Stuck with massively expensive satellite internet and desperately need network monitoring program to establish who the data sponges are and put a stop to them

Potential Limitations to be aware of (don't know if relevant, figured I'd put it out there straight up, just in case):

    I live in Australia

I have access only to satellite internet

I live in a little corner of the world where I cannot access any kind of fixed line or mobile internet and as such am subscribed to the Sky Muster (II) satellite. Satellite internet is eye-wateringly expensive and fair-use data limited (regardless of how many people use your connection), meaning I can only purchase so many GB of data within a 4 week period and that has to do for my family of 5, all with laptops/ipads/phones/tvs, so we consume a lot of gold-plated internet-flavoured gigabytes.

After going over our limit and being throttled several months in a row to speeds so slow it gives you far too much downtime to plot murders and shit I yelled at spoke to the kids (again, but in my "don't poke the bear" voice this time) about why we don't use our playstation all night or watch youtube all afternoon. This wasn't successful in stopping the problem and I had to cut them off. This is not a viable long-term solution as two of them are in high school and need the net for their homework. And my son is 17 and single, so in all fairness he should be able to access the net for recreational purposes too. I'm not a monster.

I blocked them simply by blacklisting them through our router firmware interface. The firmware I speak of though (D-Link router DIR-859 v1.05), is very basic and lacks the ability to do much more than allow you to appoint immature names to devices like "Princess Whingeybitch" (husband's phone) and change the wifi channel passwords.

I want some kind of program/interface/firmware that is capable of -

    • long-term monitoring and graphing internet usage by device; and
    • ideally where that internetting is being done (website names); and which
    • has some degree of ability to throttle or ration data vacuums; and which is
    • reasonably idiot proof.

I've tried blundering and bluffing my way through this problem through the use of an obscene amount of software, none of which has done what I need. Programs I have tried are too numerous to list, but have included countless "ip scanner" programs, and most recently, Colasoft Capsa 11 and ntop.

Obviously freeware would be great, but I'm willing to shell out for just the right piece of software if it does everything I need in a user-friendly manner.

I have dedicated many hours over many months attempting to figure this out for myself, but I just can't. I'm not completely clueless with a computer, so friendly advice along with remotely clear instructions should be adequate for me to sort this out.

    Thank you in advance.

Anyone here have the Linksys gaming router WRT32X?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:35 PM PDT

I found someone with a good price on one. I'm thinking of getting it. I currently have a Linksys EA6350.

    Time to go prosumer?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:06 AM PDT

I used to sing the praises of my Netgear Nighthawk X6 R8000, but lately it's really starting to piss me off and I'm starting to wonder if I should go with something more along prosumer lines.

Problems I'm encountering w/ the current Netgear:

    • I'm hitting the limit on the number of assigned IPs that it can handle (60). I really need more capacity than that.
    • It used to work great, but now the unit is flaking out on reserving IPs. I rely on static IPs for presence detection in my home automation setup, and iOS devices will suddenly wind up "not home" because the router has assigned an unexpected IP. (Assigning IPs on the device evidently isn't an option. Not sure if it's an iOS bug or a router incompatibility, but long story short, that just DOES NOT work.)
    • The list of "Connected Devices" from the router is incomplete. Devices that I know are connected to my network just don't show there. Searching seems to indicate that this is a known, long-standing bug.

Features that I'd need with the next unit:

    • At least 4 LAN ports in addition to the 1 WAN port.
    • Filtering by MAC address. The Netgear came with Disney Circle built-in for free. (Yeah, I know you hardcore geeks sniff at Disney Circle. But I'm telling you, it works really, really well.) I don't have to have Disney Circle per se, but I must have a way to filter by MAC address, and the Circle's approach of assigning devices to people and then filtering based on who the device belongs to is great.
    • Until very recently I've blocked access on a schedule for my kids. They're now old enough that I don't think I'll use that going forward, but it'd be nice to have that as an option should the need arise. That may b something that just about any router would be capable of.
    • Ability to back up and restore configuration files.

NB: I have a Pakedge WK-1 WAP installed in a second-story closet. I love that thing. It is absolutely worry-free. I bet I don't log into it twice a year.

    How to setup RDP w/VPN?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:57 PM PDT

I need to remote access my desktop a few miles away with a laptop. Both computers run W10 Pro and use a software VPN (Private Internet Access). The desktop is using a wired connection to a Motorola modem, if I need to get anything like a pfSense box that's not a problem.

I would like to use RDP, but I am having a hard time finding any guides or tutorials on how to set this up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Am I forced to use my city's internet?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:00 PM PDT

I am moving to a new city. I am searching for available providers, and I can't get the new address to come up in any of their systems. I got to looking, and it turns out the city offers internet and cable. Sadly, the speeds are trash and expensive. Here is their breakdown:

    Download/Upload Speed

    Monthly Fee

    2Mbps/1Mbps - $21.95

    8Mbps/2Mbps - $34.95

    25Mbps/3Mbps - $44.95

    50Mbps/5Mbps - $69.95

    75Mbps/8Mbps - $99.95

    100Mbps/10Mbps - $129.95

Does it seem like this is my only option? Thoughts? This is my first house so I've never gone through this process. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Repurposing phone jacks?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:41 PM PDT

I have cable Internet but the house is wired with Phone lines. We don't use them. Can I snip it at the box in the basement and connect an Ethernet port to the jack? Theres 8 wires in the wall. Not sure if this is appropriate to do or not.

    R7000P 533mhz ram speed & R7000 800mhz ram speed???

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:19 PM PDT

Im curious if anyone can explain to me why the "upgraded" version of the R7000P has 533mhz ram speed and the regular r7000 has 800mhz...

Is this going to make a big difference? I have both and just want to make sure I use the right one as my AP and the other is going to be the main router connected to the ONT.

Would overclocking the ram speed to 800 produce any noticeable results?

    WiFi extender

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:27 PM PDT

I'm having trouble selecting a WiFi range extender for my home. The modem is in the basement and the signal strength is decent but not full capacity on the second floor.

My modem is netgear ac1900 modem router c7000 dual band. I think one that is on 2.4 GHz will likely work okay - but I want full capacity to the 5 ghz without breaking the bank. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Restrict the speed of a ethernet/network/subnet

Hi, to restrict the up/down speed to a specific ethernet/network, do I just need to get a "managed switch", and is it fairly straightforward to set up? Thanks!

Redirect domain to a port which is not 80 (no-ip)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:18 PM PDT

My question is based on my thought that domains generally request port 80 (please correct me if i am wrong). With Apache you can set up virtual hosts etc. I know about that.

But what if i have an ubuntu server with Apache and a domain running on it (perfectly fine) but for another application (teamspeak) i want to use a no-ip domain that redirects to the teamspeak port. Is that possible? I know about Apache's proxy settings but is that what i would have to use? Or some internal thing from Ubuntu?

    Thanks for your time.

Connect the eap secured ethernet to a wifi router?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:01 AM PDT

My uni provides a free internet. Unfortunately we don't have Wi-Fi, only the Ethernet cable with eap protocol to authenticate every student. I wish to connect a wifi router in my room. However, all I can find is enterprise grade eap routers. What should I look for? Can I do this with a typical old router?

Powerline adapter - Wil i get higher speeds at my pc when i get faster internet from provider?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 01:06 PM PDT

In my home i use a powerline adapter, I'm not yet pleased by the speed i get on my pc.

I get 40mbit/s speed to my home. With the powerline adapter i get 30mbit/s on my pc.

If i get faster internet, like 200mbit/s wil i also get higher speeds at my pc or wil it stay at 30mbit/s?

First time leaving the nest in need of modem guidence

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 12:53 PM PDT

So I'm moving out finally. I'll be picking up Comcast 250mb/s internet package (a deal with the devil I know). I have a router that my dad bought and upgraded from that goes up to 350mb/s. The only thing I need is a modem.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.tomsguide.com/us/best-modems,review-2832.html

I was using that as a guide but then I discovered that 3.0 and 3.1 is a thing. Not entirely sure which one I need.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M981YYL/ref=dp_ob_neva_mobile?th=1&psc=1

I like the look of this guy. I'm not sure if Comcast supports 3.1. Currently on chat with them but he's not to the answering questions part of my tour.

So any thoughts? I eventually want to get up to gb/s internet but I can't right now until I'm more stable.

    Thank you for your help

USB ports on Sockets w/ Power line Adapters

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 12:39 PM PDT

Do we have any thoughts on this? I have found my powerline adapters cutting off quite a bit recently, and I am eyeing up the built in USB ports on the sockets as possible culprits.

    Looking to set up MoCA

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 12:13 PM PDT

My house doesn't have any useful built-in ethernet or coax ports, but we do have a coax still running between rooms from an old DISH service, conveniently exactly where I'd like it for this purpose.

I have 2 routers. The main one provided by Frontier supports MoCA and has an open coax port (came with a switch where Frontier's coax goes in, then connects to router through ethernet + usb). The second is just gathering dust, and I want to put it to use, but it doesn't support MoCA.

I just hooked up each end of the coax to a router, hoping for the best, but it doesn't seem to work. The second router has no connection and the main router says MoCA PHY Status: Down. I'm assuming this means I'll need an adapter and switch (or this?) in place of the second router, or would it indicate an issue with the coax cable? Or maybe I'm just doing something incorrectly?

Wired speeds are fast but the same as wifi...

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:56 AM PDT

I know that wired should be faster than wifi but when doing some speed testing this afternoon i was getting the same results basically. It was fast and was still within my internet plan with my isp but its still confusing to me.

So i Have a 100/100 FTTH connection. I did the testing via xbox one x inside its network settings. I am in Florida and I am pretty sure when you do the xbox test its getting all the results from Seattle so thats not very close to me at all

15 tests were done. On 5.0ghz wifi my average was :

136 mbps download, 102mbps upload, and latency average was 57

On wired connection I had 145 mbps download, 117 mbps upload and latency was 53

It's probably not a cause for concern or anything but its confusing to me how its that close... My router was allllllllllll the way upstairs in the laundry room.

    Need some Tech Advice

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 01:25 AM PDT

well ive recently become aware of some funny business going on with my computer/internet.

i got an email saying i was trying to sign into my amazon account at 6am when i was sleeping.

i tried to log on to amazon, and right after signing in i get redirected to another amazon page that says "due to amazons 2018s rules" (or whatever) and it was prompting me to put in my social security number, bday, and cc info. and no matter where i clicked it would always redirect to that page. i looked it up online and found a post here on reddit about the same damn thing. malware, website redirect, possible network infection since it does it on all devices, but when disconnected from wifi and just use 4g lte cell data, i can access the normal amazon site.

    deleted that account.

one night after booting and signing into the desktop, i saw a program window pop up shortly, it said samba in the top left. but it just disappears. then i heard something like youtube ads playing in the background even when no programs were open. i opened task manager, and clicked end task on the programs doing it, but they kept playing. then i clicked end task, while opening file location of program and deleting the file, then running eraser on my recycle bin.

    ok ads went away.

im in the process of removing viruses from my pc, with some luck with malwarebytes and avast. which sucks btw.

well just recently i noticed when i go to choose my wifi connection, (i have 2 bands, a 2.4ghz and a 5ghz) i saw there was a third network named "hidden network". but it would dissapear after 10-15 seconds. i live in the country. no neighbors. there should be no other networks. and the signal was full blast too.

if seeing that alone wasnt enough to send a red flag, i remember reading an article online couple days before about being hacked or something and one of the replies said to check your network connections to make sure you dont see your ssid twice.

    well shit.

well, i know i see my ssid twice, because of the 2.4 and 5ghz bands, but the hidden network? whats that about.

Please reddit, i need someone to give me advice on everything i just listed here and ways to successfully fix each one. i mean, at first i thought it was just my computer and maybe i can do a fresh install of windows, but then i saw that hidden network on my wifi.

is my network compromised? i called my isp and asked if they could give me a new ip address but he told me that the ip is always changing. maybe something to do with my router, could i remedy it by changing something in the router console in firefox?

for the love of bob, please help.

    begging cringe..

Connecting Two Houses 110m (360ft) apart

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:36 AM PDT

Hello /r/HomeNetworking, i've been lurking this subreddit for quite some time but never made a topic, so here it goes: I have a cable 100/15 internet connection on the origin (House 1) and Share it to the Destination House (House 2).

    Pics

I've thought about running a cable from one house to the other since the terrain in between houses is owned by a family member, but really I don't wanna deal with the hassle of digging a trench and burying the cable there, and also there are quite a few lightning strikes in the area in certain months of the year, so I've thought of attaching a parabolic antenna on each chimney in order to create a wireless bridge between the houses. I've researched some Ubiquiti products like Nanobeam and Litebeam. There are a few houses there but overall the 2.4Ghz Band is pretty uncongested and I couldn't find a single 5Ghz Wifi network in the surroundings. Also, if I do a PTP Wireless Bridge Chimney to Chimney there are no trees in the path. What you guys think about this products?

Are there any other options, cheaper preferably? My goals are to reach the same internet speeds in each house and low latency ( < 5ms ) if possible.

    Netgear nighthawk r7000

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:43 AM PDT

While trying to log in to do a firmware update for my router i seem to have forgot my password to the "admin" portion of my login. I was able to log in with my email for that portion of the login but then it gave me another area to log in to and for some reason none of my passwords that I regularly use will work on this. I can't find a password reset for this either so i'm stuck. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! TIA

Is it possible to have my DSL provider be different from my phone provider?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:08 AM PDT

Is it possible to have my DSL provider be different from my phone provider (same jack/line)?

I already have a phone provider, but want to set up DSL internet in my home with a different company. Is that possible? Would there usually be a dry loop fee, and does a technician need to come in to set up the lines?
