I don't do any CAD at the moment, but might do in the future. I use the following programs at school. (3rd semester). - MatLab + Simulink - Xilinx Vivado (We use a Xlinx microcontroller with a usb-A.) - Visual Studio I play the following games. - League of Legends - Hearthstone - CSGO I want solid built quality in terms of chassis material. Right now I have a desktop with the following specs. - i7 4790 - R9 255 - 16gb 1600mhz ddr3 - 500gb samsung evo 860 ssd. I use two monitors one is 144hz hooked up with displayport and another 60hz with hdmi. They are both FHD. I don't know if I should get a laptop that can replace my desktop and be used for school or just a weaker laptop and upgrade my desktop down the line. If I choose to get a laptop I want to dock it up with my keyboard, mouse, headset (G933) so it uses 2 usb-a. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:21 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:*\* Around 2000€ (\~2000USD), buying it in Spain **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I have been looking some other post similar to this one, but I would love to see your recomendations! [link] [comments] |
Laptop for Grad Student Research ~$1500 Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:39 PM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1500 and USA willing to flex a bit for the right option **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life and performance **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I'll be carrying it a lot, so I would prefer relatively light. My previous one was around 7ish lbs and I could feel it every day. **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows preferred **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13-15" preferably **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** light photo editing, lots of excel/word/ppt, DNA analysis (relatively light work, but better RAM certainly wouldn't hurt), and lots of tabs in chrome (right now I think I have ~50 in my main window with 5 side windows-I like having papers right there), maybe a bit of programming, but we have a cluster for anything serious **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Maybe like an old copy of VtMB for travel (stuck in an airport without wifi/long flights), but nothing too serious. **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I need a good keyboard, high build quality, but don't need (or really want) touch screen or finger print reader. I've already got a USB optical drive I can use. I'll need an external drive for daily backups (required by the feds to save everything externally. Feel free to suggest some options there too if you have any in mind). Looking for 1TB memory, preferably at least partly in SSD form; 12-16 GB RAM; HDMI; good (>8hrs) battery life **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I want to carry it around every day, so size and weight are pretty important. I also need enough RAM that I can open a ~1500 base pair length of DNA and have chrome work alright with the rest. Battery life is important when I'm presenting or just writing. I guess HD would be nice if I get stuck in the lab late waiting for something to run and want to watch netflix. Edit: If it can run cool/quiet too, that'd be fantastic. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:17 PM PDT Hey, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but is it true that the Gtx 1060 model of the Lenovo legion y530 has almost double the battery life of the 1050ti model? On a webstore (the only one I found selling the gtx 1060model in Finland) they say that the 1050ti has 5 hours of battery life and the 1060 model has 9.4 hours of battery life. The one with the 1060 has a 57whr battery and the one with thw 1050ti has a 52.2whr. Everything else between these two models is the same. [link] [comments] |

Suggestions for detachable 2 in 1 laptop similar to Microsoft Surface Book 2 Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:05 PM PDT Hello all, I am looking to replace my laptop with something quiet and lightweight, a 2 in 1 that has a detachable tablet mode. I will be using it for everyday casual use, light gaming (mostly streaming via steam from my desktop), media streaming and CAD. I would like for it to charge via USB-C (also called Thunderbolt 3 iirc?) as I a Google Pixel XL and a Nintendo Switch already.

Lightest laptop that can run video editing software Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:57 PM PDT The title pretty much says it all. I'm physically disabled but need to travel often so I want the lightest possible laptop that can also run editing software (preferably adobe premiere but I'm open to learning new software). Budget is not an issue, looking for the best and willing to pay for it. [link] [comments] |

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 vs New Apple MBA Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:04 PM PDT I've been waiting for the Apple announcement before pulling the trigger. I'll be switching from a 2017 Razer Blade Stealth. Great laptop with a bunch of hardware issues. My current one being the battery won't hold a charge past an hour. Unfortunately I have to ship the computer out to who knows where for a long turn around time on the repair, which is why I'm considering these 2 machines. Microsoft and Apple stores are both close to me to offer support for their native devices. I'm OS agnostic. Have used Macs for a long time before my current machine. My worry is the new MBA is underpowered using a dual core Y series i5 vs the quad core U i5 in the Surface Laptop 2. However my understanding is that the SSD is pretty slow in the Microsoft machine. Design seems nice for both computers.. I'll call it a wash there. Really my big question is whether the new MBA will be underpowered relative to the Surface Laptop 2 and if I'm correct about a slower SSD in the Microsoft machine or not (and how much that really matters) If you have an alternative suggestion I'm all ears by the way! My use case/needs: - heavy internet browser usage. I'm a day trader by profession and thankfully my software is pretty light but it is mostly web based. - good battery life (ideally "all day?") ... And that's it really. Thanks everyone in advance [link] [comments] |
Just something reliable for once... 13', US, 1000$ Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:00 PM PDT
I just want something that's reliable and is good quality. I've had plenty of issues with Windows laptops. I bought one for around 600$ and it was way too heavy and felt a bit cheap. I went for a Surface product (Surface 3) and had a plethora of issues that still go on to this day. That's what inspired me to ask this. And from reading /r/Surface for the past few years and seeing the lack of Consumer Reports recommendation, I'm led to believe the higher end models have the same shit. I was thinking a MacBook Pro but I don't like the new keyboard and I keep hearing about the issues the ones from the past four years have had. So nothing really seems suitable anymore if both "premium" products from Microsoft and Apple many issues today. Which is disappointing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:30 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** I can go from 700 to 1,350, maybe even more if there's an extremely good laptop for that money. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I don't need a great battery life since I'll just be using this around the house. I wont really be taking it to the library or anything. I dont like 2-1 laptops * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** As thin and light as possible for my other preferences stated below (while recommending the best laptop for my preferences) * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 14-15.6 inches * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere. Gaming but only depending on the laptop recommended and it's given price. If I get recommended a 700 dollar laptop that cant game too great then it's not much of a big deal cause I can just get a console, but if it's a gaming laptop of over $900 with good specs then I'll just game on that. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** If the laptop is more high end, AAA games. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** As long as the keyboard isnt too shallow (at least 1.4mm of travel) and a decent display. The trackpad doesn't matter too much to me since I'll be using a USB mouse, but I'd still like the trackpad to work well (the reason why I mention this is explained later). * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** So to be honest, I'm willing to look at both gaming laptops (no more than 1,350) and all-purpose cheaper laptops (like $600-800). Laptops I'm interested in (but I'm hesitant on) are: Dell G7 (But I hear Dell released this new bios that messes with the fan curve) Hp Omen (but I just want to look more and see if I can settle on anything cheaper) Lenovo Legion Y530 (But it seems like an awful value for what you're getting, but 850 for an i5 and gtx 1050ti with thin bezels, nice design, white backlighting seems okay, but no SSD and only 8GB of RAM) Asus Vivobook S15 S510 (But the keyboard flex and trackpad and QC issues are veering me away) Asus Vivobook S15 S530 (the one with colorful options) (Just not too sure on this one, and can't find an MX150 configuration anywhere) Thanks for your time. [Canada][~1000cad][15 inch] Help me find a laptop for college and some mid-range to light gaming? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:20 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Canada and my budget would be 1000 Canadian dollars, however I plan on purchasing the laptop around Black Friday / Cyber Monday so my budget would effectively be a tad higher. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money would be preferred as battery life and form factor are not an issue, although I have been looking into 2 in 1 options such as the Acer Spin 5 (gtx 1050 model) * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I don't mind carrying around a bit of weight but nothing insanely heavy. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows, although I may dual-boot with Linux on my own later. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I'd prefer a laptop close to or under 15 inches as that is what my current backpack has an inbuilt sleeve for. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I don't plan on running anything too intense, games like Paladins, tf2, and other midrange games would be what I play, nothing too crazy. Something with an 8th gen intel processor and a 1050ti or higher would be amazing but I'd settle for a 1050 just fine. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Anything that can run Paladins on high settings at 60fps would be great, and that's not exactly a hard thing to do. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I'd prefer something that doesn't have a garbage screen and keyboard as I'd be typing for long periods, and Windows Precision gestures on the touchpad would help me a lot. I don't want a laptop that feels like it's on the verge of falling apart, but mostly I'm worried about the keyboard and screen. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Some models I've taken interest in are: -[Dell G series](https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-laptops-netbooks-and-tablets/sc/laptops/g-series?~ck=bt) (although the crappy keyboards and screens make me iffy on these, especially the g3. The g5 and g7 seem to be better in some aspects so I'd be willing to consider those, especially since a family member of mine has a 5% work discount code for Dell Canada's website) -[Acer Nitro 5](https://www.acer.com/ac/en/CA/content/models/laptops/nitro5 ) (These seem great!) -[Acer spin 5](https://www.acer.com/ac/en/CA/content/model/NX.GTQAA.002 ) (a gtx 1050 in a 2in1 would be awesome and I've heard no complaints about the screen panels in these, but I've heard that thermal issues are prevalent in these models) -HP Omen series (I myself get a 13% work discount with HP, but even with that discount their gaming laptops are out of my budget range for the most part) If you folks could help me decide between these or provide any other suggestions it would be appreciated! I look forward to hearing from you. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for schoolwork and some lught gaming. Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:19 PM PDT I'm looking for a laptop around 1000$ can go a little over. I will be mainly using it for school and for some games that aren't too demanding, mostly 2d games and some 3d. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:58 PM PDT I'm looking for some options for a laptop around $1,000. I'll be using it for work which is website editing through WordPress, blogging and managing SEO. I won't need to download a bunch of software or anything, I've been using a Chromebook to do all this. I'm just looking for an upgrade because there are certain programs that would be beneficial to use that I haven't been able to. I mostly just looking for something that's reliable, can stand to be on all day (battery isn't a huge concern though), and isn't going to be useless in 3 years. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
