Wondering the best way to do this...

    https://imgur.com/a/l1IYOGu

So we just closed on our house today, and the first thing I did was set up our new modem/router. Spectrum had let us know there was already a live line in the home. The room in the photos is going to be the gaming/office room where I will have an L shaped desk in the left corner under the window.

My pc/xbox will be set up over there as well, and as you can see the coaxial cable is currently running through the closet. It's not very long and wouldn't be able to stretch it to the other corner, nor would I want to. The goal would be to somehow get the wiring to come out directly behind the desk so I can snake it directly up into the modem cleanly.

    • what would need to be done to accomplish this? Are there such things as extensions or would I need spectrum to come out and run new line?

    • The owners before us were the original owners and are elderly, so I'm not sure how outdated this line might even be. How would I tell? My service is 100Mbps and I don't want to run into any issues with latency etc. down the line. Is coax the most efficient way to run internet?

Any info on this is appreciated.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this carpet will be coming up as there's fresh hard wood underneath...

    Something spying in my network?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:01 AM PDT

Hey, i recently installed pi-hole on my rpi and noticed something strange:

    https://imgur.com/a/eGaOarH

this happens consistently every hour from XX:29 to XX:55, 24/7 with about 400 - 500 requests(?) peak.I found out that it is probably related to "king root" (which i never heard of or used) and some big data company.

How can i find out from which device(s) this comes from (the IP in the screenshot is from my router), and what data it contains?

Update: I changed the router's DNS from pi-hole to default and started the built-in packet capture from my router, let it run for 10 minutes and started wireshark.

Using http.host contains "qq.com", i found that the packets are coming entirely from my smartphone (Huawei p10).
There is no "kingroot" or "qq" or anything related in the installed-app's list, but i found a "qqsecure" folder with a "e_config" file in it.
I tried reading the contents but it's just a short file with some "?"'s and "melody"-string in it.
No idea how this, whatever it is, got on the phone, especially since i haven't installed anything new for months and am pretty careful.
There is just one problem now: i turned this phone (and all other android devices) off this morning, but the requests were still coming.
Even without a running OS the phone tried sending something home, how is that possible?

    Drilling walls lesson learned

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:56 AM PDT

Installing a network in my church. Rack is in a cupboard loft. I need to pass a lot of cat6 through a wall that turns out to be two layers of brick and one of breezeblock (cinder block). No problem, I have a big long drill bit. Hole drilled, cables run.

Then I needed an additional hole next to it for more cables. So I drill, as parallel to the first one as I can. Suddenly, the existing wires pull tight, the drill bit stops and I get an email warning me three APs have gone down.

Yes, I wasn't that parallel, and the insulation in one of the cavities seems to have tangled around the drill bit, pulled the existing cables across and got them chewed up by the drill.

Looking for a good resource to learn routing concepts

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:13 PM PDT

I can set up my home network, but it is very basic. One subnet with a small DHCP range and a few static IP...basic.

I am looking to set up a test/play/lab network and will need to get a little deeper in the weeds with multiple subnets, possibly some vlans, and then some inter-subnet routes to share the one ISP connection.

Help with Ethernet on Cisco Meraki MR33

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:43 PM PDT

I live in a fraternity house and the wireless internet is pretty shoddy. Lots of my buddies are trying to play Black Ops 4 together, but because our internet is bad most of us have Strict NAT types. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the router login so I cannot even attempt to port forward, which is what I found to be the main solution to the problem. However, I do have an ethernet cable and found the local access point in my hallway. It is a Cisco Meraki MR33. If I get access to this access point, am I able to plug an ethernet cable straight from it to my Xbox? I'm not familiar with the inside of the MR33, and it is locked so I can't see inside of it. My roommate is the house manager though so I'm sure we could open it. Follow-up question: If I get an ethernet cord inside of the MR33, would it in any way disrupt the wifi of the entire house? I'm not trying to cause a wifi blackout for 60+ people.

    Thanks for your help.

If I go with Spectrum's modem-only offering (no WiFi), do I need a router?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:18 PM PDT

Essentially the title -- moving to my own place, trying to figure out how I'm going to network.

I could go with their default wifi-included modem but that's an additional $5/month, and I know I'll be happier with my own setup (mostly because my current living situation has one and it goes down frequently). But what I'm unsure of is if I need to go for a wireless router (or WAP+Router setup), or if I can just get a WAP alone?

    Very odd request.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:21 PM PDT

Wondering quite what equipment I would need for this.

I want an ethernet switch that throttles ALL ethernet-ports to 300kbps down and 50kbps up when activity is detected from ANY ethernet-port on port UDP 500, and IPSEC 4500.

Anyway we can pull this off?

    Advice needed, running Cat6 cables

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:36 PM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

I currently reside in Ontario, Canada. I am in the midst of starting my home networking in my 2 storey + basement home that is fully finished (no exposed studs). I purchased various Ubiquiti units to do so; Unifi security Gateway Router, Ubiquiti UAP-AC Lite, Unifi Cloud Key-Remote (waiting for unit), Ubiquiti 150w 8-port POE switch (waiting for unit) and also looking at patch panels for the near future.

Now that I got the hardware out of the way, my home was built in the 70's and currently have a mess of Coax and Telephone Wires pulled throughout the home behind the walls into various locations of the house. These wires are currently stapled onto studs and daisy chained (from what I can see) so using these to fish the new cat6 wont be an option. I will be running through interior walls to avoid any insulation between the studs, the panel will be located in the basement of the home and all wires will be pulled from there.

Here is a general layout of my home:

    Basement

    First Floor

    Second Floor

My plan is currently to pull about 2-4 Cat6 wires into Room #1 (location of my Main Desktop/game room), Room #2 (bedroom), Master bedroom (bedroom), Living room and set up one AP in the living room and the second AP location will be wired either in the upstairs hallway or Room #1 for future installation. The basement currently at this moment is not being used and will be renovated in the coming years which at that point I will pull additional Cat6 once the walls are exposed.

Bare with my as this would be my first time doing such a project (I am only 26). I currently have various items like fishing wires, crimping tools, punch down tool, RJ45 connectors. Would it be wise to buy drill bit extensions to get through firebreak between the studs if needed or just pumpkin cut the drywall at these locations and do it that way.

The next thing in my mind is since I am planning to have around 2-4 Cat6 ports in the 2nd floor rooms, will I have to run 7-13 wires from the basement to the attic to distribute to each location or is there a better way of doing this. FYI, summer could get up to 45C (113F) and winter -45C (-49F). I am looking at running the cables following my AC duct work (not inside the actual duct) to the 2nd floor. If I do run all these wires from the basement how would I go about doing so, would it be wise to run a preliminary Cat6 and use it as a fishing wire for the next 7-13 I would have to pull, I know the firebreaks will not fit that many at once. Or will it be more of a tedious thing and will have to do 1-2 at a time which is fine by me, will just take a while longer.

Currently my modem is located in the basement beside the breaker box connected to a cable that was ran from a box outside of the house and into the basement. The reason for me keeping it down in the basement is because I don't know the future of my family just yet and will most likely need those rooms for kids. There is a space a few meters away from the breaker box that would be perfect to set up as a rack for all this and make it look professional.

Yes, this might be overkill for this home and the number of connections we have now but I want to build something that is future proof for many years and I want to do this right the first time because I am not going to want to do it again, at least in the near future. This is a huge undertaking for me but I am a Techie so I enjoy the process and look forward to putting in the work to reap the rewards.

Sorry for the long write up, I would appreciate any feedback some of you guys may have that have done this in the past and are more experienced doing so. Thank you very much for your time I really appreciate it.

    Cheers.

    Mesh/Router/Networking Recommendations for New House

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 10:22 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a new house that is almost done and looking for recommendations. The house is two stories with a basement, around 3600 sq feet. I have ethernet running throughout most of the house and have gigabit up and down. What are you recommendations for networking? I will have the TVs/Rokus/Streaming devices hard wired but what is reliable for those people using wireless?

Possible router issue with two xboxs?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:02 PM PDT

My friend and I have been playing Titanfall 2 for about a year on the same network on 2 Xboxes. Starting Saturday, we have been getting lag and disconnecting to the main menu with a connection timed out message. For us the match starts out a little laggy but when we die and try to respawn is when we run the risk of getting disconnected. Sometimes we get disconnected at the start of match.

We can play just fine when we aren't in a party with no issues.
When I unplug my router and replug it back in it works fine for about half an hour to an hour. Nothing has changed in my set up, is my router going bad?

Have I properly setup my old router/modem with my new router?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:03 PM PDT

I recently bought the Netgear Nighthawk R6900, and I'm trying to use it as my new router while using my old Technicolor TC8715D router/modem just as a modem. I've heard people say that the router/modem has to be put into "bridge mode," but I'm having difficulty finding that in the TC8715D's settings.

I've hooked up the ethernet cable b/w the TC8715D and the R6900, I turned the R6900 on, and the router's wifi network is available and I'm connected to it, but from there I don't know if there's more to be done or what. Someone living with me claims the router instantly started working b/c they saw maxed out bars on their phone afterwards, but I'm not convinced everything's properly set up. Should the TC8715D's wifi signals (dual band) still be up along with the R6900's? Because they are currently.

Static IP + smb not working

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:03 AM PDT

    Hey,

I just recently had to move and I just tried to set up my Kodi but it couldn't find my PC. So I attempted to ping it with my phone and it too can't reach the host. I have set up static LAN IP on the router for my desktop because editing sources on Kodi is a nightmare and I'd have to reload and re-edit my entire library of 600 or so titles which I REALLY want to avoid. The router is some Technicolor from the ISP (specifics below). It was more or less the same as from my old place and to my knowledge everything is set up the same. Interbutts is working fine on my desktop. I can see it has the LAN IP I assigned using a "static lease" on the router. Samba File Sharing is enabled on the router. Kodi + Desktop + Router all rebooted. The one thing that I know for a fact differs is me having to use wireless now instead. I don't know where to go from here or what could be tripping things up.

    Product Vendor Technicolor

Product Name Telia WiFi-router Plus v3

    Software Version 17.2

    Firmware Version 17.2.0339-1441018-20180416103837

    Hardware Version VBNT-H

Switched from broadband to fibre - Hub works in master, but not extension socket.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:25 PM PDT

    Hey,

We switched over from Sky broadband to fibre and the Sky hub doesn't work when it's plugged into the upstairs extension socket, which it previously did.

The master socket downstairs works fine though.

The engineer came and fitted a 'Master Socket 5C - Openreach MK4' with an input for broadband and the phone line downstairs, whereas the upstairs socket just has a telephone input and no name.

I tried the Hub upstairs with and without a filter with no luck.

It's not at all practical to run an ethernet cable from downstairs to where the PC is upstairs.

I've read about Home Plugs, but the plug sockets would be on different circuits and probably have to be plugged into extension leads both ends, so I'm not sure what sort of speeds we might get, although I guess it is an option.

Do you know how we can get the Sky Hub to work upstairs? What might need to be fitted etc.?

    Thanks for your help!

Using a Netgear r6400v2 with Asus RT N66?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:34 AM PDT

Current router: Netgear R6400 v2. Somehow we are using nearly a terabyte a month. 5 people , no torrenting, no heavy gaming other than Fortnite. Kids are homeschooled so their schooling is all online, but I don't think it uses that much data because people are able to use the service on ISPs that have crappy caps. We do stream a lot (a LOT) using the Charter Spectrum app, Netflix (low quality setting mostly), Hulu, Prime, and the kids watch a ton of YouTube. A terabyte seems really excessive to me and I'd like to pin down the culprit.

I have a Asus RT N66 that ran Asusmerlin and would measure data used per device, it was starting to die as wifi would drop out, intermittently (the network with disappear briefly 10-15 seconds multiple times a day), so it was replaced (no drop outs with new router).

Is it possible to use the Asus to measure the per device usage while using the Netgear for everything else? I'm the one that set up the network, I can follow a guide just fine, but I know/understand next to nothing about networking. I realize the Netgear can be flashed with dd-wrt, but from what I saw it didn't have the straightforward traffic monitor built in like Asusmerlin did, the flashing process not as dummy-proof , and the builds more experimental.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Replacing the Netgear isn't an option, it's several months old and works great, covers whole house, but just lacks a decent traffic monitor. I'm willing to replace the firmware if there is a stable build that has both the 2.4 and 5 GHz working well.

Is shipping always so expensive when buying bulk cables?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:52 PM PDT

Currently building a house and going to be running a lot of cat6a, 22/4, speaker and Rg6. Figured I'd just order from Monoprice... And then I saw how much they wanted for shipping! Does anyone know how to get free shipping with Monoprice? Maybe I'm just too used to my Amazon prime free shipping but $200 for shipping is crazy to me.

    Intel NICs from eBay

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:13 PM PDT

I've been browsing eBay, and recently I saw that I can find Intel I350-T4V2 for pretty cheap, this one for example costs about $55. But I just recently searched here on this subreddit for "I350" and I'm concerned about 'cheap knockoffs' - potentially like this - that are inferior to the 'real deal' products. (e.g. here, there, etc.)

Before I hit the purchase button, should I be suspicious of the product that I gave out? I'm looking for a PCIe NIC for cheap, but I don't want to end up getting a dud.

The example that I gave is from a buyer that has a '100% buyer satisfaction' and a '99.8% positive feedback', but I'm still not sure.

Increase wifi coverage - is Orbi AC3000 a good solution for me?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:38 AM PDT

I currently have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. It works well, but doesn't reach the far corners of my house, nor the pool area.

I've tried a Netgear range extender EX7500 as it promised to create a kind of mesh network with the original router, but I returned it after a week as it didn't actually increase the range and as an added bonus caused me some other issues.

I'm now considering replacing the whole thing with a set of Orbi AC3000.

The house is about 240m2, and the pool is about 15 meters from the house, without any obstructions or buildings in between. My plan is to have the Orbi router in one corner of the house (where the internet comes in), and put the satellite on the other side of the house - which should then give enough coverage to reach the pool.

I know that a better technical solution would be to run cables and put in Ubiquiti APs in various locations, but I'm not in a position to run cables through the house, so I want to keep it wireless.

I also looked at Google Wifi, but I have a bunch of devices that I need to plug in through ethernet, and Google only has 1 or 2 ethernet ports, so that means I also need to add a switch to the setup to make it all work, which I would like to avoid.

A couple of other requirements I have:

    - I need to be able to use port forwarding so that I can continue to access my RPI for home assistant.

    - I want to use the same SSID, otherwise I will have to reconfigure all the devices in my house, which I would like to avoid.

long story short: Would you recommend Netgear Orbi AC3000 in this case?

Need stronger and more stable Wifi on my 2nd floor.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:12 AM PDT

My house has 3 floors total of 4500 sq ft. My current router (apple airport extreme) is in the basement. The connection is decent in the basement and the first floor, but the 2nd floor where the bedrooms are the connection is weak, and sometimes cuts out. For example on my phone on the 2nd floor the wifi will stop working for a few minutes multiple times a day. I will get a "!" on the wifi icon on my phone. Sometimes there will be full signal strength with the "!" and other times there will 1 or 2 bars only with the "!". I also want to be able to stream in 4k on the second floor, but this is almost impossible as my TV or ps4 can never consistently connect to the internet. My problem is that this is an old house and it is very difficult to wire ethernet throughout it. I got quoted $1000 to wire only up to the first floor and have an access point (including an ubiquiti access point), or $1500 to wire up to the 2nd floor (also including ubiquiti access point). This is way too expensive so I was thinking of buying a mesh network. I would like to spend no more than $400.

I am considering the Netgear orbi ac3000 Rbk 50

    OR

The Ubiquiti amplify Hd router and one mesh point.

    OR

The Orbi Ac2200 rbk40 which is cheaper but I'm not sure if it will be good enough.

I would put the mesh point somewhere on the first floor and keep the new router in the same place in the basement. My internet speed is 150Mbps.

All I want is a consistent connection that is strong enough on the 2nd floor so I can stream 4k and use my internet on my phone with no issues. Should I get the amplify HD or the one of the orbi's? Or is there a better option for me that is under $400? I could also get a another quote from different technician too.

An issue; Asus RT-AC68U with Tplink wireless extender TL-WA850RE!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:39 AM PDT

My Asus router is connected to the tplink range extender and they both working smoothly, but my main issue here is that the range extender is not showing under devices in the asus router, and hence i cant set some network setting specifically for it (like QoS).

Instead the first device connected through the extender take its place in the router page and other devices look like they connected through this device! So i got a device with a note that there are 3 devices connected through it for example. And i cant access those 3 devices and alter their network setting as well, they act as one device on the asus router page; which is the first device connected to the extender!

Any solution to improve this situation, where can i see the extender as a device and also the devices connected through it separately?! if i enable DHCP in the extender, would this help?!

I need help to understand pingplotter sample

can someone explain me who should I blame for my bad internet (hardware/internet infrastructure provider/ISP)

    https://imgur.com/a/DoDNzMA

I usually have packetloss, high ping and slow internet from the noon till mid night.. I'm paying for 200mpbs speed and for 5mpbs upload, and I usually have 90-30 at night (my pc is connected with a cable to the router and the router is very close to the computer).A technician came twice already and replaced my router and a 3-ways splitter (I guess its for the tv, phone and the internet).

btw, when I call to my ISP they tell me that I have a problem with my internet intensity and that it can be caused only by the hardware I'm using (thats why they keep offering me technician.. -.- and every time I need to wait 2 weeks for him to come).

Which setup should I go for?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:14 AM PDT

    Hi guys!

So I have a xiaomi Mi3 router pro connected in my living room. I have a TV, ps4 and minix neo u1 all wired, and also a Toshiba 2tb usb3 connected to the router. All my TV shows and movies are inside this external hdd.

In the living room I have kodi sideloaded via SD card through the box via libreelec and I play all files via smb. Usually it works fine. The TV is "half smart', it has some apps like YouTube, Netflix, plex, aircast, any view cast. I basically only use Netflix which has a shortcut button on the remote and works well.

In my room I have another TV, with a chromecast and a raspberry pi3 connected. I like watching my shows there too, and normally use kodi side loaded through via librelec on the pi. The thing is if files have higher bitrate the quality becomes sh*t, it starts buffering, and overall it's not a nice experience.

Given this setup what could I do to get a good experience in my room? Get rid of the pi and use the chromecast somehow?

Also is there a better set up to use in the room? Maybe use the box as a plex server and use the plex app on the TV?

Is there any hardware I could buy to improve things??

    Thanks for all the help!
