This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Here's a 1001$ Ryzen PC with Windows, Monitor and SSD that will play any Game at High Settings at 1080p+60FPS.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:13 AM PDT

Inspired by my 600$ Ryzen post,

i now present a list with a fully legal Windows license, a Monitor and SSD at the Magical 1001$ Mark. (Because people complained that my initial post wasnt a real, full PC setup, which is fair critisim.)

(Allthough this one also doesnt have a Mouse or Headset or Keyboard, you gotta take the cut somewhere, maybe i should also include the cost of a Ikea Table ? Or your Computer Seat ? Your House ?)

(Also i'd love to hear opinions on the Monitor and SSD as i pretty much picked them on gut feeling)

If you're wondering how it's gonna run just look YT benchmarks such as this one

If you have rougly 50-70$ more to spend

and dont care about supporting AMD and if you dont have a real use for 12 CPU Threads (Like 3D Rendering or Workstation Loads) then you can build a i5 8400 PC which will run slightly higher FPS in some Titles (5-10FPS more)

    Is a gtx 1060 6gb too powerful for a ryzen 3 1200?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 05:47 AM PDT

I'm planning on playing all games on 1080p 60fps high-ultra settings. I can get the cpu completely new for 55€ from a seller and the gpu for 220€ slightly used. I'm a little worried that in games i will lose a lot of frames because of bottlenecking. Would that be the case even in games like skyrim if i modded it like crazy?

BIOS not showing on monitor when turning on new build

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:50 AM PDT

I have just turned on my new build for the first time and not quite getting the results I expected. I'm using:

    Gigabyte B360M DS3H

    Geforce GTX 1060

    Intel Core i5 8400

    Cooler Master Masterwatt 550W

    AOC - G2460PF

The computer switches on when I bridge the + and - on the mobo, all the fans switch on and lights turn on, looks promising but then my GPU fan turns off after about 10 seconds and I've plugged a HDMI cable into my monitor and the BIOS doesn't show. This is my first build so I'm just following tutorials, I'm a bit confused on this one though, I don't know why it's not showing up and I don't know if the GPU fans should be turning off after a while?

    Question about Ethernet

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:59 AM PDT

I recently switched to the Altice One by Optimum, higher wifi speeds however I am no longer able to use ethernet for my PC as the router is not located in my room since it doubles as a cable box in the living room. Is there any way that I can still use ethernet without directly hooking it up to the router?

Troubleshooting: Reddit I'm having my worst nightamre

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:23 PM PDT

    Hi Reddit,

As the title says I'm having a crisis. I put together my new PC today and when I turned it on - Nothing. The red light on the mother indicates CPU is not detected or has failed. I'm pretty sure I followed all the instructions and I really hope I haven't broke anything. None of the pins look bent but they are so small I cant really be sure. I have taken the best pictures I can with my camera phone. Do you think I can RMA or did I break it? I'm in a real panic. This is a £2000 build. HELP

    Photos: https://imgur.com/gallery/KsDF5hU

    CPU: Intel i5 8600k Motherboard Z370 Gaming Pro RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB 3000MHz GPU: GTX 1080TI SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB PSU:Corsair TX650M 80 Plus Gold

Update: thanks for all the responses. I haven't been able to solve the problem so I've decided to return both the motherboard and the cpu. I purchased through amazon UK and they have accepted the return. I'll get a refund in 5 days and try again.

Bought a new cpu cooler, while installing I realized why the old one wasn’t doing its job

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 11:07 PM PDT

My PC was originally built by iBuyPower and I couldn't figure out why my CPU was reaching such high temps. The only logical thing I could think was I had a faulty Corsair H60 and after researching it seemed like many other people had cooling problems as well.

So I went out and bought a Noctua NH-U12S, used the old fans for case fans and installed it. Immediate better temps by 20c. But upon inspecting my case to make sure everything was running fine, I realized one of the now case fans that used to be connected to push/pull configuration on my H60 wasn't moving. I was so confused as I swear everything was plugged in. After further inspection I found the plug was zip tied to the rest of the wires, not even plugged in. I immediately facepalmed and realized all I had to do was plug in that fan and my temps would've been so much better...

Edit: read my original post (my last post) if you need context, also shoutout to the Noctua U12S

    Good cooler for i7-8700K?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:37 AM PDT

Going to be getting a serious upgrade soon. GTX 1080, 16GB DDR4 RAM, And an i7-8700k. But apparently the new Intel chips don't come with fans anymore. So what fan / cooling system should I be looking to get? I plan on possibly overclocking someday. Looking for good prices as well, nothing too over-the-top

Also, i7-8700k vs i5-8600k for gaming and possibly streaming and etc

Help me pick a gpu for my 49" Samsung gaming screen.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:46 AM PDT

So I am on the edge buying Samsung's gigantic 144hz, amd freesync 2 screen, C49HG90.

I currently own GTX 970, and I do believe that it will fullfill my expectations to some point, but I need a better card for this screen, right?

Anyway, I've been looking at gtx 1080 from Nvidias side, but for the dirst time I am considering an AMD card due to the freesync 2 integration in the monitor.

I do however not know whether or not I should get an AMD card or a Nvidia card (which probably would be 1080), would a medium tier AMD card be just as good with the freesync? Looking for all the advice I can get!

I'm 25 and have been dreaming of this for a long time. Been a console gamer sitting cross-legged on the floor my whole life, since the Sega Dreamcast days. Now I have a desk, chair, and awesome gaming PC that I worked to save up the money for and built myself.

Went after a high-end build that is just the right amount of over-the-top for my budget, in a small(er) case that looks really cool and runs relatively quiet and cool compared to my PS4.

I've had it for a couple days now, and I've worked out the kinks (incl. the mic problem I had). I plan on getting a VG278Q or equivalent, and maybe some more LEDs to make it pop more, and a secondary HDD at some point. Maybe some TridentZ RAM, too? When I get the funds anyway. I went for a green and black theme and I love it. Got a Matrix/Green Arrow/1337 hacker feel to it, haha.

    - Installing the CPU was SCARY. I felt like I broke it. I was scared and sad, kinda praying it'd post. It did.

    - The build took FOREVER. Several hours. I took my time, took breaks, watched videos, fiddled, and just kinda slowly got things going. I'm good with software and know a decent bit about computing, but I'm pretty bad with hands-on hardware

    - The CPU cooler was especially hard, but that was because of me. I thought it felt way too loose and kept messing with it and reinstalling it. Even tried using my mobo cutout, which made it worse. I also messed up by first install with the thermal paste on and ended up putting too much and having to clean it back off. The heatsink ends up stabilizing the whole thing really solidly.

    - The cables were hard as hell to plug into the mobo. Especially the CPU power. That was infuriating. The front panel was tedious. I think this was the most frustrating part. I have large hands in a tight space, had little light, and overall had a tough time with it. I was anxious and broken and what seemed like the simplest thing was just not simple at all.

    - My cable management is atrocious by your guys' standards. I need to revisit it and make it nicer.

I'm having so much fun right now. Playing all kinds of games and customizing.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I believe the CPU is not running as intended. When playing games the CPU does not seem to run at full capabilities creating a bottleneck that shouldn't exist. I will preface that some of the thermal paste on the cooler is not evenly distributed, due to me having to reseat the cooler multiple times for it to sit securely. This is the only real thing I think would be the cause of the problem. Perhaps my drivers aren't properly installed?

E.g. When running Witcher 3 at only 1080p ultra, I am only getting around 80fps when I should be getting much more. Moreover my modded Skyrim often struggles to get above 60fps despite the fact that the system can handle it.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Watch thermals, updated drivers?, updated ram speed to 3200

Best used nVidia GPU for $100?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:32 AM PDT

I'm trying to find the best used nVidia GPU for about $100. I'm upgrading from an AMD R7 370, so I would prefer to have at least better performance than that. I'm only considering nVidia because AMD dropped driver support for Windows 8.1 and AMD cards have poor performance (and sometimes no support) in 3D rendering applications. I'm primarily using Blender. Also, I only have a 500w power supply, and I'm only willing to go as old as Kepler (not interested in Thermi cards). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My first build-ready!... or am I? Dark Rock in an NZXT h200i

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:48 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I don't do any hardcore or graphically intense (?) gaming as of right now beyond League of Legends and PUBG but that's more because I've never had a proper computer so I'd like to start with this build. I'd also like to develop some interests and try video editing and streaming etc. That was my reason for choosing the Ryzen over Intel and the 2600x over the 2600 because I don't think I'll need the ability to overclock.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I don't need ultra settings across all games and so on but I would like to be able to play at at least 60fps 1080p on most current and arriving games for at least a couple years. I think the gpu I chose is good for that much at least though?

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I'd say 1,500 at the most but ideally i'd like to aim for around 1 - 1.2k. I do plan on buying whatever I can with rebate or bundles or on sale if they come up though.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

I'm currently in Korea so I'm keeping my eye out for any deals here but I'll probably be purchasing most of them in the US

I have the fans there because I think the h200i comes with 120mm x 2 fans (rear and top) but not any front fans? And I thought I'd move a stock fan to the bottom next to the psu and put the 120mm silent wing in its place.

The ram I just found the cheapest for 3200 but I don't mind minor differences in speeds. I'm more interested in the budget of the build than minor differences in speed. I don't really mind not having that extra 1%. Also, would a 550 watt psu be fine? A 450?

I do have a concern about the motherboard. There's a compatibility issue with the BIOS not being updated but this is my first build so I don't have a cpu other than the one I am buying. I've been told that I can buy it updated though so if anyone could confirm that thank you. Should I get a different motherboard?

    Any monitor recommendations?

GTX 1080 Internal vs Titan Xp in an enclosure

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:55 AM PDT

    Hi All,

My research group has the opportunity to get a new workstation. Due to complicated university bureaucracy conflicting with the best way to try and take advantage of the nVidia GPU grant program we are in a situation where we can choose between getting the workstation with a GTX 1080 (not a ti) in it internally, or getting a 'functional' internal GPU plus an external enclosure and putting a Titan Xp in it. The Titan is obviously the more powerful card but with the overhead of external latency and TB3 being equivalent to only PCIe 3.0 x4. Being a research group we're primarily interested in deep learning performance, but any experience/advice/suggestions/benchmarks/ideas/what-may-have-you will help in just working out if it's even a viable option.

I upgraded my internet service to 250 Mbps but am only able to get ~60 when wired to my router.

When I connect directly to the modem I get 250.

What kind of router do I need to get the full 250 Mbps with a wired connection?

    Parts List

I'm trying to keep the PC under 400, Its for light gaming such as League, Overwatch, Fortnite and other FPS/RPG games. I made a PC for myself earlier this year and got some great feedback from you guys, this one is for my younger brother and I still need to get some peripherals (monitor, keyboard). I'm here to get some feedback and see if you guys find anything that might prevent this build from working.
