Is $950 USD a good price for a thinkpad x1 carbon 6th gen?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:31 PM PDT

First of all, I hope this is the right place to ask such questions.

So tomorrow I'm meeting up with someone off of craigslist to buy the aforementioned laptop. It's a used, but quite pristine 512gb ssd/16gb ram/i7, touchscreen model. Just wanted to know if it was a good price. Thank you!

Looking to buy a new Razer Laptop which one should i choose?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:29 PM PDT

I am between the new Razer Blade 15, and the Razer Blade 17 Pro. If i were to choose the Razer Blade 15, i would probably get the 1070 GTX (HD Version) one or the base model. Else, i would get the Base pro model. I'd use it for gaming and studies (Computer Engeneering) so heavy programing would be involved. Which one do you think is the best? Here are the links to comparison: 17 Pro: https://www.razer.com/comparisons/blade-pro?_ga=2.43082528.4649910.1540228823-390562969.1540009254&fbclid=IwAR2Bxfi85-wdI6Ixb6CMr2cpIeCuv3ISTyn7YFLk9ix4wm9ukRN-l37MGYg

    Laptop Memory Question

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 10:52 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I recently purchased an HP laptop this is solely for online work. However the 4GB of RAM is extremely limiting. I have already done what I can with Windows to lessen usage. But since I do need to use Chrome a lot for work, the laptop feels slow.

Just in case anyone is asking, I was severely limited by budget as laptops are expensive here.

I would like to add another stick to it and based on what I can find its 2400 SDRAM however, I'm not sure if its ECC or if there's a difference between SDRAM and SODIMM. Does anyone have this information? There's also the question of timings as well.

    The laptop:

    http://www8.hp.com/ph/en/products/laptops/product-detail.html?oid=19877053

The RAM that I would like to add:

    https://shopee.ph/Kingston-4GB-2400MHz-DDR4-Non-ECC-CL15-SODIMM-Laptop-Memory-i.14982324.294954593?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6rXeBRD3ARIsAD9ni9A-Xqz5O9G6xVZnETDTLwXwT6aoVIAisk8m1IHoD7JARsVidLeVWRQaAqM8EALw_wcB

Also, does anyone have instructions on how to open it so I can install it myself?

    Thank you everyone!

    Which is a better choice?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 10:34 AM PDT

I've come across two ASUS laptops which seem good to my standards, but there is a confusion. I don't know which one is better for it's value? I need a laptop for coding, using Virtual Machines, Photoshop etc which could last at least 3-4 years of good use (won't be gaming on them since I have a gaming PC)

    Option 1:

    860$

    Asus VivoBook 15 X510UR-BQ240

    Intel Core i7-8550U 1.8 GHz

    8GB DDR4 2666MHZ

    256GB SATA SSD

    NVIDIA GeForce 930MX

    15.6" LED

    Option 2:

    1170$

    Asus VivoBook S510UQ-BQ487

    Intel Core i7-8550U 1.8 GHz

    16GB DDR4 2666MHZ

    512GB SATA SSD

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 940M 2GB

    15.6" LED

Which one is more worth it for the long run given the price? I honestly have no idea about either models so if any of you can help me it'll be greatly appreciated.

PS: My budget is 1000-1200$ if you'd like to recommend another laptop.

13" laptop with discrete graphics for around $2000? (US)

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 10:04 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US. $2000 is a rough target. Could go higher, but don't want to pay more just to pay more.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is important since I'd like to be able to use it without being tethered to an outlet all the time. Specs are important, but 2-in-1 form factor or touchscreen are not important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, since I want it to be very mobile.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer Mac OS, but obviously that limits choice quite a bit. Windows is OK.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. More photo organization than true modeling or editing. Something like iPhoto on Mac. Would also like to be able to game occasionally, like The Sims or WoW.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? WoW or The Sims, nothing too demanding. Would like to run at least 40-60fps at good/great settings. Ability to play on external monitor @ 1080p would be desired, as well.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Love the Macbook touchpads. Keyboard and build quality are important. Touchscreen, fingerprint reader, optical drive are not.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm coming from a 2010 MacBook Pro that has outlived its welcome. I like the simplicity of the ecosystem more than Apple's specs and applications, though, since I also have an iPhone. Most of the time, I'll be using this for Netflix and importing/organizing pics from my phone for personal use. I would also like to do light gaming, but want something that can definitely handle it. I used to have a dedicated gaming PC to complement my MBP, but am trying to get down to one computer that can do it all. I haven't seen a lot of 13" options with discrete graphics. 1TB SSD would be nice, but at least 512GB. 16+GB of RAM. I have a Costco membership and would prefer to purchase from a retailer that easily accepts returns in case I am very disappointed with the product. Thanks!

Need help deciding which laptop to buy

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 09:54 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm looking forward to buy my first laptop in 4 years. I did a bunch of research on the gaming laptops for the past month and narrowed my choices to these three 3 laptops that I am linking. I need help deciding which one I should finalize on. Here's the link: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/compare/Dell_Alienware_17_R5_vs_MSI_GS65_Stealth_Thin_vs_ASUS_Republic_of_Gamers_Strix_vs_ASUS_Zephyrus/BHitems/1401178-REG_1398476-REG_1398351-REG_1398350-REG I don't have much of a preference other than the performance of these laptops.

Dump or revive old ASUS laptop

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 04:58 AM PDT

Got an ASUS x53 I think the model number is. Gets about 90 minutes out of the battery. I tried getting a generic expanded battery, got almost 2.5 hours out of it but it died after a few weeks.

Is it worth going out of my way to get a genuine battery (which I haven't been able to find anywhere so far) or should I look for something new?

It's not my main computer so I'm in no rush to replace it until early next year. It's just I'm seeing all these new laptops with 8+ hours battery life.

Help! How can I make my laptop with a 4k display run on 1080p without blurriness along with correct ui scaling

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 01:42 AM PDT

    Dear Redditers,

I recently purchased the fully maxed out HP Envy 13t with 16 gb of ram, an Nvidia Mx150 gpu, and a 4k monitor. A week ago, I began noticing some lag on this machine on Chrome and on Steam when browsing through the store. At first I bench-marked the CPU to determine if it was still in good condition since I bought it Refurbished. The benchmarks all showed me that my CPU was in good condition. Recently, I changed my display resolution on my laptop to 1080p to fix UI issues on an engineering program for one of my classes. I noticed when I did this all my problems were solved, Windows is running smoother in 1080p. The problem is that in 1080p, everything looks blurry. Apparently 1080p is much worse on a 4k monitor due to upscaling. I'd prefer to run my computer in 1080p since its much smoother and I'd get better battery life. What can I do to remove the blurriness and make my screen look as crisp as it would in a native 1080p monitor? All the windows scaling settings also make my icons way too small or big. What would be an appropriate custom scaling to make my icons the same size as they were in 4k at 300% scaling? I really don't understand why having a 4k monitor would affect my 1080p experience and make everything large and blurry. How can I fix this? Or are there way that I could get better performance despite 4k?

Dell G5 vs. HP Omen, help decide please

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 07:03 AM PDT

So I can buy G5 or Omen with very similar specs for almost exactly the same price since this store in my country has this Omen I'm interested in on 20%off. I Will just put the specs in here so someone can help me and point out some pros and cons. Dell g5 - 15-5587 i7-8750H/16GB/SSD256GB+1TB/GTX1060/15,6FHD HP Omen - i7-7700HQ/16GB/1TB+256GB SSD/15,6FHD/GTX1060 6GB . My biggest concern about Dell G5 is the screen everyone is pooping on, is it really that bad? And with this Omen, I wonder how big the difference is between the i7 in G5(8th gen) and the i7 in Omen(7700), and ofc since its a HP I wonder how problematic is the heating in Omen. G5 seems to have a really good cooling system. Thanks!

    Confused between the two

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:53 AM PDT

I like the ASUS Vivobook 15 and Lenovo Ideapad 520. They both have MX150 which I will need to play Dota on a good setting. My question is, since these laptops are thin, will games like Dota 2 or TF2 heat up the laptop? And is the build quality nice for these models? They don't have a SSD, I know having one is a plus but is it necessary?

    Thank you.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 06:26 AM PDT

Im going to be a student in the Spring of next year and Im looking for a laptop with good battery life, able to play basic games (nothing too much like Overwatch, just steam games and Emulators), isnt bulky, runs well and under 300.

I see a bunch of laptops but dont want to buy anything unnecessarily pricey when I could buy a cheaper one that works for my basic needs.

Can i return a laptop for a faulty fan?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2018 12:20 AM PDT

As a student, I worked all summer to purchase a laptop that would last my 4 years of study. But the first laptop had a faulty screen and the replacement I was provided with has a whining fan that drives me insane, is the fan a good enough reason for a return and replacement? It is still under 30 days of purchase.

    Thanks In advance!

    Inspiron 15 3000 Series (i15-3576-A70C) Review...

    Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:38 PM PDT

    (i7 8 gen, Radeon 520 (2gb), 8gb ram)

My review is focused on the performance in the games, I will not evaluate Other things.

This Laptop surprised me, I did not expect it would run so well the modern games, I did many tests.

    FIFA 18

Run very well, Got a good framerate playing in high quality, no hangs, no lag, run perfectly.

    Fortnite

Fulfilled the expectations, run well in average quality, I tried to play in high quality but keeps crashing, no surprise running this games.

    PES 18

Don´t run very well, I just got a acceptable framerate in low quality, expected more in this game.

    GTA V

Here I surprised myself, managed to run with a good framerate in high quality using the Redux mod! I was amazed at how beautiful the game was.

    Conclusion

I really liked this laptop, I highly recommend it.
