This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    I failed my first build

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 07:24 PM PDT

I finished building my first pc ever and I didn't end up working at all I researched it for months and all I got was a light shining in the gpu. I feel so discouraged and I took it to a computer shop which ended being a shitty place and told me they don't deal with custom pc builds. I really don't know what to do anymore.

Edit *IT STARTED WORKING IM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW, it was the I/O connectors that were placed wrong THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE THIS MADE MY DAY. *

My PC has 16GB of ram consisting of 2 x 4GB dual channel ram modules and 1 x 8GB single channel ram module. Should I upgrade my 8GB one from single channel to dual channel for gaming?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 01:49 AM PDT

So my computer has 16GB of ram which is still ample enough for gaming in 2018, but not all of my ram on board is running in dual channel mode. The ram I bought was a 8gb ram kit consisting of 2 x 4gb ram sticks meant to operate together and a single 8gb ram stick leftover from my previous PC. My motherboard has 4 ram slots with one now left empty with only 3 ram slots filled. I am seriously considering replacing that 8gb ram module with another 2 x 4gb ram kit to fully operate all of my ram in dual channel mode. How much of a gaming performance gain would I have by having the remaining 8gb of my ram operating in dual channel mode? Games I play include Battlefield 1, GTA V, Overwatch, Fortnite & Rainbow Six Siege. Other specs on my PC includes an i7-4970 and GTX 970.

Did Amazon Ship Me an Open-Box Motherboard?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 01:09 PM PDT

lol... I know I sound paranoid, but this is my very first PC build and I've spent $3500 on everything, so I want to make sure it's all ok.

When unboxing the components for my build this weekend, I noticed that every box has a piece of factory tape sealing it, or the entire box is wrapped in plastic.

Except for the motherboard box. There is no factory tape and the box is not wrapped in plastic. There is no sign that any tape was cut or peeled off. There is no instruction manual in the box, just the motherboard underneath a plastic shield. The box itself appears to be fine, and the motherboard appears fine (to my untrained eyes, anyway). it's just that when I removed the box I was able to open it. It practically opened itself when I lifted it by the sides.

For reference, I ordered the ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075RJ944T

Here are images of my box and the motherboard: https://imgur.com/a/sI1MA5q

For anyone who has bought this same motherboard, or other Asus motherboards from Amazon, is this just how they are packaged?

Finished up my girlfriend's first gaming PC!

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 05:44 AM PDT

Hi guys, I think this is my first time posting a new build here. I've been building gaming PCs since 1999/2000. My girlfriend had been playing on an older Acer laptop for a while, and I was watching it struggle with FFXIV lately. With the tariffs on PC components about to kick in, and her birthday coming up, I put together an early present for her last night. I built the PC, she picked up the monitor to go with it. Treat yo'self.

This is my first AMD build since 2006. So far, very pleased with the Ryzen 7. No issues on the build or install side other than it doesn't want to go >2933MHz on the RAM on Auto BIOS settings. Will play around it with later.

Pictures (warning, cable management porn) https://imgur.com/a/aja3Txl

    Any questions let me know!

    Corsair rma ram question

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:53 PM PDT

So I've have run a system with an i5-4690k 16 GB ram over 4 dims at 2400 mhz. Last week I lost one of my 4gb Corsair sticks, and sent it to Corsair for rma with its the other 4gb stick in the 8gb set. They do not have stock of the same set and have offered me 16gb at 1600mhz or 8gb at 3000 MHz and I don't know which I should go for. I mainly use my system for web development and occasional gaming. Any suggestions welcome.

I'm going to college next year and need some advice about my desktop

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:38 PM PDT

    Hi there!

Last fall (my junior year), I built my pc. It's a Ryzen 1700 with a gtx 1080. I mostly built using these specs because I create a lot of fractal art--which benefits heavily from increase core count--, programming--with a few benefits--, and photoshop--which unfortunately doesn't benefit that much. However, those items can be summed under the ryzen decisions. The GTX 1080, of course, is to play some great games.

Next year, however, I'm going to go to college, and I'm trying to plan how to best utilize my specs I have now. First off, I think my college choice will be both out of state and in one of the coasts. I currently live in the Midwest, so that means that I'll be transporting the computer repeatedly. This seems kind of scary to me. To transport a desktop at least twice a year and possibly more often makes me think that it's likely to break. Which gets me into this post. Do you have any ideas on what I should do?

I would like to note that I have a pretty old laptop right now that might work as a secondary driver in college if I have my desktop but will need an upgrade if it becomes my daily driver again. It simply can't handle the workload in programming and art I do anymore.

Given this situation, I feel like I can see a couple of options.

    1) Move the desktop every year

    2) Buy a new laptop that is eGPU compatible, so I can get the best of the GPU. If I do this option, I can also set up my home system as remote desktop to run items offsite if I feel like it.

    3) Build another small desktop using lesser specs at college to use that I can transport and not worry about as much.

Please give me any advice you have.

    Thanks!

Microstutter when loading new textures/areas after upgrading to 1080 Ti

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 08:08 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

    Hello,

I have been having bizarre issues with microstutter when loading new textures and areas in games ever since I upgraded from a 980 Ti to an EVGA SC Black Edition 1080 Ti. However, the card does not stutter outside of instances when it is loading new areas, and performs like a dream when nothing new is being loaded... so though the only variable which has changed is my GPU, I'm not actually certain this is a GPU issue (maybe a VRAM issue with streaming new textures?).

    My specs are as follows:

    GTX 1080 Ti

    Intel i7 6700k

    16 GB DDR4 ram

    256 GB SSD

    600 Watt PSU

    Asus z170k motherboard

    Solutions I have tried:

-Checking benchmark performance for every component on my computer (everything is what you'd expect for a rig like this)

-Defragging drives (not surprised this didn't work, as the issue would have existed on my 980 Ti as well if it were a drive issue)

    -Factory resetting my computer

-Uninstalling performance monitors such as the proprietary EVGA one and afterburner

-Trying computer with and without current Nvidia drivers

-Enabling highest performance settings for all my components

-checking PSU for any issues with power output (wattage rarely exceeds 350, and when it does it's only by a little bit)

And that's about it. I am so baffled as to what this issue could be... should I just RMA the card? Like I said, I am somewhat skeptical this is an issue with the card due to the intermittence of the stutters (happens only during that very specific circumstance when loading something new). However, my experience when dealing with this sort of thing is quite limited, so I'm sure you'd all have better ideas than me. Thanks so much everyone!

Edit: and just to give an example of what my problem is like: I'll be running through a field in PUBG, and every 10 seconds or so get a microstutter as I see it loading the bushes ahead of me in... or I'll be playing a level in Battlefield 1, and zooming in with my binoculars on some objects that aren't fully rendered will cause stutter as they rapidly load in. The stutter is extremely brief (measure in milliseconds, definitely) but can get quite grating :( and sometimes throws of my aim in games.

Would I need to reinstall windows if I upgrade my processor (i5 8600k to i9 9900k (when they come out))

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 11:47 AM PDT

A program called Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation is hogging CPU usage and I cant find a fix.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 04:43 PM PDT

As the title says, that program is constantly using high percentages of my cpu giving me a hard time running my games, I've done virus scans and I've tried updating and reinstalling drivers but no help. If anyone of you can assist me, thanks.

    Which GTX 1080

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 04:14 PM PDT

My friend let me borrow an EVGA GTX 570 for my first build while the GPU prices were so high. I think I'm going to pull the trigger soon on a GTX 1080 and I have a few questions... (I'm pretty new to this, as I came from an XBOX One recently. Please excuse my ignorance).

    1. Is the 1080 Ti actually worth the extra cost? If so, under what circumstances?
    2. What brand do you recommend? I was once told that ASUS was probably the best. There's definitely a bit of a price difference. What are the differences between the different brands? Just thermals? Is my understanding correct that NVidia reference cards have inferior thermals?
    3. Should I buy now or wait a little longer for prices to go down?

I mostly play overwatch right now, but occasionally play PUBG as well. Thanks in advance for your help!

How exactly does the cpu affect the FPS at 1080p vs 1440p ?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 05:32 AM PDT

I currently have a 4690k with a 970 and i have just ordered a 1080ti as i found a good deal on it and I was planning on upgrading to 1440p/144hz anyway however im a massive FPS whore and id like to know how exactly my CPU and cpus in general will effect my FPS in the future based on the resolution ? Meaning if i wanted to main 100+ fps in every game with a relevant g-sync monitor with a high refresh rate would it be suggested to stay at 1080p ? How will this effect higher CPU games ? Will the FPS be the same at 1080p and 1440p because it is limited to the CPU ?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

As soon as I turn on any games, I've noticed my CPU % spike up for just a second, which turns on my CPU cooler to maximum despite temperatures being in the 30's. The fan becomes very loud and even after closing any videogames, does not quiet down. I don't think the issue has anything to do with dust because I literally built this computer two days ago.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

The only thing that quiets down the fan is to make the PC sleep or shut it down. I haven't tried anything else yet.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

This with a discount code of 15 perfect comes to $93, is this a good deal? I haven't followed gpu prices for a while so I wouldn't know.

I put together this list of parts for my new PC, and I wanted to make sure they weren't complete trash, or there isn't some better option or anything like that. (My original budget was $1350, this is to be used for 1080p gaming.) Anything you notice wrong or any changes I could make would be nice to know.
