List of the best available laptops for gaming and for college.

List of the best available laptops for gaming and for college.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:38 PM PDT

This list will mainly be for USA market, I have another list for Canada here

Best college laptops in Canada in 2018 (in the range between 500~1500)

Best Gaming Laptops in Canada in 2018 (in the range between 500~2000)

And I am planning to do one for the UK as well, soon for other countries, the price and availability is so different that it is much harder to build so instead maybe you can take advantage of this MyUS wesbite promo of free trial membership to ship laptops from USA to anywhere else).

*Other useful posts that you should check out *

Some terms that we will use on this list:

NVMe: is just like an SSD only faster, minimal difference unless you are a profissional in certain work fields, and if you are you would know if you need one.

Thunderbolt 3 : is a port, it has a lot of usage, some use it for eGPU (external GPU where you connect a more power GPU to your laptop for better gaming experience), some use it for external screens, some use it to charge (feature not available in all TB3 ports), some use it to copy/paste data as it is much faster than a standard USB 3.0.

MX150: is a GPU, It is good enough to low to med range gaming, if you go to higher end games you will have to lower the settings to get playable FPs.

FPs: is short for frames per seconds, it is a way to determine how smooth the gameplay will be, most gamers aim for FPS around 60, or higher if you are playing FPS (First Person Shooter), on a higher refresh screen.

Most laptop's screens are 60Hz, but higher end gaming laptops come with 120Hz, and some come with 144Hz screens.

    ********** Gaming laptops ***************

    300~400 range Acer Aspire E 15

    • Intel HD Graphics 620 is the best iGPU you can find for this budget which makes the laptop the best option for light gaming on a very tight budget.

    • Full HD (TN) 15.6 screen, which is very rare for this budget range and great for watching movies/videos.

    • Comes with 8th gen i3, and 6GB ram.

    • Good upgrades available, can go to 16 GB of ram, and with a little more work than usual you can even fit a SSD on it.

    • USB type C which is another rare thing to find on this budget.

I thought I would give you a little more in depth review, so here it goes.

    • Battery life is from 7 to 10 hours of normal non gaming usage.
    • Backlit keyboard only comes on when you touch the buttons to save battery, it is quite.
    • Easily upgradeable, we recommend you add 4GB stick and a SSD if you have the budget for it and it would turn into a perfect laptop (more so than it already was).
    • Minimal bloat-ware, speakers are above average like what you would expect from a laptop, Trackpad doesn't have separate buttons, but they work well, the outer body has a matte finish to it which makes it feel really good even though it is all plastic and doesn't attract fingerprints easily).

550~650 The Acer Aspire E 15 Not the same model.

    • NVIDIA MX150 which is one of the best for this range but still not great for newer games Benchmark(use the same website to check the benchmarks of the other GPU from the right hand list).

    • 8th Gen i5 quad core CPU, Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, MX 150 GPU (a nice step up from the iGPU 620 on the other acer ).

    • Long battery life (advertised of up to 15-hours of battery life), weight 5.27 lbs, backlit keyboard, USB type C.

    • 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD both are somewhat standards in 600 range so finding them on 500~ range is somewhat a catch.

Here is a little in depth review of it :

    • Same with the cheaper Acer, it is made from plastic, but it feels sturdy, screen comes with anti glare finish so it will work well outside.

    • Battery life is great about 5-8 hours of general usage.

    • Backlit keyboard, quite and comfortable, Trackpad have been getting some mixed reviews, I think it is a software issue, or maybe it is because some people are not used to trackpads.

    • Speakers are good, above average for laptops in this range, the gaming performance is also above average since it is only MX150 but it the best for the budget.

    • Very thin, very quiet (can barely hear the fans), It has room for more ram as well as more SSD, Fingerprint magnet.

    650~750 ASUS TUF

    • One of the cheapest laptops with 8th gen i5 CPU H version, also comes with 8GB ram, 1TB SSHD (technically faster than a normal HDD but didn't look into it thoroughly), 1050 GPU which is good enough for low to mid range gaming.

    700~800 The Nitro 5

    • It comes with Intel Core i5-7300HQ, GTX 1050Ti with 4GB GDDR5, 8GB of ram, 256GB SSD.

    • Very good build quality, average battery life (3.5-5 hours of light to moderate usage), Backlit keyboard, USB type C, Full HD IPS.

    750~850 Dell Inspiron 15 7567

    • 7th gen i5 quad core CPU, 1050Ti GPU, 15.6 Full HD IPS screen, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.
    • backlit keyboard, no USB type C, on the heavy side for this size.

    750~900 ASUS FX503VD

    • One of the cheapest laptops with 7th gen i7 quad core CPU (HQ version), 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD, 8GB ram.

    • Full HD 15.6 inch screen, Red-backlit keyboard with anti ghosting, and 1050 GPU.

    850~1000 The Dell i7577-5241BLK-PUS

    • Full HD IPS 15.6 inch screen, Thunderbolt 3, USB type C.

    • Great value for money with the current sale, and very big battery which provides good battery life.

    850~950 HP Pavilion Power 15-cb077nr

    • 15" Full HD, Intel Core i7-7700HQ (I believe this is the cheapest option that has this CPU), 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, Windows 10 Home.

    • Advertised battery life of up to 11.5 during minimum usage.

    900~1000 The Dell G5

    • The keyboard is backlit red.

900~1000 The CYBERPOWERPC Tracer II T15300

    • 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core, 8 GB ram, 240GB SSD, 15.6 inch Full HD IPS, 1050Ti GPU.

    • Comes with i7-7700HQ quad core CPU, GTX 1050 Ti, 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, 8 GB ram.

    • You can also get this configuration with bigger SSD, or this configuration with the bigger SSD and double the ram.

1000~1100 The Acer Predator Helios 300

    • One of the best priced laptops with 1060 GPU available, it also comes with Intel Core i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, high quality Full HD IPS screen (but some report it as a little dim), 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD.

    • Very good build quality with great heating management as per The--Technician, and around 6 lbs.

    • Different cheaper listing

1100~1200 The Acer Predator Helios 300 2018 version

    • The main difference is the 8th gen CPU plus the 144Hz screen and it is more expensive.

    1100~1250 The Eluktronics N870HP6 Pro-X

    • Intel 7th gen i7-7700HQ Quad Core, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, 16GB DDR4 RAM.

    • Great value for money if you are looking for a 1070 GPU.

    *********** Honorable mentions ***********

The ROG Strix GL753VD(because of the bigger screen and 1050).

General usage and college usage laptops

FYI: the upcoming laptops are refurbished laptops, which allows for better value for money, and better specs which equals better performance, they are a little heavier, but the smaller screen makes them good college laptops.

    100~150 Thinkpads from eBay

    • This is a link for a filtered list of laptops, all refurbished, all with great specs for the price , mostly i5 3rd gen dual core CPU, 8GB ram, either 128GB SSD, or 250HDD or 320HDD, so check the description well before you click the buy button.

    150~200 Thinkpads again

    • Slightly more expensive Thinkpads, I assume they come in better conditions, but as always, it is best to check the description well when you are buying from eBay.

    • Link is there because availability on the cheaper options are limited.

    300~400 range Acer Aspire E 15.

    • This is suitable for both general usage and college usage, it is heavier than most college laptops, but it has very good battery life and great price point as well.

    • If you want a more detailed review I wrote it at the top of the post, this is the same laptop in the first post of the laptop.

    350~400 range The newer version

    • Comes with 8th gen i3, and 6GB ram, the rest is the same as the older version, worth the extra cost if you can afford it.

    300~400 ASUS VivoBook Flip 14

    • Good starting point for those interested in 2 in 1 with low budget.
    • 4GB ram, 64GB EMCC, Windows 10, 14 inch in 13.3 size, light weight at 3.3 lbs.

    350~450 ASUS VivoBook 14 E403NA

    • This comes with a weaker CPU, no 2 in 1, but it also comes with double the storage, Full HD screen and the same weight and same ram.

    **

    400~500 ASUS VivoBook F441BA

    • Great value for money with 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, 14 inch Full HD screen.
    • It is relatively new so not a lot of reviews available, but it seems that the fans are loud.

    400~500 ASUS VivoBook F510UA

    • 8th gen quad core CPU (a great enhancement in performance vs the 7th gen), 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, Full HD 15.6 inch screen.

    • Very light for the size and price at 3.7 lbs, USB type C, No backlit keyboard, long battery life.

    450~550 HP ZBook Workstation

    • Price suggests this is a refurbished model, if you plan on getting it double check with Amazon before buying.

    • 14 inch Full HD screen, USB type C, backlit keyboard, lightweight at 3.61 lbs.

    • Much more powerful i3 8th gen quad core CPU (compared to 2 in 1 with this size and budget).
    • 4GB ram, 1TB HDD for storage, Full HD IPS 13.3 inch 2 in 1 (again rare for this price).

    550~650 ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA

    • 7th gen i5 dual core CPU, 6GB ram, 1TB HDD, 2 in 1 Full HD touch screen.
    • USB type C, stupports stylus/acer pen, very lightweight at 3.5 lbs.

    550~650 Lenovo 320S

    • Low quality res screen which is why the price is lower than the competition, but still got better value for money.

    • i5 dual core 7th gen CPU, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD, 3.7 lbs which is lightweight for the price.

    500~600 Acer Aspire R 14

    • 6th gen i5 dual core, 14 inch full HD screen with 2 in 1 features, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

    • USB type C, 1-year Accidental Damage Protection, 2 in 1 features and very light at 2.9 lbs.

    550~650 Dell Inspiron 13 5000

    • Make sure to buy it from the "other sellers" as it is cheaper from there.

    • It comes with 8th gen i5 quad core CPU, 8GB ram (upgradeable to 32 if needed which is very rare for that size), 13.3 inch full HD IPS screen with 2 in 1 features and touchscreen, 1TB HDD.

    • Very good value for money, and lightweight at 3.44 lbs.

    • The version with SSD for a little more.

550~650 The more powerful Acer Aspire E 15

    • Its specs and review is mentioned in the gaming section, just to save space to stay within the character limit, sorry.

    600~750 ASUS VivoBook S

    • Very light weight at 3.2 lbs, long battery life, USB type C.
    • 8GB ram, Full HD 14 inch screen, 1 TB HDD for storage.

    University/all round Laptop UK, <=£500?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 02:40 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm not too specific but I don't really wanna go over £500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Obviously I don't want awful battery life but doesn't have to be top of the range battery, would prefer good specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't want it toooo big as I'm gonna be using it for university and will have top carry it around in my bag

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A not tiny though

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Probably not likely, but possibly using game engines such as unity and unreal engine in the future, not sure how demanding they are so if too much then ignore

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really

    Thanks :D

Best buy for a CS Major/Programmer?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 11:17 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $750-$1000, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is a high priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important - weight more so than thinness.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, preferably

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. An obnoxious amount of Chrome tabs Slack Various code editors/IDEs Civ V

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Strategy games like Civ V, Northgard, Banished and stuff like that. I'd like to be able to run games like this at medium to high settings. I'm not interested in running any newer, more intensive games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard, preferably with a backlight. A number pad would be a huge plus. Reliable build quality. Good quality display. Video output.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a computer science student looking for a solid laptop that will serve me for at least a few years. I game a little bit, but I'm not worried about running the newest stuff. My biggest concerns are portability and battery life. My last laptop was a 17-inch touchscreen, so it died very quickly and weighed a ton. I'll mostly be coding, listening to music (with headphones), and watching video content on the machine. Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Looking for netflix streaming / business laptop ~300€, europe (de)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:20 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    300€, Germany

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specifications for the money - I'm fine with a battery life of about 3-4h.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not much, although it would still be nice for it to be light and slim but not necessarily

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

I'd prefer if it could run win10 smoothly, but I am able/willing to get Linux running for a better performance.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

Minimum of 14 inches, rather 15 - or more if its within the budget.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

The laptop will be primarily used to watch streams through Netflix and YT and should do both without stuttering - also I intend to use office software such as word and notepad.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I don't intend to play games on it.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Nothing specific, i'd just be happy to have an easy responding keyboard and a relatively precise touchpad.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Well I don't need any HDD space except for future OS updates.

I did a bit of my own research and the three models that came to mind where: Lenovo ideapad 100s-14IBR, HP Stream 14 and the Acer Aspire 1 but I heard mixed opinions about all the 3 models and since I really have no idea about hardware speccs I thought you ppl could maybe help me - thanks in advance.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 05:00 AM PDT

So i have narrowed down my choices to 3 laptops. 1. asus vivobook f510ua 2. acer aspire 5 a515-51g 3. dell inspiron i5570-5906slv-pus

My day to day use would mainly be lots of web browsing and netflix. (would prefer a good display) Also would be using Photoshop and Lightroom and would occasionally use premier pro for video editing. (Nothing major)

Feel free to suggest a better one which is similarly priced.

    Worth waiting until Black Friday?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 04:49 AM PDT

    Previously posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/9i1ek3/done_with_apple_need_new_laptop_for_general_use/

I looked at a bunch of laptops and can't really decide. I have no hard needs and am just looking for a laptop for general use and have a decent sized budget.. but is it worth waiting until Black Friday to pull the trigger? My current laptop is usable but not ideal.. but I can hold out the two months if there will be good deals to bite on. If it's just going to be $100-$200 off, I'd probably just buy it now..

As someone who has never really looked at Black Friday deals for laptops.. any advice?

    Laptop for outdoor work?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 04:11 AM PDT

    Dear reddit,

I'm starting to work with a submarine inspection robot (ROV) and I'm looking for a good laptop that could take the wear ant tear of field work. I don't need it to be the fastest machine, the computing tasks it has to execute are quite simple. However, I need to see properly the image of the screen, since we navigate the robot with it. Any suggestions? I tried asking at a "standard comptuter shop" but I was not convinced by the answer. Or maybe if there is a better subredit to ask this, could you let me know? Thanks ahead!

Looking for an All Around Laptop

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 02:17 AM PDT

Since I'm moving abroad next year I'm in need of a laptop. I'll be mainly using it to edit photos/videos. So it should be good with rendering those in light room/Photoshop and Sony Vegas. I'd also like to be able to play some videogames on it. Nothing too graphically challenging, some indie titles and newer games on low settings. Price range: 900-1200 bucks

So the key points would be: Compact, 16 Ram, i5 or higher and preferably a gtx 1050

Help decide which laptop to get

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:41 AM PDT

I can't choose between these laptops,

    Acer Swift 3

    Asus K570UD

I'm looking for something light with a sleek design for college with a little bit of gaming capabilities within 700$~800$ budget. Battery life is important.

I wanna pickup the asus because it has a 1050, but some reviews mention the laptop has dim and grainy display. So Im kinda skeptical what to choose. So what do you think guys?

Am I buying too much computer?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:35 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: $1000/US - I can go a little over for tax since my state makes requires us to pay on online purchases.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs

How important is weight and thinness to you? not too important. would like to to be not too bulky/heavy but thinness is not important either.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. i know at this price point, i'm looking at Windows...

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. anything over 13"! If a laptop was cheap enough with the specs I need, I could potentially afford an external monitor.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop and occasional office programs. I do a lot of email campaigns so my browser is always running, often with video streaming in the background.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality. I can't afford to have it go out of commission and loose days of work while it's being repaired.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm confident enough to put in some RAM or a graphics card in, but that's about it as far as doing any upgrade customization. I've always had someone build me computers for super cheap or free so i've never really had to pay attention to specs before but I understand a little more than the basics but am unsure if I've picked out more than I really need and/or justify the cost. Right now, I'm running a Lenovo T7500 @2.20GHz, 3.GB of RAM, with a pretty bad 13.9" display. There is an SSD but i'm not sure of the specs.

For the past several years, i've been doing freelance graphic design and I can easily be in front of my computer for 12 hours. I use Adobe CS6 right now, Windows 10, and Office 2007 - it's pretty brutal. It seems the gods have shone on me this month and i have a little extra to shell out for something that will handle all the latest and greatest software. I'm slowly moving to saving my files on the cloud so i'm not sure I need a ton of hard drive space. I have another external SSD 1TB. I also do some light coding.

I think I've pared down my choices. This ASUS looks ok with the specs as is but i could throw some more memory in there. I've seen it as low as $629 but am a little worried about having it overheat since I'm doing graphics work for long periods of time. This Lenovo looks pretty bad ass and I've been using one for a while now, but i have no brand loyalty. I added 16GB DDR4 2666MHz (1 Dimm) and 128GB Solid State Drive, M.2, PCIe to the base model of the Lenovo and it comes out to $926 including a little discount.

TL;DR: I'm unsure if I've picked out more than I really need and/or justify the cost and could easily change my mind if there is a better option for me.

Having a trouble choosing ACER swift 3 laptop.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 12:21 AM PDT

Alright, after many hours of searching I finally landed on ACER swift 3. Loved the specifications and everything but I dont like screen shape (thinner proffered). On the ACER website there was different models:

    Standard one, I see everywhere.

    And

Model with the screen I like

Question is: only real difference seems to be SSD size. DO you guys know any other difference? Which one would you suggest to buy and why?

Macbook pro 15in with touchbar vs MSI gs65 15in Budget about $2500 U.S

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:40 PM PDT

So I am currently enrolled in community college but am going to be transferring to a university in 1 year. I also like to edit videos on the side and dabble a lil bit in photoshop. I wanted to ask Reddit to see what they prefer the Macbook pro 15'with touch bar or the MSI gs65 15'. I have looked at the specs and think these too look the best and will give me the best performance. They are around the same price range and now I will list the specs

Macbook pro -6-core Intel Core i7 processor -Brilliant Retina display with True Tone technology -Touch Bar and Touch ID -Radeon Pro 555X graphics with 4GB of video memory -256gb SSD -Intel UHD Graphics 630 -Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports -Up to 10 hours of battery life² -802.11ac Wi-Fi

    MSI gs65 -15.6" Full HD anti-glare 144Hz 7ms 72%NTSC display -8th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-8750H mobile processor -16gb of ram -512gb ssd -gtx1070 -8hr of battery life -HDMI output -Thunderbolt port, Mini DisplayPort, headphone/SPDIF combo jack and microphone input. -Next-Gen Intel® Wireless-AC connectivity (2x2, 867 Mbps)

Also is the touchbar really that useful on the macbook pro? I game also nothing to heavy mainly just mobas.

Cheap university laptop for homework, movies and maybe a small game. 300$ budget (max I can do is 320), Romania

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Romania, 300 bucks, I can do 320-340 max.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd like a good battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows please

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm starting University in a few days and I was looking for a laptop to keep me company if the schedules are horrible which would require me to spend an entire day at Uni without being able to take the bus back to my home to my actual PC. I'm looking for a cheap laptop for a budget of 300 bucks that I can use to do project / take notes / Uni stuff in general, watch a movie and maybe play a game

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Shadowrun: Hong Kong and Left 4 Dead 2 is what I mostly play. Medium works I guess. I'm not desperate for high. Most C-RPGs aren't really demanding since they're more like pictures with a few animations on them and text and L4D came out around 2008-2009 so I can't imagine it would be too demanding.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and attachable mouse option. a lot of GB of memory to save movies and projects. 500 gb i guess is good?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've done some of my own uneducated research and I've come across a LENOVO V110-15ISK with the following specs

    Intel® Core™ i3-6006U 2.0GHz
    4 GB RAM DDR4
    1000 TB memory
    Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 620
    DVD RW
    2Kg
No OS (I can fix that easily)
    1366 x 768 resolution

    Is this any good?

    Laptop for CAD

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:43 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: US, ideally less than $900, but could go a little higher
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Im looking for good battery life with decent specs.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important. My previous laptop was over 7 pounds and was super annoying to take anywhere, I would like something more convenient to take places
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Somewhere between 13 and 15.6 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'll be using the laptop for a lot of CAD work, specifically Solidworks, for the next few years
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play some lighter games, such as CSGO at at least 60 fps (quality isn't as important)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Needs to be of good build quality, and specifically an ethernet port would be a huge plus
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd like to be able to use the laptop to do light gaming and CAD work for the next few years at least. If my budget is too optimistic and I need to put down more to get a quality machine, please let me know. Thanks!

ASUS Zenbook UX330UA: Price drop and back in stock!! (i5-8250U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, 13.3" 1080p)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:22 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I know that this laptop is in high demand, and recently I saw it rapidly increasing in price and eventually none were available under $900. Now, the laptop is back in stock for cheaper, so if you want to check out the laptop, select your country!

    US: UX330UA

    Canada: UX330UA

    UK: UX330UA

It appears that the Canada and U.S versions have dropped in price.

Cheapest laptop that will allow me to stream games I'm playing locally. Canada.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 11:33 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I have no budget, but I do want the cheapest laptop that will allow me to accomplish simultaneous streaming (Twitch) and local gameplay at reasonable settings. I understand this will likely fall in a higher price range.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I doubt a 2 in 1 would be suitable for this, but maybe one of you will prove me wrong.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Unimportant. I'm assuming gaming laptops will be among the first recommendations, but regular 'sleeker' laptop recs are welcome as well.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm new to (modern) PC gaming and quite horrid at it despite loving it very much; this is the niche I'd be going for in my stream lel. I'd like to run games like Fortnite/Overwatch at settings that would... not disgust my viewers. Reasonable settings. I'd also need to run any requisite streaming software.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm assuming an SSD would be preferable, but perhaps I'm wrong.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I clearly know very little about gaming and laptops. But I would like the latter to help me accomplish the former (and stream it!) for the cheapest possible price.

Student - Please help me find a decent laptop for a decent price

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 04:18 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £300 - £500

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent CPU/SSD is all I want really. Need it for Uni work and ideally for programming also.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I'd want it to be thin and light as possible.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, but I don't mind if it doesn't come with any at all. I can install it myself.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. In the pursuit of a light laptop, a smaller screen size is probably preferable.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No games, just programming stuff like Eclipse.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not particularly.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I can buy a mSSD separately and build it into the laptop myself if necessary, so suggestions don't need to accommodate a decent SSD by themselves.

    Cheers!

Which one is the best Gaming Laptop I can get for £600 (UK)?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:14 PM PDT

Hey guys, I like gaming but I am bad when it comes to components, so I'm asking for your help with this one. I've tried to look for videos on YT, but can't find videos that offer choices with the right currency, it's all USA Dollars, and £600 is about $800, so I know that I can get better than those.
