What are your must have Linux apps ? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:04 AM PDT Okay guys, I'm a super dupee noob. I've just managed to install Ubuntu alongside my windows 10 after hours and HOURS of trying. Now that I have everything set up and working I want to have a super nice Linux. What do you guys consider must have apps? Can I have any kind of synergy with my android phone? Is there any way to reduce my laptop heating? (it's getting hotter than when I'm running windows) Thank youuuuu! [link] [comments] |

An online platform where I can use basic Linux commands. Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:09 PM PDT I am windows 7 user. I need to learn about basic commands of Linux(Ubuntu) and basic coding in bash for my college purpose. Is there any online platform where I can perform these actions without explicitly installing Ubuntu in my laptop? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 05:55 AM PDT I have a dual boot OS system on my laptop with a Windows 10 and Ubuntu. There are some problems with partitions and I need a bootable partition editor (on a USB) that is easy to use and uses GUI since this is the first time I am using Linux. I was suggested Gparted, but its website claims that the Gparted Live only works on x86 systems. Can someone suggest another free, easy to use alternative partition editor to Gparted? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:24 AM PDT I'm trying to install antergos on my laptop, and I found out that my wireless card's driver isn't included in the kernel. I found this and tried to follow it when I was on the live usb, https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/379049/realtek-wifi-driver-problem-in-linux-mint-18-2, but make keeps failing for some reason. I don't have an ethernet port on the laptop, and even if I did I wouldn't want to have to plug it in everywhere I go. Is there any way of somehow including this in the kernel my self, or any plans to include the driver in the next kernel update, because I could wait until then. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
KDE Connect - How to install plasma-browser-integration on Ubuntu 16.04? Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:02 PM PDT Hi. I'm using KDE Connect and it's really awesome. I want to integrate it with Firefox, but it says that the package 'plasma-browser-integration' is missing. I couldn't find a way to download it. I know you can compile from the source (https://github.com/KDE/plasma-browser-integration) but I don't know exactly what I should do. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2018 09:48 AM PDT Before I can commit to Linux, I need to verify that I'll be able to access my existing encrypted WD My Passport external hard drives from Linux. WD doesn't support Linux. So I created a USB flash drive with latest Linux Mint on it, and booted from that (live session with persistence). I can plug in an external drive and see it appear in devices. But I'm stuck on installing the particular GitHub project I need, https://github.com/KenMacD/wdpassport-utils There seems to be no install instructions, no spec on the directory structure needed (not much, I'm sure). It requires Python, I verified that Python is installed on the default Mint. The project doesn't seem to be available through Software Manager (not surprising, I guess). Do I just copy and paste text from that project to files in Mint ? Should the files be put in /usr/bin or something ? It says "Install the sg3_utils package for your distro.", which I assume has to be done through CLI, not Software Manager ? If there's a better way to do this, some other software to use, please tell me. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

[Touchpad] Cursor randomly jumps and can't be controlled - Acer E11 ES1-111M-C9LS Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:17 AM PDT It works normally sometimes, until it decides to jump randomly and I can't control it anymore, closing the lid and opening it again helps sometimes, but only for a little while. /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains: Using input driver 'synaptics' for 'SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad' I use Debian 9 with GNOME, it's up to date. Help fixing this would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

I have got the most things working out of the box and some others fairly easy e.g. the fingerprint scanner. Only I have not been able to got the transparant panels. Anybody knows how to get this? Help, I think I’ve bricked my laptop! Posted: 02 Aug 2018 11:20 PM PDT Just tried installing Xubuntu 18.04 on my Windows 7 laptop and the install failed giving an error about my hard drive. I can go to the 'try' mode and when I try to kick off the install there I get an error about ubi-partman failing. I think I done enough to remove Windows and Linux doesn't work so my laptop is effectively unusable bar trying Linux. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Problems with installing Deepin Posted: 03 Aug 2018 01:01 AM PDT Hello Community, this is my first post here. Please let me know if there is a better place for it. So I installed Deepin yesterday on my laptop, and it went well. Then I wanted to launch it, but after the first menu, where I selected Deepin, the window went black and there was only a small line in the top left corner which is often used in Terminals as a pointer. Every time I launch Deepin, this happens. Has anyone an Idea what could have gone wrong? Thanks in advance, Manuel [link] [comments] |
Noob: Basic question on distros/wifi drivers Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:58 AM PDT Hello all, I am getting into linux and a friend of mine said it took him hours just to get the internet working. As I do more research, I hear about more distros such as debian/arch being incredibly difficult for new users. I am wondering if most distros make you get wifi yourself or if it is just a complex distro thing. Can I run ubuntu or mint and still do this? Sorry if the wording is weird, I will clarify as needed [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Aug 2018 10:26 PM PDT Hi there. Non-native English speaker here. This is the first time I am using a Linux and I am a total non-techie. I am totally new and I am overwhelmed with the unfamiliar environment of Ubuntu and I can't find any resource or article to show me the steps one by one. I installed Windows 10 and then Ubuntu on a dual boot environment. I have a 1TB HDD and kept 500GB for Windows and kept the rest unallocated for Ubuntu during Windows installation. During Ubuntu installation I chose the automatic option since the customized option was full of codes and syntax. So during the Ubuntu installation something probably got messed up. Now, I would like to remove both Windows and Ubuntu and install Windows and Ubuntu again on a dual boot system. The Windows side would have 500GB with 400GB for my games and 100GB for the C drive. Ubuntu should have the rest 500 GB with 400 GB for personal data and media and the rest 100GB for the Ubuntu system partition. The Ubuntu side should be fully encrypted. Can someone please tell me how I can I delete both the Windows and Ubuntu and install a dual boot with an encrypted Ubuntu? [link] [comments] |

Wifi used to work, now doesn't. Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:57 AM PDT Ubuntu Mate 16.04. Atheros 5008 wireless card. Ath9k driver. So 4 months ago I had to switch to a wifi connection from ethernet. This worked just fine at the time and for various reasons I had to use Windows since then. Now I no longer need to but once I booted Linux I found that the wifi would not connect for some reason. I would click on my access point in the network list, it would sit there showing a spinning circle while it tried to connect and after a few seconds would fail with no error or any kind of feedback. First thing I checked was the password, all was ok. So I head to the internet with my phone. I discovered that Ubuntu variants had a random mac address function, disabled, still no luck. Then I followed a troubleshooting guide on the Ubuntu site. Wireless card is seen and recognized by Mate (Seemed obvious because I could see my access point but I checked anyway). The driver is installed and working. Everything seems to be in order then. Next I tried to manually connect with wpa_supplicant and this is where I finally found the issue. For some reason, authentication is failing. So I checked the password yet again, it is correct. In fact since I last connected 4 months ago nothing would have changed anywhere in my setup except for an extended use of Windows during that time. Somehow that has caused wifi to fail to authenticate and I have no idea what to do. My phone is connected just fine as does the Windows partition if I boot into it. Mate connected just fine 4 months ago. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Buying a Linux Laptop (Ubuntu) Posted: 02 Aug 2018 03:41 PM PDT First, I am not 100% sure where to post this but r/Linux didn't seem right, so I'm hoping here? Point me the right direction if this is wrong So, old laptop is on its knees. Going back to school in the fall, need a new laptop. Partner is a programmer and uses Linux, have had my ear talked off about FOSS. I am not a computer person so much anymore. Decide to switch to Linux for personal security and to support open source. Start looking for a laptop that's made for Linux, loaded with Ubuntu (partner's recommendation). Budget is minimum of 750, max of 1300, about 1k is the sweet spot. I'll be using it primarily for: Online Streaming of Video/Music/Files (YouTube, Spotify, etc etc) School work (Libre office basically) Web surfin (Firefox) Various document programs, pdf stuff, VPN (PIA), I value security so machines which are attentive to that are 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Recommendations? I've been looking around and am a little unsure of which way to go and would appreciate guidance Many thanks [link] [comments] |
Help dual booting Manjaro KDE + W10? Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:13 PM PDT So, I have 2 drives in this laptop. A SSD (my W10 drive) and a HDD (which I use for my apps and games.) , I shrunk the HDD by 50 gbs then booted into Manjaro Live through the USB drive. I then made a 41000 MiB partition, an 8500 MiB linuxswap partition, and a 500 MiB EFI partition. I don't know a ton about linux but the swap partition has the swap flag and the EFI partition has the esp flag each partition was also a GPT partiton I guess. Question about AMD gpus and blender compatibility Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:05 PM PDT Hi. Since the new releases of linux (mint and ubuntu) I have a strange problems with my Nvidia gtx1060. It's so hard to make it work for blender. In the past(mint18) I only needed to install Nvidia drivers through additional drivers window in order to get blender to work with cuda cores. Now I need to install not only Nvidia drivers, but cuda tools separately. I wouldn't complain if it was smooth and straightforward, but it's a pain in the ass process of trials and errors. Even install commands from Nvidia don't work as they should. So I'm thinking about dropping my 1060 and buying rx480. I keep hearing how modern AMD cards work out of the box with Linux. Anyone knows how well blender works with AMD cards? Despite not having cuda cores how do you set up blender to utilize GPU? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 18.04 ethernet connection doesn't work after sleep Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:05 PM PDT Usually, my LAN connections works as expected. However, if I don't use my laptop for a while and it becomes inactive/sleeps, when I start it again, the Ethernet connection won't connect at all. It keeps trying to connect, eventually giving me a 'connection activation failed' notification. When I restart my computer, everything goes back to normal. What should I do. I'll provide the specs you ask for [link] [comments] |
