Video Editing Laptop for ~$1300. Used suggestions are acceptable.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:40 PM PDT

I have a friend who has a seven year old Macbook that will not cut it when video editing. He has 4 weddings lined up in the near future and wants a machine that can handle Adobe Premiere programs and Blender. He would have some expectations for how a laptop should perform using these programs, but not what to look for to achieve these expectations. I know what to look for, but don't really have any expertise in laptops and the websites aren't very user-friendly. Any ideas on laptops with dedicated graphics and decent amounts of RAM would be great. I suggested building a PC, but he really wants the portability factor. I have the Dell XPS 15 inch 9570 earmarked, but I was wondering if there is better value available.

did i make a mistake in buying a new laptop

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:30 PM PDT

in nov 2014 i bought an alienware 17 laptop. the specs are:-

    • 4th Generation Intel(R) Core(T M) i7-4910MQ processor (Quad C ore, 8MB Cache, Overclocked up to 4.1GHz)

    • 32GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz

    • NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 880M graphics with 8GB total GDDR5

    • win 8.1 pro

it was my birthday recently. i thought about getting a more powerful alienware 17 laptop. i made some inquiries at the company that got me my old alienware 17. they can get me a new alienware 17 and the specs of the new one are:-

    • 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i9-8950HK

    • 32GB, 2x16GB, DDR4-2666MHz

    • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 OC with 8GB GDDR5X

    • win 10 pro

they gave me a very good price for the new one so i rushed and sold the one that i have and i placed the order for the new one. it will arrive in a few days

i rushed and i didnt do enough research. i just found out there is a new graphics card which is nvidia rtx 2080 and that is more powerful than my gtx 1080

however the rtx 2080 was just released for desktop pc and there is still no laptop that has an rtx 2080 graphics card thus there is still a long time until they make an alienware 17 laptop that has an rtx 2080 graphics card thus me getting a new alienware 17 laptop with a gtx 1080 graphics card is the right thing to do. am i correct?

Replace used laptop drive with new SSD and new Windows 10 install

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 11:15 AM PDT

    Hey there,

So I'm trading my iPad Pro for a laptop with someone on Kijiji. I plan on swapping out the SSD with a brand new one and purchasing a new copy of Windows 10 as a precaution. The system is an Alienware R3 13, so I don't think I need adapters or anything like that for the SSD. I've worked it out as follows:

    1. - Remove old SSD and replace it with the new one
    2. - Purchase new W10 key
    3. - Download W10 install files and put on CD from another computer at home
    4. - Plug external CD drive into new laptop, insert CD and go through Windows setup

I've gone through some bad malware before and want to ensure the new system is clean, so I'm hoping this will do the trick. Am I missing anything? Will the new laptop recognize the external CD drive after I wipe the OS and swap the drives so I can perform the installation? Sorry for the noob questions - just want to make sure I do it right and I'm having some trouble finding steps for my specific situation (new SSD and OS at the same time). Thanks in advance for any help!

What brands usually have good black friday sales?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 04:14 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

One of the posts I saw here recently was talking about lenovo laptops usually going on sale for around 30% on black friday. I will probably need a new laptop for school/travel in early November because I will be giving my current one to a family member.

I'm considering laptops from a bunch of brands, and I want to know where I should focus my attention on black Friday, and whether any deals might be substantial enough to make it worth waiting for.

    Thanks.

    Laptop daisy chain question

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 06:28 AM PDT

I'm planning to buy a laptop. Currently my eyes are on HP Spectre x360. It has usb type-c, HDMI and tb3 ports. My question is if it's possible to use daisy chain with Dell U2414H monitors. If I manage to get some usb-c to DP or HDMI to DP, will that work?

    Protecting your monitors back.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:56 AM PDT

I've bought a laptop it was the Dell Inspiron 15 7567. It's an everyday use for me at uni and at the dorm. So I really use it frequently (Put it into the bag, picking it out..etc).
The monitor back have a rubbery feeling back, and I started to see some "scratches". I have no idea if I can replace it at Dell or something...but any idea for protecting it?

How to upgrade a laptop screen?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:06 AM PDT

I own a Acer Predator 17X GX-792-77BL and I don't like the 4K panel. I was thinking about changing it out for a 1080p panel 144hz that way I can use the same connector which is a 40pin. Does anyone have an experience here who could point me in the right direction?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:46 AM PDT

Came across this model on my local (New Zealand) Dell site as it's on sale. Haven't seen any reviews on it yet as appears to be quite a new release

    https://www.dell.com/en-nz/shop/laptops-ultrabooks-notebooks/new-inspiron-14-5000/spd/inspiron-14-5480-laptop/b511000nz

    Specs

    - 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-8265U

    - 8GB 8Gx1 DDR4, 2666MHz

    - 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive

    - Intel® UHD Graphics 620

    - 42WHr, 3-Cell Battery

Main reservation I have is with the battery, unsure if this will have decent battery life. Anyone had experience with this model?

Changing (downgrade of GPU) Laptop Expectation Enquiry

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:46 PM PDT

I just wonder, if compare XPS13 9360, with i5 8250 and UHD 620 (Still Shipping).

While current laptop is running i7 4710HQ with GeForce 840M.

what GPU performance should I expect?

I did some research and find that CPU wise, I probably not expecting to much of a change. with benchmark shows +9% effective speed, +6% average user bench and +9% Peak Overclocked Bench

    https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-8250U-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4710HQ/m338266vsm11499

I am ok with similar spec CPU since I am changing from a mid-size laptop to an ultrabook,

however, one question I do have is regarding to my GPU performance. In the past, I do not play much games require GPU (that's why I decided to downgrade). The heaviest games I played are either League of Legends, Portal 2 or Left 4 Dead 2. Which all are either fairly old games or low demanding. And I know they will run fine on XPS13 9360 However, I am still curious what should I expect in the future if I were to go into light game, whether I should still try to get it on my old computer when play at home or what.

    Benchmark shows

effective speed will be -27% lower which is fairly expected, however, average user bench only -2% with peak overclocked bench actually 11% faster, I am very confuse when reading it. and how it will impact the overall experience.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:08 PM PDT

So I'm looking for a cooling pad for my Dell XPS 9550,and i was considering the Cooler Master SF-17. I normally play warframe or run Nox player on it for a long time and the chassis tends to get pretty hot. Will a cooling pad make a difference? if so what other pads do you guys recommend? also should i continue to do stuff like this on my laptop will it be bad for it in the long run? its the 4K screen version, had it for about a year and a half.

Sorry for the long post, any help would be appreciated.

Choosing a new gaming laptop (144Hz 1080p display)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:52 PM PDT

Hi guys, currently I'm looking to purchase a gaming laptop. I already have a decent gaming rig at my apartment, but I have to travel back and forth to my hometown so I need something to play on the holidays. I also have to travel for business trip quite a lot, and my company-provided laptop is shit (only 3 excel tabs + 02 IE tabs and it will freeze and stutter like running on a Celeron CPU).

In my country, selections are quite limited, but fortunately shipping from other countries is not as hard as before so I would like to get some recommendation for my purchase.

    1. Total budget and country of purchase:

=> 2,500USD (After tax), Country of purchase doesn't matter but I'm in Vietnam

    1. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

=> Just regular laptop. I don't care about battery life. I want 1080p 144Hz screen (G-Sync is a plus, but NO Optimus).

    1. How important is weight and thinness to you?

=> Light and thin laptops are sweet. Thin bezels are attractive, but not a must. I really prefer light and thin laptop, but I won't say no to big fat ones. (In the past I got a 17" MSI so...)

    1. Which OS do you require? => Windows only.

    1. Do you have a preferred screen size? => I prefer 15.6"

    1. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

=> I'm mainly a gamer, sometimes I do some video editing.

    1. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

=> I'm currently playing Dota 2, Path of Exile, PUBG, Pillar of Eternity, Divinity 2 and some other games.

=> Target setting: All settings at High or Ultra 144fps @1080p

    1. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

=> Build quality is of top priority. I don't want a frying pan disguise as a laptop (quite bad experience with my former HP Pavillion). I plan to keep this laptop for at least 3 years, so I don't mind paying premium for build quality.

=> For input: I'd use my external mechanical keyboard and mouse so default inputing devices don't really matter. But of course I would appreciate good inputs anyway. Touchpad is not important, I don't use touchpad at all, but still a good touchpad is a plus.

    1. Other: I don't know much about Western holidays and/or special occasions so maybe I will miss out some good promotions (such as cyber monday or black friday, etc). If there is any coming, please let me know!

    Thank you very much!

Looking a for a laptop that would work well for emulation up to the likes of RPCS3 or CEMU with no problem.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:32 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

      <= 1300$ US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life is more ideal for me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      No preference

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      n/a

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Emulation is what I want the most especially for CEMU and RPCS3. Being able to run Unity would be cool too, and gaming is okay as long as I can do at least medium settings. Dont need ultra high.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As long as I can run at a solid 60 in any modern game, Ill be happy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I have no real preference with features, I guess a nice keyboard for typing? haha

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Battery life is a huge deal for me as I would be using it in a place I cant charge often. I would get a retropie, but I really want to play games like Persona 5 and Breath of the wild on pc. Thanks everyone!
