Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:22 PM PDT I installed Ubuntu and first thing I have noticed is the poor sound compared to w10, also it didn't recognize my AMD graphics card, is there any easy way to install all necessary drivers on Ubuntu? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:46 AM PDT I am completely new to Linux and decided to just tried running the desktop first from a USB before actually installing it. After messing around for a bit I decided to power down but got the following message "A start job is running for hold until boot process finishes up (21s/no limit)". After this message stayed up for a while I googled it on my phone and got answers telling me to press shift+esc but this didn't work so I panicked and like a complete idiot just pulled out the USB assuming that because it wasn't installed and just running off of it it would default back to windows (I know I'm an idiot) now the error message includes [ 1473.500164] USB usb2-port2: cannot disable (err = -32). Did I completely destroyed my computer?? Please help!!! I swear I wont mess around again [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:20 PM PDT Somehow dos2unix is an unknown command on my current machine. I was using a different computer the last few months for unix work via cygwin, and the cygwin I had installed there had dos2unix on it so I could covert files. I just tried again on the machine I'm on now, and it says "dos2unix: command not found". This machine is a couple years old and it was a long time ago since I installed cygwin on this one. I had no idea I couldn't dos2unix on this though, I don't know why it wouldn't have been automatically put in when I first installed, but somehow it's not there. Is there any way I can get just dos2unix, I do not want to have to re-install cygwin on my machine. I've looked at stackoverflow, and it just says run apt-get install dos2unix. Well, apt-get is an unknown command in my cygwin, too, and so is yum install. So those are the main proposed solutions online and they don't work for me, so I'm at a loss here. [link] [comments] |
What I did wrong trying to install linux on a HP 8710p laptop. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:17 PM PDT I found this salvaged laptop and got it back up and running. It has a dual core 1.8ghz processor, wifi, an SSD, and 4GB of ram. When I first put an OS on it, I started with Linux Mint and it worked great whether I used Mate or Cinnamon. wifi and everything. However, I wanted to try other distros so I started with CentOS (I know it is a server OS but still) and after 4 tries, I could not make it through 1 installation without a hangup. Next up, Solus budgie. Same thing. Now, I am using my HP Z800 to burn these CDs in ISO format with verbatum blank DVDs and cdburnerXP as the burning program. At first I used 16x speed but now I am using 12 plus post burn verification. I am looking for any ideas why nothing but Mint installs. Well, if your like me, never discount any possible issue. When burning a DVD, use a slower speed than max. If you downloaded the ISO direct, try a torrent. Make sure your burner verifies the info. Finalize the disk and make sure it is readable in most drives. If you use a USB, maybe try another one. Make sure it is big enough for some extra space on it. Is your laptop or desktop set for booting from USB or DVD? check BIOS settings. A bad disk or USB drive or image can all be the culprit. cdburnerXP and rufus are great programs for this sort of thing. So, if you have a ton of issues like me, start with the obvious and work your way through systematically. p.s. Solus looks great. I don't know what OS will run on this old laptop but I like having options. I may try centos again another time. [link] [comments] |
Best new convertible laptop for compatibility? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:35 AM PDT I am in need of a new laptop and want a convertible one with a touchscreen. If I were just going to run Windows, I would choose the HP Elitebook x360. But I want to dual-boot with Linux. I have dabbled with various distros over the last decade and I currently run Ubuntu on a desktop PC so I'm not a complete noob. I am aware of potential hardware compatibility issues and I want to get a laptop with the least number of them. Does anyone know how well Linux supports the x360? Ubuntu is preferred but I am willing to try other distros. If it isn't good, can anyone recommend a convertible laptop with high compatibility? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Any suggestions on what/where to go next? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:18 AM PDT Hello all, so I have been using Linux (Ubuntu > Fedora > Arch) for over one year now and I feel am an above average but stuck at that. Does anyone have any recommendations on things I could do to improve my skills? I am comfortable with installing any Linux distro, I know my way around the terminal and I can install applications from terminal ;). [link] [comments] |
Black screen when using discrete GPU Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:33 PM PDT Running Fedora 27 with ThinkPad T530. I can't boot using just the NVS 5400 graphics. I can get to the Kernel selection screen, after that, it is a black screen and the CPU fan gets loud. I tried installing the GPU driver when running Intel+NVS but issue persists. [link] [comments] |
Possible to disable the nib/pointing stick on Dell Latitude E5430 in Ubuntu Mate? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:24 PM PDT I'm a complete Linux noob having just installed Ubuntu Mate for the first time on a Dell Latitude E5430. My problem is that it has one of those nib/mouse pointer things between the G, H, and B keys and I keep accidentally hitting it and moving the mouse, which is annoying especially if I'm typing down near the bottom of the screen, as I'm using the Cupertino theme and mousing to the bottom of the screen brings up the dock (which covers up what I'm trying to type). I don't want to use the pointing stick for any purpose whatsoever so is there a way to just flat out disable it (aside from ripping it off lol)? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Aug 2018 10:25 PM PDT Hello, I am going to buy a laptop i5-8250u, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD Which distribution should I use? I like the look of Gnome3 but I heard It is very heavy and requires discrete GPU to run smoothly? My laptop have only igpu UHD620. KDE is too bloated for me. Haven't tried buggie but heard lot of good stuff about it. [link] [comments] |
Zorin (Ubuntu ) Actin' funny (logging out) Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:23 AM PDT Hi! I was out of the game for a while, just got back to computing and remembered that Zorin was pretty neat. So I installed it and wow, it's very polished and pretty compared to what it was a few years ago. It now reminds me of Netrunner mixed with Fedora. Anyway, the problem is that it randomly logs me out. This kills my many music downloads and chrome tabs or Netflix. It does not appear related to mouse inactivity or any time out based setting. Any ideas? I can't find anything to toggle beyond the ordinary power sleep settings, which I have set to 'never' Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Automate SDcard download-compress-store on multiple drives Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:10 AM PDT Hi I'm thinking of using Ubuntu to automate the process in the title. I'll go in more detail: I'm a part time photographer and videographer and my shoots take up a lot of space (biggest shoot had 500+Gb) and time to download from the SD card, I would like to know how to do the following process automatically 1) I stick the card in the reader 2) Ubuntu automatically copies all the files from said SD to a folder (let's say the path is like this "TodayDate > Card1") 3) Asks for another card or store&compress&store (not a typo) 4) In case of another card said said card in "TodayDate > Card 2" 5) In case of store&compress&Store: A) it has to copy all the TodayDate folder to my NAS 2)compress the folder that still is on the local drive 3)copy those compressed folders to 2 usb HardDrives. 6) I'll then delete all the local files. I'm fairly new to Linux but I'm a Junior developer waiting to make enough money to switch from developing to photo&video production and I realize this is the poor man's redundancy and backup strategy. I could do this myself if someone could provide some resources, I realize I could find the resources myself but the base problem here is I don't have the time to use the wrong resources till I find the right one (that's the usual process for me). Posted: 07 Aug 2018 07:09 PM PDT So I just attempted a dual boot installation of Ubuntu. The partitions worked fine, and the install media did it's job, but now when I boot up it just cuts to Windows, and doesn't give me an option to boot into Linux. The UEFI BIOS didn't even know there was two operating systems installed, the only boot option was just the one SSD that both systems are on. So how do I access my Linux installation? The partition shows up... EDIT: The Windows Boot Manager now comes up, but there is only one operating system available to boot from: Windows 7, not Ubuntu. EDIT #2: I tried reinstalling Budgie, and the installation media recognized that there was two operating systems on the disk. However, both the UEFI BIOS and Windows Boot Manager still fail to recognize that it even exists. I am extremely confused and could use some help suggestions. FINAL EDIT: I just deleted and re allocated the Ubuntu Partition, and it somehow worked this time around. No idea what I did exactly, but thank you for all the suggestions, and I'll use them in the future should this come up again. [link] [comments] |
