DevOps - How are *YOU* implementing it?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:50 AM PDT

    Buzzword alert!

Hey all. Just wanted to check in, and see how you guys were implementing the "DevOps" mindset.

    Questions:

    1. What type of network do you operate? (Campus, ISP, Small/Medium business?)
    2. What do you automate?
    3. What tools do you use to automate?

SNR margins drop by 1DB every day until router eventually loses connection and retrains. ISP clueless on whats causing it

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 10:15 AM PDT

We never had this issue before, it only started recently after a large storm we had. But our ISP is clueless on why the downstream SNR margins drop every day. We have bonded pair ADSL2+ trained at 10Mbps.

The technician came out 3 times to the exchange and has replaced the pins entirely and while the margins looked fantastic after he replaced them the SNR margins began to again degrade over several days until the modem/router would eventually lose connection and auto reboot itself and retrain the pair The margins are usually at 12DB on the downstream and 20+DB on the upstream for the pairs. It will go as low as 4DB and then reboot itself. what could be causing this issue? we even had a new router sent to us and that didnt solve it. Our ISP is ran by a bunch of loons who cant fix anything, I have to depend highly upon the internet to function properly because I work online. We are on fastchannel (fastpath) which actually helped a ton but still didnt solve the margins dropping over time. Detailed info is below.

Line 1 margins as of now:

SNR: Down: 9.0 db Upstream: 17.9 db

Attenuation: Down: 50.0 db Upstream: 29.2 db

Power: Down: 20.1 dBm Upstream: 10 dBm

Line 2 margins as of now:

SNR: Down: 7.2 db Upstream: 16.1 db

Attenuation: Down: 50.5 db Upstream: 29.2 db

Power: Down: 19.9 dBm Upstream: 10 dBm

    Extra info:

    Broadband Mode Setting: MULTIMODE

    PPP Mode: BONDED

    Management switch

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:26 PM PDT

    Hi Gang,

What are engineers using to build out a management network. Right now we are running on Cisco 4948 and Arista 7124s as distros but they are EOL. We are looking to upgrade but Cisco offerings are super expensive which i somewhat understand why.

    Requirements:

    Dual power supply

    LAG support

.....thats it. This is only for management so nothing fancy is required. Thoughts?

    ARP & DNS Spoofing

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 10:49 PM PDT

Hi. This has been in my head for the past month and bloodied out looking for a solution that works.

We have an attendance system that we access over the web and about 6 weeks ago, the site was redirecting to a random IP which we didn't own and knew of

The rogue IP was showing JSON output {"code":"ResourceNotFound","message":"/ does not exist"} and nothing harmful obvious... my manager has been on the case since. Recently, found this application called Ettercap and used it as an exploit tool and I was able to achieve the same result with trying to redirect a domain to another IP

We believe that the "attack" originated from the inside and sort of used a tool similar to Ettercap... which I now need to counter-measure to avoid future occurrences

We use HP switches (1910s, 2530s) that have ARP anti-attack and Dynamic ARP attack - we don't see them do enough to prevent such attacks as it still happens when we are testing

I am now looking on host-based tools such as arpon which I am working on the setup (not quite sure if I got it right but DNS spoofing still happens) and looking further...

What else should I look into? We don't have an IPS/IDS appliance on the network, we use routers from a Latvian company called Mikrotik and configure them to act as firewalls.

Aruba vs Cisco vs Something Else?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 03:15 PM PDT

So we're in a position where we're about to completely replace our wireless infrastructure from the ground up. Reason being is our Cisco Wireless LAN Controller is soon to be EOS and 90% of the hundreds of APs we have are also about to be EOS.

Rewind a few years ago and we used Cisco everywhere. Now we're getting Juniper for routing and switching and using Palo Alto for firewalls and things couldn't be nicer.

If we were to stick with Cisco I know exactly what model WLC and APs I need. However, since we're replacing everything wireless, it got me thinking about alternatives to Cisco. I've personally only ever used a Cisco WLC but I keep hearing aruba pop up here from time to time and would love to try them out too.

At the end of the day, we just want the best possible solution. We toyed around with the idea of aruba in the past but tossed it aside since we didn't have the budget to re-purchase hundreds of access points. Now things are a little different and the current access points must go.

I guess my question is, is Cisco the "best" in terms of wireless? Is Aruba better? Or do they all do the same thing and is it just preference?

Aside from the EOL/EOS issues with the current system, my complaints are the WLC GUI is a buggy piece of garbage and out of the box visibility is meh at best. Other than that, it seems to do everything we need. In terms of requirements of the new system, Enterprise WPA2 / 802.1X, External captive portal for guest access, local switching ( aka flex connect in Cisco terminology), and of course central management for the hundreds of access points (across hundreds of locations, just 2-4APs per location).

I'm in the process of getting some aruba demo units to test drive and I'm very interested in what the community things based on your own experiences.

    Wireless OOBM Solutions?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 02:52 PM PDT

We currently have zero out of band management anywhere (hundreds of locations/stores/branch offices). In areas where we do have the actual out of band management interface hooked up, it's just hooked back to the in-band management VLAN so it really doesn't help us reach the equipment in the event the in-band network goes out.

I was thinking of using something like Twilio Programmable Wireless to facilitate wireless out of band management access. We're talking $2 a month per connected cellular device and then metered billing for data. The thought is that this cellular network would only be used if the in-band management network goes down and therefore have almost no cellular data cost associated with it. When a site did go down, and the management network was accessed, we're only talking a MB or two for the SSH session to the equipment.

Does anyone have any experience with metered SIMs in OOBM solutions? I was looking at opengear but I've never used one before and may just get one to test out. Connectivity should allow for two devices minimum (1 router and 1 switch) either via the serial console or the ethernet OOBM port. Thoughts?

These locations also have no POTS lines so no modem to dial in with.

Is it just the last mile that makes cable/dsl broadband not suitable for enterprise?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 12:30 PM PDT

We have observed much higher latency loss and jitter on broadband connectivity cable/dsl than we have with DIA Fiber/Ethernet handoff.

Is that just caused by the nature of the last mile? Or is something else at play? For example, how is latency so much higher. We had a circuit that was measuring about 110ms latency that's now 20-30ms on Fiber. How can such a thing be?

    VPN behind ISP modems

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 04:30 AM PDT

I know this may be a stupid question but is it possible to VPN site to site when both firewall is behind the modem provided by the ISP?

What I have is one site has a fiber line (100/20) that has an UBNT USG Pro and the other site has a DSL (10/2.5). I was thinking linking them via a VPN tunnel. My understanding of it is that those firewalls must have a public address on one of their interface. Unfortunately, my ISP modems for both sites face the wan and my firewalls have 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.2.0/ addresses. Behind my firewall, my local network starts at 172.16.x.x/23 on both sites.

My question is, is it possible for VPN when both firewall don't have public facing address? So I have to enable port forwarding?

    Thanks!

[need advice] with router + switch with vlans

    Posted: 30 Sep 2018 06:12 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently bought a switch (SMCGS24C-Smart) which is capable of using vlans. I've configured all vlans and that seems to work just fine now.

The problem I'm having is how to connect the switch to a router. I used to think that I could use a home router and connect it to a trunked port and that the vlans would split up from there on. Now I think I have to get a router which understands vlan's and configure it on the router, than connect to a trunked port on the switch.

Am I missing something? Is it possible to use vlans with a router that doesn't get it? I'm fairly new to using this equipment so I'm figuring out how it all works :)

Sorry for my english, it's not my native language :)

What are the requirements hardware/software and network protocol involve that i need to consider to deploy DMZ? How to configure DMZ?. Is there any documents i can refer? My client company use Barracuda NG Firewall F series.
