Looking To Buy A Gaming Laptop, Overwhelmed With Choice Tho, Pls Help

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:47 AM PDT

So I was previously looking to build a gaming pc around the £1000 price point however I have re-considered and am now going to go for a gaming laptop hopefully around a simmilar price point. After some research I've thought about the Acer Predator Helios 300 and the MSI GV62 8RE however I'm still not sure and I've come to Reddit for help.

The specs I am looking for are a GTX 1060 (Or maybe 1070) and Core I7 or Ryzen 7 For The CPU. The ram must atleast be 8GB however I'd prefer 16GB. Also, I am looking into purchasing a VR headset such as the Oculus Rift so I would be wanting something which would support VR. Some extra features I would apreciate but wouldn't absolutely require are a RGB back lit keyboard and a semi-decent display.

I know I'm asking for alot so I understand if the price goes upto £1200-£1400 ish however I am willing to pay more for better specs.

I'll be playing games such as Warframe, Overwatch, CS:GO, Battlefield and The Witcher.

Thanks so much for the help!!

Edit: Thanks for the help, would be appreciated if you can put a link in for the laptop you suggest

**Edit 2: Thanks Again. I've decided on three and would appreciate further comments to give recommendations on which may be the best. The Acer Predator Helios 300, MSI GV62 8RE-015 And the Dell G7 (I Don't have a link for that)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 02:29 PM PDT

I was looking to buy a laptop with a gtx 1060 that wasnt priced too high and I found the dell G7. The model I was looking at has the i7 gtx 1060(max q) 8g memory 256gb ssd and cost $1,030. The only thing is it is a little thick and heavy but I dont think its too big to take to school, etc But I just wanted to hear want anyone else thought about this and if its worth it or not and if there are any other suggestions, thanks.

    What laptop to buy

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:59 PM PDT

Idk what laptop to buy. I have watched so many yt videos and I am just lost on which one I need for what I am doing. I want to play games 1080p 60fps ultra settings(144fps on esports titles) but I want it to have really good thermals so the hardware lasts a while. I am planning on having this laptop for a while so something that is future proof would be nice as well. I would also like something with the new 8th gen 6 core CPU's. A high refresh panel with smaller bezels and a number pad would be nice but it is not a necessity nor is the trackpad or battery life. My budget is around 1600-1700 usd. If you could help me that would be awesome!

What are people’s suggestions for a 1070 max-q 15-inch laptop that has small bezels?

I was going to buy the gigabyte aero 15x but then got advised not to. Still the most likely option but just wondering what everyone else's opinion is.

Seeking a laptop that will last a while doing school work, art, and light gaming

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:59 AM PDT

Hi there! I just recently found this subreddit and maybe I can get good advice from the pros!

I'm looking to buy a laptop that will last me through college, currently a junior, until I start working in design and is easy to carry around! Good graphics is important as I plan on producing art with it and do some video stream as well. I also plan to work with some engines running at the same time, so I think a decent ram is important as well. I have a gaming pc at home and i don't think i will be playing a lot on the laptop. My old laptop is 8 years old, but is still going. It's getting slow and it is quite heavy to carry around (about 6lbs).

I'm currently torn between the mac series (since most of the people in my uni uses it, thinking of joining the fad) or the HP Spectre x360 -13t. Yes, I was drawn to the rose gold, but I don't mind the color at all! I just want an aesthetically pleasing and durable laptop for my future endeavors. Oh, I would also want to spend not more that $1300 on it! I am still a student, but I want to invest on something that I will use for a while.

    Thank you for reading!

I need help with choosing a laptop.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:43 PM PDT

Hi I'm a student and with the amount of money i have now, i can't afford a good laptop. All the laptops that i want to buy are way too expensive. I'm looking for something around 600 pounds, is reliable (i want to use it for 3 or more years), does the basic tasks like writing on word and such but has good graphics and a fast processor. I'm not gonna use it for gaming, not a lot anyway. I just want something that lasts a long time without breaking and is fast.

Still Looking - Need a Laptop for PDF Viewing and Editing

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:49 AM PDT

Had the Acer Aspire 15 w/ 8th Gen i5. Went through 5 - bad hinges - before Amazon finally refunded.

Purchased the HP Pavilion 15-cc611ds - has touchscreen, but the fan is loud. It constantly runs, and it's louder than my desktop. Even at slow speeds, the fan is audible because it has a high pitch.

This will be returned to Newegg.

I'm still looking for a laptop. I realize I don't really need backlit keyuboard, touchscreen. However, I do want something that doesn't make a lot of noise - fanless would be great.

I edit and read PDF, watch videos, audio chat. i5 8th gen is likely too much processor for those simple tasks.

Lenovo Yoga 720 15' is down to £849 until midnight, is it worth the purchase?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:48 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop for university. I want something that will be good for general use/note-taking but that also will be able to handle some gaming on games like Rainbow6 and Rocket league at 60fps. I have been looking at the Lenovo Yoga 720 15' and have been impressed by it. Today the price has dropped from £999 to £849 until midnight link and I am close to pulling the trigger.

Before I do is there any glaring reasons I shouldnt buy this laptop or any alternatives for the same price range (£1000 or less)?

    Laptop comparison??? [Specs]

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:47 AM PDT

    There are these 2 laptops:

    1 https://m.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/acer-aspire-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-8300h-1tb-hdd-128gb-ssd-12gb-ram-nvidia-gtx-1050/12568364

    2 https://m.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/asus-tuf-15-6-gaming-laptop-red-intel-core-i5-8300h-1tb-hdd-8gb-ram-nvidia-gtx-1050-windows-10/12616747

These both look similar besides the RAM and SSD... but why does one say the GFX card is 4GB and the other say 2GB? Plus... can I expand RAM on the ASUS?? I know Best Buy is inaccurate sometimes but what do you think I should get?

    Deals end today

    Thanks

Ryzen 5 2500U for developers (Linux support)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:09 AM PDT

Is this mobile cpu supported enough in professional applications, especially for Linux, such that I can consider it and not have to go for the toasty Intel 8th gen? I am planning to do mobile app development and I read that recently Android Studio added support for AMD processors, which removes a major hurdle.

Lenovo Yoga 730 (15) or Dell XPS 15 (not the 2 in 1 version)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:50 AM PDT

I've just arrived at college and have decided to sell my old laptop and get a new one that will preferably last me 4yrs. I think I have decided it will be 1 of these 2 models since they're both at the edge of my budget and both bring a lot to the table. I am a computer science and software engineering major, but I do like to dabble in 3d modelling and CAD.

The Yoga has a Labor Day Sale that lets me get a 1TB PCIE SSD and a 4k display with it, but I've read the battery life and the display are meh as the made the battery smaller and the screen has a max brightness of 300 nits and sucks on Adobe RGB. It also has an i7-8550u and a GTX 1050.

The Dell XPS 15 has a 1080p full Adobe RGB screen and comes with an i7-8750H and a GTX 1050 Ti (Max-Q). However, it's not a 2 in 1, its not a touchscreen, and the extended warranty adds 300$ to the price (which I will get since I want it to last 4yrs). It also has a 91Wh battery vs the Yoga's 51.5Wh. It comes with a 256GB PCIE SSD which I will have to live with until I could afford a bigger one.

I need something durable and powerful enough to handle basic CAD, programming, being carried in a backback, and preferably last me most of the day under a light load. I only intend to do light gaming on it (Minecraft, LOL, NMS?, etc) on occasion. I would like to take notes with it, which is what I'll do in my engineering classes (programming classes thus far have their own computers) and a couple others. I'm leaning towards the Yoga since it would probably be better suited for use in a variety of situations (sitting on a couch, in bed, in class) and would allow me to hand write notes too and then I could use it to take notes in Calculus using something like OneNote as well.

What do you guys think I should get that would fit my needs best?

Hidden damage in a laptop with a cracked case (x-post from /r/suggestalaptop)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:15 AM PDT

Hey. Lately I've been wondering, what damage could a laptop with a cracked case have, that would be difficult to find. I've come to the conclusion that it could be small water damage (e.g. only one port; obviously this is the case also for laptops with even perfect cases) or a small crack on the motherboard or some other component. Is there anything that benchmarking and quick internal inspection would not reveal?

Should I get the Acer Spin 5(SP513-52N-55LV) or the HP Pavillion (14-cd0008cu)?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:45 AM PDT

Which is the better laptop and which is the better buy?

The HP Pavillion is listed at $999.99

The specifications are: 14'' Intel Core I5-8250U @ 1.6 GHz Touchscreen 2-in1 laptop.

-8 GB Ram memory; 256 GB SSD

    -360 Degree Geared hinge

-Bluetooth 4.2, 3 usb ports, 1 HDMI port

For the Acer Spin 5 (it was originally priced at 999.99 but is on sale for 899.99 - and it comes with a stylus)

    Specs include:

-intel core I508250U Quad-core processor at 1.6 Hz

-8 GB memor, 256 GB SSD

    - Dual-torque hinge

    -13 hr batter life

-HDMI, Bluetoo 4.1, USB 3.0 port, USB type-c port.

I will be entering university, and I would like to have a laptop that is great at note-taking, great memory space, and able to function at a good speed when multi-tasking. I also do quite a bit of art in my spare-time (it would be nice to have a laptop that goes in tablet mode to sketch on). I'm not very knowledgeable about laptops, so I greatly appreciate any advice. I would be willing to pay for the HP if it is the superior laptop.

Is there a difference between the Vega 8 along the ryzen 2500u and the Vega 8 in a ryzen 3 2200g

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:30 AM PDT

Because the latter seems to be getting higher frames on a higher resolution and on higher settings (on YouTube) And I want to know if the cpu is the bottleneck, because Im not getting close to that performance.

    Conflicted on a new Laptop

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:29 AM PDT

So, long story short, my University sponsors an electronics purchase for some first-year students, and I have $1500 to work with (can add in up to $500). I do already have a baseline 13" MacBook which I like, but our family does need more machines, so I'll be giving that to my relative after I buy the new laptop.

    Now, onto the meat.

I'm looking for a fast, sleek, and well-built productivity machine for college use. I'm not going for tank-built stuff like a ThinkPad though. I'm a very careful person who takes care of my electronics. I have a gaming rig already, so that is not a priority. I will do some very light video editing however.

With education pricing, the 256GB 13" MacBook is $1450+tax, but I'm looking for a 15" MacBook for a similar price even if the laptop is a little older (but still new). Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 also looks attractive around my price point.

All in all, I'm simply looking for a sleek, no-frills, simple-to-use, but fast and reliable MacBook or a 2-in-1/laptop to serve as the portable productivity solution during my undergraduate years.

I saw this interesting option and wanted to know if there is anything wrong with buying something like this: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-macbook-pro-15-4-display-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-256gb-flash-storage-silver/8532502.p?skuId=8532502

Ultimately, I'm open to any suggestions, but it does have to be new or open box.

    Thank you all in advance!
