Lenovo laptop throttling cpu at very low temps only while using applications or playing games

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:46 AM PDT

So I play a bunch of games on my Ideapad 720s 15, i7700HQ gtx 1050 ti max q and 16 gb ram, i undervolted and repasted, I get a max of 80 c on gpu and cpu which is great for laptop, one problem tho, it still throttles to around 1800mhz clock speed for cpu, it never ever hit above 2.6 which is the base, my temps are fine but throttle stop has the throttle icon blinking, why is this happening?

Need help buying a new laptop, around 400€-450€, EU

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:25 AM PDT

    Engineering student here.

So far, after 1h of searching i've found those :

    1. Dell Inspiron 3567
    2. Lenovo-v310-15ikb
    3. Acer-aspire-5-a515_51g
    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Max 450€, Europe.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Looking for good specs mostly, but i cannot afford more than 450€ :(.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not so much i would say.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I will install Windows on it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I really do need it mostly for college, i will run CAD, Labview, Matlab etc. on it, also i used to play video games in the past(moba's mostly, like LOL or Dota 2).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Moba's mostly, as said above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    I don't think so...

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking mostly for something i can keep for 2 years let's say, college being the priority, good specs.

Looking further for your advice, thanks in advance!

What Type of laptop should I get?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 10:38 AM PDT

    Howdy,

I have just enrolled onto a photography course and am currently looking to purchase a laptop, preferably W10, that preferably meet the following criteria:

    • Fast and reliable

    • Good for college work - Taking notes, running photoshop & PowerPoint.

    • Decent battery life (Pref 4+ hours)

    • Can play some games, not high-end games of course, but something simple like RS.

    • Relatively cheap - Around £600 tops.

    Thanks in advance.

Looking for best laptop I can get under 3k USD for high res video/photo editing, music production and some gaming.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 09:52 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:*

United States - $2500-$2700 but would go up to 3k for amazing specs

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

2 in 1 not necessary, best specs preferred, battery life not important as laptop is always plugged in and only moved occasionally (however portability is important)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight not important, thinness somewhat important, would like to be able to transport it easily from time to time.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows only

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

    17in strongly preferred

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom/premier/after effects/ableton live/traktor/various modern games

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Highest fps/settings possible, GTX 1080 would be great

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Optical drive not necessary, can use external, good build quality obviously, track pad not important, external mouse is always used, lots of connectivity, USB 3.0/C, thunderbolt etc...

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Spending big bucks on a nice laptop that needs to last a long time. Last upgrade was 8 years ago, probably won't go that long again but I need a powerful system that will stay current for a few years. Don't want to worry about running software or games effectively, I'd rather be overpowered than underpowered.

    Thanks!

    Laptop overheating after being cleaned

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 01:11 PM PDT

Asking for a friend. (For real. He doesn't wanna bother making an account.)

His laptop is an Acer Aspire E15 with:

    CPU: i5-5200U GPU: 940M

The problem is when playing games. About a year ago everything was fine, but recently it has been overheating when playing games. He has cleaned dust out of it, with no luck.

    Thanks!

    Laptop decision

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:06 AM PDT

So I decided not to spend a fortune on a laptop I won't use so often, so here we go, I need to choose between 3.

    1:ASUS VivoBook F510 15.6" Full HD IPS, i3 8130U 256GB SSD, 4GB RAM. 399.00£

    2:Lenovo Ideapad 330S 14" Full HD IPS, i3 8130U, 128GB SSD, 4GB RAM. 379.99£

    3:Lenovo Ideapad 330S 14" Full HD IPS, i3 8130U, 1TB HDD, 16GB Intel Optane, 4GB RAM. 399.99£

Which one should I go for? I am interested which one has the better screen, also if can be upgraded in the future.

    Thanks!

Thoughts on the various HP-15 ranges? Can't decide which is the best value for money.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 10:53 AM PDT

Getting a laptop for university which will be able to run some decent games and I'll be able to program on.

    Considering between:

HP15 with GTX 1050TI that I can get for £889.

HP15 with GTX 1050 that I can get for £779.

The above are 144hz displays, here is my last option that I can come up with:

HP Pavilion 15 with GTX 1050 for £679

If anyone has used any of the above or has any thoughts they'd like to share please do!

    Upgrading SSD

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 10:35 AM PDT

I am looking to upgrade my m.2 256GB SSD to something larger. For context, my OS is on the M.2 and my 2.5 1TB is my storage.

I figured I could get an external m.2 adapter, clone from old M.2 to new M.2 using the external adapter, and just switch out the old M.2 with new M.2; therefore, I should be able to boot and go on my way properly.

Would this method present any issues? Would cloning from a smaller SSD negatively affect the larger SSD? This is my first time trying this method and hope garner some input before I actually try this method out.

Looking for a laptop under 3k for photo/video editing, music production and some gaming from time to time. Potability is also a must. This laptop looks perfect and I'm scared to find out there's some huge problem, but I'd love to hear from anyone who used one.

    Laptop Screens similar to "LP173WF4-SPD1"

Hello everyone, my laptop screen suddenly started malfunctioning.

After searching a lot, I found out that I can replace it with any other laptop screen on condition that it is the same model.

What I mean by model is the position of the logic board, brackets, the connector(30 pin, 40 pin) and so on.

Does anyone happen to know if there are screen manufacturers that have the same model as the one in the picture but from a different manufacturer ?

    Screen name: LP173WF4-SPD1

    Resolution: FHD (1920x1080)

    Surface Type: Matte

    Video Connector: 30 pin socket

    Mountings: Top and Bottom Brackets

    Optical Technology: IPS

Logic Board: Mounted to the back (as in the pic)

The reason behind my inquiry is due to the fact that I am not finding the same model number in my country, thus I need to find a similar screen model but different manufacturer hoping I can find one here.

I have 8 GB DDR4 2400 MHz and one more empty RAM slot. Manufacturer says that motherboard supports up to 16 GB of RAM.

So my question is: the RAM im buying should be 8 GB DDR4 2400 MHz and that's it ?!!? Or there is more stuff i should consider before choosing and buying the new RAM ???

    Huawei Matebook X Pro

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:45 AM PDT

So I'm considering selling my 2017 surface pro for the Huawei. I really like the bigger screen, the bezeless display, the discrete graphics (most of my gaming is on my PS4 pro, but it's nice to have the option for older games and emulators), better lapability, quad speakers, thunderbolt 3, USB-C, and comparable size.

As a student who likes to use their computer to take notes, I will miss the pen support and tablet mode quite a lot though. However, since I'm not an artist or anything, my pen usage is strictly for notes really...

If you own the computer, what are your thoughts on it compared to say the Surface Pro and other Ultrabooks? From what I can tell, it's a very capable laptop for its size, but I'm not sure if it's worth forgoing pen support. I'd consider the Surface Book lineup because of the similar enough specs to the Huawei, but it's so expensive to get the dGPU model and it's a much clunkier device.

Mysterious 100 percent disk usage (Windows 10)

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 11:21 PM PDT

First of all I'd like to ask, what causes high disk usage in the first place? Second, none of the "fixes" I've found on the web help my situation, maybe someone can suggest something that doesn't come up in the first 10 google hits? Most of it seems to be Microsoft processes that are causing the huge spikes. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes to go back to normal, sometimes it doesn't unless I end every process that spikes. I really don't know what to do, because I can't really do anything when disk usage is at 100 percent. It even goes to 100 percent on a clean boot.

Help me find Memory and a replacement Hard drive for my Laptop

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:54 AM PDT

I need to buy an additional 8GB RAM stick and a 2 TB Internal Hard drive for my laptop
I've never replaced or added stuff inside it before so I don't know which parts to look for
    Model : Asus ROG GL552VX
    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-GL552VX-7th-Gen-Intel-Core/specifications/

It has 8GB RAM and I believe customer service told me the hard drive is Hitachi brand at the time I bought it.
Can I just buy any 8GB Laptop stick and HDD and replace them ? or what should I look for ?
