and lower on battery life.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Only flash games on the internet.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No desire for touch screen. My MBP has lasted 8 years and would love to get close to that out of a new machine.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I browse the web, watch Youtube, play flash games, work with spreadsheets, read eBooks/PDFs, and occasionally transcode videos to put on an iPad. Obviously, I love my MBP. It's just getting long in the tooth. I put an SSD and doubled the RAM to 8 GB last year. Now the battery is dying quickly. I want to stay with a MBP, but the prices on the new ones, combined with the keyboard woes, are pushing me to switch. If I do switch, I will run Mint for day to day tasks and keep Windows on another partition for those programs that refuse to play nice. I have 256GB of storage now, and that works fine with one OS. Because of the dual-boot situation, I am looking at 512GB of SSD. I am thinking 16GB of RAM, mainly because it seems like everything is soldered to the MB and not many can be upgraded in the future. If that is not the case, I will look at 8GB machines. Costco is selling a 13" HP envy with 4k screen, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD for $999, which really got me thinking about switching. A similar refurb MBP, minus touchscreen and 256GB storage, is $1699 and I cannot justify that.

Please help suggest a laptop for my mother - primarily Facebook/internet games.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:39 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, would prefer closer to the $400-$500 range but up to $600 is fine!
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Would prefer no 2 in 1 form factor, my mother probably wouldn't like it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really a big deal, but thinner would be better. My mom currently has an old clunky Dell and complains about how hard it is to lug around all of the time.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" or bigger
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly web browsing; email, couponing websites, Facebook. Ability to have multiple tabs open at once without immensely slowing down. Needs to be able to handle Google Chrome and Facebook games effectively; her current laptop doesn't load the Facebook games half of the time anymore and when it does, they load insanely slowly and choppy and she can't play them well. (Not really sure what they are, flash games? I don't know - it's all the games you can load on Facebook, things like Farmville, etc.)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Only internet/Facebook-based games as mentioned above.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope, none of those requirements.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. N/A

Good specs, but as portable as possible? (USA, up to USD 1400)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:34 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, USD 1400. Ideally looking to be under USD1000, and plan to buy over the Black Friday weekend.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 strongly preferred. Good battery life obviously preferred. Specifications secondary, but generally looking for i5-8250U, 8GB LPDDR3, 256GB PCIe SSD or better.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Extremely. Looking for the laptop to be as portable as possible.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Home. Would prefer to have the ability to self-install Linux, but not a dealbreaker.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Smaller than 14". I have noticed that 2in1s have massive bottom bezels; I am seeking to minimise this.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No. Computer is primarily for internet surfing, anime watching/subbing (MPC-HC, Aegisub), light coding (any Jetbrains IDE, e.g. Android Studio), and work on-the-run (Office).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Maybe some old Nintendo emulators or visual novels. Not a primary focus.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Lack of touchscreen is a dealbreaker. IPS display preferred (1080p or better, but not at the expense of battery life). Metal construction strongly preferred.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am looking for a computer that is as-portable-as-possible, but I'm willing to compromise on things (as this is laptop purchasing, after all! I have minimal interest in gaming on this.

Preliminary searches have led me to the Dell XPS 13 2in1, the Surface Pro 6, and the Surface Book 2 13.5". For any model recommended, I'll be keeping an eye on all trim-lines and pick up whichever is most sensible in this holiday shopping season, ideally at around the USD 1000 mark.

Laptop for CS, budget: roughly €1000

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:32 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    ~1000€, Germany

(if there is a great one for €1100, that'd be okay, too)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • I'd prefer a 2-in-1 if it has active pen support.
    • I'd require a battery life of atleast 8 hours of working (browsing the web, coding, writing).
    • A good build quality (maybe business devices)
    • The SSD should be atleast 256gb, the RAM 16 (or maybe 8gb if it's exapandable)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It shouldn't be heavier than 2kg.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • VMs, maybe local servers for development, definitely IDEs.
    • I won't need a GPU and I definitely do not want to game.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality would be good - I want to use it for the 6 years at Uni and after that it should still be usable. I take care of my hardware, but I do travel via bicycle and public transport.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I want to work during travel and especially at the Uni. I don't expect to be able to charge the battery at the Uni .I do have a desktop PC at home and I prefer the desktop experience; the Laptop won't have to do more than what I've specified.
I thought about the new Inspiron 14 5482, but there aren't any reviews yet and the Inspiron series seems to have a history with terrible battery life - can anyone confirm that?

The Inspiron devicec generally seem to have super good specs (with discount the configuration of the 14 5482 was about 900€ and had a 512Gb NVMe SSD, Whsikey-Lake i7 and 16Gb RAM)

I tested the Surface Laptop 2 in a local store and pretty much fell in love with it, but the price is pretty high for a decent configuration (1300€).
Obviously I'm eligible for student discounts.

Thank you for your help & time!

    $400-500 laptop in United States

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 03:12 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $400-500, United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and best specifications for money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very much i'd say 3/10

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 1080p or above

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The most hardware-intensive software i'm planning on doing is maybe something like Fortnite or Minecraft but will mostly be used for Office 365 and general use

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not the top priority but having 30fps on lowest settings is fine. 1080p prefered but anything like 720p or 900p is fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An SSD (200-500gb+) would be one of my top priorities as well as 4-8gb of ram. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon so upgradability isn't required however something like being able to add more storage would be nice. A built-in webcam would also be up there as my priorities but it's fine if it doesn't have one. However, the laptop must have at least one usb port and a headphone jack.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. N/A
