[Update] Beware buying Amplifi by Ubiquity Posted: 21 Oct 2018 06:41 AM PDT I posted a warning to others interested in Amplifi products a few weeks ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/9kikvh/beware_buying_amplifi_by_ubiquity My primary complaint was that if you purchased the "package" of router and mesh units, the mesh units were hard coded to that specific router and were useless if that router failed as mine did. My only recourse was to purchase yet another set of mesh units. I found that to be a shady business practice and a horrible solution. I was in the process of returning the newly purchased replacement router when I fell ill and wasn't able to arrange for its return when I suddenly received an email from their tier 3 support. In the email the tier 3 essentially agreed with my position and offered to send me two new mesh units at no charge. I received them and found the set up to be a piece of cake. Eventually it came to pass that one of the power supplies for the mash unit was defective. They are sending me a replacement power supply now. I wanted to post this update to give my props to the company for their actions. After bagging on them mercilessly in this forum as well as others I wanted to make sure that I cleared the air and gave them credit where credit is due. They took a bad situation and a very pissed-off customer and resolved the situation satisfactorily. Why it took the involvement of a tier 3 support for such a matter is a subject for another thread I'm sure. In short, kudos to amplif for resolving the situation satisfactorily. Made my situation much more tolerable and wanted to give credit where credit is due. [link] [comments] |
I’m being ddossed and I can’t do anything about it Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:32 PM PDT I need my internet as I work from home and I haven't been able to get much done today, my internet is virgin media and I've researched and they don't change IPs on internet reset and stuff. These guys haven't stopped hitting me offline and don't plan to all because I said they were bad at a video game... Does anyone know how I can get my IP changed? Thank you [link] [comments] |
ARRIS SB6183 16x4 DOCIS 3.0 Modem - Amazon Warehouse for $32, Fullfillment by Amazon w/ PRIME FS Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:59 PM PDT Mods can delete this if this is not allowed on this sub-reddit. Or down-vote it if no one cares. Just wanted to alert y'all to a sub-$40 deal on very good condition used (most likely open box or initial shipment cosmetic damage) ARRIS SB 6183 modems. There's like 20+ available for you to look through and purchase. A variety for you to choose from. Read the description. Free Shipping with Prime and fullfilled/shipped from Amazon's warehouses directly. $70 new so this is a fairly good deal at a ~50% discount. The black ones warehouse deal is $49.99+ unfortunately :( It's a much more liked color for sure. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:35 PM PDT I have no idea where to start getting information. I'm already running a Edgerouter-X on location A, location B on the other hand has nothing special. The files are on a PC on the location B network. Is a VPN what I should be looking for? Are ther any good guides? [link] [comments] |
WiFi tethering backwards to existing network Posted: 21 Oct 2018 08:10 PM PDT Hi. I have a home network and i want to be able to access my phone's data plan as a backup internet gateway. Is it possible to do reverse "WiFi tethering" while acting as a WiFi client? I know i can turn on traditional wifi tethering(AP mode) and do a virtual client on a wifi access point, but that's no fun and I want to have the phone on the same subnet without 8 device limit, DHCP conflicts, etc. the phone has root and is on android 8.0.0. any IPTables magic is gladly appreciated. Looking for a new router for 250 Mbps Posted: 21 Oct 2018 04:14 PM PDT Hi All, I recently upgraded to Fioptics for 250 Mbps and noticed that my current Router, Netgear N600 WNDR3400v3, is only capable of 100 Mbps. What router would you recommend to get the 250 Mbps for my wifi? Would the TP-Link AC1750 be a good choice? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:56 PM PDT Hi, everyone. First time poster, confused about what I've read here about MOCA. I am wondering if the idea below is a solution to my problems. I have Spectrum (just internet) coax running into the house from POE box. It is connected to a modem which is connected to a wireless router. Due to my house config, I cannot get strong internet on the other side of the house. I want to strengthen the connection on the other side of the house, which is connected with unused coax branching off the main POE box at a splitter. What I am thinking about doing is: Hooking up MOCA adapter to my modem/router. Putting another MOCA adapter on the other side of the house and attaching a new wireless router to it. Hooking up a MOCA filter thingy on the coax cable running from Spectrum into my house's POE box so that my data is protected. Would this solve my internet ills? [link] [comments] |
Why does my wifi randomly disconnect from all of my devices? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:52 PM PDT I've been having this issue for a while now where my wifi will sometimes randomly disconnect for a good few minutes. I lose the ability to connect to the wifi on all of my devices: my phone, laptop, computer, gaming console, everything. This tends to happen at least once or twice a day, and it's very frustrating, especially when in the middle of playing online games. I'm fairly certain the issue is the router itself (especially b/c this is just one of multiple issues I've been having with my connection), and I'm tempted to go purchase a new one, but I'm curious if there's any settings-changing I can do with this current one to deal with the issue. Also, my provider is Spectrum, and my current router is a Technicolor TC8715D. So, does anyone know how to fix this? What exactly could be causing it? [link] [comments] |
Best router for Spectrum under $100? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:48 PM PDT Hello, I'm trying to upgrade my internet to Spectrum's 100mbps. I heard it's better and cheaper to buy your own router, but I'm not sure which are good and I'm on a budget. It'll be used for gaming among other things (5 ppl in our house). Any recommendations? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Will this MOCA hardware configuration work? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 07:34 PM PDT Will buying two of these Moca wifi extenders and a moca splitter work? The quick start manual seems to suggest you'll also need one of these standalone moca adapters , but they're super expensive compared to wifi extenders for whatever reason. (originally the wifi extenders were twice as expensive when they were still in production) My rough understanding is that the the wifi extender is the same thing as the standalone moca adapter with the addition of the wifi extender and one less coax connector. Could be wrong. Here's how I'm thinking of wiring it up. Not sure if it will work. I don't need the wifi extender capabilities in the first room because I already have the wifi router there. I will want to use the wifi extender in room 2 though. I don't have cable TV. Just internet. I'm using powerline adapter right now, which kind of sucks. I only have a 100mbps internet connection, so I don't want to get the newer more expensive moca 2.0 adapters. EDIT: Do I also need a POE filter? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Oct 2018 06:49 PM PDT The building has sheet metal and mesh on the outer walls so wifi signals dont make it into the building, there is a single ethernet line run underground in conduit to the building though. What is the most affordable option to turn that into a wifi signal for that space? The single ethernet cable has been fine for the space, but now a wifi signal is needed for some medical equipment [link] [comments] |
Packet-loss and timing out after a few rounds of certain games, others are usually fine. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 02:45 PM PDT I recently had very bad problems with my internet after i got a new router where it would give me high packet loss in and time me out while playing almost every game except hearthstone. I enabled DMZ on my router settings for my PC and it fixed it for league of legends 100 percent of the time but that was pretty much the only game it was confirmed for, other games it would play fine for a while but a few games or rounds in it would do the same thing, packet loss in and time out. this would be in fornite, for honor and overwatch. I run a ethernet through power to my router. msg for any extra details or advice you have no matter what. Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Oct 2018 06:17 PM PDT We have a Linksys EA3500 (version 1.1.40.162464), and for the last 3-5 months it's been very tough to connect across several devices. How can I tell if it's time to update this router, which we've had for 5-6 years, or if there's something else that we're doing wrong? Devices we're specifically connected with, total of 12 devices:
I'm pretty naive when it comes to this, so apologies if this is a stupid question. [link] [comments] |
When I ping my IP address, I get %100 packet loss, but I can still access the internet. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 06:09 PM PDT Lately, I've been having problems in games due to lag, so I decided to ping my own IP address (idk why) and I get %100 packet loss, how can I fix this? [link] [comments] |
What's the most advanced router I can buy under $100? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:43 PM PDT Looking to buy a router that really allows me to customize the network. I'm used to enterprise dual-wan routers such as Peplink. Most important thing I want is that it has wifi and also supportings VLANing. (L2TP with ipsec would be a dream but I doubt it.) Posted: 21 Oct 2018 05:18 PM PDT Details: 5500 square foot. 3 levels. New construction. Regular drywall throughout. Network: New construction and will have 100-250 download. New construction, so I have 30 Ethernet run with 6 access points run throughout (1 in basement, 3 on main, 2 upstairs). I will have 6 cameras running via PoE. Needs: I like things to run smoothly. No hiccups. I'm into home automation and download a lot of movies/stream a lot. But nothing crazy Questions: Of the ubiquiti access points, which one should I get? For my network closet, what switch should I get for these needs? What modem? [link] [comments] |
Is PPTP secure enough for home usage? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 12:52 PM PDT I am using DDWRT's built in PPTP server to access my home network on the go. I have heard that there are some pretty serious vulnerabilities with PPTP, even with MPPE encryption enabled. Are they serious enough that I should switch to L2TP or OpenVPN? [link] [comments] |
Just moved to bigger house. Looking for best solution. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:28 PM PDT Hey everyone. Just moved from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 1750sqft 1 level house. I currently have a ASUS RT-AC68U that I bought in 2015 that still works fine, but would like better range. Trying to find the best sub $300 option to make my coverage better. Should I invest in a mesh network like the Eero? Or just pickup a higher end ASUS, use that as my main router, and use the AI Mesh system? I have the ability to run Cat6 since I have a basement/crawl space. It's just my wife and I, but we have a lot of IoT devices (Samsung smartthings with light switches, bulbs, thermostat, etc), 2 Apple TVs, Harmony Hub, Desktop computer, 2 laptops , iPad, Google Home minis, Xbox. Thoughts and ideas are very appreciated! Update: I have 200mbps from Spectrum. [link] [comments] |

Running a VPN client on a server. Will my other devices be protected? Posted: 21 Oct 2018 12:12 PM PDT I asked a similar question here the other day. I got an answer but I also worded the question wrong. So here is my question: I have a laptop which I'm using as a media server. I'll call this M-server. M-server runs a program to access Live TV as well as films. M-server runs a VPN client due to the nature of the content I'm accessing. The program i run on M-server has a web client allowing local devices to connect. Although the traffic between M-server and devices connecting to the web client on M-server will not be encrypted or routed via the VPN client on, is it necessary for me to route each local device, connecting to M-server, through a VPN client in order to hide my traffic from my ISP? OR As M-server is sending and receiving the Live TV and movie traffic from the internet, which is routed via the VPN, can the devices that are accessing this content from the M-server web client locally run without a VPN with no worry of my ISP knowing By typing all of that I may have actually answered my own question. Surely ISP's can't see local traffic? However, I can also have remote access to M-server. Will remote clients need to run their own VPN client or will they follow the same rules as local devices? Long post sorry. Appreciate any advice [link] [comments] |
FiOS-G1100 with older ECB2500C and newer ECB6200 Posted: 21 Oct 2018 11:47 AM PDT Currently on Frontier FIOS (formerly Verizon). I'm looking for a solution to my problem using FiOS-G1100 and 2 different versions of MoCA adapters. My FiOS-G1100 router is connected to ONT via coax (no Cat 5 anywhere in home except from switch ports to other equipment). For several years I've used 4 Actiontec ECB2500C connected to coax connections in other rooms and to bring wired network connections to those rooms without issues. There are a couple of other rooms with coax that that I want to extend the wired network into but could no longer source the ECB2500C adapters. So I went with the newer ECB6200K02 2 pack kit. I realize the older are not MoCA 2.0 and the newer ones are but I don't mid if the newer fall back to MoCA 1.0/1.1 speeds, I just want it to work like it did before when only the ECB2500C were connected. I'm hoping somebody can point out what may be wrong, what I need to tweak, how I need to connect things, or if I have components in the configuration that are just not compatible. I just want everything to play nice but with the 2 newer adapters causing issues, I don't want to throw money at the problem and replace the older ECB2500Cs with newer ECB6200s especially when I cannot pinpoint the root culprit. I've tried connecting a described via a splitter with on connected to a switch port on the FiOS-G1100 and still have the same problem. I'm not a fan of the FiOS-G1100 because of the interface but I don't know of any alternative with a coax WAN port that give me the feature set I get with other consumer routers that I can purchase. SYMPTOMS Whenever I plug both of the ECB6200s in, the network becomes very unstable. I lose the connection to the router and wi-fi and anything connected to the older ECB2500C also stops responding. When I can get momentary visibility, it appears that things that were originally using 192.168.1.x addresses, now have 192.168.0.x addresses. It's really sporadic in that the interfaces will respond, then timeout, then respond again, in a never ending cycle of chaos. Removing the ECB6200s and rebooting the router and older MoCA adapters brings things back into order. One strange thing is that when I plug only 1 of the ECB6200s into a room, things remain stable but as soon as the second one is connected, it all turns to shit. CONNECTIVITY
If I'm missing something totally obvious, any feedback/help/criticism is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks. EDIT - formatting [link] [comments] |
[Help] Apps lagging on home wifi but not LTE. Can't figure out what is wrong. Posted: 21 Oct 2018 02:05 AM PDT Hi Guys! I have spectrum cable internet and my own router (Netgear CM500-100NAS) and modem (Archer C7 v2). I've been running into this issue for the past couple of weeks and I need your help solving it! So the bandwith and ping are find on my phone but the latency of getting a connection is very slow. Like when I want to run the ping test it takes awhile for it to connect but once it does it works fine. When I launch certain apps I notice the loading screen is stuck at 0% on my phone (Galaxy S8+) for a few minutes but then once it connects everything is normalish. When I connect using carrier data everything is fast so I know the issue is with my modem / router. What I tried so far: I've powered down my router, modem, phone and restarted all of them. I've changed my DNS from my ISP to google. Reinstalling the Apps on my phone. Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Looking for Affordable Router for Gigabit Posted: 21 Oct 2018 10:11 AM PDT Recently upgraded to Rogers Gigabit, and my old DIR-655 isn't up to the task (caps at 225mbps). The Rogers modem/router sucks, causing constant buffering on Twitch/Youtube/Netflix (the DIR-655 eliminates this issue). I don't care too much for wireless performance (I don't want crappy performance but standard 300mbps would be fine), I am more concerned about getting full advantage of my Gigabit from wired (direct connection I can reach about 925). What are the suggestions for the $75-150 price range? [link] [comments] |
[Help] Wifi randomly disconnecting itself Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:30 AM PDT I've been having issues with my internet for a while now where my wifi will sometimes randomly disconnect for a good few minutes. I just randomly lose the ability to go on the internet via my wifi with everything: my phone, laptop, computer, gaming console, etc. This tends to happen at least once or twice a day, and it's very frustrating, especially when in the middle of playing online games. I'm tempted to say it must be my router, but after looking things up on this subreddit I'm unsure. Some people say this can be attributed to the modem, or cables, or some other things. I was going to look into purchasing a new router, but I'd like to know if that's even a wise choice since the router apparently might not be the issue. Also, my provider is Spectrum, and my current router is a Technicolor TC8715D. So, does anyone know how to fix this? What exactly is causing it? [link] [comments] |
