    Simple Questions - August 30, 2018

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Protip for installing windows on a new PC: Don't buy the USB from a Microsoft store

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 09:29 PM PDT

He guys, I recently built a new machine (thanks you all your help btw). A full clean build and I couldn't get my machine to install windows. After a lenthy time troubleshooting I found a post hidden deep on the internet that the Microsoft USB's are outdated and might have trouble with newer systems. Best thing to do is build your own bootable USB from the files right from the Microsoft website.

Live and learn, hopefully I'll save at least 1 person the trouble I had.

I finally built my first PC ever! thanks to the kind people in this sub

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:04 AM PDT

    Hello all,

After a lot of research and waiting quite a while for my motherboard order (3 weeks and a half), I've finally built my first PC two days ago. building process was longer than I expected but I am happy with the results. I haven't installed windows yet on it but I've been playing with the BIOS a bit.

    here are the main difficulties I faced;

    • the stock CPU fan screws didn't line up with the screw holes on the motherboard

    • I moved the ''front'' USB ports to the case on top, it really is difficult for the cables to reach the ports on the motherboard when looping in the back (I'm still unsure if I like it there and I might move it back to it's original position)

    • Next time I will probably plug in all the cable in the PSU, passing them through the appropriate holes and then secure PSU in the case. a bit hard to plug in the cables when the PSU is secured.

here are my specs from PC part picker; PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

"What do I need to upgrade?"

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:03 AM PDT

Because so many people ask, here's a quick "what do I need to upgrade" test you can do yourself to see where you should go for your next gaming upgrade.

To work out if you need a CPU or GPU upgrade, set your game to 720p low (this is assuming you play at higher settings).

If your frame rate increases, you need a GPU upgrade to maintain this increased framerate at a higher resolution and graphics setting.

If the framerate doesn't increase to a level that you find satisfactory, you will need a CPU upgrade with increased frequency.

If micro stuttering goes away, then you need more VRAM. If micro stuttering doesn't go away, you need more CPU threads.

If your HDD activity light is constantly flickering during stable game play areas, you need more RAM to reduce the paging requests.

16gb RAM or i7-8700k for photo editing?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:47 AM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my system. I do a lot of gaming and photo-editing. Currently, I have an i5-8600k and 8gb DDR4 2666 MHz. I can only afford to really upgrade one, which one do you think is a better investment?

My first PC build is done and it’s all thanks to your guys’ help

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:50 PM PDT

Thank you all so much for tolerating all of my simple, sometimes very stupid questions about pc building. I never thought I'd know the feeling of turning it on for the first time and seeing it light up and fans spin up. I'm extremely happy with the result, and it looks beautiful in my eyes.

As far as specs, I think I went a bit overboard

    Case: NZXT S340 Elite

    CPU: Ryzen 2700x

Mobo: Asus Crosshair VII Hero WiFi

    GPU: Asus ROG 1080

Memory: Corsair 16 GB 3000mHz kit

    Power Supply: Corsair RM 750x

Storage: 500 GB Samsung 860 Evo and 4 TB WD Blue

Also included is the NZXT Hue and internal usb hub up in the right corner. And I also splurged on some CableMod pro cables, and they really add quite a bit to the build overall.

    Alternatives to a GT1030?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:42 AM PDT

    Hi again,

My kid rig's graphic card died and needs a replacement. That computer runs a venerable Athlon X2 +5400 on a M2N68-AM PLUS mobo with 4GB RAM. The defunct card is an HD7700 who's been dutifully working until now...

I'm eyeing a GT1030 (GDDR5 version, of course) but I'd like to hear your suggestions. Budget is 100 euros max.

    Thanks a lot.

Is it worth spending $200 extra dollars on an IPS Panel instead of TN

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:01 AM PDT

Hi so I saw a really great deal for a 1440p 144hz TN monitor for $200 on Monoprice. However I have a 1090p IPS monitor currently and am wondering how much of a difference it would be downgrading to a TN monitor. Would an 1440p 144hz IPS monitor be worth 200 more than a 1440P 144hz TN monitor.

How can I best maximize airflow to my GPU?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:39 PM PDT

I just built a new machine and upgraded my 6600k to an 8700k.

I installed an AIO cooler (EVGA 240) and got a new case (phanteks p350x)

I have GTX 1070 that used to idle at 36C in my old case (NZXT S340) but is now idling around 55C in the new one. (Fan doesn't turn on until 60C but I would like to keep it like this)

In my old case, I had two fans pulling air in the front and an exhaust in the top and rear. It worked well.

In this phanteks case though, I had to mount my radiator in the front, so I have no air coming in that way. I turned the one fan it came with around in the back to use as an intake but it's not cutting it

    pictures

I'm not sure if I'm keeping the AIO cooler yet. I have a Noctua u12s coming in tomorrow that I may replace it with which would free up the front of my case for airflow

Is it toxic in any way to be physically close to your PC?

What motherboard would support my upgrades (listed below)?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:01 PM PDT

    Build Help:

As the PC Market gets cheaper, the temptation to upgrade grows stronger. I'm still rocking a GTX 760 SC and an i5-3570k.

I'm looking to upgrade to a GTX 1070 off of eBay and an R5 1600 off Amazon.

However, my current motherboard is the Z77-Extreme4 and I'm pretty sure that it won't support the above upgrades.

If it does, please do let me know. If it doesn't, what motherboard would you recommend? Also, I want to upgrade from 8GB ram to 16GB ram so please recommend your favorite RAM sticks to me if possible.

I appreciate any and all help. Thanks for your time!

Edit: Also!!! How large of a power supply would you recommend for these upgrades? I currently rock a 600W PS. Would overclocking the upgrades be possible with my PS as well?

Hello people, I would love some help with GPU upgrading

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:14 PM PDT

I currently have a 4gb 750ti in my system and it's getting a bit slow so I am looking for an upgrade. I've been looking at some 1070's in my general area but I don't really know what I'm looking for. Should I stay away from cards that have been used for mining? Is there anything else to look for? I have 330USD (3000SEK) to upgrade my GPU with. Help would be very appreciated.

    Cheap SSD vs HDD

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 02:34 PM PDT

Hey everybody, I just have a quick question I can't seem to find the answer to.

I recently got my first rig and I love it: i7 7700, gtx 1070, 1 TB HDD. It did not come with an SSD and I only had enough left to purchase a cheap one. I purchase a PNY CS900 120g. My question is: is a cheap SSD like the one I bought still preferable to a 7200 rpm HDD if I transfer my OS to it?

    Thank you for any replies

Advice on my budget build part list?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:19 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

**Hey guys, I've never built a PC before-just want some advice on my prospective build before I jump in. I have a case and fans from an old build my buddy gave me, so I didn't include those in the parts list.

This build is mostly for working and light gaming. I don't have any modern AAA games to run. The games I mostly play are listed below. Just wondering if I will get smooth performance with this setup.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Linux -CAD (Librecad, OpenSCad) -Web Browsing -Some light image editing (inkscape) -Light programming(python, Ruby)

    Windows/Steam -AOE2 -unmodded Skyrim -Borderlands 1&2 -Fallout

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $500-650

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Need help choosing a case! And looking for overall build opinions.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:13 PM PDT

I'm looking for a mATX case on the small side (but capable of fitting a full-size dual-slot GPU). I'd love some suggestions/anecdotes.

    Cases I'm considering:

    • Fractal Design Mini C (Highly recommended around reddit)
    • NZXT H400 (Front USB 3.1)
    • Cooler Master N200 (Mesh front, very important for cooling?)

Please let me know what you think of the rest of the build, especially anything that might be important to consider:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor $318.99 @ Walmart
    CPU Cooler CRYORIG - C7 40.5 CFM CPU Cooler $29.89 @ OutletPC
    Motherboard Asus - ROG STRIX Z370-G GAMING (WI-FI AC) Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $184.99 @ B&H
    Memory G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory $154.89 @ OutletPC
    Storage Samsung - 960 EVO 1TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive $289.99 @ Amazon
Storage Samsung - 860 Evo 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive Purchased For $0.00
Storage Seagate - Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Purchased For $0.00
Video Card EVGA - GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Classified ACX 2.0+ Video Card Purchased For $0.00
Power Supply EVGA - 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply $69.99 @ Amazon
Sound Card Asus - Xonar DGX 24-bit 96 KHz Sound Card Purchased For $0.00
    Total $1125.57

I'm not concerned with budget as long as the value is there. I don't plan on overclocking anything. Also, PCPP gave the following warning: "The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled." That brings it down to four usable SATA ports, but I only need two. Will it make a difference which ports I plug the devices into?

Finally can afford my first “big boy” pc. Is there anything I should change about my build before buying?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:48 PM PDT

I'm kinda new to building PCs and I finally have the funds to go all out but I want to do it right.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/M8mMMZ

I chose a smaller CPU because I figured it wouldn't bottleneck my GPU choice and the price for a i5-8400 seems really good right now.

I plan to use 2 1080p monitors and do gaming along side minor photo editing.

If there's anything I should change, I'd love the help!

    Thanks everyone!

AMD AM4 Mini-ITX Motherboards, any with M.2 on the FRONT/TOP?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:12 PM PDT

    Hi Folks,

So far all the AMD AM4 Mini-ITX Motherboards I've been seeing have the M.2 slot on the back/bottom of the boards.

Has anyone seen any with the M.@ on the front/top? And I mean where it has only one M.2 slot. I've seen some with 2x M.2 slots, but the front/top one, when it's used, takes PCIe lanes away from the only 16x PCIe on the board.

    Any ideas?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:44 AM PDT

Mostly I'll be using this for gaming purposes. I don't really do any video editing. Does this build look like it will be able to handle modern AAA games, etc?
