    Looking for recommendations £1-1.5k UK

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 04:16 AM PDT

Hi all, i'm in the market for a new gaming laptop, weight is not an issue, but i'm kind of unsure what to go for. I was looking at the ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS, but a lot of the comments suggested there were quite a few heat issues with that and I was hoping for something that wouldn't necessarily require a cooling pad to keep up. Any recommendations?

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** £1.5k UK

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not at all

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** At least 15.6"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Gaming

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Looking at new AAA games at 60fpsish as high as possible

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Looking at ASUS ROG Strix GL702VS,

Need laptop suggestion for casual gaming & casual design/movie editing

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:30 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop for predominantly casual gaming & casual design over the 6 months I'm travelling overseas. I have a PC at home so the laptop doesn't need to be super powerful.

Not sure if anyone has experience with Metabox?

    Buying in Australia.

My budget is preferrably $1500 and below. I'm happy to go up to $1800 if it makes a significant difference.

I will be using Serato, Photoshop, Steam (playing Witcher, Skyrim, Dishonoured etc), considering getting Adobe Premiere. However I would not be running programs simultaneously.

    Prefer Windows 10 over iOS.

I have external hardrives so I can install/uninstall games as I play.

I would appreciate recommendations and advice to what is essential & what can be sacrificed when looking for new laptops for gaming/design.

France/UK laptop for gaming, travel ~€900

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:22 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: €900 ish preferably a bit cheaper. Am located in France but frequently in UK.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specifications most important, ideally looks good and professional ish - not a massive fan of classic gamer style (i.e loads of red and black). Battery life needs to be decent.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither are critical but not a brick - will be travelling with it in a backpack.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A but not small, is for gaming

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming as below

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Warhammer total war on high if possible. World of Warcraft on high

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchpad not a big issue as will probably use external. Keyboard needs to be decent. Build quality important as fairly clumsy

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have been considering the inspire 7 Newegg model here: https://www.newegg.com/global/fr/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834316435&ignorebbr=1

It's at the top of my budget but if you think it's a good choice then possible. I wouldn't be against dropping to a budget of €800 ish. Looking for best value that will last a few years.

    Thanks for helping

    Laptop for developing/multimedia - 1800€

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:19 AM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:** 1800€, Spain.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I don't need 2 in 1. It would be great a laptop with the best specifications for the money, but I prefer something that is great built and with amazing QC.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?** It's important. But I don't need something like the LG Gram. I just don't want a big chunky gaming laptop.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I prefer UNIX (MacOS/Linux), but I can handle Windows.

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13'' min, 15'' max.

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I desire to run plain text editors, IDEs, VMs, and maybe some photo editing suites.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming, thank you.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I need a good keyboard, amazing build quality, no touch-screen, SSD, good battery life and a great screen.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Can a netbook/tablet run WarCraft 3 at max settings?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:19 AM PDT

I'm trying to get something silent as often I'll be using it at night, and lightweight as I'll also be taking it on the train.

Warcraft 3 was just updated to deprecate my old 1005px Netbook, so I'm looking for an inexpensive replacement as well as a device to sling around with me on the go.

I'm mostly wondering if anyone has experience with a z8350 and if it's good enough for Warcraft 3.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 150-300 euros, Germany

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Hybrid would be nice, netbook would be good too as long as they're silent, battery life needs to get at least 5 hours of solid usage.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important; it'll be lugged around a lot.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not too fussed about this one.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Warcraft 3 and probably Diablo 3 or Torchlight.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Warcraft 3 at high settings, full screen resolution (whatever the device uses) at 20FPS minimum

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Must have a physical keyboard and multi-gesture trackpad

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Really don't care about other games. I have a MacBook Pro at home which would get that job done if only it ran Windows. If I have the gaming itch at home, I've got 2 kids and a PS4.

Please help a college student pick a cheap, sturdy laptop for his educational success (hit me up with the best tips you got, please)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 08:31 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    700-800 USD, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specifications for the money is the top priority but having good battery life that can last for at least 8 hours would be great too.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness about 60% important. It would probably be in my backpack if I brought it to school.(I could put up with the weight if the pros (+) outweighs the compromise of having a heavier laptop. Although I'd probably be walking from here to there in college so probably considering that.)

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows, please.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Not really doing CAD/video editing stuff. Most likely a lot of research, browser usage, and some light apps. MS Office, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't really game anymore although I could play League at very low settings so probably just any laptop with generic graphics would be fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not much really, just hit me up with the best laptop I could get within the price range probably (still unsure if I can go up a bit, probably just suggest what to do if anything).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd probably buy a laptop on sale day (most likely during Black Friday where deals the may have better deals?).

If you've got any more questions regarding how the laptop would be used or more specifics, please comment. Also suggest, suggest, suggest please! Helpmesurvivecollege.

    THANKS! :)

Sturdy professional laptop for a DJ? (1tb+)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:29 AM PDT

Hey folks, I'm looking for a laptop for my DJing (yes I know most DJs use Macs but I just don't like them tbh). I've been using a Toshiba Satellite for 5 years now but the performance is starting to dip so it's time to move on. I'm looking for reliable performance rather than lots of speed, as the laptop wont be used for gaming. I'm based in the UK.

    My requirements are:

    - 1tb space at least (overall)

    - 8gb ram

    - About £500 or lower

    Preferable:

    - Some SSD?

Thanks for any help in advance!

OMEN 15 2018 thin bezel idle Temperatures 50+oC

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:04 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I came into possession of an Omen 15 with 144hz display, g-sync, 8 series 6 core CPU, 1060MaxQ GPU, 8GB ram.

I am trying to figure out if I am having issues with my laptop as idle temperatures are hovering around 51oC when just browsing reddit and watching videos. The temperatures will inevitably slowly rise to around 60oC at which point the fans will kick in at full speed. The CPUs seems to be fine, but it appears that the GPU is getting hotter over time and because they share the same heat sink, it heats ups the CPU as well. The GPU for example right now is 56oC while the CPU is at 51oC.

This laptop does not use the integrated intel graphics card during low load items, the 1060 is in CONSTANT use and I have discovered this is just a feature.

My question is, to others who own this laptop, is what idle temps are you getting. Also to individuals that are knowledgable in this subject, would you recommend me asking Amazon to send me a new one as this product could be faulty somehow?

Is it worth waiting for the 2019 Dell's XPS 13 upgrade ?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:03 AM PDT

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I've narrowed it down to the 2018 Dell's XPS 13. Now I'm wondering if it's worth it to wait for the 2019 upgrade (if there's any). It'd suck if I got mine right and they release a new one (32 gigas of RAM ♥️ or a new CPU or a screen upgrade ...) in the next couple of months.

Please Help On Final Decision for 15 Inch Laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:23 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1700 USD (United States)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs and a decent battery life (at least 7 hours), can be 2-1 but I don't absolutely need it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Under 5 lbs. somewhat thin
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 probably
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would be running some light gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dota 2 (60+ fps), MHW
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality. Enough to go through 2 years of college and grad. school.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am just struggling to choose what I want. I see the pros and cons and I just can't choose. I have looked at the Dell XPS 15 (9570) and HP Spectre x360 (w/ Vega) as the main front runners. I can't decide between the better cpu in the dell, or the slightly better gpu in the spectre. The 2-1 factor can be there but does not have to be, I just want the best 15.6 inch laptop for me. I don't want a full gaming laptop. I want the battery to last through a day in college.

Macbook Pro User needing a new work laptop

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:44 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Under $2k preferably, USA *

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Battery life, memory, best specifications for the money

***How important is weight and thinness to you?** I'm use to a Macbook Pro so something similar to that

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows or Mac. I've never used the others

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Prefer 15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Security Cameras, Calendar, Streaming movies. Possibly some games

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

** Sims & maybe Overwatch. Not sure on FPS

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** -Keyboard & track pad comparable to older Macbook Pros preferred. Nothing is worse than a bad track pad!

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I currently have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) / 2 GHz Intel Core i7/ 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3/ Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB. The screen connection is going bad and I've run out of space so I'm thinking it's time to upgrade. I use it for work and fun. For work I'm mostly doing accounting/marketing/design work (Adobe Suite/short vids). As for fun it's mostly streaming movies, social media and lots of pictures/vids of my kids. I would like something I can play games on like Sims. Maybe even Overwatch so I can hang out with my husband ;-)

Anything I found comparable didn't seem too off in price of the Macbook Pro. I'm willing to switch, but it'd have to be a great price since I own a lot of Apple products. Would like something with a comparable keyboard/reliable track pad too. I really appreciate any input! Thank you! :)

Computer Science major looking for a slim gaming laptop that costs no more than $650

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:39 PM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

    -No more than $650. U.S.

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

-I dont mind touch screen, but I would rather not have one. Good battery life would be cool.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

-Thinness would be plus since I just sold my other "gaming" laptop that was bulky and was quite heavy.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    -Windows

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    -N/A

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

-Wanna do light/medium gaming. I also will be doing some coding but I doubt you need something that huge to run code for beginners

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

-Im gonna be mostly playing fortnite. I would like smooth gameplay with medium/high settings. Maybe every once in a while i'll play something that's not too graphically demanding, but its mainly just fortnite

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

-Like I said earlier, I don't want those bulky "gaming" laptops that make me feel/look like a virgin (No offence to those who love those type of laptops). I had the Dell Inspiron 15 7567 and it ran nicely but it was heavy to carry around and I wasn't too fond of the design. I just want something thats decently nice and thin. Also, a backlit keyboard would be needed.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

-I would consider anything thats a bit above of my price range.

And also, anything that will save me money will be much appreciated as well.

Thank you to all who took time out of their day to help a fellow redditor find the perfect laptop.

16GB RAM, dedicated 4GB graphic card, 1TB+256GB SSD, and a neat, light design seem pretty good for a >1000€ laptop. But even then, I wanted to check with someone else to make sure I was making the right decision. So what do you think, should I go for it?

    Laptop suggestion for Overwatch

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 04:23 PM PDT

I currently use a Surface Pro 3 for overwatch...it's quite laggy even when I set everything on low. So anyone know any affordable laptops that can run overwatch smoothly? (I don't really care if the resolution is low I just don't want the game to be laggy)

    • Total budget and country of purchase: affordable and US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life I guess

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Prefer it to be light but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Hope to run overwatch

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch and don't rly care about resolution I just want a smooth gameplay

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would this be a good laptop for college and gaming?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:29 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm not that good with computer information, but I wanted to ask if this would be a good laptop to have for college and some gaming on the side? I'll mainly be using it for college coursework, streaming movies, and playing a game or two like Final Fantasy 14 (MMORPG) or something like Fortnite or Grand Theft Auto V. Also, any pros and cons of this laptop? The reason I had my eyes on this one was because of Amazon's 5 monthly payments plan.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 and U.S

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Would not enjoy a 2 in 1. Just in need of the best specifications for running Ableton and Fruity Loops which takes around 800-900mb of CPU.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is what's required.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Just using DAWS. No heavy gaming or video editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thanks for the help, everyone.

Should I go for Xiaomi Notebook pro?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:15 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I really loves Xiaomi notebook pro designs, it's class and clean. I do also love the fact that the laptop is powerful with strong price/quality ratio.

But lately I ran into the Dell XPS and I can't really decide. Maybe there are others laptop that I could never see? (After i write this post i'm going to read this sub)

What I'd like : -Great look overall, great 15' screen -Good/very good battery -I´d like performance for the price (no chipset as gpu please) -Long lasting laptop, that's why a strong performance laptop would do the trick -I don't really mind about Customer service since I dont want to choose a laptop « because if it breaks, i can replace it quick ». However it's a nice bonus :) -Good keyboard and connectic -Quick and strong SSD

    Why:

-Some quick video editing, no big deal -Around 20 Opera/Google chrome tabs opened with Word, Spotify player running at once
-Casual gaming: going from Hearthstone to World of Warcraft and Two point hospital. Nothing huge like Battlefield or Call of Duty I don't wanna burn my pc down

I'd like strong performance pc because I want it to last few year without it running slow.

About price I'd put around 1100€ on the table

I still think Xiaomi notebook pro is the deal but maybe you have a surprise for me :) Thanks !!

TL;DR I'm going to buy Xiaomi notebook pro, maybe you have a better pc to show me for 1100€?
