    Simple Questions - September 01, 2018

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

[Build Complete] First time building PC, first time going SFF

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:19 AM PDT

I have been lurking this sub and r/sffpc for quite a while to get inspired on how to properly choose PC parts and how to put them together. I don't know why, but SFF has a kind of unique appeal to it, but anyhow I decided to go with SFF also because of my line of work, which requires me to travel around quite often.

The pricing in the PCPP list below could be higher than in US, but that's because I purchased all of the parts from local retailers in the low countries. I had a budget of €900 with 32GB RAM as the primary requirement for certain software that I will be using, so yeah, the RAM is almost a third of the budget instead of the GPU.

The build may not be aligned with popular opinions of reddit, but here are my reasons:

    1. Ryzen 2600 over the X-variant since 2600X costs €215 at the time of purchase. I am using the included Wraith Stealth as I don't plan to overclock.
    2. MSI B450I instead of Asrock B450 because the former was €10 cheaper and the BIOS seems to be more intuitive to use, although I expect MSI could have done better in the audio department.
    3. The LPX is the cheapest 32 GB DDR4 3000MHz on the motherboard QVL (A-XMP runs perfectly at 2933). Going with 32 instead of 16 because I need it for physics simulations and video rendering stuffs.
    4. 250GB SSD instead of 500GB/1TB ones because I'm cheap but I put everything aside from the OS on the HDD.
    5. SG13B as my case of choice because it seems to be the cheapest and smallest case that still fits full-length GPU, ATX PSU, and 3.5" HDD.
    6. Corsair SF450 for the PSU because it is a high-tier PSU with Gold rating and I would probably never use anything more powerful than a RTX 2070. I might have waited for the newer platinum-rated version, but those are up to pre-order for €115 so nope. I am using the PP08 adapter to fit the PSU into the case.
    7. I am using a used R7-360 as a stop-gap GPU until the release of the next gen GTX 2060, just because it was dirt cheap.
    8. Noctua NF-A12 fan because of the word of mouth in reddit, but I do admit, the fan is superb. I mounted the fan as an exhaust though instead of intake because I'm more worried about hot air stagnating inside the case due to lack of opening at the back. Instead, I dust-filtered the mesh on the sides of the case using DUSTEND sticker and remove the dust filter at the front.
    9. Logitech G Pro mouse because it is affordable and looks nice (it's the only RGB part in my build). For now, I can't afford a mechanical keyboard, but the DELL ergonomic keyboard is quite compact to carry around.

I completed the build in roughly 7 hours, among which, figuring out how to route the SATA power cable from the PSU to both the 3.5" HDD and the SSD. But fortunately, nothing went wrong, and the build POST on first try.

Link to the complete build log in Youtube (warning - long video ahead). My building skill may not be on par against other PC building veterans, but everyone have to start somewhere right? Please let me know on stuffs that I may have done incorrectly or something that could have been done better.

Feel free to ask me on anything related to the build.

I'm assuming an 8 core, 8 thread processor is the sweet spot for gaming?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:03 PM PDT

This is probably an extremely dumb question, but I was comparing benchmarks between i5s and i7s, and it seems like the Hyper-Threading in the i7s can hugely improve frame rates. Using the 7600K, 7700K, 8600K, and 8700K in this comparison, I've observed the following with benchmarks...

    • The 7700K surpasses the 7600K. (The 7700K has twice as many threads.)
    • The 8600K surpasses the 7600K. (The 8600K has two more physical cores than the 7600K.)
    • The 7700K surpasses the 8600K in some, but are usually on par. (The 7700K has two more threads than the 8600K, but the 8600K has two more physical cores.
    • The 8700K surpasses the 8600K. (The 8700K has twice as many threads.)
    • The 8700K surpasses the 7700K in some games, but are usually on par. (The 8700K has two more cores than the 7700K, with HT.)

From these, I feel like I've observed the following...

    • Where Hyper-Threading gives an advantage, having more cores seems to either be the same, or be superior to Hyper-Threading.
    • Once you reach eight threads, performance seems to cap out.

I've read somewhere that not many games utilize more than eight threads, which seems to be the case, as i7s used to have a maximum of eight threads and four cores for a while, from my research. Hence, probably why I've seen people say "if you're gaming only, the 8700K wouldn't be worth upgrading from a 7700K".

If this seems to be the case, then I feel the upcoming 9700K would be the best processor out there in terms of gaming performance. There's eight cores and eight threads, which means no Hyper-Threading. As a bonus note, the majority of current consoles out there use processors with eight cores and eight threads, but that's probably not really pointing to anything specific, just that they use them.

Assuming this is the case, would investing in a (rumored) $350 9700K this October be the best possible processor investment I could make if I wanted to focus on raw gaming performance? (For reference, I do not have an i5, i7, or Ryzen processor. Specifically, I currently have a Pentium G4560, and need to upgrade it anyway.)

    My first self-made computer !

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:33 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I want to build my first pc gamer, I always played on laptops since I was a student, but it's over now. I want to upgrade to a real pc gamer since I will have the ability to get one for myself.

I did some research and I want you to give me an advice, I read a lot of post already and I'm afraid to buy some parts that aren't working together or improve my build.

I'm for France btw. And my budget is up to 1800€.

Concerning the computer, I'm flexible on anything except I really want the cpu i7-8700 or 8700K (not going to overclock anything) and a geforxe ftx 1080 (or 1080ti). I put on a water cooler, but I have concern about those, I might take a normal one.

Canadians who live close to the border, is it cheaper to buy hardware in the US?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:48 AM PDT

I've heard hardware is a lot more expensive in Canada due to tariffs and taxes.

Could those who live close to the US hop the border and make their purchases in the US? Would they have to pay any import taxes while bringing back the hardware they bought?

PC will work with 8GB of RAM but won't with 16.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:51 PM PDT

To begin here is my list of parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4PnPgw

So I was having trouble getting the computer to boot up with both ram sticks in slots A2 and B2, assuming from left to right its A1, A2, B1, B2. I believe its called Dual Channel mode. It would cycle on and off and would not display anything to my monitor, so I decided to use one stick of RAM is slot B2 which is what the manual said to do if you have one stick of RAM. It boots up and I install windows and test a few games and everything is fine. I swap the sticks of RAM to see if I had a faulty one, it works fine. So I know that both RAM sticks are in working condition but cannot figure out why it will not boot with 16GB of RAM but will with 8, I'm not sure if I'm missing anything here. The speed is DDR4-3000 on the RAM and the motherboard calls for 2666 which assuming it would clock to the speed it needs. I don't know why it's not booting with both RAM sticks in, any help or suggestions would be wonderful! Heres a link to pictures of the computer too: https://imgur.com/a/uDtt0v5

Upragding PC for Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Streaming and Gaming. Halp.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:48 PM PDT

So I'm looking to upgrade my PC that I built a little over 3 years ago. I'm an novice graphic designer so I use Illustrator every single day. I'm going to start learning Photoshop as well, which I know can be very taxing on your graphics card.

In my free time I also play lots of games on my PC. Anything you can think of: Battlefields, Monster Hunter World, PUBG, DiRT Series, WoW, Diablo, CS:GO.... you name it. I used to stream a little bit back in the day and I really enjoyed it, but my computer couldn't seem to handle some of the more graphically intense games, as well as my internet. I'm going to be moving into an apartment that has fiber, so the internet won't be a problem.

So my question is, what should I upgrade from what I have currently? I'm thinking CPU, MB, and RAM, but what do you guys think? I'd like to stream at a fairly high quality without having any performance issues.

    Cooling Pad for Desktop Computer?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:52 PM PDT

Hi all. I posted this question a while back and didn't really get any good answers. I use a software called CAM that warns me everytime the CPU goes over 80 degrees. In standard use it happens rarely (Chrome + Firefox + Photoshop + Itunes running). However when gaming it happens after about 20 minutes and continuously every few minutes after. This has me worried.

So, I'm wondering if I bought a better laptop cooling pad if that could help cool it down? I know a laptop is a horizontal device, a cooling pad is also horizontal, and my tower is vertical. But if it blows air from underneath than it might help cool down the unit?

It is a ASUS ROG GR8 II-T043Z model that looks like this:

    https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Mini-PCs/ROG-GR8-II/

    https://static.techspot.com/articles-info/1387/images/S-1.jpg

ASUS also shipped some software that I don't really understand:

-RAMCache II - This has something called DRAM cache allocation, and I can set any number. Default was 2048MB and it goes upto 13,000MB.

-GR8 Fan Profile V1.00.09 - I can't find instructions for it but there are 3 options; Silence Mode, Gaming Mode, OC Mode.

Am i getting a good deal?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:52 AM PDT

Tomorrow I am going to buy a PC from a guy on Gumtree (UK Craigslist), and I want to know if what I'm paying for is worth the money.

    for £250, I'm getting:

i7 4820k, with coolermaster masterliquid 280 pro (cooler apparently new).

    Asus p9x79 lga2011 motherboard.

    2x4gb team group 1600mhz DDR3 RAM.

    MSI GTX 560ti.

    Corsair cx500m psu (apparently new).

    1x500gb HDD and 1x1tb HDD.

and Some old cooler master case.

Is this worth £250? and what should I do to test if everything works fine before buying?

I'm planning to sell off the GPU and get a better one.

Building my first PC in ~ 3 months, wanting to get opinions on the build.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:52 AM PDT

I am wanting to join the gaming PC world in a few months and was wanting to get opinions on my build. Any comments are appreciated!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. I want to be able to play mostly RPGs like Skyrim and fallout but also maybe VR in the future. Since I'm coming from consoles I think another thing I really want to do is play over 60fps at at least 1080p.

    There will be no overclocking.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Including tax I would like to keep it under 1200.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States.

    Graphics card sound problem

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:10 PM PDT

Ok so about 1 week ago I build myself a new gaming rig. The GPU of the system is the ROG STRIX 1060 6GB from Asus, and while it performs awesome in my case sometimes it can get reasonably loud. When I first tested my rig during gaming and inside the main menu / loading a game for some reason my GPU fans will start spinning at 100% for a few seconds. after the game was loaded, they would usually stop and go back to around 30%. In other games the fans will also start when loading a game / in the main menu but they will never stop unless I close the game, but in some cases that doesn't work too. Then I'll have to restart my system to fix it. The temperatures from the card are while gaming at max around 70ºC, so the heat of the card isn't the reason (or am I wrong lol). Can someone help me with this? is this a filthy card, or is this still fixable?

    What I've already tried:

Installing latest BIOS version, Installing the latest drivers from geforce experience and Custom fan curves from MSI Afterburner, ASUS GPU TWEAK II and CAM

I am going to build a system for 1080p gaming on high fps with a 144hz monitor but i don't know anything at all about GPUs

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:50 PM PDT

The problem is that i dont know which 1070 i should buy for a fair price nor if i should buy a 1070 instead of another GPU. I want to buy a GPU that will hold up for high fps, online gaming for quite a long time and i dont have much money to spare (i have between 1200USD and 1400USD).

The CPU that i have my eyes on is the AMD Ryzen 5 2600x and am wondering what GPU would complement my processor, my 8gb of 2666 ram and high fps, online gaming.

What is the right purchase for me?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:22 AM PDT

    Hello!

I'm currently planning a big upgrade to my setup: I'll be upgrading my 1060 to a 1080ti and my 1080p 60hz monitor to something better.

The problem is the latter, I still don't know what I'm going to buy!

Essentially, I have a budget of 1000€ for the monitor, but the less I spend, the better for me, since it would allow me to put more money in other areas of my setup (decorations, desk backlight, microphone arm for my blue yeti, monitor arms for added cleanliness, or even upgrading to a RTX 2080 for the GPU)

My first idea was to aim for a top of the line 21/9: The mighty AW3418DW or X34P (Both 34" 21/9 120hz 1440p). They cost 900 to 1000€ so it would fit in my budget.

But, with that money, I can also buy an Asus PG278QR (or Dell S2716DG, they're both 144hz 1440p G-Sync 27" monitors), and still have some money left to buy a secondary 27" 1440p monitor.

Here's some stuf to take into account

    • Games: I mostly play Fortnite and Overwatch (no 21:9 support). I also play games such as Subnautica, HotS, Fallout 4 (maybe 10% of the time? It's mostly on week-end)
    • Productivity: it's mostly programming (I do that probably 10 to 30% of my time, depending on the days).
    • Others: I also watch a lot of content on Youtube, Twitch, Netflix, I also watch anime (weebing intensifies) and a lot of movies.
    • My time is mostly split this way : 60% gaming, 20% Productivity, 20% Others.

The biggest argument for ultrawide is probably the added immersion and screen real estate without needing a second display. They look really damn clean, and I like clean/minimalistic stuff. However they're a lot more expensive (nearly double the cost for the same specs), aren't universally supported and less than ideal for competitive gaming (I'm not a competitive/pro gamer, but I really like to train and try-hard to get better).

2 screens would be really great for programming (1 screen with visual studio, another one with resources/materials or a show/video to help me stay sane/calm) and gaming (1 w/ the game, 1 w/ random stuff). I'm someone fairly good at multitasking (fastests alt-tabs in the west) so I can really see the point in having a ton of screen real estate.

In the end, 2 16/9 monitors seems to be the way to go for me, at least until ultrawides get on par with 16/9 in terms of price, support and features, but I really want to hear your thoughts about this ! Am I making the right decision?
