Opinion : Nvidia should release a successor to the Shield Tablet K1 with their own SOC.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 04:21 AM PDT

Edit : I meant Nvidia or any other manufacturers should release a device with a new Nvidia SoC. Sorry for the wrong post title.

When it was released, it was one of the best tablets in the market. Price to performance ratio was good. Because of Nvidia Tegra K1 as SoC, gaming performance was a whole lot better even better than any iPads or Android tablets at the time. Sadly they were discontinued.

Edit : It doesn't have to be an Android tablet, Chromebooks with a new Tegra SoC would have been great too. They would have been better than the Intel ones in terms of graphics. They could have also competed with Intel and Qualcomm by selling it to other manufacturers often.

[DEV] I created my first non game app, It's an audiovisual retrowave themed app called Just Retrowave

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 12:04 PM PDT

    Hi!

The past week I've been working on a simple one touch mobile game when I came across an app called Just Rain. Inspired by that and with one night of no sleep I modified my game to make a relaxing audiovisual retrowave app.

The app features a few different options. Colours can be changed, clock and/or date can be added and a car can be added to the screen. The app also features a realistic looking CRT shader emulating both scanlines and screen bulge for that 80s aesthetic. I've tested the app and it ran great when I used it as a desk clock for a few hours. But of course I'd appreciate some more feedback.

The application was made using Corona SDK, foremost a game engine but some apps have been created with this framework too. I'd be happy to answer any questions and look forward to hearing any feedback!

The app is completely free (no ads) although there is a donate button if any one likes it enough to buy me a coffee. Link below:

Samsung's stubbornness with 4GB of storage for its wearables

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 10:08 AM PDT

With Samsung offering a phone with half a terabyte, it is frustrating to see the company continue to play cheapskate with its wearable devices.

    Galaxy Gear (2013): 4gb

    Gear S (2014): 4gb

    Gear S2 (2015): 4gb

    Gear S3 (2016): 4gb

    Gear Sport (2017): 4gb

    Gear IconX 2018 (2017): 4gb

    Galaxy Watch (2018): 4gb

Considering apps, software updates and offline music downloads, 4 gigabytes of storage is bread crumbs at best. Samsung has not upgraded the storage for its watches for FIVE years now. In comparison, the base Galaxy Note 9 has quadruple the storage of the Galaxy Note 3 from 2013. Come on Sammy, step your game up.

Edit: I run a lot, and all my music is stored offline. Another thing to note is advertised storage vs actually available storage. My Gear S2 only has 2.2gb free even after a factory reset.

    Removable batteries discussion

    Posted: 29 Sep 2018 01:00 PM PDT

I have always preferred phones with removable batteries so far, thinking that it will most certainly be the first component in a device to fail. I have even advised people in my circles to do so, until a recent event.

A family member of mine still uses a HTC DesireX. Recently, he wanted to replace his battery because of swelling. He bought two matching batteries from different sellers. The problem is, even though they were unopened/sealed packages of original batteries, they were not holding much charge. (I suppose they waited on a shelf for some time.)

This made me question myself. In the past, I have used nokia smartphones, and they were easy to replace with fresh batteries, since almost all nokias used the same battery type. Now with android, its all over the place. Is it even worth it to go for a removable battery device when you cant find a replacement a couple of years after you purchase it? What do you think/prefer?

PS. I realize this is not exactly fault of android OS, but I couldnt find a better place to ask. Hope you dont kick me to the curb.
