    Dell XPS 9380 release date?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:27 AM PDT

I was gonna buy the 9370 this week, but then I realized that I could stick to my old laptop for a few more months and get the 9380 as soon as it's released. Now, when will 9380 be released? Should I just buy the 9370?

Looking for a desktop replacement laptop for study, work and gaming

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:37 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: purchasing laptop in Singapore, Indonesia or Canada (probably Canada for ease in cust. service + price). Willing to spend up to 3k USD
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. N/A
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Needs to be light enough for a daily driver, so something like a 17" thick gaming notebook, while a full desktop replacement, is not going to work for me.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No larger than 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photoshop, Adobe Premier. Will be doing 3D modelling on the rare occasion I have a project with needs a mockup. Also might be doing audio projects.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends, CS:GO Medium-High settings, >60fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm leaning heavily towards a laptop with a dGPU, also tempted to get a touch screen. I will definitely want a good trackpad as well as reliable build quality. Color accuracy out of the box is also a consideration, as I don't want to spend on a color calibration tool just yet.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I did a lot of reading, and I can't decide on a laptop.

I'm a CS major with digital art, gaming and music as hobbies/semi-professional work, so my use case is quite varied. I also intend to purchase a pen tablet to go with the laptop. I do not have nor do I intend to build a desktop PC soon, so the laptop will have to function as my daily/only driver for the next 5+ years. Upgradability isn't a priority but a nice to have.

I shortlisted the following laptops, but am open to other suggestions.

    • Frontrunners:
      • Razer Blade 15 (2018) - I'm concerned about their customer service as well as the quality control.
      • MSI GS65 Stealth Thin (2018) - Concerned about durability and build quality, as well as display color accuracy.
      • Microsoft Surface Book 2 15"- price is the biggest turnoff, also concerned about the fulcrum hinge adding to the bulk in my bag. Biggest pro is that with the Surface pen it negates my need of a separate pen tablet to do art on the go.
    • Others:
      • ASUS Zephyrus GM501 (2018) - Rather bulky and not subtle enough for work. Battery is also an irritating factor.
      • Gigabyte Aero 15X (2018) - Webcam placement irks me a lot. Also bulkier, but still a strong contender.
      • Dell XPS 15 (2018) - reported thermal issues is a no go for me, + their webcam placement. Really like their build quality and overall package however.

Thanks in advance for the help! -\)

    Business Laptop Suggestion (For Parents)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:17 AM PDT

Hi everyone, just trying to decide on a laptop for my parents business.

Budget - $1000-$1600 AUD. In Australia

2 in 1 laptops are definitively an option, but are not at all necessary.

Lightweight and thinness is important, just as long as its not at all bulky.

Windows 10 only (parents cant use any other OS)

Ideally a smaller screen size is preferred, they will be using it when travelling so nothing too big.

My parents will only be using the laptop for their business activities, so just Microsoft office, emails, web browsing, and MYOB, ect. Definitely no gaming/CAD/Photo Editing.

I think they would like a touch screen, and I think screen resolution is quite important to them

I get they could definitely go cheaper for what their using it for, but they want something in that range. Any Suggestions?

Should I pull the trigger on the swift 3?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:24 AM PDT

I need a laptop for university (engineering), the main requirements are a 14"/15" screen, good battery life and decent performance. My budget is around 700-800€, I could spend more but I'd rather not.

I'm considering the swift 3 (650 euros for the model with the i5 and igpu), from what I've read the main drawback is the quality of the screen, also the battery life is not great. Are there any other devices in this price bracket that do better in those aspects?

High build quality and high color gamut screen (~1000 euros EU)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:23 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

Europe ( does not matter which country), ~ 1000 euros.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specs for money, but good battery life is a plus.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I would like it to be lightweight and somewhat thin.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I will use Windows, but if the laptop came pre-installed with linux or no OS it would be better.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Max 15.5 inches. 17 starts being too big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will use Photoshop and some light editing on Premiere and After Effects as well as low-poly renders on Blender.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I am not going to game except some indie 2D/2.5D games, which an intergrated card will be able to handle.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is a MUST. Also I would like the screen to have a very good sRGB / adobeRGB coverage since I will use this laptop for work mostly and I am doing color sensitive work. so an IPS screen with 90% (at least) color gamut coverage is a must.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Building a PC right now due to circumstances is not an option. all in all I want a laptop with great build quality, good specs (a decent i5-i7 8th gen cpu) , at least 8 GB ram (with the option to add even more 8 GB would be ideal), ssd or hdd does not matter ( I can always switch out the HDD) and a good IPS screen with at least 90% color gamut coverage. Also, the option for a thunderbolt port in order to plug it with an external Gpu to play some heavy games is ideal. I want to keep this laptop for as long as possible, I still use Photoshop CS6 and will continue using it since there is no reason to buy newer versions (and there are people in my industry that still use CS3 and are doing more than just fine) so if I could keep this laptop even for 10+ years, it would be awesome.

I have never had a macbook before and I know they're overpriced, although there's two things that all people can agree with, their excellent screen and that they're really really sturdy, should I go down that road?

Currently I'm using a Macbook Air 13" (No, Im no an iSheep, my parents got it for me) and its just... a piece of bread would be more powerful than this. The only good thing is its super thin and has good battery.
I mainly use my laptop for :
Chrome, a lot of chrome (2 windows; ≈ 20 tabs) at any given time, and a lot of youtube
      Some Illustration work on Adobe Illustrator (not too power heavy); Adobe Premiere (its really bad on MB Air); Programming (a little slow on MB Air); If possible, I would like to be able to play some light games on it (Currently the only thing i can run is Goat Simulator on Low graphics...);

Laptop for school that can do some light gaming

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:11 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 USA. If there is absolutely a better purchase that's $100-$200 then i'm open.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No 2 in 1, and a decent battery (4+ hours) would be nice.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important. I want something under 5 lbs and is slim.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" preferred, but I can manage with a 13"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This will mostly be for school, but I'd like to run games like fallout 4, fortnite, and some others like these.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any game I play I would be fine at 60 fps on low

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nice build quality, nothing that feels too cheap, especially with the keyboard and screen.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at laptops with 8th gen i5/i7 so that I have good processors. With my games I would play I think a MX 150 is enough, but if there are any laptops that have a GTX1050 and fit my other specs then that would be awesome. The only other thing that's important is that I want at least 256 gb ssd.

Cheap Laptop for writing Essays, USA; about $100; 13"

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:34 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, preferably under a 100$ but everything until $150 and just over would be ok as well. I'm aware that basically only used and refurb will be an option

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Alright battery life, cheap price

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I already have a Dell, which weighs 5 pounds, so portability is a very big factor

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. MacOs is preferred, everything else is alright, don't really want to do Chrome OS

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 inches, rather smaller than bigger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just planning on doing Word and maybe Powerpoint and Browsing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Got a seperate machine for gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I do want and alright Keyboard/Trackpad and decent Build-Quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I really just want something that I can easily carry around.

So far, I've been looking at an refurbished Macbook from around 2010. Specs should be fine, though I'm worried that RAM won't suffice. Most I'll have open at the same time will be a few tabs and Word.

Looking for digital art and light gaming laptop.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:20 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Hopefully no more than MYR3500 (around $850 USD), Malaysia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money. Battery life isn't top priority since it'll most likely to be plugged in most of the time.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Digital art programs I use : Clip Studio Paint, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator Games : JRPGs like Megadimension Neptunia VII, MMORPGs like Soulworker

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Games I listed above. Usually settle with low, don't care if I get to run them at high/max settings or not.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I will be using a drawing tablet USB (Wacom Intuos) so good input devices, good keyboard, colour accuracy, reliable build quality.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have no knowledge of tech stuff, still learning. Just want a laptop that can handle the workload and last long since my previous laptop (Lenovo Ideapad S410P) had its bottom case near the battery broke so can't open and close the screen well.

I usually draw with a size of 3000 px and above (max 7500 px) with 300 DPI so I want to be able to draw/edit and save smoothly.

    Thanks.

Would this do what I need?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:07 AM PDT

I am looking to buy the cheapest laptop I can for my wife to fill her needs. She doesn't want to spend the money on one but I figure if I can spend as little as possible she might go for it.

The most taxing thing she would want to do is play WoW. Not end game raiding or anything. Mostly questing, pet battles, achievement hunting, collecting. Things like that it doesn't even have to be on high graphics. Ideally running with good fps at medium would be cool but smooth fps on low would be acceptable. My knowledge of pc specs is very basic so I throw this out to you guys. Would this laptop do what I want?

Can the ASUS ROG Zephyrus do 4k 60fps gaming?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:15 PM PDT

On an external moniter as it has a 1080p screen.

The Zephyrus is literally the only laptop that has a GTX 1080 and doesn't weigh 10 pounds. Somehow in fact, it weighs half as much at 5 pounds.

A GTX 1080 is needed for 4k gaming. So technically it should work right?

But then I read some (half-toxic) comments saying it is a Max-Q GTX 1080 which means it's like half as good as a normal GTX 1080 and 4k would be impossible at a decent fps.

    Is this true?

Budget Laptop for College and Light Gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touch pad)?: Reliable build quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: Since I will be leaving for college next year, I've been looking to ditch my current 17" laptop (because of portability issues). The laptop will be used to take notes for classes and for gaming (League of Legends which doesn't require much graphical power). Build quality is the most important to me. An MX series graphics card would suffice but at least an i5-8400H or a Quad-Core with Hyper-threading CPU is a must. In terms of aesthetics, I'm looking for something that doesn't have any gamer aesthetic (stereotypical red accents and crazy designs).

[USA] [$400-600] [13"+] A 2-in-1 laptop that actually feels great to use?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:11 PM PDT

I'm a full-time college student looking for a budget 2-in-1 laptop for daily use. Here are things that I couldn't care less about:

    • Super powerful (Not looking to game on it nor need it for anything beyond typing/web browsing/watching youtube)
    • Webcam
    • Fingerprint reader/face scanner
    • 4K/ultra HD display
    • Being light/thin (I don't mind bulky laptops)
    • Tons of battery life (Will be near outlets pretty much all the time)

Things that I do care about:

    • A great keyboard (Can't stand laptop keyboards that feel mushy)
    • A great trackpad (Large surface area and clicky buttons)
    • Great build quality (Something that won't fall apart easily and isn't known for having severe hardware issues like overheating)
    • Touchscreen that works well for nearly lag-free use with stylus

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

      • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Definitely want great specs and battery life if possible.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter too much if under 5lbs. Thinness is preferred

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch preferably without numpad, can do 14in.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Going to be mostly word processing and programming, would like to be able to play games as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60fps at any quality. Mostly want to play Overwatch, Rocket League, Sea of Thieves, emulators, and indie titles.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Definitely want a great keyboard. Nothing else matters that much to me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So right now I'm looking at two laptops. My first choice would be the Legion Y530, since it looks quite nice and has most of everything that I want, including that 144hz panel and a pretty decent graphics card. The problem is that the battery life isn't that great, it's kind of heavy, and a little thicker than I'd like. It's also the maximum I'm willing to spend, $1200.

By contrast, there's the IdeaPad 330 15, with slightly better battery life and lower weight, with an 8300H and a 1050 2GB for $650. I like the look a lot worse than the Y530, but I'm trying to figure out if it's worth spending half as much for something that can do what I want it to but not as great. There's also the benefit that I can get it shipped faster vs having to wait significantly longer for a custom Y530.

Change to SDD (Dell Inspiron 14-5447) or buy new laptop (Acer Nitro 5) for gaming and college work

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:29 PM PDT

    Dell Inspiron 14-5447

    • 8 GB Ram
    • Intel(R) Core i7-4510 CPU
    • 2.4 GHz
    • AMD Radeon R7 M265
    • 1TB HDD (I don't really know how to check for this, I just add drive D (732 GB) and drive C (189GB) together)

I am a laptop noob, and my dell starts to get slow after 4 years (for gaming like dota 2, I can't even play on super low settings). I tried running antivirus, ccleaner, disk cleanup, disk fragmenter, freeing up disk space, cleaning the fans, going to other places for the wifi and up to date drivers but it's still slow. Is there other ways I can try to help with the fps? (other than restoring, since this have been happening for over a year now.)

It also has a battery problem, I can't let it open for more than 30 minutes without charging, so if I should go for the 1 TB SDD, might as well go for the battery as well.

I am planning to buy these in the upcoming black friday. Do you guys think I should go for Acer Nitro 5 in a long term and cost? If you guys have suggestions for better gaming variants than Acer Nitro 5, then I'll be happy to look it up (< £700 and no RGB lights).

Looking for a High Performance Dedicated Gaming Laptop (A$2,500+ / Australia)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:24 PM PDT

    Hi there Reddit!

I'm looking for a high performance dedicated gaming laptop which can play all current gen games in high / ultra quality at 1920 x 1200 and also provide a level of future proofing if possible. I am moving overseas and would prefer to take a laptop with me, as opposed to bringing a tower or constructing one at the destination. Please also let me know your thoughts on the 1060 / 1070 / 1080 machines.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: A flexible A$2,500+ target price range, willing to pay more if there's incremental value to be had. Country of purchase would be in Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money is the most important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important - max specs for money takes precedence over portability. Since I expect this to be plugged in 95% of the time, weight and thinness will only be a secondary consideration.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17.3" is first preference, but open to 15.6" as well. Screen quality must also be top notch.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No work - this is expected be 100% dedicated gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Smooth / 60fps for the following games at Ultra / High at 1920 x 1200 would be good:
    1. Witcher 3
    2. Total War : Warhammer 2 and the new Total War
    3. Doom
    4. Vermintide 2
    5. Space Hulk: Deathwing

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The following would be important to me:
    1. High quality display with respect to colour / brightness / contrast
    2. SSD drive (preferably 128GB / 256GB or larger)
    3. High speed wifi
    4. No overheating / crashing issues

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Based upon my initial research the following laptops seems like a good fit - let me know what you guys think!
    1. MSI GS65 - 5.6" FHD 144Hz, i7-8750H (Coffee Lake), GTX 1060, 16GB 2666MHz RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD - (A$2,799)
    2. Acer Predator 17 - i7-7700HQ , GTX 1070, 32GB 2400MHz DDR4 SODIMM SDRAM - 256GB M.2 SATA SSD (A$2,499)
    3. MSI Titan GT75VR-7RE 17.3" - i7-7700HQ , GTX1070, 16GB DDR4-2400 RAM - 128GB M.2 SSD - 1TB 7200RPM 2.5" SATA HDD (A$2,799)

Looking for a cheap student laptop around 300 CAD

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:06 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is roughly 300 CAD, and in/around Vancouver, Canada respectively.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want a good battery life, best specs possible and would be open to any other features such as a 2 in 1 but it isn't required.

How important is weight and thinness to you?*

Weight and thinness is not a problem so long as it is within reason, it doesn't have to be especially thin or light. So basically average to a bit over average is ok.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I would prefer Windows but I am pretty much just as open to Chrome OS provided I could access android/ Linux apps.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might be doing some light scale photo editing so like Photoshop, Canva, etc.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would strongly enjoy a good keyboard and a device that is built well, a touch screen is a nice extra but definitely not necessary.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My old PC was a dell optiplex 740 running windows Vista, an AMD Athlon, 4GB of ram and some very modest specs so almost anything is an upgrade nowadays. I have also extensively used my relatives Chromebooks. Essentially I would like a laptop to be able to come around with me to take notes, design posters and do homework, I also usually keep a lot of tabs open ( 10 to 20) which can boggle down some Chromebooks as services like Gmail and Facebook like to hog the resources. Thanks for all your help and I would appreciate links to give me some specific ideas.

Affordable laptop for programming + engineering simulations

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:58 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $500 Brazil but I would like suggestions on cheaper and more expensive price ranges as well.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be great.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness are not important.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, I'm an engineering student so I would run some Solidworks (CAD), Matlab (simulations), electronics simulators, some ROS for robotics, stuff like that. I don't need this softwares to run ultra smoothly on any condition, but I do want then not to be laggy or glitchy due to bad GPU.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm buying a laptop to use at the university mainly, and do some stuff related to that at home. Sure some light gaming would be nice, but with the GPU I need for the simulations I'll already be able to do this level of gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and good screen for programming would be really nice. Reliable build quality is obviously always nice as well, but if I had to choose between this and a good keyboard + screen, I would choose the second.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The thing is that I would really love to be able to get a GTX 1060 laptop with intel i7 8th generation, SSD, etc, but these laptops are way too expensive where I live (a laptop that costs $2500 in the US costs around $5000 here if I convert it back to dollars), so I need to get something that would be considered "budget" in the US for it to have a "fair" price here. Since I'll be programming I need it to be focused on having the best possible keyboard, screen and CPU, but I also need a mid-range sort of GPU to run engineering software on some level.
