Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:57 AM PDT Do you need to learn a computer language before using Linux? I'm wanting to step into computer science, but have no background in any computer software. Would it be wise, or unwise to install Linux yet? I was hoping that by diving headfirst into it, i would pick up the code along the way. Thanks, M [link] [comments] |

mkpasswd SHA-512 not creating hexadecimal hash Posted: 29 Sep 2018 12:03 PM PDT I'm currently playing picoctf.com and now I want to get the password to the root user and I have the shadow file. I guess that hash is already in some database, otherwise it wouldn't be a question in that game. I read that SHA-2 generates hexadecimal hashes and whichever online hash calculator I use, they give me hexadecimal hashes. Though when using mkpasswd -M SHA-512 string salt I get $6$somethingNotHexadecimal. Can anyone explain? [link] [comments] |
Need some help installing UMS 7.2.1 Posted: 29 Sep 2018 11:54 AM PDT I'm attempting to install Universal Media Server on Ubuntu 18.04. I've followed all the instructions until the step where it says to type this in terminal:
After I type that in, I receive this back:
Is there a work around for this? The link I typed in works perfectly, but for some reason Terminal is not wanting to agree with it. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a portable Linux distro aimed at designers Posted: 29 Sep 2018 02:18 PM PDT I like portable usb bootable distros. I am looking for one geared at graphic designers. I have been using IRO and it's almost perfect. Although it hasn't been updated in some time and get the idea that it won't be. Is there anything a little farther along with more support that can run off a usb drive? Good cloud support built in is a plus. Such as Google Drive and cloud print etc. Many thanks in advance. Adding 2nd link to bridge trashes network Posted: 29 Sep 2018 10:21 AM PDT Screenshot enclosed... If I connect just em2 or just em4 everything is fine. The minute I connect the 2nd connection it trashes the entire subnet. What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2018 03:29 AM PDT I would really like to get into the linux world but i have absolutely no idea where to start. I do not own a personal computer as i use it with other family members. What would be the best way to learn about what linux has to offer and how to operate it? [link] [comments] |
Changing audio devices through command line (pulseaudio) Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:37 PM PDT I'm currently running a setup in which I have a computer monitor and a TV connected to my computer which is running KDE Neon. Ideally I'd like to have the sound output through TV (HDMI) whenever the TV is on and otherwise I'd like the sound to come from my computer's speakers. I realize whenever I switch to the TV I don't really need to do more than just click the speaker icon and click the HDMI device -> set "Default" and when I turn off the TV I can just set the Built in Analogue Stereo device to "Default" as well. However if I'm watching TV I usually don't have a mouse nearby, just a keyboard. I've tried changing the default audio device using commands pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo-extra1 and pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo using the names of the two devices that I keep switching between. For example, when I enter the first command, the GUI shows that the HDMI device has been set to default, however it still keeps playing the audio in my speakers. The only way I can actually switch the audio device seems to be by clicking it in the GUI. Am I missing something about how I should switch the default audio device or does it simply not work outside of the GUI? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:28 PM PDT I am using Manjaro i3wm which has PCManFM and ranger as the pre-installed file managers. Before I installed Dolphin, if I clicked on "open containing folder" via Firefox's downloads menu, it would open in ranger. After installing Dolphin, it now looks like this when clicking on "open containing folder" via Firefox's downloads menu. Normally Dolphin looks like this I suspect it has something to do with the "default file manager" settings and mime types, or perhaps my theme isn't applying correctly due to the way it starts...? I had a look at the arch wiki, but I'm still unsure what I need to change to fix this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:21 PM PDT I'm trying to get my mouse to behave in a particular way. Right now double left click selects a word, triple left click selects a line, and middle button pastes. If I triple left click (hold the button down) and drag my mouse down it'll scroll and copy. I would like to be able to triple left click, let go of the button, scroll up and down on my own, and right check where I want the copy to stop, and be able to middle click paste. Any ideas how to do that? Using bash [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:12 PM PDT Hi there I want to take the plunge into Linux for no apparent reason. I have really no experience with it but I'm looking into it as more of something to have fun with and figure out as I go. Before I do I was wondering if there is anyway to make a bootable copy per say of the windows 10 currently installed on my Thinkpad so I can go back to windows if needed if I realize I have no idea what I'm doing with Linux and have to go back [link] [comments] |
Manjaro or Antergos for daily use Posted: 29 Sep 2018 03:08 AM PDT am a 3 years user of Linux Mint KDE. After Mint remove the KDE edition i search for my next distro. I want to try arch based so i am between Antergos and Manjaro. For a casual and with moderate experience linux user what do you suggest me between this two? [link] [comments] |
I don't use my desktop for anything. What can I do with it? Posted: 29 Sep 2018 08:27 AM PDT In Windows I like to have a desktop with nothing but the Recycle Bin since it looks clean and makes accessing the trash easy, but I only do this since I can't do anything else with it, other than use it as a folder with limited space. In Linux Mint I currently have the Trash and a shortcut to Computer. But I was wondering if there is something else that I could do with my desktop, since I don't use it for anything and only have it clean for looks. Can I do anything cool with it, like have a terminal always open there or something? [link] [comments] |

Hello! I'd like to install Vesta, but my server is already configured and hosting my website... Posted: 29 Sep 2018 08:25 AM PDT I of course get the error "Control Panel should be installed on clean server" error and I'm afraid to force the install because I don't want to break anything. I'm running apache2, mysql-server, php (it's Xenforo). What is the safest way to install Vesta, have it function properly, and not mess with my website? Thanks in advance! Posted: 29 Sep 2018 03:52 AM PDT I've tried using AT_REMOVEDIR By default, unlinkat() performs the equivalent of unlink(2) on pathname. If the AT_REMOVEDIR flag is specified, then performs the equivalent of rmdir(2) on pathname. [link] [comments] |
