Microsoft Outlook app drains battery - Battery historian is awesome!

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:47 AM PDT

So, my mother's phone's battery had recently started draining pretty quickly - so, I obtained a bug report when it was at 9% and used Battery historian to analyze the bug report.

Found that "Userspace Wakelocks" kept the phone awake for 10 hours. Expanded that section and the first five entries were all Microsoft Outlook, which was the app keeping it awake for most of those 10 hours. Wonderful.

Uninstalled the app for now, will see if battery life improves.

    YSK about Google Gesture Search

    Posted: 27 Sep 2018 03:10 PM PDT

One of my absolute favorite apps on Android is Google Gesture Search.

From the Google Play Store Description:

Gesture Search lets you quickly access contacts, applications, settings, music and bookmarks on your Android device by drawing letters or numbers. It continuously refines search results as you add each gesture, and becomes better as it learns from your search history.

I have a lot of apps installed on my phone. (268, don't judge) The fastest way to access these is not the app drawer where I have to scroll and find the icon. Instead I can just start drawing the name.

Imagine if this was built more into android as a whole. It's not like they haven't had time. It's been around for EVER! First release and min API level is Eclair(API 7)! It's current target Lollipop and I can report that it's still working great on Oreo.

However, there are some issues. For sometime now the app has been unsearchable on the Play Store for new users. If they are given a direct link to the page it sometimes doesn't even let them download it. WHY??!! Additionally, with its last update being in 2015 it could be considered a dead app. This raises the question of why was this turned into abandonware just like another amazing Holo themed app, Google Goggles (RIP 😭) . The main idea of Goggles and I imagine the tech behind it are how we now have Google Lens.

Well I really don't have much else to say other than what do we need to do to get Google to make this relevant again or at least raise awareness. Finally, before you claim how bad it must be for not being updated in 3 years, I challenge you to try it and see how well it works out of the box with little to no setup. With the rise of gesture navigation it makes perfect sense to integrate gestures even further.
