Weekly Discussion Thread... Affiliate Link Evasion Posted: 29 Aug 2018 05:16 PM PDT Hi guys, This post won't be up super long we'll have a new real discussion thread soon. But there is a ridiculous amount of affiliate link rule evading right now. Because of this we're going to have to take more drastic steps to stop people from breaking the rules. If you post to your own website that contains affiliate links without approval, you will be banned. If you post links to twitter that link to affiliate links, you will be banned. If you post links to videos with affiliate links you will be banned. This also isn't the subreddit to post laptop deals. A post just saying here's a good deal and linking an affiliate link is not acceptable. It's honestly pretty sad that it's come to this point, we're going to have to start banning more and more websites so you guys stop trying to get around the rules. It's not even that hard to get approval. Post good advice for a while, apply, and we'll get back to you. We want to ensure users are getting good advice and not advice that's going for a money grab. Laptop for College and Gaming (sometimes) Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:58 PM PDT Hi! I got a Sony Vaio Fit14e almost 5 years ago and it's time to say goodbye to my baby. It works well but I need a lighter laptop, mine it's really heavy to take it to uni, also is dying slowly. Total budget and country of purchase: 900 USD. Colombia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Good battery life and the best specifications How important is weight and thinness to you? The less, the better. Mine is 2.2 Kg ~4.5lb less than that please. Which OS do you require? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? I would like 14' but 15.6' it's okay Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? I use OrCAD and AutoCAD a lot and in the future I would use other simulation softwares (not sure yet which) but I want them to run smoothly. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just light gaming. The sims 4, all dlcs, high settings without. Also league of legends maybe 50 fps. RE games too. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? VGA would be good. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not Dell please. My current laptop specs: https://www.cnet.com/products/sony-vaio-fit-14e-svf14214cxb-14-core-i5-3337u-6-gb-ram-750-gb-hdd-qwerty/specs/ Thanks for you time! [link] [comments] |
I have XPS 13 that has major problems and want an XPS 13-like product without those problems. Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:22 AM PDT There are known problems with the XPS 13, and they have persisted through various generations of the laptop. The ones that I've struggled with are the wireless implementation and the noise in the audio. On top of that I've had truly brutal issues with system instability since almost day 1, with Windows crashing so frequently (commonly BSoD'ing within moments of logging in to Windows several restarts in a row and then BSoD'ing again later if I actually manage to start working on something) that I am now using my older desktop (still running an fx8120 cpu) whenever possible. I should have returned the laptop, I get that, but these problems are fairly common and I thought that Dell would figure things out and issue updates. I have downloaded many updates. I have not noticed any improvements. Is there a laptop manufacturer, well known or not, that make similarly portable and high-er performance products with great battery life, but are more stable? I would consider a Macbook if Apple were a less aggressively manipulative and sketchy company. I realize their products are generally quite good and I can do my research to avoid problems similar to what I've had with the XPS 13, but this is capitalism and I don't want my dollar to support them as a company (me buying used will push someone else to buy new at some point, probably soon for a high demand brand like Apple). My typical workflow is very ram and wifi intensive and I need to be able to stay away from an outlet for extended periods of time every once in a while, while also charging a phone with USB to provide an internet connection. The XPS 13 (with the 7500U) was basically the battery life king when I bought it (2 battery Lenovo's notwithstanding), but it has fallen very, very far short of my expectations. Something with literally twice the battery life (or more) would be welcome. I currently get away with using a power inverter to charge the laptop and phone from 12v a lot of the time, but that isn't always possible. To summarize, I want:
I don't need a specific model recommendation, but rather a direction to look. I'm not buying right now, but I would be paying at least 1000 (depending on what of the above I compromise on), but probably closer to 2000 Canadian Rubles. ...Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Yoga 730 (13) i5 vs Ideapad 720 (13) i7 Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:12 AM PDT
Hi guys, I'm trying to decide which laptop to buy. There's various discounts on Lenovo official website for these two laptops: Yoga 730 (13) i5-8250U 8GB RAM 256GB SSD (€849) Ideapad 720 (13) i7-8550U 8GB RAM 512GB SSD (€719) They both seem very good choices and having a hybrid PC isn't a must have for me. I'm just looking for a home laptop that will get things done and that will last a while. Mainly Office, browsing, Photoshop and some gaming. What I'm asking is: is a difference of €130 worth getting the Yoga even if it has a less powerful processor and less SSD? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a 2-in-1 with good pen input support Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:04 PM PDT
I have mainly looked at the HP Spectre and Envy x360, Lenovo Yoga 730, and Dell XPS. I've looked at too many configurations to remember which specific models/configs support an active pen, pen tilt, etc. A keyboard with good feeling would be nice to have. Decent speakers would be another nice thing to have I bought my brother an Envy x360 last month with the Ryzen 7 processor. I like it, but have been reading about issues with driver/screen issues and I don't know if that is resolved. In my configurations, I have also been looking towards the 4K screens, but doubt it would really make a difference. I would most likely want to run a Linux VM or two unless the subsystem for linux will suffice. I have a 2014 Macbook Pro (i5), home and a Thinkpad (i7) for work. It has been quite awhile since I have had to keep up with Windows prodcuts. Probably 6 years. When I was in charge of corporate resources, I used to get Dell Latitudes and then switched to HP Elitebooks. I have really never dealt with the different manufacturer consumer lines. Help me pick a laptop for both MIDI and 4K video editing ($3,000) Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:14 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm having issues deciding on a laptop. Once I find something, I run across posts that the computer has serious issues. My budget is around $2,500 to $3,000 but I can spend more if needed. MIDI - I want the lowest latency possible 4K Editing - I need it to be able to handle 4k editing. The above are the main two requirements for handling. - 4K screen is a plus - 100% RGB for illustrator is a plus I am a PC user and am hesitant to switch to Mac but can if that is the only good option. MSI issue I run across are bugs XPS issues I run across is crackling and possible issues with latency etc. I'm lost. What should I get? [link] [comments] |

What is the average graphics card to run games up to 2018? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:00 AM PDT As a soon to be uni student, I don't have enough money for a high end gaming laptop but I found one with a NVIDIA 950m graphics card that costs me around 450$. seeing how my budget is around 500$ this is perfect, but should I buy it? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:46 AM PDT Hi all, I've been looking at recommendations and reading through posts but apart from dell xps 15, which in person I didn't really like, I haven't found any other suggestions. What I need:
Not looking for a gaming laptop, although something more than an integrated gpu would be nice. Lightness and screen quality area top priorities, laptop would be used for: general stuff (movies, civ/hearthstone/nostalgia games); in workplace and for studying; photoshop and 3d editing. I really liked the Huawei Mateboob D, but apparently they shrunk the size from 15.6" to 14" and 14" seems a bit too small for me. [link] [comments] |

Windows Laptop for Photo Editing & Gaming £1500 budget Posted: 30 Aug 2018 02:53 AM PDT With a budget of £1500 I wanted to ask if anyone would have any recommendations for windows laptops for photo editing using photoshop and not serious gaming. I don't play games that often but I would like a good performance. I also plan on learning CGI soon so a laptop capable of handling the rendering of Cinema 4D would be helpful. [link] [comments] |

Laptop for light gaming and some CAD (Engineering Student) Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:42 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** The budget is up until 2000 CAD * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** That's a hard question, I don't really care about 2 in 1, good battery life is important and so is portability. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Very, my last laptop was a gaming one that weighed over 5lbs and that was a bit ridiculous, I would like something thin and under 3.5 lbs * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Don't care, needs to be able to run Microsoft office, solidworks, CATIA and AutoCAD though * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I would rather something with a smaller screen, again portability is important * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I would like to be able to run most of microsoft office and I will be doing some coding on it most likely. As for CADing I would like to be able to do a bit but I wouldn't need to render on there, I could just do it on my tower at home. But if it could do it without compromising portability, that would be awesome. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Ah the big question, I would like to be able to do some light gaming on games like League of Legends, stardew valley, FTL but nothing super demanding. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I would like a good build quality, ie a non plastic computer and I would potentially like it to have a Canadian Multilingual keyboard ( I know, I'm picky) but it wouldn't be a dealbreaker * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** As of now I have been looking at the HP Spectre, the Asus Zenbook 430, the Razer Blade Stealth and the Lenovo 720s, but I'm struggling to firgure out which is best [link] [comments] |
Need a new 1600 usd laptop for university Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:25 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1600 usd, buying from amazon * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Games include League of Legends, R6, PUBG, Black Ops 4 * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** None. Business Finance Student who needs a 13-14" laptop for $500-700 in the USA (midwest) Posted: 29 Aug 2018 09:20 PM PDT
The HP I have is the HP 15-ab292nr. Don't know why I didnt opt for a SSD 2-3 years ago as I realize the 5200rpm is a reason why the computer is slow at times, but nonetheless the battery is still an issue. [link] [comments] |

Hi! Looking for a Fast Multi-tasking for Work Laptop Posted: 29 Aug 2018 05:27 PM PDT I'm currently using a laptop dated 6 years ago and I think it's time to retire my good ol' Asus. I'm looking into HP, Lenovo, Dell, Asus and my budget would be around less than $400. My primary use for my laptop is for work on Zendesk, movies and some light casual gaming like pubg on low-medium specs. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Best Specs PLEASE! How important is weight and thinness to you? Please no more than 5lbs and be thin as possible! Which OS do you require? Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? Roughly 12 to 14 Inches wide please Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Zendesk, Netflix, Movies, Pubg Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, CD/DVD player, mediocre battery life is okay! [link] [comments] |

2 in 1 for a Traveling Music Teacher Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:54 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Roughly $600, willing to go up to $750 if the laptop is worth it. Country of purchase is the USA. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I' d prefer a 2 in 1 with a battery life that can survive a 3 hour music rehearsal. How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is a factor, as I intend to use it to view pdfs of music scores and marching band drill pages as I run around a football field yelling at trombones for being too loud. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 10 to 12 inches, or whichever screen size allows the closest emulation to holding actual printed scores on standard size paper(in landscape). Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would mostly be using the Microsoft suite software (Word, Excel, etc.), Sibelius music notation software, and Pyware drill software. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? NA Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? At least one USB port, and a touchscreen for the tablet mode with a stylus accessory. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a music educator that works with a few marching bands and travels often to teach. I'm looking for a 2 in 1 that I can use to display the music scores/marching drill for marching band. I would also like to use this in private lessons, as I have pdfs of method books, and I'm tired of lugging around 20 pounds of books everywhere. This will be the laptop I would want to bring as I travel, which is why I prefer a 2 in 1 laptop, as opposed to getting a tablet, so I can work on my projects away from home. I think it would also behoove me to get a weather resistant case for it, so if you can turn my head in the right direction for that I'd appreciate it! Any suggestions are appreciated, hopefully there is a laptop that fits my oddly specific needs. If such a miracle device exists, and it's outside my price range, I'd still appreciate the suggestion, so I know to start saving up for it. Thank you Reddit =) [link] [comments] |

VisionTek DUAL on old Inspiron laptop Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:24 AM PDT Hi, I have a six year old Dell inspiron 7520, with a AMD Radeon HD 7720M, i7 QM and I have put a Samsung 128 GB SSD extra in it. All in all, still a very smooth laptop. I bought a Dell u2715h monitor to have a better monitor. This monitor can go to 2560 x 1440, but my HDMI can only go to 2048x1152. I have two usb 3.0 ports, do you think a VisionTek DUAL can make this laptop run a 2560 x 1440 screen? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Every laptop seems to have faults I'm lost as to what to pick. Help! :( Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:05 PM PDT I've been doing my homework for about a month or two on a laptop purchase and I'm completely lost on what to get. Each week I change my mind as to which one to buy and just sit here idle not buying one. I currently have an older HP Spectre x360 (2-in-1 touch screen). Long story short it's got some hardware faults so I'm looking to move on.... In researching my laptops you have to spend a decent amount to get some good hardware. If I'm spending that amount I don't see why not to get a laptop with a dedicated GPU. In my opinion if you're spending over $1,000 it shouldn't be Intel HD Graphics only. I do enjoy the touch screen on my HP I currently have but it's not a need (more so a like). As for portability, it's either docked to my home office or in my work bag at my job. It's rarely off a power outlet except for an airplane trip. Anyways, the laptops I'm eyeballing... MSI GS65 - Great specs, horrible upgrade experience, questionable reliability, can be had at Best Buy for $1,999 but with an inferior HDD. The MSI brightness looked a little "bland" in comparison to others in store. Likely the lower brightness levels. Aero 15X - A better MSI GS65 but you'll pay more. However, real world reviews state how horrible the software is with multiple crashes and whatnot even AFTER a full format. This leads me to believe there's something hardware-wise or drive-wise that's at fault with this machine. Also not looking to really push beyond $2,000 if I can Dell XPS 9570 - 1050 Ti for $2,000 seems like a let-down. Thermal throttling seems to be the worst and no VR support for the future. I feel like Dell got lazy with fixing the thermals in a known faulty chassis and withholding a 1060 at least so not to trample on their Alienware brand. However, I can snag it with a 4K touch screen and given I don't go to hardcore with editing and whatnot this may still be the choice. I checked out the 9575 (2-in-1) in person in Best Buy. Awesome looking screen but no thanks to no USB-A ports and that mag-lev keyboard. Razor - Don't really personally care for it and seems overpriced. HP Omen - On a budget not bad specs but I've had horrible experience with my Spectre X360 so wasn't looking to go back to HP again. Plus, it looks a little ridiculous. ASUS - The ROG lines don't seem too bad but man they are heavy and have horrendous battery life. Lenovo Yogo - In general no gaming capabilities but the 920 looked good however has a monitor hardware fault posted all over reddit. SOOOOO....in short, they all have faults. What's there to get? Where do I draw the line? I like the MSI but I think the Aero is better. The Aero has reliability issues and is a bit overpriced. The Dell is likely the best bet but you're paying for the brand as it throttles like a mofo and lacks VR capabilities down the road. [link] [comments] |
