Why do some people advocate against dual booting Windows/Linux?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 09:55 AM PDT

I'm considering making the switch to Linux, but as is common I'm a bit hung up on giving up Windows gaming capabilities.

I'm excited about Valve's recent news and the release of Steam Play with Proton, but I'm sure it'll be a while before that works in a robust fashion since it's so new.

Anyways I've been considering dual booting just for gaming, though I've read several places that people are against that for various reasons. Apparently security is a concern? Just wanting to wrap my head around the considerations here before committing to anything.

    Thanks for the help!

Why should I use vim or emacs instead of modern editors?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:53 PM PDT

Emacs and Vim have a huge amount of users but I dont understand why people use these editors. When I tried either of them its feels like a time machine to the 80s or something.

I use Geany for programming and TeXstudio for documents. These oldschool editors feel like im unnecessarily restricting myself.

    Why would I use either?

mysterious seg faults on multiple distros

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:41 AM PDT

I have been having a problem with every distro I have installed. I think it might be my ram since it has persisted across every distro I have installed from Arch to Debian to Ubuntu to Tails and Parrot. All of them have weird seg fault crashes that causes me to have to restart my computer, and then once it restarts its fine. No seg faults or problems after words.

Its extremely annoying, I tested my ram(DDR4) with memtest86+ and it said everything was fine. I don't know of a better memory tester but its very strange. My heatsink is put on correctly so I don't think its that and plus, its not restarting like a heatsink thats not on correctly would. I've tested my ram multiple times and each time it comes up fine. Could it be my ram channels? Or somehow my graphics card? I'm running out of ideas here.

    Question about removing old kernels

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:23 AM PDT

Hi, I'm following up on the problem I posted about here - https://www.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/comments/9cz2sx/unable_to_update_my_vps_and_i_dont_understand_the/

I have a VPS running Ubuntu 16.04.5 and I now have only 160mb of free space. I've tried a number of things to free up more space, including deleting unused themes, plugins and images from the wordpress websites I'm hosting on the VPS. I also used the sudo apt-get clean command.

I read that manually removing unused, old kernels could free up space as well but there are risks in doing this. Should I go ahead and try removing these old kernels or are there other, safer ways to try to free up more space? If deleting old kernels is the best option, what is the best way to do this?

    Thanks.

Update: I now have 245mb of free space after optimizing my mysql databases.

Made the plunge and it was easy! You can do it!

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 04:00 PM PDT

In case there are people here on the fence about switching, I just want to give you a nudge. I have only rudimentary computer skills. Started reading about Linux 3 days ago, as I'm trying to learn some basic computer science (determined to be able to help my toddler daughter have skills for the future). That led to me wanting a Linux computer I can play with. So today I took my ancient and unusable (unfixable grey screen) 2010 MacBook Air and switched it to Xubuntu. It worked nearly flawlessly and now I have a surprisingly fast little netbook!

Only issue was on my first attempt I had a bad version of the install image file so got a weird error. Googled the error, redownloaded to file and bang, worked.

Want to say thanks to everyone who contributes to this kind of software and to support communities! Gives me hope for the future of computing.

    Edit: Typo.

Linux Mint 18.2 will not startup fully after Timeshift restore - no GRUB (?)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 05:30 AM PDT

A series of cascading failures yesterday while trying to upgrade from Mint 18.3 to 19 has led to my needing to restore to a snapshot taken with Timeshift. This is my first time using Timeshift for this purpose.

After running through its process, Timeshift ends with a line to the effect of "Restore completed with errors. If the snapshot does not load correctly, run Timeshift again and choose another restore point." No other information is given.

After restarting, Mint does not fully load. The computer makes it as far as turning on the backlight and keyboard lights, then whirrs for a few seconds before going quiet and leaving the backlights on.

When booting from a live USB, a partition for 18.2 can be mounted and its files accessed through navigation.

I have not had any luck finding references to this issue elsewhere and am not sure what to do next, short of formatting the drive and doing a clean install of 19. I would prefer that I don't have to.

ETA: I have tried restoring several snapshots (one from 18.3, now this one 18.2) from Timeshift and had the same issue.

How to see mount command output?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:13 AM PDT

I'm having intermittent trouble mounting an NFS share on freenas, from Ubuntu Server 16.04.5LTS. When I restart either machine, it's a toss-up as to whether or not I can mount the share. In order to get it working in the past, I've just continuously attempted to mount the share over the course of a few days to a week, and eventually I can get it to work. Once one machine can mount it, others usually don't have an issue.

I can ping the NAS at all times from each machine I'm trying to mount on, so I don't believe it's a firewall issue. I also have set 777 access in the past in order to see if it was a permissions issue, but that didn't solve the problem either.

I'm tired of just hoping it works. When using the mount option, is there a way to see the output, so I can determine why the share isn't mounting?

    Best Window Manager for XFCE?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:16 PM PDT

I am already using OpenBox as my WM. It is much better than simple but a little bit primitive XFWM.

But for now I am looking for some light and scalable alternatives which are fairly easy to use (config files in XML are not as effiecent as I thought). But I have only used GNOME Shell, OpenBox, XFWM and Compiz in my life.

I was thinking about KWin, but how is the integrity with something other than KDE? Maybe i3? But I am afraid of i3, to be honest :v

What do you think, guys? Maybe I should stay here on the OpenBox? And one more thing - I do not want to switch to other DE, my XFCE is heavly modified and for this moment, after weeks of work, I just have to stay here :D

Xfce vs Cinnamon vs MATE for high DPI

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:49 PM PDT

Thinking about installing Linux Mint on my Dell XPS 15 laptop with a high resolution (3840 x 2160) screen. Do all of them have screen scaling? (I usually do 200%)

Also, if I have UEFI secure boot and Bitlocker enabled for Windows 10. Will that present any issues when trying to install Linux for dual booting? Anyone have a guide they recommend?

Partitioning question for a fresh install of Mint 19

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:29 PM PDT

I have new M.2 drive showing up tomorrow in the mail and I've got a SATA3 SSD to use for the OS. In the past, I've always just installed using quick defaults on a single drive and leaving /home/ as part of the OS. I read somewhere that putting /home/ on the M.2 drive separate from everything else can help keep personal files safe in case of an OS crash that requires a reinstall.

My question is, is there anything I should know going in to this since I have zero experience creating seperate partitions?

How do I upgrade my kernel to 4.19rc5?

    LInux Lite & Lenovo IdeaPad 2 in1

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:14 PM PDT

Sorry If this was asked somewhere else on this subreddit.

I recently acquired a new Lenovo IdeaPad 2 in1 for a really good price and after noticing that Windows 10 used up about half of the 64GB and really taxed the CPU, I decided to try out Linux on it. Instead of doing a dual boot, I committed and went all in. Everything has been great, Linux Lite only used about 15GB and runs really smooth. BUT, there is a problem.

After a few times of shutting it down and starting it back up, Linux Lite doesn't actually start up. Instead I am taken to a screen that basically says type HELP for other commands. None of which do anything. I didn't take a picture of the screen, but will once it does it again (i re-installed lite).

I've tried other DISTROS and same thing happens. All is good but then whether I shut it down or hibernate it, at some point it won't fully boot.

    Any Advice?

    Thanks in advance.

Here are the specs on the Lenovo...

Compiling patched kernel. Should I git commit?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:53 PM PDT

    Hi!
I patched the 4.18.y branch of the linux kernel.
Last time I tried to compile it, an error messaged displayed. Something along the lines of "current branch doesn't match the upstream origin".
I'm confused. Should I commit my changes after applying the patches? Or doesn't the `patch` command operate on the filesystem in a way equivalent to git.

    Thanks in advance.
(and sorry for the not very precise report on the error yielded the first time. However, I can replicate it if needed)

Ubuntu Mate 18.04 or Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 12:11 AM PDT

I've been using Linux mint for a while but have recently acquired taste for Ubuntu's UI so I'm considering switching to Ubuntu Mate for my laptop. I can't really seem to find a good comparison between the two so I'm hoping someone here can help me out. My main concern is battery life and how resource heavy they are compared to each other. I had Ubuntu installed for a while but I was not a fan of how often it made my fans spin up when mint barely needed too (I try to be funny). I'm going to liveboot Ubuntu mate and try it out for a while but I'm still fairly new to Linux so any info y'all could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

In case it makes a difference, my laptop is an HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 with an i5-8250u, 8 gb of RAM

Trackpad problems on Dell XPS 13 9360

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:16 AM PDT

So recently I had installed Ubuntu 18.04 onto the Dell XPS 13 9360 and changed the desktop manager (KDE) because I preferred it this way through the terminal. Does that make it a Kubuntu? I am not sure.

Anyway, the main problem is that the trackpad is not behaving how I want it to be:

Pinch zooming when pressing control just goes out of control regardless of whether I pinch in or out, and require struggling to get it right

Edge Scrolling on the touchpad is unavailable

I had tried to mess with synaptics and libinput but none of them work for me to get what I wanted on the trackpad. Currently I think I am on synaptics simply by the fact that I can tweak the options through a graphical interface in options.

Can anyone provide a solution for this please? Thank you in advance.

The themes i have tried are all the base ones plus Arc-kde, they apply correctly on his but on mine they only partially apply and sometimes just appear completely broken, is there any suggestions as to how i can fix this?

    Audio problems in Ubuntu

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:20 AM PDT

So I'm very new to linux (about 3 hours) and I've only got one problem. I'm running Ubuntu on a 4 year old HP Envy 17 but my audio sounds awful, like it's not using all of the speakers. Output is fine through the headphones and I've found some resources myself to try and fix it myself. I understand that I need to use alsa-tools-gui but sudo apt-get install alsa-tools-gui returns

    Reading package lists... Done

    Building dependency tree

    Reading state information... Done

E: Unable to locate package alsa-tools-gui

    Automating data recovery?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:15 AM PDT

Basically I'm working on a script to automate wiping disk drives. The people who decide what's 'good enough' for my company to re-sell computers with drives intact has declared that we need to be able to certify 3 passes, apparently even for SSDs. So if we're not treating the SSDs any different than HDDs, I may as well use the same program for both, and DBAN doesn't do SSDs. A script for shred seems fairly straightforward, but I'd also like to add in something that will scan the disk and make 100% sure that there's nothing left, just for confirmation in case something goes wrong. And for simplicity's sake, I'd like something that gives either a 0 or 1 result only, pass or fail, no extra options to deal with. I'm googling the heck out of it and I just keep ending up with more rabbit trails to follow so I figured I'd ask here, in case anyone can point me in a good direction :-)

How to see startup script output in Arch?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 09:44 AM PDT

I've created a custom Arch liveUSB that installs a disk image on a single board computer automatically on boot. Everything works, but I can't see the output of the script on the command line. I would like to see the status of dd, and also the message echo'd when the process is done.

I'm using the releng profile with archiso: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/archiso

Here's what my script looks like:

The script that runs at startup

Here's what the .service file for it looks like:

The .service file for the script

And here's my addition to the customize_airootfs.sh file that builds the iso file for the live USB:

    https://i.redd.it/v9o6zk71d0p11.png

When the liveUSB boots, I just see a terminal prompt, no dd progress or "Success!" messages. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Sorry about any weird formatting and thanks in advance.
