Posted: 24 Sep 2018 07:51 PM PDT I hear a lot of people saying to avoid the $999 XPS 15. Is this just because it is slower? I also believe it doesn't have the same quality graphics card that the next step up has. I'm a complete noob with laptops and just want to make sure I get the best deal. I don't do a lot of crazy things with laptops. I just want one with a nice screen that is relatively fast. I mainly just watch football and youtube videos. Maybe the occasional MTGO draft 😎 [link] [comments] |

Looking for a fairly lightweight laptop for photo editing and note taking Posted: 25 Sep 2018 12:15 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:** CAD2600, but willing to go up to CAD3000 if absolutely necessary. Being bought in Canada **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 form factor and best specs for the money **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I have back issues so I would like to keep weight on the lower end (not more than around 2kg) **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13 - 15 inches **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Lots of photo editing in Adobe Lightroom Classic, and a fair bit in Photoshop too, but, rarely any video editing in premiere. Will need to run some virtual machines, but that won't be too often either. Very light gaming. **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** NBA2K and FIFA at 60 fps on low to medium settings **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build quality and pen input. **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Looking to replace a 4 year old HP Pavilion TS 15, to start 4 year computer science program. It will be my sole computer for the next 4 or so years, so hopefully the specs are fairly future proof. Never had a computer with a screen above 768p, so I'm not sure how significant the jump from 1080p to 2k or 4k is. Also not sure how necessary a dedicated graphics card would be for me in future. Need a light laptop for word processing on the go, UK, £300 - £400, under 15 in. Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and ability to handle word processing is key, ability to handle a lot of tabs would be good. How important is weight and thinness to you? Low weight is very important, as I would be using the machine while on the move from coffee shop to library to office to home. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ideally below 14 in if possible. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No heavy duty programmes needed, just word processing, occasional EXCEL with large data sets, Tweetdeck, and Netflix. I currently have an old Dell Inspiron i3 from a few years back that did the job but would definitely want something faster / more portable. I will be using this laptop for everyday work in running my businesses. I occasionally use Photoshop, Illustrator, and a 3D CAD program Solidworks. Trying to keep it under $1000 for the new laptop. Some features I would prefer to have:
Seeking help for recommendations on what specs I should look out for storage, processors, etc. If anyone has some advice on laptops I should purchase, brands, or specs I should look out for please let me know. I saw some laptops on Costco and looked to be a good deal. Thank you in advance [link] [comments] |
Light device with active pen that can do light gaming Posted: 24 Sep 2018 05:24 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $850USD, US * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 is optional, but I need at least 6-7hrs of battery in energy saving mode. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Both 8/10 * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows, I can install Linux myself if I want * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Not bigger than 15" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I want to do light gaming and some sketches * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** World of Warships, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, both at 60FPS. My Dell E6520 with NVIDIA NVS4200M does it at 50~55FPS. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Active Pen support is a must. Finger print reader or face recognition would be pretty nice but not really needed. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'm a Japanese language teacher(reason for pen support), Im on the go every day and I would like to play 1 or 2hrs at the end of the day at home. I already have a potential option, the HP ENVY x360 13z(Ryzen)(the Ryzen 5 its going for $699 right now in HP's site) but I have read that it thermal throttles hard and doesn't have good battery life so I want to know if there are good alternatives. Also, I know that my budget might be on the cheaper side for my requirements but I can wait for black friday deals and if needed I can fork a bit more money. [link] [comments] |

Looking for laptop 13in-15in, budget of 1800-2000 Euros, NL Posted: 25 Sep 2018 01:31 AM PDT Hi all! I'm in the Netherlands, looking to buy a laptop that will last me at least a few years. 13 to 15 inches in screen size would be ideal. In terms of budget I'm willing to spend around 1800-2000 Euros. I'm open to a Mac but I feel I can get more bang for my buck with a windows. In terms of specs I don't expect to game much on it (but it would be nice if it could run lower resolution games), but I do want to be able to run intensive programs like Ableton Live, a few DJing programs, maybe some Adobe suite. Edit: questionnaire: * Total budget and country of purchase: 1800-2000 euros, Netherlands

Posted: 25 Sep 2018 12:25 AM PDT Hey guys, I'm a junior in Computer Science and I'm thinking of switching to MBP. I've been using my 15 inch HP laptop for 5 years and I think I need a new one. I'm thinking of getting either a MBP 2018 13 inch with 512 gb and 16gb ram or the 15 inch base model. Now I know that the 15 inch is a lot more powerful and the discreet gpu is fantastic, however the 13 inch is a lot more portable. Also I saw a deal on B&H that sells a MBP 15 base model with 2100$ tax free, whereas the MBP 13 inch from apple is around 2200$ tax included, but they give out a free beats headphone. Which one do you guys thing is the greater deal and more suitable for coding and college stuff? [link] [comments] |
Please Suggest a business style lap top for a student Posted: 24 Sep 2018 08:34 PM PDT Reddit, PLEASE HELP. I have been researching for 3 weeks and have not made a single decision. I'm getting confused at this point and don't even know what to look for anymore \ **Total budget and country of purchase:*** CANADA - 1500 CAD max budget but that MUST include Microsoft Office \ **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? At what settings and FPS do you want?*** No gaming \ **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*** I require: a numpad on my keyboard, a back-lit keyboard and the keyboard must have food tactile feedback. I would like an HDMI Port. I am moving for 8 months to a house with no cable or internet and I would like to be able to download Netflix then HDMI to the TV. this is a WANT not a need though. reliable build quality is preferred for constant travel quick startup speed so I don't have dick around at a clients office waiting for my computer to boot up my last processor was an i3 2310 and it is too slow for me. any improvements on that and I would be happy \ **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** -fill here, remove dashes-* Id like something sexier than a clunky Lenovo Thinkpad if possible, unless there is a Thinkpad out there that doesn't feel like a brick. Can you recommand a HP laptop? Posted: 24 Sep 2018 08:14 PM PDT My manager approved my request for a laptop. I can only purchase a HP laptop since we got an account with HP. I need a laptop for web(ASP.Net MVC), desktop (Winform/WPF) .Net programming. I run Visual Studio 2017 w/Resharper, MS SQL 2018, Visual Studio Code and some third party libraries. My current work laptop is i7-7500U, 8 GB RAM and 256GB SSD. This is the first company that I work for that use HP. All my work laptop have been Dell so I'm more familiar with Dell's workstation type laptop than HP. Can you suggest a HP laptop? My approved budget is $2500. Thanks [link] [comments] |

TL;DR- my dad is still using a 10+ year old laptop with XP on it. The only reason he wants a new one is Firefox isn't updating anymore and it's causing problems. I need something that will last. My dad is an engineer. He keeps stuff until it wears out, then fixes it until it completely dies. Example- there is a glass my dad likes that he likes the base of. It's cracked, so he used some weird orange tape and maybe glue to keep using it. He did that with a mug, too since he liked the way the handle allowed all his fingers to lay completely on the mug. It's kind of ridiculous. His current laptop is 10+ years old and is running XP. It's super slow, yet he deals with it. His reasoning for a new computer it that Firefox wasn't supporting XP anymore and I think it's causing issues. So, I'd really like to find him another laptop that will last him many more years as upgrading isn't something he cares about in the long run. Loooking for an HDD one or the combo with HDD for data and SSD for programs since at least if the HDD dies in 8 years, we should still be able to recover data. Please steer me in the right direction. I'm pretty overwhelmed. Thank you! Edit- what about this one? [link] [comments] |

Help me choose between a few laptops for UE4 game dev Posted: 24 Sep 2018 04:19 PM PDT So I've decided I need to upgrade from my Lenovo Z50-70 to something that can better handle pretty demanding game development, as well as having a decent battery life, and ideally a little less strain on my back (weight). I've been choosing between a few models, which I'll post below. I know I want at least a 1050, 16gb ram, and an SSD. The other 'requirement' i have is that the laptop is as light as possible and also doesn't look like your traditional gaudy 'gamer' laptop. I'd like to keep it somewhat professional looking (Aero 15W and GS65 is about as 'gamery' as I feel comfortable with). My choices: Asus Zenbook UX550VE - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834235026&cm_re=asus_zenbook_ux550-_-34-235-026-_-Product I don't really need a 144hz screen, but the specs are undeniably better than the Zenbook. Price is much higher though which is a significant turnoff for me. This is probably my 'dream' one out of them all, but is also pretty significantly more expensive. Right now I'm leaning towards the Zenbook, because I think it'll handle unreal development pretty solidly and is the most wallet-friendly option, I also tend to trust the build quality of ASUS products (and I would like this to last a long time). If anybody has any alternative suggestions, though, I am not opposed. If anybody has any experience with the Zenbook UX550VE, please let me know how it's held up over time! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Going into my final year in college, want a nice laptop that can last me a couple years Posted: 24 Sep 2018 10:03 PM PDT
Best specs and good battery life. My current laptop is an i3 that I won in a scholarship my senior year of hs and I don't know how I managed to deal with its slowness and 4 hours battery life for so long
Somewhat, I'll be carrying it practically every day. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
13"-17"
I'm into photoshop, may dabble in video editing someday

N/A Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm fine with an i5 processor with good RAM and storage. I've been thinking about the XPS 13 9370 but I realized it's very expensive ($1200) and it's going to come at least two weeks from now. If anyone knows anything that's good that I can buy right away at physical store that'd be great. I'm a math major that takes some programming classes (python, r, etc.) but since it's my last year I'm not too keen on a laptop that focuses on that. I'd prefer if it had an HDMI port as well since my current laptop has a mini HDMI port and ive broken the cord twice bc of how fragile and small the plug is. [link] [comments] |
Need help picking between the two Posted: 24 Sep 2018 09:57 PM PDT Hello all, My new piece of shit desktop crashed after week so I took this as a sign to return it and get a gaming pc. This will be my first gaming pc and I was looking for help from the experts here. I'll also be using it for basic home desktop. It will need to run apps for school/work and handle video streaming (amazon/espn on demand etc..) I have two options: First one: Dell Insprion 5680 - $600, intel hardware https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/desktops/gaming-desktop-intel/spd/inspiron-5680-gaming-desktop Second one: Dell Insprion 5680 , amd hardware, 760 https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-desktop-computers/inspiron-gaming-desktop/spd/inspiron-5680-gaming-desktop/ddcwblsk103h I'd like to be able to play some aaa titles (like battlefield, fallout etc,, open to some other recommendations), it doesn't have to be ultra settings but HD would be nice. How long would these last until I won't be able to play new titles? I'm also looking for something that's durable so will last a while (not sure if hardware difference- will some brands last longer) if I;m only using it for gaming/coding and low level apps. I'll also need it run MATLAB and some other software that's similar to that, but I think if it can handle gaming then it can handle that too. So between the two, which one is the best value? Which is best suited for what I'm looking for? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Best thin and light gaming laptop sub $2k? (Zephyrus S/GS65) Posted: 24 Sep 2018 03:57 PM PDT I'm looking for a solid thin and light gaming laptop that is under $2000 before tax. My current choices seem to be the MSI GS65 with gtx 1060, Razer blade 15 with gtx 1060 and 60hz display, or the new zephyrus s with gtx 1070. I am leaning towards the zephyrus s for the 1070 only because it has the best specs at the $1700-$1900 price point for thin gaming. My only gripe is reading about all of the issues that the zephyrus had (BSOD, speakers, battery inflation). The lack of TB3 and small battery is a bummer but not a game changer as the only thing I'd possibly use it for would be docking. The GS65 seems flimsy and only has a gtx 1060, but has rave reviews and the possibility of adding a second m.2, has Ethernet built in, and thunderbolt. It also looks much more professional. The Razer blade looks the most professional and has an extremely solid design, but for the same price as the Zephyrus S, it only has a 1060 and loses the 144hz screen. If anyone can give me some insight that would be great. It's hard to consider how important the jump from 1060-1070 and 60hz-144hz will be when I've not games on a PC in a long time. I will also be adding liquid metal to the GS65 if I do choose that. [link] [comments] |

Would love 4k for movie watching, but it is a lower priority. Smooth FPS (will cap at 60 on titles that let me) on high will be fine.
Also would prefer as close to a full keyboard as possible

Every model (g3,inspiron, pavilion) has a different issue. Help! Posted: 24 Sep 2018 09:25 PM PDT So I'm looking for a 1000$, 15 inch reliable laptop, with i7, ssd+hdd combination, and an nvidia graphics card. After some research, each potential model I looked at, had a review with a fatal flaw: Dell G3 - USB monitor driver issues - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/reviews/B07BXG7725/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_hist_4?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=four_star&pageNumber=1 Dell inspiron - wifi 5ghz issues - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/reviews/B077GT5RBV/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&pageNumber=1 Hp pavilion - locked to windows os - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/reviews/B07DQR6DQT/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&pageNumber=1 All the flaws I found just from one review though. Maybe someone can confirm that it is a non issue? Or do you know of a different model that checks all the boxes? Thanks! Edit: now I'm also looking at lenovo legion y530, what do you think?
