How does apt judge whether dependencies aren't being used anymore when you use autoremove?

apt autoremove removes dependencies that aren't being used anymore, but how does apt know that no programs are using those dependencies? How does it figure that out?

Trying to compile package from github source, and am completely confused

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:56 AM PDT

    https://github.com/cedl38/xfce4-windowck-plugin/archive/v0.3.0.tar.gz

This is the package I'm trying to compile, and I am confused. Some do ./config or something like it or cmake etc. I'm a linux noob that isn't used to compiling (I use Linux Mint 19 XFCE) so I'd really appreciate some hand holding!

I'm trying to achieve a unity like XFCE setup and I need this menu, but there's no binary package I think.

Can't dualboot Kubuntu with Windows 10.

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:26 AM PDT

I have installed kubuntu into a logical partition on my secondary hard drive.

However the system doesn't see that partition as a bootable one.

My Motherboard is set to UEFI only and I can't change that, secureboot is disabled.

Here's a screenshot from the terminal. My primary drive is invisible here because it uses AMD StoreMI and cant be mounted under linux. The other drives are my secondary HDD and the live USB Flash drive.

[KDE Neon/Ubuntu in General] My notebook screen "dies" if I lower the brightness too much or let it turn the screen off to save Battery

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:36 AM PDT

My (cheap) notebook have a weird behavior in regards to screen control, if I let it turn the screen off (brightness 0), the screen stops aswering and I cant change the brightness at all, forcing me to make the notebook sleep to regain the controls over the brightness.

What I know about the problem:

    - It is not a "flavor" problem, KDE Neon, Mint, Ubuntu 18.04, even Debian have this behavior.

    - A simple solution IMO would be to disable the "brightness 0" as the minimal value.

    - Didn't tested with other distros (CentOS, OpenSUSE, etc), but my guess it is a kernel<>hardware problem, never saw it in any of my notebooks before.

    - If i change to terminal interface and change the brightness to 0, even typing (in the dark) the command to make it 100% brightness don't work.

    - The GPU is a Intel i915 one. I don't have any experience with changes/tweaks to it.

    - I have no warning on my kernel/systemd/log about any kind of error, it is probably hardware related.

Any ideas/links/tutorials/rituals to the dark gods/hints to fix this?

It is really, really annoying to force the notebook to hibernate and wake it up every time i need to work on it.

How do I recursively unzip all files from a directory and send them to a different directory, while also sending a log to another directory?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 11:52 AM PDT

I've just started using Linux and so far I've been able to get help for everything I need on google, but right now I can't find a good way to do this.

    Trying to recursively unzip a lot of '.gz' files located in a particular directory (figured I would use 'gunzip -r'), as well as create a file that shows everything that was or wasn't uncompressed, and any errors in case there are (pretty much what is printed on screen by using 'gunzip -v or --verbose') (Figured I would use the 'nohup' command). Additionally (and what I believe is the tricky part), I need the uncompressed files to be redirected to a different directory that is not the one where the compressed ones are, but I need to do that **directly** with gunzip or something like that, not redirect them afterwards;

Eg: I can't just use a 'mv *.unzipped_extension ${UncompressedDirectory}' after running gunzip inside the compressed directory since I don't have write permissions in that place ]:

So far it seems like I'm not a complete idiot, as this command seems to work minus the 'redirect' part:

nohup gunzip -rv ${CompressedDirectory} } > ${LogDirectory}/Unzipping.log (it creates the log in my desired location, and does the recursive unzipping INSIDE the compressed directory, so I just need this command to let me redirect the output to ANOTHER directory)

I also found the 'gunzip -c' command, which should let me redirect the uncompressed files to a different directory(?

However, trying to run this doesn't work...

    nohup gunzip -rvc ${CompressedDirectory} > ${UncompressedDirectory} > ${LogDirectory}/Unzipping.log

"-bash: ${UncompressedDirectory}: Is a directory" No shit...

Probably is a very newbie question but that's what I am :/

Sorry about any inconvenience and thanks in advance, much appreciated.

ALSO, AM I DEADASS AND AM JUST OVERTHINKING THE WHOLE THING?

That is, am I not even gonna be able to use gunzip inside the directory I don't have permissions to write in?

If that's the case, this is just dumb and would need to ask for permition regardless, so I'll probably end up using the 'mv' command after running the gunzip inside the compressed directory...

What's the advantage of using the software centre on an distro versus installing from the official website?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 07:41 AM PDT

I converted to Linux Mint some three months ago and am wondering what's the advantage of using the software centre to install a piece of software over downloading/installing it from the software's official website.

I mean is there a reason why one should prefer to use the software centre other than convenience?

How can you see all the programs installed on your system (without using the default Software Center)? Is there anything like a programs list like there is in the Windows control panel?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 12:24 PM PDT

Typing `apt list` or `dpkg -l` and looking through that list isn't practical because it lists every single package on your system, many of which are obscure packages I don't recognize (but are likely important for something else). Not to mention it'd be time consuming to find what you're looking for.

Also, I'm wanting to avoid Software Centers because they're really opaque in that I don't know what they're doing (the software center on Ubuntu 16.04 installed a bunch of snaps on my system which caused quite a few problems for me as a beginner), and also they don't seem to be consistent, ex. I'll uninstall something through the software center, restart my computer, and it'll say that program is still installed, or ex. it won't list programs I know to be installed.

**TLDR** Is there a way to see all my programs listed in a neat way?

Is gaming good on Linux (and good gaming distros)

    Posted: 11 Sep 2018 11:49 PM PDT

Hello everyone, don't know is this is the right subreddit for this, but here it comes I want to know if gaming is good on linux, by gaming i mostly mean steam games (TF2, Portal 1 and 2, Gmod, Half Life 2, etc.) And i want to dual boot my laptop to try Linux out, but my friend who (says that he) knows alot about Linux, says that it's stupid to run games on any Linux distro, is it really that bad? Like, I've read many articles saying that gaming on Linux is getting alot better, but right now, i dont know if it's true or not, can you help me out? EDIT: after all the help from my fellow redditoes, I've settled on mGAMe, a gaming centered Manjaro fork

    Unrecognised HDD

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 03:02 AM PDT

I've got a new computer. It has a SSD that has Windows and OpenSUSE Leap installed onto it I have a dualboot set up. I have two HDD formatted in NTFS. I also have a new, unformatted 10TB HDD that is not being recognised by OpenSUSE.

I'm wanting to use this HDD for data storage. Is ext4 the most reliable to use on Linux for this?

How can I get OpenSUSE tor recognise this new 10TB HDD, and how can I format it to ext4 so that I can start using it to store data?

    Thanks!

Manually have to launch xterm from installed software

I can't use regular terminal because of this bug/glitch/whatever it is:(xenial)jacob@localhost:~$ gnome-terminal Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Proccess org.gnome.Terminal exited with status 8

    Control wraith prism led's?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:48 PM PDT

I just build a new computer using a 2700x, and while the the fan part of the wraith prism can be controlled through my motherboard bios, it seems that the cooler's led ring needs the coolermaster program to control it. Is there anyway to do this on linux? Or do I have to install windows just to turn off the rainbow in my computer?

Why would Ubuntu and Debian have power/hardware problems on an old laptop when Antergos has no problems?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:43 PM PDT

I have used Ubuntu derivatives since they still shipped you disks from the Isle of Man (around version 4?), so this is nothing against them. I am also too lazy to install straight Arch, so I am not exactly one of "those" Arch people.

I have installed probably 15 distros on my old laptop (the Thinkpad Yoga 11e, which makes my Windows 98 computer look like a speed demon), and absolutely nothing works but Antergos. Ubuntu thinks "suspend" means "lock this computer and you have to force kill it;" Debian doesn't even recognize the keyboard or trackpad, let alone have any notions of suspend. Antergos just works. Why is that? Is it a kernel thing?

If you are still reading this, I do have a slight issue with Antergos: a login screen (lightdm?) often shows up before the custom Antergos login screen, so I often accidentally log in twice. Is there any way to prevent that?

Help me understand this regex quirk

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 09:30 AM PDT

Hey, I am not sure if this is the right place to submit this question or not. If there is a better sub, please let me know.

I have already solved the problem, but I don't understand why it works the way it does.

Simple background: I am trying to extract a version number from a Ruby Gemfile using grep and regular expressions. The version number has the format of

    number.number.number

    Gemfile:

    ruby '2.5.1'

    bash script snippit:

    RUBY_VERSION=$(cat Gemfile | grep ruby | grep -o<some other flag> '\d+\.\d+\.\d+')

    The possible regex flags:

-E, --extended-regexp Interpret PATTERN as an extended regular expression (ERE, see below). (-E is specified by POSIX .) -F, --fixed-strings Interpret PATTERN as a list of fixed strings, separated by newlines, any of which is to be matched. (-F is specified by POSIX .) -G, --basic-regexp Interpret PATTERN as a basic regular expression (BRE, see below). This is the default. -P, --perl-regexp Interpret PATTERN as a Perl regular expression. This is highly experimental and grep -P may warn of unimplemented features.

I understand why -F doesn't work, but I am at a loss as to why -E and -G don't work, but -P does. Especially since the BSD version of egrep works perfectly with the same input.

Here is a picture of the output of all flags on Ubuntu 16.04.5

    Thanks for your help!

Is there a "proper" way to setup multiple linux servers and share files?

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 01:07 PM PDT

This is a very general question, but how do most of you setup your home servers? Right now I have a CentOS box and I'm debating how to actually set this up "properly."

    What I'm looking for is:

    1. SMB and NFS share for my environment of Linux and Windows PCs. This is going to be housed on my two 3 TB drives in RAID1 configuration.
    2. Nextcloud Server
    3. Various testing servers for web, ldap, and DNS.

So the first two are most important to me, hows the best way to go about this? First, where do you normally put your share folders on a server? I've seen some tutorials put share folders in \samba, \mnt<folder>, or just <folder>. Also I'm debating how many VMs I should be running for this, should my NFS/SMB server by separated from my Nextcloud server?

Any help or even a server newbie guide would be much appreciated!

/var/cache/apt doesn't exist? (trying to check the size of cache)

I'm on KDE Neon which is based of Ubuntu so it's seems strange that the cache would be stored in a different place than on Ubuntu. Any ideas?

How can I set GPU scaling options in linux? (nVidia)

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 08:39 AM PDT

Under Windows I could use the nVidia control panel to choose between monitor/GPU scaling, and I could set the GPU scaling mode between no scaling, stretched, and preserve aspect. I like my pixels chunky, so I always set it to no scaling, which is the best next thing to integer scaling.

How can I do this under linux? It's the main thing I'm missing so far since I switched to linux, there doesn't seem to be any options for this on nVidia X Server Settings...

    I'm using Manjaro.

Xorg is going to drive me to drink. Xkbmap always loads us keymap first [Void]

    Posted: 11 Sep 2018 09:18 PM PDT

Ive asked a couple questions about this as Ive progressed through this issue, not all on here, but none of them were on the right track. I thought the options I was throwing at xkbmap were not working at all, that is wrong, they are. I can see it being loaded in the xorg log, no errors, and if I type "setxkbmap -print -verbose 10" I can see that it is loading the new layout. Also "setxkbmap jp" in the command line works until xorg is restarted or I toggle fcitx-mozc... which really sucks being stuck in kana mode without the keys you need. The problem is it is only adding the layout and us always comes first, so when xorg starts Im stuck in us and my keys are wrong. Im sure if I added toggle keys in the xorg.conf it would switch between them, but Ive been too preoccupied to think of a key combo that is not in use and I didnt really care because that would be for the sole purpose of reassuring that xorg.conf works as it does.

I just have the following in xorg.conf.d

00-keyboard.conf Section "InputClass" Identifier "system-keyboard" MatchIsKeyboard "on" Option "XkbLayout" "jp" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" EndSection

and setxkbmap -print -verbose 10 outputs

    Setting verbose level to 10 locale is C Trying to load rules from ./rules/evdev... Trying to load rules from /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev... Success. Applied rules from evdev: rules: evdev model: pc105 layout: us,jp variant: , Trying to build keymap using the following components: keycodes: evdev+aliases(qwerty) types: complete compat: complete symbols: pc+us+jp:2+inet(evdev) geometry: pc(pc105) xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compat { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc+us+jp:2+inet(evdev)" }; xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc105)" }; };

Now how do I get it to stop loading us or at least load jp first so I start an x session with the right keymap? Do I have to like recompile evdev? Ive tried to load the libinput driver, but Im not entirely sure its installed, it stuck to evdev. I am curious what it would do if I quickly reinstalled void on another hard drive, this time choosing the settings for a jp keyboard in setup just to see if X would default to us or jp. I wouldnt know how to transfer that to my current install, but its a curiosity.

Edit: my homework and I are begging for help at this point, Ive been at this for a week

Edit2: Fixed! Fcitx X keyboard integration was the problem. Disabling it in fcitx-configtool>addons>advanced fixed the issue :)

Need some help regarding error messages when updating Ubuntu Mate to 18.04

    Posted: 12 Sep 2018 06:05 AM PDT

'm running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and 18.04 is now available. I got the update a couple of days ago but when given the choice I canceled it because I wanted to back some things up before updating (I got a warning about that not all software might be updated or something so thought a backup was prudent).

When I run the software updater now I get this error message. https://imgur.com/a/39XqFQc

    • Why can I only do partial upgrade? When I recall now, I think I got a similar message when it asked me to update to 18.04 the first time.
    • What does it mean that I can only do a partial upgrade, will I lose data?
    • Can I update whatever I can't update now in some other way?

Thanks for any pointers and help!

So yeah I would drop windows for ever if I could get good performance in linux. Nvidia drivers are the 390xx'ish if I remember corectly.
