I was looking for a laptop replacement, (I had an ASUS ROG G75VW with more than 4 years of use) I am a graphic designer and I am about to start studying Concept Art, that's why I was looking for a light-weight yet powerful laptop that would be easy to carry and move around with it every day, I was deciding between the AERO 15X and the ASUS Zephyrus M GM501, they have very similar specs, but I finally decided to buy it because of it's color accurate screen and battery life. Most of time I work in photoshop with very heavy files, with my last laptop while the files were becoming bigger and bigger they tended to behave sluggish even more when applying filters or effects, so far with the AERO 15X I haven't had this kind of issues, it runs smoothly and fast, I still want to make more tests with it's performance and check out it's behavior mostly with After Effects, I have done.a couple of renders and they were very fast. I work with a Wacom Cintiq 27QHD as my main Screen, both screen look quite similar, with little perceptible differences. Touch input runs smoothly and I haven't had any issue with Wacom Pen since it was properly configured and calibrated. Well, I don't really care about that this laptop don't have G-Sync since my main purpose is for graphic design and digital painting and I am not a heavy player. I think Game performance is impressive, I love racing games and I have installed forza Horizon 3, Forza Motorsport 7 and and old version of Dirt 3. Forza games look impressive (mostly forza Mortorsport 7), so beautiful textures, shades, reflexions, particles and rain look pretty real, these games look so sharp and I can tell the difference between these on AERO 15X and XBOX ONE S, Even in the Cintiq QHD screen they run smoothly, I've seen on it a couple of glitches while playing, but I don't see it as a mayor issue, doesn't bother me. It gets so hot while playing, but you can solve it by putting it in on a taller stand to make more room to air to circulate and help the fans to dissipate heat. I would have been great to have at least 1TB of storage, Forza games consume at least 100GB, so it reduces a lot your available space for other games, programs and mostly work files. Overall I think it's the best decition I could have, it's a really great laptop and I hope to have more good impressions about it. I hope it could help you decide i little better. Help me find an awesome laptop?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 11:52 AM PDT

Hello, I'm trying to find a laptop and I'm finding it extremely hard, there's huge amount of choice. The plan is to outline some key specifics and hopefully someone can suggest something 😁.

I'm a college student. I'm looking for a portable laptop, id like to use it on the train, coffee shops and college. Preferably a smaller laptop than the standard 15". I like the idea of a laptop and tablet combined.

I'm not looking for a "beast". Something that's just good enough for browsing the web, finishing assignments via my office 365 software. And netflix / spotify. The main purpose of me buying a laptop is so I can work on my long assignments, so ideally a good keyboard is necessary.

Unfortunaly, my price range is around £500 being the max budget. So don't bother suggesting MacBooks or surface pros 😂.

Im looking for a laptop that can do all of the above. I don't really want a laptop that performs slow, it's like my worst nightmare when a device I own is slow and sluggy.

Ideally the perfect laptop would be one that isent too expensive but performs really well for the price.

    Thanks, and good luck 😁

    Help/advice on upgrading my ZBook

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:32 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm a grad student whose future career will revolve around GIS work using ArcGIS software like Arc Pro. I'm familiar with the components of computer hardware, but I have zero experience building or upgrading hardware, so I'm hoping I can get some general advice on what my options are going forward. If this isn't the right place to post this kind of question I'm sorry. I'm not sure if r/techsupport or r/buildapc is a better fit for this type of post.

I currently have a HP ZBook 15 that does a pretty good job for me. Whenever I bought the laptop I immediately upgraded from 8 to 20 GB RAM, but other than that I don't really know what can be upgraded on my workstation, and I feel like if I were to start this endeavor without some advice I might end up throwing money away. And btw, if you all think that a better option would be to build a computer from scratch, please let me know. I don't have a full understanding of the cost-benefit of upgrading a computer vs. building. If there are components that will limit my performance and cannot be upgraded, I'd like to hear about it. From my limited knowledge, I'll list which hardware components I'm debating on upgrading and the questions I have about them:

    1. GPU - From my understanding, I think that I will get the most benefit if I can upgrade my GPU. I know that my maps are slowly rendered when I'm working with moderately large amounts of data (multiple rasters mostly). I don't know what it takes to upgrade a GPU and what upgraded GPUs are compatible with my machine. • Current hardware: NVIDIA Quadro K1100M with 2GB dedicated GDDR5 video memory • This note is found on the HP ZBook 15 specs: Microsoft DirectX 11.1 (Shader Model 5.0) and OpenGL 4.2 capable
    2. Drive – • 500GB 7200 rpm SMART SATA II HDD (I think) it could also be: • 500GB 7200 rpm SMART SATA II Self Encrypting Drive or: • 500GB 5400 rpm SMART SATA II Self Encrypting Drive FIPS 140-2 compliant

I just know for sure that it's a 500 GB HDD, and those are the only 3 types listed under HP Zbook 15 specs. ArcPro recommends a SSD but it is not required. My understanding is that upgrading to a SSD would improve the speed that I can download/zip/unzip files and data? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    1. Processor –

    • Current: 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4800MQ (2.7 GHz, 1600MHz, 6MB L3 cache, 4 cores, 47 W) Up to 3.70 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology.

HP Pavilion 15 Overheating - Less Than 1 Month Old

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:00 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

I recently created a reddit account and this is my first post so I just wanted to start off by mentioning what a great society this is here.

To get to the point, I bought a HP Pavilion 15 a couple of weeks ago for my gf and she plays WoW on it. The issue here is that after an hour of playing it gets hot on the right where the USB ports are as well as on the front right (where your right palm would stay when idle for instance).

I wanna hear what your thoughts are and whether this is normal or if I should probably get it replaced with someting else? Specs below:

    CPU - Intel Core i5-7300HQ

Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050

    RAM - 8 GB

    HDD - 1 TB

    SSD - 128GB M.2 SSD

Windows 10 and WoW are on the SSD. Generally the laptop is pretty fast and is great so far, but only overheats during gaming of >1h.

    Looking forward to your comments!

Spilled a small amount of beer on my laptop, what to do?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 01:29 PM PDT

Hey, some help needed and I don't know where to go. I'm on a trip and I spilled a small amount of beer on my computer. The computer looked fine before I closed it and disconnected everything. I'm in a pretty remote place, I can't open it and don't have any store nearby that can help. What can I do more??

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The Bigger the better

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to get into programing and all things IT. (Don't know what programs are needed for that) gaming, and school work like word, excel, PowerPoint, ect...

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rainbow Six Siege, PUBG, COD, Fifa. High settings with good fps would be nice.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Hold up for a long time, be quite, not to overheat, and preferably a food keyboard.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Preferably less than 4.5 lbs

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~14-15"

High pitched noise on right side of laptop

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 11:40 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I have a Dell XPS 15 and have been noticing that on boot from sleep, or even boot from shutdown, there is always this high pitched noise that comes from the ride side of my laptop. I have tried to boot it up again many times, but the problem seems to keep persisting. Any ideas on what this could be? This is still a fairly new laptop, and I am not at all sure what is going on...I really appreciate all of the advice!

    Thanks

    Advice about GL703 needed

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 09:27 AM PDT

    Hello

Currently I'm searching for a laptop to replace my old PC. I'm considering buying ASUS GL703GM and I have a few questions.

There are several configs with different specs and I thinking about buying one of these:

    1. i7-8750h, 12Gb RAM, 1tb hdd + 128gb ssd, gtx 1060 3Gb ~ 1390$
    2. i5-8300h, 8Gb RAM, 1tb hdd + 128gb ssd, gtx 1060 6Gb ~ 1420$

Considering the fact that I'm living in Russia the price is not that high for such a laptop (although in the US there are better options for lower price).

I wonder if I should pay more for 6Gb GPU but less powerful CPU and less RAM. I'll be using it mostly for programming, website creation (which requires me to have a lot of tabs being open at the same time), probably a bit of photo/video editing and gaming.

    What do you suggest?

HP Laptop power button blinks once but won't boot

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 09:21 AM PDT

I have a laptop that I replaced the fan in because of thermal shutdown.

The laptop booted but didn't see the hard drive, so I took it apart again

to verify all cables were attached correctly and reseated all of them.

I tried to boot the laptop back up, but only get a single blink from the

power button, but doesn't boot or do anything else.

I removed the power source and held the power button in for about 20 seconds.

Tried again, but to no avail. I also removed the cmos battery for a couple of minutes.

The results are still the same. Press the power button and one blink and nothing else.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

New third party laptop battery not charging and a little swollen... fix?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 08:07 AM PDT

I bought a new third party battery for my Thinkpad X40, only to find that the battery will not charge. I plugged it in to charge and the laptop stayed at zero% and the battery itself made a squealing noise. I then removed it and discovered the pack is a little swollen... is there an easy way to fix this, or did the battery go bad sitting on the store shelf. also, would it be good to exchange it for another one?

The charging circuitry in the laptop is fine, the old battery lasted 2 minutes then died.

    Any Advice?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 07:36 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone,

I'm a 3D Artist looking for a Desktop to build or Laptop to purchase. (It depends on your advice) Until the end of next year I will be moving around and it will be very difficult for me to build a ATX or even Micro ATX form factor PC and carry it around with me. I'm still considering Ghost Louque S1 (like Jay did but without liquid cooler) or Corsair One? Maybe? If I will spend 2000 pound on something I want it to last for long long years. I build two work stations from Scan.uk and they are going strong for 8+ years with some upgrades.

I absolutely love the look of the Razer Blade 2018. It looks professional clean and good specks with 144hz. Problem is the temperatures and I'm worried about the longevity of this product. Another issue is that I haven't heard anything good about Razers customer support.

AERO 15X, the design looks good but I heard that it comes with issues straight out of box and I got no intentions on spending that much amount of money on something that needs fixing.

MSI GS65 the motherboard is upside down and the build quality for that price is meh and again I haven't heard anything good about customer support.

ASUS laptops in my humble opinion got the most childish and terrible design in the whole laptop industry. I love the ROG motherboards etc but I'm not a huge fan of their laptops. Same goes for ACER Predator (who names this stuff?)

Lenovo Legion Y530 looks decent but I m not sure if there will be a 1060 version coming out any time soon.

The last option will be building a Mini ITX PC with Ghost Louqe S1. What I have in mind. (GTX 1080, SF 600, 16 GB RAM, ROG Mini ITX Motherboard, I5 8600K, Noctua Cooler, Samsung M.2 OR RYZEN 2 CPU with a Different Motherboard)

I will be using this PC for 3Ds Max, Substance Painter/ Designer, UE4, Marmoset Toolbag 3, ZBrush etc.

    Any suggestions?

Thank you for your time and help.

    Docking Stations

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 05:23 AM PDT

I had two DisplayLink docking stations last, respectively, three weeks and two months.

Very rarely do I break electronics equipment, but now that I'm digging through reviews I'm seeing a ton of comments about poor quality on various models beyond the particular ones I used. Anyone else have similar experiences? The weird part is that neither was completely dead, but both would function with random ports, changing when I plugged and unplugged.

For my third station I bit the bullet and went with a Thunderbolt dock; hopefully this resolves things going forward.

What are you using, r/laptop peeps?

Any Laptops with Intel Core i7 8559u processor?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 11:15 PM PDT

The title pretty much says it all. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there are any laptops or better yet, 2-in-1s that use the new Intel Core i7 8559u processor. It has a real jump in processor power from the standard ultralight series and has more processing power than the upper end Intel/AMD hybrid Intel Core i7 8809G (which, for that matter, I've yet to find in a laptop either as they tend to use the little brother of that chip, the 8705G, which is lower on processing power again, though still a fair jump higher than the Core i7 8550u.

I was originally thinking of purchasing the Lenovo Yoga 730 but this awesome Reddit suggested the HP Spectre x360 15T with the above mentioned Core i7 8705G hybrid chip with the AMD graphics and much better power management as a result. I also looked at an outlet version of the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 with the same chip but I found out that, sadly, one cannot upgrade the RAM like you can with the HP as Dell hard soldered it on (grrrr). Are there any other better options for that type of computer at this point? I was hoping for perhaps the 8559u chip as mentioned above but so far, the only laptop I've seen that uses that chip is the new Macbook Pro, which isn't what I'm looking for. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this chip in any other laptops or any other similar options. Thanks in advance!

So I have an old Toshiba laptop and the battery light will stay on a couple seconds and turn off immediately after. Obviously the battery is dead. But what’s happening? Laptop still powers on though.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 07:17 PM PDT

Is the laptop stopping the battery from charging or did the battery short the charger, so even if I get a new battery will it be the same thing?

    Toshiba Satellite r15-s829

And before anyone asks why I still have the laptop it has Linux now not Windows 7.

Is there any common problems I should expect from owning a laptop?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 04:36 PM PDT

I want to learn different program languages and want to buy a laptop. I will be using it tor basic programing and using it for casual media use. I'm thinking of getting a HP Pavilion x360 Convertible Laptop - 14t touch. How long can my laptop last? I heard that a laptop has an average life of 3 years is that true? Or can I make a laptop last over 5 years? Do pc laptops generally get slow with time? Is this common? How about viruses? Is this really common or can I get away without buying an anti virus subscription?
