Using a Modem/Router combo as just a Modem? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:32 PM PDT I just moved into a house for university and one of the old tenants brought the router with him so the landlord put in a Netgear c3700 two in one router/modem. The connection is spotty and some older tenants said the internet used to not be like this before the switch. If I bought a router, could I use both of them and just use the Netgear c3700 as a modem? Or what would some good options be to get the internet back to the way it was? Thank you for any help! This is the first house I have rented so the internet stuff is all new to me! Port Forwarding through a bridged modem + router? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:41 PM PDT I am trying to forward a port (25565) so that a friend and I can play a game in multiplayer. I have tried everything... I can connect perfectly fine every time, but he cannot. My port is forwarded correctly through my router gui, as far as I know, and my windows firewall has an inbound rule set to allow him through. When he sets my external ip address as his destination, nothing goes through. I am fairly certain it is due to my modem-router setup. I have an XB3 xfinity gateway modem (set in bridge mode) with an Asus RT-AC66R router tied to it. Any ideas? I cannot access port forwarding through the modem, so I'm at a loss. [link] [comments] |
How many and where should I place my APs ? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:18 AM PDT Im moving to a two story 2300ft2 home with about 2000ft2 of backyard and 1000ft2 of a front yard. In the image you can see the floor plan for the first floor. Second floor is almost all above the first one. I was thinking on buying ac lites AP but not sure how many of them do I need and where to place them https://i.imgur.com/0RElhUC.jpg [link] [comments] |
I upgraded from a Linksys E1200 to Linksys EA6350 AC1200 with amazing results. Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:40 AM PDT I was worried I wasn't going to gain any significant speeds from this upgrade, but I was pleasantly surprised. Keep in mind I have the highest tier Cox Internet package using a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. I used http://testmy.net for all my speed tests. To test speeds on my Samsung TV's, I used the browser to visit testmy.net to conduct the download speed, but keep in mind if you're TV is old, it's browser may not be able to conduct speed tests on a large buffer size, if that happens, just do a speed test with 25mb of data or 12mb data. You'll understand what I'm saying once you visit testmy.net ...
I hoped this helps anyone out there considering an upgrade from a Linksys E1200 to (vs) a Linksys EA6350 AC1200. Cheers [link] [comments] |
Totally lost setting up two EAP225 WAP's Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:41 PM PDT I've installed the first of two EAP225 WAP's in my house. The signal coming from the modem/router goes through a network splitter before it goes into the LAN port on the PoE plug, then to the WAP. Bizarrely, I can only connect to the network with my laptop. My iPhone X, my wife's new MacBook Pro and her iPhone 6s all see the network, but (on her macbook), the lines on the finder menu bar just keep cycling. On my iPhone, the circle just keeps spinning in settings, never fulling latching on to the network. Does anyone have any advice before I pull the rest of my hair out? [link] [comments] |
Possible loss of internet connection caused by bad modem configuration file? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 01:05 PM PDT I have had the same cable ISP for over a year and my internet suddenly stops working a couple of days ago. Tech support says they can't do anything so they send a technician to my house. There are no signal issues, and the upstream/downstream and network LEDS are all solid. It's able to get an IP address. The tech calls their people at the NOC, and the NOC people says it's the modem even though there are absolutely no other symptoms other than not having internet access. They were able to send a reboot signal at one point so they can see the modem from their end. The only solution the tech had was to swap out a modem and of course their modem works. I suspect at this point that they've done something to my modem like push a bad firmware or config file that caused it to stop working. The configuration file in the modem status page looks pretty suspicious because it says ' ^1/DDF77AD5/Voice-Only/D3.1', and a factory reset doesn't seem to do anything. Has anybody ever seen this kind of failure on a modem? Modem LEDs are all solid and says it's connected to their network. The modem gets an IP but can't go out to the internet at all? Not getting good wireless speeds Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:50 PM PDT I recently upgraded to a gigabit line. I'm getting a cool 950+ mb/s with my wired connection, but the wireless isn't pulling through. I'm maxing out at 130 mb/s from my phone and another wireless device. I made sure I wasn't on 2.4 GHz by giving 5 GHz its own SSID. My phone can see 7 other APs from where it connects. Is there a way to diagnose or troubleshoot this speed problem, perhaps from the UniFi Controller? Setup: Motorola MB8600 Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 TP-Link 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet POE Switch TL-SG1008P Ubiquiti UAP-AC-Pro Thanks! EDIT: Channel selection is on auto. Width for 2.4 GHz is 20 and 5 GHz is 40. Running all cat 6a and have LOS to the AP. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a router to track home data usage per month. Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:48 PM PDT Hello, I have been harassed by xfinity the past few months about my data usage. It was an average of 400-600 GB per month for several months. Out of no where I am hitting 1100 GB of data per month without any changes in my internet usage. For example today is the first of the month, I have 10GB on my account at noon and no one was awake let alone online. I have changed all of the security and passwords for my accounts and devices, that is not an issue. I currently have a Arris Surfboard SB6190 32x8 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. I am also using a WRT 1200AC Linksys router. I am in the market for a new router as this one constantly drops a signal to the point where I have to reset the device. I read somewhere that there is a compatibility issue between comcast and the devices I own currently. Essentially I am looking for a modem that would be good for gaming and can track the data use on a daily basis. I do not want to be only limited to real time tracking. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:23 PM PDT Can someone help me understand what I'm looking at here? I have an RJ11 Jack that I want to run cat5e to and put an rj45 jack. I had planned to just attach a new cable to the existing cable and pull out the existing cable, fishing the new wire in the process. But I see 8 wires in there, so do I actually need to use my new cable or can I use the existing wires and punch them into an rj45 jack? House was built in 1994, so I'm assuming these are original wires, but not sure as I just moved in a few months ago. Picture in comments [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to monitor usage per device (Asus RT-N12D1) Posted: 01 Sep 2018 12:52 PM PDT Hi, I just moved to a new place and my ISP has a data cap on internet. Currently I can monitor my daily usage through the asus preloaded firmware, but I live with a roommate and want to know how much data each device uses per day. I looked at the Asus Merlin option, but my router does not appear to be supported. Is there any other option I have? [link] [comments] |
Upgrading to Ubiquiti, should I get the AC Pro or the AP HD? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:33 PM PDT EDIT: Thank you for all your suggestions, I'm settled on getting an AC Pro and an ER-X. Right now, I'm looking to upgrade my network from an ASUS RT-AC68U to a setup with Ubiquiti, after my RT-AC68U crashed today randomly. It's starting to show it's age and I want to avoid issues as soon as possible. I've decided on getting an EdgeRouter X for the switch, and is perfect for my needs. However, I'm trying to decide between getting an AC Pro or AP HD access point. I've been reading online that the AP HD performs great, but I see the occasional review noting that the range isn't great. Price doesn't matter here. I'm trying to cover about ~2500 sq ft - A two-story wood-framed house and a deck. The "router room" is centrally located on the first floor, so right now there's great signal on 2.4 & 5 GHz everywhere. Range is what I'm most concerned about, but I'd also like to at least get performance parity to my current setup. Right now on average I'm getting 150-200 Mbps up & down locally (internet is 100/35 so that I'm not concerned about), but getting good local speeds is important as I have a NAS that I download & upload to frequently, and run a backup server that clients backup to daily over Wi-Fi. It's also worth noting that I'd like this setup to last more than 4 years, 8-10 years is the goal. Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Does it matter if i'm going from a 802.3af Ethernet switch port to a 802.3ab mesh router port? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:00 PM PDT So from my modem i am using a Ethernet Switch with 4 PoE ports. I plan to connect it to a COVR D Link router and was wondering if it was compatible with the PoE. The data sheet says it's standards are IEEE 802.3i, IEEE 802.3u, and IEEE 802.3ab. The switch has 802.3af PoE ports and was wondering if it would work. Thanks for the help. Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:12 PM PDT My apartment has a shared wireless router. I have my own router (TP-Link AC-1900) that I was hoping that I could use as a wi-fi signal amp station / have access to the wired ports for my desktop. Is there a way that this is typically done? Thank you all! Also a small, unrelated question: I actually have a cheap USB wireless adapter for my desktop (https://www.amazon.com/OURLINK-600Mbps-802-11ac-Wireless-10-9-10-12-4/dp/B018TX8IDA/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1535840007&sr=1-11&keywords=ourlink+ac600), which gets around 50Mbps max download speeds. My laptop however gets around 150Mbps even if in about the same place as the desktop (this chip: https://www.qualcomm.com/products/qca6174a-dual-band-wi-fi). The wireless adapter is 'rated' for 600Mbps, is this a problem with cheap merchandise? [link] [comments] |
2 Networks and 1 Windows Desktop - How to config? 10g NAS Posted: 01 Sep 2018 03:09 PM PDT Looking for some guidance on the following: 2 networks in my house. 1 primary network all devices - Unifi based 1 NAS network with the NAS, separate switch, and nic card on a Windows 10 desktop My NAS is network 2 of a USG 3, separate IPs and subnet from primary network I want the single Windows 10 Desktop to be able to access both networks at the maximum speed possible. Right now I have the desktop connected to the primary network with 192.168. … and an identified gateway configured. Nic port 1 (1g) on the desktop The NAS is connected to a netgear 10gb switch with a Cat 6a cable going to a a port 2 (10g) on the same desktop. No gateway is configured on this port intentionally. I don't get errors on the above setup, but I'm also not getting the 10g speed. The average speed is the same regardless of the mac port I test it on. If I configure 2 gateways windows will get error messages about having 2. In a past configuration I had both NICs configured with separate gateways and then disabled the primary network when using the NAS. I do get faster speed with this, but I then can't access any other device. I have been told I need to add something to a windows routing table but this still isn't clear to me. Any suggesting on how to isolate and have a fast connection? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Gigabit everywhere except wall plate Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:14 AM PDT Comcast was nice enough to help me wire a cat5e through the wall from the modem in the basement to an old wall plate in second floor. Problem im noticing now though is I'm limited to 100mbps when using this. Do I need another Modem for my House Phone? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:58 PM PDT Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having a great day. For the longest time, ATT has been charging me $30 for landline calls without long-distance calls. 2 months ago, ATT raised the price of my bill to $70. I talked with them over the phone the next day, and after much rambling, I managed to get it down to $40, for a few months. I currently have an Internet plan with Spectrum, and I enjoy the service they have provided me so far. I own a Wireless Router/Modem combo made by Netgear. I read through the manual, and have not found any information relating to hooking up a phone. Spectrum charges $25 in my area for local and long distance calls, which is enough for me to yank ATT out of my house. I have been looking to change my Phone company to Spectrum. Do I need any new equipment, such as a new modem, to support my POTS phone? If I hook up new equipment for my POTS phone, will this have unintended effects on the performance of my Internet connection? [link] [comments] |
How to I block WAN access to a device on the USG? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 02:00 PM PDT I have PiVPN set up on my local network for access to a remote computer securely from outside the network. A couple people have access to it on their phones for various reason and recently found one was using it to stream from a sketchy website taking advantage of PiHole that I also have set up (I dont think he realized what exactly he was doing). But anyway, is there a way to block the PiVPN from accessing anything outside my local network? Basically to require them to disconnect from it to continue using internet normally. I am using a USG for my main router. [link] [comments] |
Netgear ac1750 (r6400); Enough for 5 people users on gigabit? Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:07 AM PDT We had our new ISP come yesterday to install our gigabit service, but my other roommates turned him away when he said the r6400 would not be enough to handle all of us. I looked it up before I bought it and it seemed like it would be enough to handle us all. Compared to what he have now ("400" down with a shitty provider) So basically wondering if the r6400 would be enough to handle 5 people gaming/streaming (at peak, obviously this isnt 24/7) with gigabit service. We are all going to be on wireless, as there are no ethernet ports in the house and none of our rooms are close to the router. We don't necessarily care or expect max wifi speed for each user all the time, just a consistent couple 100, but are going with the gigabit for extra bandwith, and for those who have wifi cards that are AC. If it is not enough, what would you guys recommend? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
New network setup for a larger house Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:30 AM PDT The house is 3 stories and close to 4,000 sq ft including basement. I am in the process of building out the basement right now. The line into the house is in the front corner of the house and coverage to the opposite side of the house and the yard has horrible coverage. Today, I am using the ISPs modem/router. I am planning on hard wiring at least 3-4 spots in the house for work computers and TVs. I have been doing researching on Ubiquiti Nano AP, but I need some help with the setup. What equipment would you buy and how would you recommend running it? [link] [comments] |
linux home networking basic questions Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:18 AM PDT Hi all, I have a noob level list of questions for configuring a small network. First I need some help with the proper terminology, second I'd appreciate any up to date documentation on the software options I'm going to run. Goals:Use my laptop's wifi interface to route public traffic for a small number of raspberry pi nodes. The RPi nodes have statically assigned IP addresses and are connected to a physical switch that my laptop's ethernet NIC is also connected to (also with a static IP assigned). (Ultimately I'd like to run a DHCP server off of one of these nodes, but I'll come back to that when my current plan of static IP addresses is too cumbersome to manage.) Current state:My current state is I have manually assigned IP addresses to the RPi nodes and my laptop's ethernet interface From my laptop: enp0s25 is my ethernet interface wlp4s0 is my wifi interface My laptop is running Fedora 28 with
The RPi(s) are running Debian Stretch. I can ping between the hosts:
Noob Questions...OK here's where my networking knowledge begins to fall apart. I think what I need to do is create a new bridge device and add devices enp0s25 and wlp4s0 to that bridge. However, I'm not really sure that's even correct. Any info, or pointers to good articles I can read is greatly appreciated. edit: <rant> I'd really even like someone who knows what they're talking about to rephrase my problem down to a canonical set of search terms that I can go to Google with. One of the biggest problems I'm facing right now while scouring tutorials is I don't know whether Navigating up to date posts and articles from google searches on Linux networking is a morass of deprecated utilities (brctl and ifconfig). Not knowning the correct search terms is leading me to irrelevant and out of date tutorials on configuration management via NeworkManager vs systemd-networkd. And out of date screenshots of GUI configs everywhere, make this a rather frustrating problem to try to even learn the terminology of. </rant> thanks [link] [comments] |
DNS problem with ASUS AC1300 (RT-ACRH13) in AP mode Posted: 01 Sep 2018 11:15 AM PDT I have an RT-ACRH13 in AP-only-mode and it keeps mangling DNS queries from anything that has packets traverse it. During the 'interception' it removes the actual host's MAC/IP and replaces it with it's own (e.g. the management interface mac/IP) and then sends it to the server that the RT-ACRH13's DHCP info is configured to use. Since the internet router and the DNS server have, necessarily, blacklisted the IP of the RT-ACRH13, DNS is broken for anything wifi or ethernet related that has ethernet frames passing through this device. This behavior is most unexpected as it is essentially a man-in-the-middle dns hijacking…I have other 'routers' and 'extenders' in AP-mode and they don't do this.... just this ASUS model. The hosts that are victims of this behavior think they are using the LAN's DHCP server, not the RT-ACRH13. I would like to know if there is a way to disable this or a 3rd party firmware that could enable me to use this device (the only workaround I've been able to verify is to use a hosts file, and that only works for the 30 or so devices on my local-network, doesn't really scale to the internet). Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:11 AM PDT TL;DR - I moved into a house, it came with free satellite internet (only internet available out here- its not too bad w/ a crazy setup and AP to a giant 60 foot tall mount with a dish on top). Trying to see if there's options of using some kind of PoE splitter - to run two ethernet cables to two seperate routers. I have a link to the adapter I have below. Basically have satellite internet/digital path and the house came with this thing in the wall - an ubiquiti Model #UBI-POE-24-5 Power-over-ethernet "Adapter" that has an ethernet going into it (I believe the ethernet is coming from the AP/Receiver on my house) and then another ethernet going out of it providing internet, and it also has a power supply, obviously. I know very little about PoE and adapters/injectors- but I have a new neighbor, and we are sharing internet- but my wifi isn't good enough so we were going to run an ethernet out there. Apparently they can't handle just a splitter with hardwire out there (bc my router can handle another network switch fine) and I definetely don't want to do a "daisy chain" setup. I hope this makes sense - but my question is pretty simple maybe - How would I go about splitting this connection before my router and avoiding a daisy chain? Is there some kind of PoE switch that can go before or be used in conjunction with this PoE adapter (that is supplying my router internet/data currently)? Here is the PoE adapter that I have- https://www.amazon.com/BQLZR-UBI-POE-24-5-Ethernet-Injector-Wireless/dp/B00W2Y4K0S I believe it just has an ethernet that runs out to this series of a couple AP/Dishes on the side of my house, as its a pretty ellaborate setup but actually isn't very bad at all. I'm also afraid of bandwidth problems or NAT issues- hence avoiding the daisy chain made sense- so I'm trying to figure out the best steps to avoid nat issues and/or bandwidth throughput issues- if there is such a thing when it comes to splitting PoE. Any help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:01 AM PDT Here's my current setup: Comcast Gigabit -> Netgear CM1000 -> Orbi AC3000 -> Cat5e -> [Desktop (in my home office)]. Does that make any sense? Do I need a different router? Should i just keep the Orbi in the media enclosure (It's wifi transparent) and use that as my router? if so, what sort of specs/brand/etc. should i look for? a search online shows me edge routers, which seems like the right thing, but I'm not confident on that. I'm looking for reliability, relative ease of use, and if it has a decent firewall ability that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:57 AM PDT Anyone else have the Altice One Boxes? We recently switched over. The hardware we were given was 1 box which acts as the Modem/Router and also brings in the phone line and acts as a Cable Box. We then have 3 smaller boxes for the rest of the TVs in the House. Before we made this switch, I had an Asus Router and was able to access my FTP Server from inside and outside the Network. Now with this new Altice Box I am unable to access the Server even from within the Network. When I plug in the address of the Server from FileZilla's Client, it just sits and tries to connect. It hasn't timed out, but then again I haven't given it a chance to however I also not getting any connection errors as well. Has anyone else had this problem? [link] [comments] |
Unusually high data usage (what could be causing it) Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:26 PM PDT Long story short over the last 2 months my data usage with Xfinity has been through the roof. Luckily they give you 2 months without charging for going over 1024 GB, well this month I'm over by 100GB. I currently have Xfinity 150MBPS with a leased router that i have my Airport Time Capsule connected to. I also have 3 older airport extremes throughout my house that are acting as extenders. My question is why is my data usage so high compared to families my size. We all use apple products and i have an iMac and a macbook pro. I did a virus scan on the iMac and it did not find anything. I thought maybe there was a virus that was causing high data usage. I changed my wifi password, and turned off the guest and xfinity hotspot on the modem/router. Am i missing something that would cause high data usage. My kids play fortnite but that would be a lot of gaming for them. It seems like I'm using approx 36 GB a day, and to me thats insane. I am going to buy a Arris modem and use my Airport TC for my router to see if that helps but does anybody else have any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
