    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Inverted ATX case mod build, 'Project Hades'

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:22 AM PDT

    Build photos

I started Project Hades to create something original and different with the Cooler Master MasterCase Maker 5. The case is already highly customisable, but I wanted to go even further. As a theme for the PC, Hades was the ancient Greek god of the underworld, a son of Titans and brother of Zeus and Poseidon. With the underworld theme in mind, my goal was to create an inverted ATX conversion, with a black and red paint job, custom detailing and various mods.

Build logs are on my website.

Weird question for the Masters of the Computer...

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:28 PM PDT

So to cut a sad long story short, I had a house fire a couple of days ago. Lost everything. the reason why I am here is because my psu (corsair 600w something I cannot remember) is what we believe caught the house on fire. I cleaned it every 6 months and had it for about 3 years. Any idea what could have happened? I just want to prevent the same thing from happening to the next one. When I can get a next one lol.

Edit:It was an EVGA 600 B1+ Bronze actually I misremembered.

    A few questions as well:

    • How's the 2400G for Photoshop? I've heard PS likes Intel CPUs, but is it usuable at least on Ryzen? 2400G is such good value I feel like it's be hard to replace with an Intel without raising the price
    • The SSD seems suspiciously cheap. Anyone know of anything wrong with it?
    • How's the case? I picked it because it's cheap and small (college housing so smaller is better). Anyone have experience with this case? Or have a recommendation for a cheap, preferably small case?

    Thanks!

A few notes about the build:

Anything marked as "$0.00" is a part I already had from an 8 year old build and wanted to keep around to minimize cost, though will almost certainly upgrade/replace at a later date when my bank account stops screaming at me.

I thought it might be valuable to walk through some of my thought/work process in putting this all together, as I've done nothing but read articles and benchmark postings and watch techy youtube videos about all of these components for the past month or so, and it was far from googling for a few minutes and clicking on the thing that looked the shiniest.

First off, I am by no means an expert in any of this, nor do I even consider myself particularly knowledgeable. This is just a longstanding hobby (built my own very modest rig almost 8 years ago and have always been a DIYer) that I've enjoyed pouring my time and attention into. I like to research the crap out of anything I'm putting money into and that I want to last for years, so my inner nerd was happy to have a slight obsession with all of this for a month or so. This is just me sharing thoughts and perspectives as a relative noob, not some self-proclaimed guru telling anyone else what they should do. I've benefited from so many great posts and builds here, so consider this my meager way of wanting to give back and hopefully help someone else along the way.

Monitor: One of the newest concepts my early research stumbled on was the Gsync/freesync monitor capabilities, which was brand new to me and seemed promising in practice. Actually, the very first part I bought was my monitor at a really good price for what a 27" Gsync 1440p 144hz typically goes for (coincidentally, just got back from BB picking it up and is the first part to arrive) so much of the build is centered around that, as I wanted to maximize compatibility and connectivity between components (Gsync only functions with Nvidia cards, freesync with AMD) so that was a useful starting point to actually start committing to things and not spend another week juggling pennies between the infinite possibilities, because I'd definitely still be there without having done so.

Regarding Gsync and its selling point - essentially it matches the monitor's frames to the GPU's output, reducing tearing and stutters especially in high-impact situations - was for buttery smooth gameplay even if not at not-constantly-god-tier FPS. Essentially, as someone relatively uninitiated to fancy graphics, I just wanted to cover all bases and ensure everything just always looked smooth. I'm used to playing Skyrim and some MMOs on slideshow mode in large groups or with enough dragons flying around, so that was a key feature for me that sparked the whole build. Like, don't tell me we're at 45fps, just make it look good. Best part is I bet I won't even notice it as I'm so used to such utterly garbage visuals.

GPU: This was the biggest and hardest (minds out of the gutter...) decision, as this is a central component to any gaming machine. I knew outright I wasn't going to spend $800 on a single part (the 1080ti) and really, really didn't need that much muscle for anything. I considered a 1070ti, but after a LOT of research and reading and benchmarks and videos, thought the 1080 was a nice sweet spot for my monitor. A 1440p 144hz has a lot of pixels to light up very quickly, so I didn't want to skimp and let my monitor buy go to waste. I'm confident the 1080 will do its job, and am certainly not expecting perfect 144fps play in heavy graphical environments. Grabbed it on sale (still is, I think!) for a skip under $500 (very similar price to most 1070tis I've seen) and am happy with that.

The hardest part after deciding on the 1080 was then narrowing down the dozens of options for specific makes/brands and their vastly different pricing (mostly, it seems, for different cooling/support packages). I was happy to go with the Gigabyte (which I'm told is the "budget brand" and more than fine with) as the Gaming variety's clock speeds seem to be about 5-6% over the base version, and again, the price was hard to beat for the card. Part of me (still) wishes I HODLed until the new line was announced/produced, but (again, thanks to YOU guys and your advice) also didn't want to just be GPU-less for who knows how long to save who knows how much and miss out on months of enjoyment. In the end, this was the most painful to settle on, but I'm happy with where it ended up in conjunction with the other parts.

CPU: As I'm building this mostly as a gaming rig, I wanted to maximize efficiency for price in that department - the overwhelming support/advice here was to stick with an i5-8600 or even 8400 (I've always used Intel) and that the extra cores/workload capacity of a Ryzen wouldn't do much towards that end. The i7 seemed total overkill for my goal, and I didn't want this to be a "top tier" build, just something in the sweet spot of performance for price. I also went with the "K" (paired with the "Z" MoBo later) to have the option to overclock down the road and not pigeonhole myself into stock performance for the next however many years.

CPU Cooler: I'll admit, I cheaped out here and went for the color more than the maximum endgame cooling capacity - I realize more beefy coolers exist and would be better. I've never OCed before, and am hesitant to even open that door, so I just wanted something that would look nice (black and red theme) and keep my i5 from melting. If I'm ever ready to dive into the OC world, I'll be sure to open that door with a more powerful (and expensive) cooler. As the K chip doesn't come with a stock fan, this seemed a good deal for the price in terms of just giving it a base amount of cooling for the time being.

MoBo: I was almost ready to get the Asrock Z370 Extreme4 as it came highly suggested and had brilliant reviews, but saw the EVGA on a steal of a sale (like half off) so made the rash decision to snag it on impulse and save nearly $100. I didn't need the RBG or fancy aesthetics of the Asrock, so I'm hoping this one will serve just as well in the end.

RAM: Lots of research here, which I'm now told was mostly fruitless as you can just OC the RAM into whatever, but I wanted to make a stable build with good parts, so I went with these, again on a slight sale. 3200 speed, CAS16 timing, and badass looking little red eye lights and I was sold, let alone at or near the lowest price for 16g I've seen.

Storage: I had the HDD and the 500g SSD already, and was planning on just keeping those. But the 1TB SSD went on sale the other night, and, again, I impulse bought one as it seemed wiser to start a new machine with a fresh OS (new to Windows 10) just to sate my paranoia that old drives with old stuff on them would ultimately slow me down. I'll keep the other two as storage, though I cannot imagine using 1TB of space and needing more at this point. Again, for the brand and size, the price was a steal and I couldn't pass it up.

Case: This one was also difficult, but mostly an aesthetics/looks thing. I thought the Meshify C had a cool looking front plate (because... it does) and liked the reviews so ended up with that even though it was around the $100 price point. I used some Amazon gift cards on that, hence my price of $30, but liked the look and the solid praises to its airflow and ease to build in. I wanted something I could keep for many upgrades/builds to come, and this case had the features and the look I felt would best provide that.

Case fans: The Meshify comes with two 120mm white fans - which honestly might be enough as an intake/exhaust. But I wanted to maximize cooling and longevity of my components, so got two extra 140mm fans for front intake and plan on putting a 120 in the rear exhaust and the other 120 on top to give a nice, clean, clear direction of airflow across the chassis. May be overkill, sure, but they were cheap and I'd rather have more fans needing to work less hard than hear two little dudes huffing and puffing constantly.

PSU: With a giant/beefy monitor, a 1080, and a moderately powerful CPU, one would think one needed some 1000W power supply... wrong. Even 550 would be overkill in my case, so the 650 (with the rebate included) made me feel more than safe with overhead even if clocking down the line. I just really don't see the point in anything more unless you're running some dual GPU/crazy setup, by which point you should have a better idea of what your power needs are. I went with a reputable brand known for its service, and a high rating over raw wattage and price.

Other: Had an old WiFi dongle I'll keep around (even though I route directly from ethernet into my current build) as well as a (crappy, old) keyboard and a (nice, but wireless) mouse that both do their job more than well enough to complain about. Buying a clean Win10 as I'm on 7 right now and hear support for that is drying up soon. Hesitant, as I haaaaate most of the new features, but wanted to stay current.

And that's it! The final price tag still makes me grimace a bit, but considering almost every component I found on a pretty significant sale, I likely saved a few hundred bucks just waiting for deals and price drops. For a really solid looking build that is powerful enough to handle anything current and likely in the next few years at max(ish) settings, I hope my choice to push towards the top of the line will reward me with several more years of competitive performance instead of going cheap today and needing upgrades in two years. Also, remind yourself, it includes everything but my desk and chair (and headphones/surge protector, if you really want to get specific) so as an all-inclusive price for a pretty competitive machine, I'm happy at the end of the day.

But MOST IMPORTANTLY: I wanted to say a big, heartfelt, sincere THANK YOU to this sub, all of its wonderful mods and members, and the freaking amazing community we have here. You alone helped a total noob put together and be happy with an entirely new pixeldragonkilling machine, and that's a beautiful thing. Keep doing you, and I hope you'll welcome your newest disciple with the same open arms you used to guide his poor, lost soul to ascendance.

I will absolutely post pictures on /r/battlestations when everything is put together if anyone is as interested as I am in how it will all look.

Now time to twiddle my thumbs until the rest of this build arrives... Minesweeper, anyone?

How well does the GTX 1050 hold up as a 1080p card?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 01:01 PM PDT

To summarize, I'm working on coming up with the blueprints for a PC for someone else (a build that contains a Ryzen 5 1600), and am trying to figure out if the GTX 1050 would be sufficient enough for their own use.

I've checked benchmarks, and it does seem like you can get around 40-50 FPS on some really demanding games at maximum settings, meaning that settings would have to be turned around. However, I've heard a lot of people say that the ideal 1080p 60 FPS card is the GTX 1060 6 GB, which is currently almost $300 and way above this person's budget.

Granted, this person has admitted that graphical detail isn't their priority, and they said they have quite a bit of fun with consoles, especially the PS4. I'm not really much of a gamer myself, but I do believe that a lot of PS4 games are about 30 FPS and have lower graphical settings than what PC ports are capable of handling, and I also believe that a lot of games have maximum settings that are merely meant to be future-proof and not necessarily intended for current hardware as of yet.

Long story short, this person is relying on me to pick out parts that fit in their $600 budget, and I really don't want to mislead them into a card that will not do the trick. I want them to be able to play just about any game at 60 FPS, even if they'll have to turn down a few things here and there. I'm really wondering if the GTX 1050 is sufficient enough to do the trick.

GeForce GTX 680 - fans blowing on high speed for some seconds (from time to time)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:01 PM PDT

    Hello folks,

I have a really annoying problem with my graphics card.

Currently I'm using a "MSI GeForce GTX 680 Twin Frozr III OC" and while it is really quite in desktop mode I have a problem while gaming.

The graphics card is realtive quite and from time to time the fans start to blow really loud on really high speed and are then quite again for some time only to repeat this behaviour again and again.

I have already cleared it from dust several times (not disassembled the fans) and I also have the latest, official drivers in use on the latest Windwos 10 version.

I have this problem since several months and are really, really eager´to solve this annoying mistery now! ;)

    Graphics Card Suggestions

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 01:19 PM PDT

    Hey Build A PC!

I recently built a computer for the first time in an itx case (The Node 202). It's been doing great, but now that I want to get into video editting I'm coming to realize I probably need to include a graphics card.

I plan on using Davinci Resolve (Beta) and Shotcut for now, but I will likely be using Premier and Photoshop/Lightroom in a year or two.

Given the demands of those programs, do you think I could get a good GPU that will serve me for many years to come under $400? The cheaper the better.

    Hi everyone!,

Hope you're all having a great week! So I have just purchased a new SSD this one to be exact (Kingston Technology SA400S37/120G SSD A400 120 GB Solid State Drive (2.5 Inch SATA 3) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N6JQS8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ZvXyBbC6B4BA4)

I have also purchased 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch mounting brackets too.

As the title suggests, I wish to use the SSD as a Windows 10 drive so it has windows 10 on it but not much else (due to size limitation) so I keep and play my games on my old 1TB HDD.

Can someone explain how I can achieve this? From what I have gathered online I have to create a Windows installation media, take out the HDD, and boot/install windows from the media onto the SSD. Is this correct? I am so a bit confused on how windows would be deleted from the HDD ?

    Thank you in advance,.

Sapphire RX 580 Nitro+ 8GB - One fan is not spinning

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 10:01 AM PDT

I recently built my first PC. I post tested outside of the case, and I'm 99% sure I saw both of my GPU fans spinning during this time. Built it inside of the case, and everything worked fine except I just noticed that one of the two fans on my GPU does not spin. I was using Sapphire Trixx when I noticed this. I used the "Fan Check", and it showed one of my fans failed the check, and I didn't see it spinning during the check. I set the GPU fans to fixed and moved it up to something like 70%, and did not see the one fan spinning.

Tonight I plan on disconnecting the GPU from everything and making sure I can spin it manually. Then reconnect everything, and try again. I'd also like to try reinstalling the graphics driver (currently using the most current), but am not quite sure how to do this.

Sapphire support just got back to me, and said to get in contact with who I am guessing is their manufacturer of fans to get a replacement fan unit from them. I've read that the Nitro+ has fans that you can replace without voiding the warranty.

I'm wondering if there are any other suggestions anyone has before I try to get a replacement fan unit.

Edit: They both suddenly work now. I have literally done nothing except turn my PC off last night and then turn it on when I got home from work. Fan Check spins both. No idea why it wasn't working yesterday.

Do you have a "Secondary PC?" If so, what are its specs, what is its story?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:07 AM PDT

Over the recent years as a college student, It has been convenient for me to have two desktops: one in my home, and one at my grandparent's house (I commute from there as it is far closer to school but stay at my "normal" home on the weekends.)

It's normal to have a nice gaming PC at home, but there's something fun and fulfilling about piecing together a ragtag assortment of parts to make your own "little PC that could." Dubbed "POS-1," or sometimes lovingly referred to as "Skidmark I," my slab of machinery rocks the finest of processors, nothing but the blazing fast Phenom II X4 B95, and for memory it brandishes 16GB of DDR3 in a 2GB/6GB/2GB/6GB configuration (all different speeds btw). For storage, a 500GB HDD provides ample room for high-res pictures of dogs. Graphics are powered by an Radeon R9 360 that I pulled from some Dell desktop, and the PCI slots are full of odd expansion cards like extra parallel slots and a 4-port USB 2.0 thing. All of this is encased in an HP case that I trash picked from my college and cleaned up. To achieve supreme audio fidelity, I bent a small PC speaker bracket and shoved the speaker into the case. My plans are to upgrade to a Phenom II X6 (Hexa-core adds 150HP.) And buy a little 1050ti for it or something... or maybe a GT 1030. So many possibilities when you waive common sense from the equation. It gets pretty warm when playing Cities Skylines, but you know, at least its trying. I plan to spray paint some flames on the case in the future.

What are your adventures concerning xTreme budget PC builds? I'm curious to see what people have as a backup.

    Music Production PC Build

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:10 PM PDT

Hi all, soon I'm going to build a PC. The build is mainly focused in music production with heavy plugins and i would like to be able to use 2 1080p monitors. Since it's my very first build i asked a friend of my brother's for an advice and he told me to get a msi z370 gaming plus (which costs 40€ more), a graphics card because intel's igpu won't handle 2 monitors and a better psu, even though I explicitly told him that I won't game on this pc. Should I leave my build as it is or should I change something? Thanks in advance.

Corsair CX Series 550 Watt 80 Plus Bronze Certified Non-Modular Power Supply - $50

EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING, ACX 2.0 (Single Fan), 6GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC) - $280

    Intel 8th Gen Core i3-8100 Processor - $120 Ryzen 5 2600 - $170

    Seagate 1TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive (ST1000DM010) - $44

    GIGABYTE H310M A (LGA1151/Intel/H310/Micro ATX/DDR4/HDMI 1.4/M.2/Motherboard) - $55

the subtotal right now is about $640 $870. Are there any changes I should do or any suggestions? I'm just trying to keep it as low as possible while having a good PC. Thank you!

Also, GPU prices are high right now due to the cryptocurrency hype but I see it has died down, so is there any idea when GPU prices will drop?

How is the cooler on the asus expedition rx 570?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 03:26 PM PDT

There are no real reviews, a few small posts in mining forums about hashrates with a modded bios. There were no reviews on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk, on amazon.de it had 3 reviews and those said nothing about temps or gaming. Is there anyone here who has the card or a card of the expedition series (to see how it compares to other series)?

    Ryzen 7 2700 or 2700X?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 03:17 PM PDT

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my rig, and I want to know if I should spend a little more on the Ryzen 7 2700X instead of getting the 2700. Is there a noticeable difference between the two?
