DSL modem needs resetting multiple times per day

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:57 PM PDT

    Hi there,

I live in a rural area and have a DSL connection. A month ago, both our router and modem died within a day of one another. We got new equipment and set it up. Ever since, the internet seems to go down at least 4-5 times a day. The only thing that will fix it (temporarily) is to power cycle the router/modem.

Can anyone provide some guidance on what might fix this? It's driving me nuts...

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

2.4ghz at 0.01mbps while 5ghz at regular speed on dual-band router

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:06 PM PDT

I bought a brand new dual-band router and ever since day 1 the 2.4ghz has been completely unusable. My laptop unfortunately doesn't even support 5ghz (great job Lenovo), and the wifi constantly drops (either goes to "no networks found", then a minute later reconnects, or straight out doesn't have connection despite being displayed as connected), and while it actually has a connection 80%+ of the time it remains at an unusable 0.01mbps. There has been nearly no issues with the 5ghz which my phone/MBP uses.

    Stuff I've tried:

    • Reset modem/router. Sometimes it might fix the speed for like a few minutes, then it's right back to being unusable. Other times not even resetting works
    • Use another older router to connect to another 2.4 ghz network that shares the same modem, still same issue
    • Test the speed by bringing my old laptop literally right next to router. This improves speed by a BIT, like maybe speed will go up to 0.8mbps instead of 0.01.... however I doubt this is an issue because I still see full signal bars in my room
    • Tried virtually every channel for the 2.4ghz
    • Bridged connection
    • Reset TCP/IP stack with Microsoft's tool
    • Not an issue with my laptop because same thing happens if I try connecting to 2.4ghz on phone or another computer

Anyone know how to fix this? Driving me completely insane. I don't want to start drilling holes in my walls to connect an eternet cable because the router downright refuses to work despite being new...

Is it possible to control a garage door motor without wifi with a phone.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 10:47 AM PDT

I have 3 garage motors for 3 doors, and 2 remotes for each, the guys who set up the remotes couldn't make it so that 1 remote can control all 3 motors(the remote does have 3 buttons) they could only make it so you control 2 motors with 1 remote. Is it possible to control the motors with a phone, is there some application like the universal peel remote for the TV.

    Advice for a new modem/router

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:16 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have very limited knowledge with technology.. However, I'd like to replace my modem & router that is about 7-8 years old due to the frequent disconnection with the internet at home. Currently using a Motorola Surfboard modem (unsure of model atm) and a Netgear router (unsure of model atm). I am currently paying for internet that is supposed to have up to 150mbps, but I highly doubt we are receiving that considering that my netflix shows would stop suddenly & load at a much lower quality.. I just want the best combination without any disconnections/drops in the internet.

I am living in a small 1 bedroom apartment, so I don't believe that placement with the modem is the issue with the bad internet-- they are in the middle of my apartment & they are propped high. We have 2 PS4's used for streaming & gaming, 2 alexa's, 3 computers, and a lot of cellular devices that frequently connect to my internet & possibly even more that I am unaware of. It's really aggravating when the online games we play lag about 75% of the time.

I am willing to spend up to $300 for both devices, however, I don't want to buy some top of the tier product that I don't really need. I tried to do some research on reddit, but I really don't understand the terms of people's explanation...

I have come across these recommendations:

    • ASUS Dual-Band 2x2 AC1300 Super-Fast Wifi 4-port Gigabit Router with MU-MIMO and USB 3.0 (RT-ACRH13)

    • ARRIS SURFboard SB6183-RB 16x4 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem

    • TP-Link AC1200 Smart WiFi Router - 5GHz Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Internet Router for Home(Archer C1200)

    •NETGEAR - Dual-Band N600 Router with 8 x 4 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem - Black

    • D-Link AC1200 Wireless WiFi Router – Smart Dual Band – Gigabit – MU-MIMO – High Power Antennas for Wide Coverage – Easy Setup – Parental Controls (DIR-842)

PS: I am not one to go in to adjust the settings on the modem/router, but if I have step by step instructions on how to maximize a modem/router by doing that-- I would consider it.. but I would prefer the easiest plug and connect device possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    5GHz channels and device compatibility

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:03 PM PDT

Background: I just got a fiber connection and am using the ISP-provided AP (SR515ac). Everything was fine for the first 3 days, but this morning some devices couldn't detect the 5GHz WiFi. Specifically, my Roku and 2013 Moto X couldn't find the signal, but my Macbook could connect just fine. All devices could see and connect to the 2.4 signal.

I managed to troubleshoot the issue by changing the channel that the 5ghz signal broadcast to use either of the 'ends' of the range - 36 or 149+. Apparently these are in the UNII-1 and UNII-3 ranges.

    https://www.maketecheasier.com/best-wifi-channel-for-5ghz-frequency/

My guess is that some new 5GHz signals came on nearby recently: a big fiber rollout is causing a lot of changes in the neighborhood. This probably caused the AP to move to a new channel (I think it was on 136 - in the UNII-2 range - when I started messing with it, but don't entirely recall).

    Anyway, my question:

Do some devices have trouble connecting specifically in the UNII-2 range? Have I got this correct, or am I fooling myself?

All of this is broadcasting at 80MHz, btw.

Can I use plug a PoE injector into a C7 Archer, so that all the ethernet cables that come out of it are PoE enabled?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 08:00 PM PDT

Note that I'm NOT trying to power the C7 Archer with the injector. I know that doesn't work. I just want to power the Cat5e cables that come out of it.

I have two Ubiquity APs that are connected to the C7 Archer. Rather than have to use a PoE injector on both APs separately, I want to just use one of the PoE injectors to plug into the C7 Archer for a cleaner setup. Is that okay, even though the C7 Archer isn't a PoE device? I'm afraid of pumping voltage into a device that's not expecting it and blowing it up.

Worth it to upgrade my router?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 07:05 PM PDT

When I was getting the internet hooked up at my new place, the installer mentioned that my router seemed a little older and that it might be underpowered. I didn't think too much of it at the time, but I passed a stack of shiny Nighthawk XR450s at Costco today and found myself tempted to pick one up.

    Currently, I have a Netgear R6200 hooked to a motorola SB6141 on a 250MBs connection.

I haven't noticed any problems with my current setup but I haven't had time to do a ton of streaming/gaming on wifi yet. My place is pretty compact so range hasn't been an issue at all. I only live with one other person so the "worst case scenario" for my network usage-wise is going to be a single 4k stream + an online game.

Do you think it's worth upgrading? Or am I just being blinded by the prospect of shiny new toys?

Which set up would be best?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:02 PM PDT

Currently have Mediacom home internet with their modem/router. Our house is only 1850 square feet but we have a couple spots on the outer edge that are weak signals at best. We aren't planning on keeping the house too much longer so I don't want to invest in a lot of Mediacom specific items. I was looking at either a mesh Network or just adding a single access point to the one area of the house that we really could use a better signal. Any pros/cons to either set up? Which would you recommend over the other? I've heard good and bad about each but I haven't been serious until now about pursuing something. Thanks.

When using my router in Bridge Mode, should I Obtain an IPv4 address automatically or specify an IPv4 address?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 01:56 PM PDT

I was thinking it'd be better to specify so I always know the IP. The only thing is I'm confused with the manual settings.

I was told to set the default gateway the same as my main router and set IPv4 as an IP within the DHCP of my main. I set it all up and wasn't able to log into my router.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

WiFi and bandwidth in between devices at home?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:52 PM PDT

So this is probably going to be a dumb question but I did look for answers first. I'm thinking about getting a NAS to stream movies and tv shows from my dvd collection to any devices across the house. One article I read says to make sure my router is high enough bandwidth to do that. Does the speed of my internet connection impact the speed at which I could stream movies from a NAS? Or would the router do all the streaming internally? Would I need to pay for faster internet if I was doing this a lot? Thanks.

Wifi says connected but nothing loads on any device.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:40 PM PDT

Hey all, I think I'm in the right place. I have little experience with networking so I'll try and explain it the best I can. I have a separate modem and router. Whenever I try and connect wirelessly to the internet it says I'm connected but nothing loads. The spectrum guy told me to see if I I could get a wired connection between modem and computer, so I tried. Worked flawlessly. So obviously something is wrong with the router, but I have no idea what. I've tried resetting both modem and router many times now and don't know what is wrong. My business is very dependent on internet so I can get buy with the wired connection for a while but would obviously like the wireless back. Thanks for your help

    AT&T Fiber speed issues

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:34 PM PDT

I just had AT&T gigabit fiber installed, and I'm really less than impressed with the speed. I am unable to hardwire my PC where it is located for now, and I am using a netgear A6100 usb wifi adapter. I got about a 36 mbps down on speedtest. Steam is updating my library at 7 mbps.

When I pull up the at&t router info, I am connected to the 2.4 ghz band, and have a strong wireless signal

I will be hardwiring in the future, but that will be a while, until I can finish some renovations. In the meantime suggestions? Is my wireless adapter throttling me?

Any downside in using a PoE injector?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 09:31 AM PDT

Is the Netgear BR500 poorly priced (relative to the Ubiquiti USG) or am I missing something?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 03:15 PM PDT

Today I discovered the existence of the Netgear BR500 (spec sheet PDF warning), a router which seems to offer approximately the same feature set as the Ubiquiti USG (spec sheet PDF warning) albeit with 2 extra LAN ports. It's good to see someone else in the US offer prosumer networking gear with cloud management, but the BR500 not only has a higher MSRP, right now the lowest price you find it for is $313. Compare that to $108 for the USG.

Is Netgear just totally spacing on pricing here, or is there some feature/advantage the BR500 offers that the USG doesn't? The extra LAN ports couldn't possibly be worth a nearly 3X price factor. Oh, and Netgear's VPN feature seems to require a subscription.

Is there a difference between "opening" a port and "forwarding" a port?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 06:52 AM PDT

I've got an ASUS RT-N66 router. I'm trying to "open" the following ports for Elder Scrolls Online.

    • TCP / UDP Ports 24100 through 24131
    • TCP / UDP Ports 24500 through 24507
    • TCP / UDP Ports 24300 through 24331
    • TCP Port 80
    • TCP Port 433

In my ASUS dashboard, I am in WAN>Port Forwarding.

The boxes I have available to fill in are:

    • Service Name
    • Source IP
    • Port range
    • Local IP
    • Local Port
    • Protocol

If I want to "open" the appropriate ports for my entire network, would I just fill in the port range (ex. "24100,24131") and then select the protocol, leaving the other boxes blank?

I'm confused by the semantics of this, but I didn't see anywhere in the Router Dashboard to just "open" ports.

Using second Ethernet port like a switch

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 02:13 PM PDT

Is there anything special I need to do to use the second Ethernet port on my ubuntu server as if it were a switch? Instead of running another Ethernet cable from the router, I'm hoping to connect my computer to the wired network by plugging an Ethernet cable into the server and then the server has the long run (in the walls) to the router.

Do I need to do anything special for this to work, or should it just work?

Windows firewall that can filter traffic based on application certificate

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 11:41 AM PDT

I'm looking for a firewall I can install on my windows pc that could also filter traffic based on whether it comes from an application signed with a trusted certificate. For example I want drop all connections but allow all traffic from apps signed with e.g. microsoft cert or other certs signed by a trusted ca. Even if it has only this feature and can't do anything else a firewall does would help me a lot.

Do you know of any with consumer price tag? Thanks.

Too many devices on a local network?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 11:26 AM PDT

I have an interesting problem with my home network. We have sketchy cell reception in the house, so wifi is the primary connectivity when we're home. What I've noticed is that, quite often, multiple user's cell phones have a hard time connecting to the internet. When I run a speedtest, and the device is connected, I typically get good performance (160/240Mbps). It seems like they have a hard time getting out. Is it possible that congestion on the local network is preventing them from connecting?

My home network is pretty complex. Right now I show 56 devices on Fing, including computers, printers, security cameras, Amazon Echo/Fire devices, access points, backups, etc. There are a total of 6 switches/routers. This is all on a single network. I've thought about separating the "browsing/streaming devices" from the "utility devices" by creating two separate networks. Do you think that would be a step in the right direction?

It's a bit daunting trying to troubleshoot this. Where would you even start?

    Thanks

Having issues playing For Honor with two xbox's on same network.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2018 05:16 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm currently having a recurring issue when me and my friend are playing For Honor at the same time. Whoever launches the game first is fine and can play without issue. However, the second person to join the game will be hit with a critical error 7-00000004 after playing for a little while. Both consoles are connected via ethernet, both have open NAT type, UPNP is turned on with all port forwarding and DMZ disabled. The router is a Zyxel VMG3925-B10B and we seem to be having no issues in other games. I have tried setting my console as the DMZ but it didn't stop the issue so I disabled it.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm at a loss as what to try next.

    Thanks.
