First off; Thank you. I would not have been able to complete this if it weren't for the help of you guys and gals.

I wanted to share my results with you all, since /r/buildapc has been such a huge help to me in this build. About 6 months ago I could not tell you what a CPU or GPU even stood for. After a ridiculous amount of research and thread reading and countless notes (yeah, nerd. lol) in my notebook comparing and contrasting every single aspect of each component, and then comparing every single product out there for said component, I came to a complete list.

A huge should out to /r/buildapcsales as well, as I ended up buying every single item I purchased from posts over there, (except one pre-owned part from /r/hardwareswap). I do feel like despite spending a decent chunk of change, that overall my computer is amazing and I spent way less then I would have had I purchased it in a store. I could have saved maybe another $130 if I sacrificed aesthetics, but I wanted a fully functioning computer that would give me a chubby at the slightest glance from across the room. (Mission Accomplished).

Why does increasing resolution lower CPU load?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 12:02 PM PDT

So it's commonly known that in 1080p the processor serves more as the bottleneck but as you scale to higher resolutions the GPU takes more of the load and becomes more of the bottleneck. My question is, why exactly is this the case? What makes the CPU more engaged in 1080p than 1440p?

I'm debating upping from 1080p to 1440p and was just curious. I find my 1080 only at about 40% utilization whiling playing 1080p games. I find my frames are lower than I think they should be with a 1080. I find Overwatch only running at around 180fps and fortnite only around 144. This not max settings either. Would upping the settings actually force my GPU to take more of the load? My frames are almost identicle to what my old Rx 580 got. Is my R7-1700 holding my GPU back?

Do lights in your PC take up a lot of power?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 01:04 PM PDT

After I built my PC my parents noticed that even when it is off, the lights of my motherboard still keep shining their nice breathing effect. It doesn't stop me from sleeping but at the same time, I wonder, do those lights take a lot of power? And is it worth to save some of your bills as unplugging power cables doesn't sound like a good thing either. What are your thoughts about this?

Need help choosing motherboard for 2600/2600x.

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 02:59 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I am trying to decide between either the ASUS Prime X470 Pro and the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon.

I will be getting either the 2600 (will overclock) or 2600x (let it auto-clock, but may manual as well). Which motherboard should I go with?

When Zen 2 comes out I will be deciding whether to upgrade to that, or switch to intel depending on performance. If that info makes any difference.

Finished my first build in 6 years! Please help me make it quieter...

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 02:54 PM PDT

    First of all, hi!
I have recently finished building my PC for the first time in 6 years.
    Here she is!

    Specs:
    CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
    GPU: MSI GTX 1080 Gaming
    RAM: 16GB G.Skill Aegis 3000Mhz
    SSD: Crucial MX500 500GB
PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 10 500W
CASE: Fractal Design Define C Mini

I know the Fractal case is pretty difficult to keep cool and airflow-y but I love the look and had a Define R4 for my previous build. I have two Fractal GP-12 fans inside my case, one intake and one exhaust.
My problem is I noticed that when gaming my GPU gets really hot and loud, it reaches around 80 degrees and shoots the fan speed % to about 80-85 (it sounds like a jet). I tinkered with the settings and fan curves for my GPU and case fans to keep it quiet idle and under load (here is my Afterburner screenshot). I set the max temperature to 70 degrees and set a fan speed of 60% while it is under that load (the fan isn't that audible at that speed). The temperature spikes of my GPU also make my CPU hotter, it sometimes reaches 65-70 degrees.
My question is if I planned to unlock more potential of my GPU while keeping my PC quiet what are my options?
I really love the look of low profile cpu coolers and the Wraith Spire in general so if I were to upgrade my CPU cooler I would choose one that performs better while being quiet and looks similar.
Should I add more fans or change the ones I have to better performing models? Fans that are both quiet and move more air (or have better static pressure, I'm not good at case fans).

My priority is to keep my system nice, cool and quiet. I know this sounds like a lot but I would appreciate any help.
Disclaimer: I don't really want to get into noctua as the color scheme is something that would bother me a little too much.

Thank you and have a great day!

What’s a mistake/or mistakes you made while building your first pc?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 04:58 PM PDT

This could be a helpful post for first timers to read through to make sure they don't make the same mistakes. My mistake was buying DDR4 ram with a motherboard that took DDR3 :(

    Gaming computer for my kid

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 07:52 AM PDT

I'm looking for a gaming computer and I've come up with this. I'd like to keep it under 800 initially. I also want to consider that more money can be put in later by my kid. For example the 8GB ram choice is because they could buy more ram in a month as long as the Mobo supports 4 slots. Storage is not needed as that's the only part that their existing pc has decent.

Edit: Prices are all relative. I intend to buy everything from Microcenter.

Is my CPU a bottle neck (i5-4460 with GTX 1060 6Gb)?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 08:50 AM PDT

    Hey all,

Essentially what the title says... Trying to understand if I have a bottleneck here.

While playing games I see my CPU sitting at 99%.

I also see my memory sitting pretty high with chrome open at like 80+% consistently too (currently have 8Gb of RAM).

Do I have a bottleneck here? Time to update my CPU?

Putting together list for a friend, need final confirmation before ordering to make sure everything is all good.

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 04:14 PM PDT

He will be using this for gaming at 1080p 60 fps, maxed out settings. No video editing or anything RAM heavy, and may want to add another monitor in the future. I think this build is good, but just want to double check with the masterminds over here :) Max budget of $1200 including monitor, went $5 over but that's not a big deal.

I have a lot of files I want to keep on my HDD, but I've heard that copying the files and moving it all to the SSD is a problem for some reason. I want to move windows 10 to the SSD, and I can always reinstall games, but I want the files I have (school stuff, photos, etc.) to stay on the HDD. How do I go about this?

[Build Help] Case I've wanted for a long time isn't sold anymore..

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 03:27 PM PDT

I helped a friend build a PC and found a great case, the DIYPC Gamestorm-W. I loved working with it, loved the look, tons of room inside, and the price was great! I'm just starting to find parts to upgrade my PC and have had my eye on this case since. Unfortunately, it is not sold anymore... What can I do? It's not on Amazon, Newegg, Ebay, nothing. Should I give up and move on? Can anyone recommend a similar case? I'm bummed :/
