    Simple Questions - September 26, 2018

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Okay I lied there's tonnes of RGB but I took the photos with the system off. It definitely looks better without all the colour madness that it gets set to for shows.

As you can see, this case used to be a 1000D, it's now very much more than that. I was asked by them to construct a fully watercooled, dual system rig to be exhibited at shows such as iSeries, EGX, CES, Dreamhack and Computex, so this was the route I took.

    Some notes about the build:

    • 23KG of Aluminium and 20KG of acrylic went into the construction of this PC

    • Over 150 machining hours spent making all the custom pieces

    • Features 6 watercooling distribution plates that route the fluid from the three loops around the chassis to the components

    • Full custom cabling made from scratch, 70m of custom wiring was used.

    • The main structure of the original case was replaced with 5mm CNC-cut aluminium panels, these intersect with the various distro plates to create a very sturdy structure.

    • All in, the build weighs ~70kg

    • Yes of course it's already out of date...

Reminder: Replace your thermal compound if you're noticing higher temps than usual.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 07:51 AM PDT

Pulled an i7-4790k from a friend's system and he got a replacement.

The thermal compound on it was toast after 4 years. This was a stock 4790k with a beefy heatsink, the thermal paste though was crusted and dry. I had to scrape some of it off with a plastic sheet because my arcticlean wasn't able to get it all off.

In the new system after a thorough clean, idle temps are 60 degrees lower than they were before. Yes, 60 celsius lower, that isn't a typo.

Tl;dr Thermal compound isn't perfect, although uncommon it can dry up. If your CPU has been hotter lately, check your paste.

Salvaged gaming PC build for my 9 year old. i7-3820 with a GTX 970.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 09:16 AM PDT

Had a great time this weekend with my oldest son and a good friend. We bought an older PC online without a graphics card, stripped it down, cleaned it up, and rebuilt it. My son is very excited to have his first gaming pc. I am very excited to have someone to game with in the house. I am not sure a PC picker breakdown would be appropriate as some of the parts are aging but the list is as follows with some photos via Imgur. All in, including drinks and supper, I am out about 600 CAD for the entire build.

    https://imgur.com/a/BbDujef

    i7-3820 processor

    Asus P9X79 Mobo

    16gb Kingston 1333hz DDR3 ram

EVGA GTX 970 GPU (this is my old GPU, replaced it with a 1070).

    Cougar MX330 Case

    In-Win 500w Power Supply

    Seagate 7200 rpm 3tb HD

    WD Blue 1TB HD

    Samsung 27" 1080 monitor

    Random Dell keyboard and Mouse

We had a blast, my son got to build his first computer, spent some time with a good friend, didn't have to spend a fortune.

When to buy next GPU for 1440p, 144hz

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:43 PM PDT

So I'm trying to figure out when it would be best to buy a new GPU. I currently have a 980 that's several years old and is beginning to be out of date, especially for 1440p, 144hz gaming. Would it be best to wait after Christmas and get a 1080ti, 2080, or wait until the next generation of AMD cards come out? Also if I had the option, would the 2080ti be a better choice than SLI 1080ti?

    Hi,

I was wondering if you can re-postition the fan controller, i have a couple of noctua fans in my current case and the cables are quite short.

I did see a row of holes on the left side from top to bottom, can you put the fan controller there?

Did I waste money on an SLI mobo?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:14 PM PDT

I went to fry's and asked the guy what to do for a first computer and he gave me a part list, which admittedly I should've run here first, and one of the things on it was a Z370 Sli Plus Mobo. Now this was 2 months ago and it's too late to do anything about it. But I made it quite clear that I was only using one graphics card at the most. Did I waste my money?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I've been trying to reinstall windows on my rig that I've had for a while, but it keeps freezing every time it loads.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • I've disabled any overclocks completely.

    • Switched out RAM sticks and tried them in different configurations.

    • Tried different hard drives to install Windows from.

    • Reset the CMOS a few times.

    • I've disabled and re-enabled CMS compatability.

    • Ensured my SATA is set to AHCI.

    • Swapped GPUs. (GTX 980 for a 1070Ti and vice versa.)

    • I've replaced the power supply and redid my cabling.

    • I've replaced the motherboard.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Here is a video I recorded of the issue. I'm sorry about the vertical video, but I DID film it horizontally.

    https://youtu.be/uiXK2nwVtVs

I've been struggling with this issue for a while. It continuously happens no matter what I do. I don't know what the problem could be, so I'm reaching out for help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is there a PSU that has a 6 pin GPU connector that will fit in a Dell Inspiron 3650?

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This is a build that I'll use mainly for gaming but also for the other activities described above. I choose mITX because I don't have too much desk space and I would like it to be small so it's easier to move.

I am looking to build this sometime next week and buying most of the components through newegg eBay tomorrow with the 15% off.

    I do have some questions:

    1) How does my build look?

    2) How hard is it for a beginner to build a mITX build?

    3) Does having a full size PSU in this case affect the GPU that much, I have heard that the temps are better with a SFX PSU but is it really that much of a difference?

    4) Is it worth it to pay the premium for the ASUS Rog Strix B450-I board over the other boards like the MSI gaming? I have heard that ASUS have a better bios; since it's my first time building I am not sure if the bios would make the process easier or harder? Are there any other components that the ASUS are better than other (besides RGB, which I am not keen on)? I don't mind spending the difference but I am not the if the extra money is worth it

I am also looking for build quality of the parts, if there are any big quality issues with my parts or if there are some parts with better quality and small price increases please let me know

    Thanks for the input!

Took back Gaming Laptop, looking to build my first rig.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:12 PM PDT

I just got back from returning an ASUS GL502VSK after having some HIGH temps while gaming. I went on to read that there's a class action lawsuit against Asus regarding this exact model in the federal courts.. so I got out while I could.

It was a great laptop, nice 120hz screen and a 1070gtx but I didn't like the fact that if anything goes wrong internally I'm basically S.O.L .

This is my first PC build and want to get some opinions from more knowledgeable folk.

Looking for advice for gaming build!

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:54 PM PDT

I'm looking to build a gaming PC for 1440p 120hz that should be good enough for the next 3-5 years. This would be my first PC that I will build. I mostly play RPGs, but may indulge with the occasional FPS.

Can you advise me if the build looks solid, and most important, compatible? Are there any changes that would make sense? (I don't have a fixed budget, but I'd rather not spend more unless it would really make a difference)

I know I could shave ~150 pounds by getting a cheaper cpu cooler and case, but I prefer them for their looks. I'm also quite set to go with a 21:9 1440p 100Hz+ monitor.

    Thanks!

I'm looking to stream mostly Overwatch & LOL mostly at 1080p. I'm trying to see if there's anybody shares the same rig or if there's any improvement I could do to my current rig.

    PC upgrade?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:46 PM PDT

i have this pretty crappy pc that my mom got from work when they upgraded and she gave it to me. Obviously nothing gaming level, but still not bad. I want to know what I should upgrade first.

    Specs:

    Intel i5 3570 @ 3.4 GHz, Quad core

    Dell motherboard (???)

    2x 4GB Samsung Irx8p PC3 RAM sticks

    Intel 480GB SSD

    AMD Radeon HD 7000 series

I want to be able to upgrade something easy, like ram or gpu. (I don't want to break anything) I have about $50 to spend, but if I need more I can spend more. Is it better to buy / build a new pc? I have a friend who will buy this pc as is for $200.

My pc gets around 30 frames in fortnite at low settings with 50% resolution. (I'm running at 1920 by 1080) I want to be able to increase that. This pc is itself 6 years old, so the part may just be getting old.

I can overclock the GPU to 875 core and 1000 memory comfortably. ( if that helps )

Overall, I just want a recommendation for a part to buy to upgrade my PC.

    Thanks

    Should I upgrade to a 980ti?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:01 AM PDT

Right now, I'm using the 1050 ti and I'm looking into 144hz gaming. I'm on a relatively tight budget and I've seen numerous 980 ti deals for <$200.

Should I spend the extra hundred fifty on a 1070/ti or just go with the 980ti?

I’ve never built a PC before, can you please help me with the parts I’ve chosen?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:44 PM PDT

    Hi.

So I am planning on building my own PC in a few months (need to save up) and I am currently in the process of choosing the parts.

Here is what I've chosen so far:

    CPU- Intel Pentium G4560

    Motherboard- MSI H110M PRO-VH PLUS

    RAM- Crucial 4GB 2400MHz DDR4

    PSU- EVGA W1 500

Storage- WD Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hard Drive

Chassis- Cooler Master MasterBox lite 3.1 MicroATX

    PC Part Picker link

I decided not to get a graphics card now to save some cash. And I'm not really building this PC for gaming primarily, although I might in the future so I kept that in mind when choosing the CPU.

I have a few questions about this build though:

    1. Will this be good enough to have a smooth experience with basic day-to-day usage? (programs opening fast enough, little to no thrashing)

    2. I am unsure on whether or not I should get 8GB of RAM. Should I? Or just opt with 4GB now and upgrade when I buy a GPU?

    3. Is there any way to counter that slight incompatibility issue with the CPU and the motherboard? (Open the link to see what I'm referring to)

    4. Is that PSU an overkill for the build I have? I have a feeling that it could be

    5. I know this could be a dumb question, but how do I know that the PSU fits within the chassis? The website says they're compatible but I kind of wanna know for sure. Or should I not worry about this?

    6. Should the size of the integrated CPU cooler be taken in consideration?

    7. I've been seeing a lot of praise for SSDs, should I get one? They are quite expensive, and kind of exceed my budget.

    8. USB Wifi adapter or a motherboard one?

    Thank you.

    Upgrading CPU

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:38 PM PDT

I am planning to upgrade from my i5 8600k to the new i7 9900k when it releases. My Mobo is compatible with the new gen I've already checked. Is it as simple as swapping out the hardware or do I need to do anything with drivers, bios etc.

    Looking to upgrade graphics card

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:38 PM PDT

I am currently using a 1060 6GB card with an intel 8700k(recent upgrade; old cpu went to shit). Also looking to buy a 1440p 144hz screen and already have a 4k 60hz one that i mainly use for productivity at the moment. I am looking to play esport and tripple A titles so I feel like anything other than a 1080ti is not powerfull enough, am I correct about that? Also another problem: My current PSU only has 500W, if I get a 1080ti I feel like I need to upgrade that as well. Thanks for any help in advance.

EDIT: I have a be quiet Pure Power 10 as my PSU

Is my Ryzen running abnormally hot?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:29 PM PDT

So not too long ago I finished my build. Or so I thought. Airflow in the case sucked (pun intended) and was causing my Ryzen 5 2600X to hit around 85C under load. Nobody needs to tell me that's too hot.

A couple days ago I ordered 3 Noctua fans from Amazon to mount in the case. This particular case has a spot for a radiator on top, so I fitted 2 where the radiator would go and 1 on the back. That completely fills every area where a fan can be mounted. Temps are down to 24C idle and 78C max under load according to MSI Afterburner. With a normal Handbrake load, it hovers around 76C. Clock speed peaks around 3.92 Ghz cold and 3.82 hot, leaving it at the stock clock settings. The front of the case feels pretty darn cold where the air is coming in, so I know those fans are doing their thing. Ambient temp outside the case is about 62F, because I have my window open.

This still seems around 10 degrees too hot from what I've seen with CPUs in general, but this has me questioning if it's a Ryzen thing to be this hot. I don't think I should be fighting this hard to keep it under 80C. I'm using the stock Wraith Spire cooler that came with the CPU. All the fans are running 100%.

I've thought about putting this chip underwater on more than one occasion, but from what I've seen water just seems to delay the speed that it reaches the same temp it would if it was on air. What do you guys think?

Need some input and help on my new build.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:26 PM PDT

Hello all, I'd appreciate if somebody could take a look and let me know if there are any issues with this build. I'm mostly worried about whether the CPU Cooler and GPU will fit into the case and whether my PSU and motherboard are good enough? I don't know much about them so I just picked random ones hoping they will fit fine. Thank you.
