Having trouble deciding which laptop to buy for college. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:56 AM PDT I move away to college in a few weeks and am scrambling to find a good laptop. I'm stuck in between a MacBook Pro and a razer blade 15 (both around $2000). Any recommendations as to which one I should purchase? I'm looking to do some gaming in college but if a MacBook will last me longer I would be more inclined to buy that. [link] [comments]
Full GTX 1060 vs 1070 Max-Q - How big is the difference? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:21 PM PDT I'm currently deciding whether to get the GTX 1060 version of the new HP Omen 15, or the 1070-Max Q. I've heard that the 1070 isn't as good as the 1060 in eSports titles like Overwatch, which is probably what I'll play the most. However, I also don't want something that can't run other games well on high settings. I want to make use of the 144 Hz screen after all. Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
I need help finding a laptop for Antarctica! Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:45 AM PDT I'll be working in Antarctica for 5 months and I'm looking for a laptop to bring with me for internet/email. My budget is flexible but I already have a decent desktop computer as my main system, so I don't want to spend more than I need to. I'm thinking $300 - $500 would be reasonable, however there are so many options at that price range and I'm not sure if any stand it above the others. The one requirement is that wireless internet isn't available so I need a laptop that I can plug an Ethernet cable into. [link] [comments]

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:12 PM PDT I'm a motion graphics designer (using mostly Adobe software), looking for a well built, thin and very powerful laptop. I'm looking for a good comparison between this two laptops (with the higher spec's of each brand) but I'm not finding it. I'm currently using a MSI GS63. The trackpad is terrible, the speakers are a joke, and the built quality is showing its limitations with a year and a half of heavy use. Before that I was using MacBook Pros but I got tired of frying its internals every year. Do you have any idea of what should I get? Money is not my primary concern (it's an investment I have to make no matter what). Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments]
Need help buying a laptop for starting uni Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:10 PM PDT Hi, I'm starting university soon, and I'm needing help on deciding which laptop will be worth my money and last me well. I'm thinking of going for either Thor Lenovo 720, or the Microsoft surface pro. Out of these two which one would you say is worth getting, or would you say there's a better laptop I can get for round about the same price range (£1000, or $1300 being my max) Thanks [link] [comments]
ASUS ZenBook or Dell G3 for college Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:55 AM PDT Looking at laptops for college and was wondering which one of these I should get for schoolwork and some gaming. Ive found 2. One is a Zenbook with a i7-770HQ, 1050ti (4GB), and 16GB ram with about 10 hours of battery life. Also there is the Dell G3 with a i7-8750H, 1060 Max-Q, 16GB ram with only like 4 hours of battery. Was wondering which one people think I should go with. I have links if needed. Was leaning toward ZenBook but i feel that it will be outdated much sooner than G3. Thoughts? [link] [comments]

Need a basic laptop for school under $250 Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:49 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Trying to keep it under $250 and in the United States. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life and 2/1 don't matter to me. I'm just looking for something to type school papers on and watch Netflix. [link] [comments]

Thunderbolt Dock for Laptop with older USB ports Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:21 AM PDT I am planning to buy a laptop with USB 3.0 ports. The site recommends some equivalent USB 3.0 docks, but I noticed that USB 3.1 - Thunderbolt 3 docks are not that much more expensive Should I expect a Thunderbolt 3 Dock to downgrade itself and work for laptops with an older/slower version? I am planning to re use the Dock after I buy my next laptop, so I wanted to invest in a Dock with a longer life. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Aug 2018 04:18 PM PDT I ordered the XPS 13 9370 over the phone on May 31st, the representative told me that it was back ordered and I should be receiving it in 2-3 weeks, there was also a promotion at that time for students to receive $100 gift card and was told that I will receive it in 30 days after placing the order. I received the laptop towards the end of June. I was able to use it for a couple of weeks, I called within those two weeks because the laptop was surprisingly slow. They did not really help with the issue, I also called in regards to the $100 gift card and I just kept getting transferred and was told to wait a couple more days. I did not used my laptop for 3 weeks because I went on vacation, and when I got back last week the laptop wouldn't turn on. I called technical support team and they ran a diagnostic and said it was a defective battery. I was so disappointed because I need my laptop for work, they tried fixing it but they said I have no choice but to send them in. It was frustrating considering this is a brand new laptop. I was promised that they will expedite and prioritize this because I really need it for work. I was told that this will be fixed within a couple of days. I also reminded them about the gift card but yet again I was transferred to and was told that someone will call me back on Friday or Monday in regards to this. I never received any call from them. Then last night I received an email saying that the parts needed to get my laptop fix is out of stock. I was very disappointed yet again because they promised something without even checking first if this parts needed is out of stock. I was on the phone with them for an hour just trying to get a refund at this point because of a very disappointing customer service and failing to deliver whats promised. They provided me the number for the refund center and I called today only to be transferred more than 10 times to different representative. I was on the phone for almost 3 hours today just trying to resolve this issue. Each time they transfer me they tell me different things. I asked to speak to a supervisor and had come to agreement that since they can't process a refund and this issues I had occurred within the first 30 days, I will just be receiving a brand new laptop instead. He said that the technical support will be able to assist me on this process and assured me that this will be the last time I will get transferred. When I spoke to the representative, they are claiming that they cannot provide me a new laptop. It is very frustrating and I asked for the supervisor and when they transferred me they are now claiming that in order to process an exchange they will have to submit a report and get it approve and only then they'll be able to send a REFURBISHED one. It is extremely frustrating at this point because for the last 3 hours we were just going in circle and not resolving the issues. I told them that it is very important for me to get the laptop as I need it for work, I am already behind because of all the false promises they have been stating. At this point I just want a refund. Can anybody help me? [link] [comments]

Laptop for programming, studying and movie watching? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:12 AM PDT Hey guys! I want to buy a laptop for the abouve mentioned purposes. I also play games, but very rarely (like 1-2 hours a month, and those games aren't really heavy) Also we will design circuits in the university I think. So all in all I think the most power hungry tasks would be programming and circuit design. I could buy a HP Pavilion 15 with these specs: i3 5010U , R7 M360 , 8GB ram, 128Gb SSD + 1TB HDD... Do you guys think this machine would be sufficient for these purposes? (I don't really like laptops actually, so I'll only use this laptop until I finish university) [link] [comments]
Possible future of laptops given the 10 nm Intel delay Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:33 AM PDT One of the hobbies that I had in my childhood was hardware - I build and overclocked several computers for me and for my friends. That is why I am still fascinated with the development of new hardware and now when the time has come to change my laptop I realized that there are no really good options among ultrabooks and even worse - there will not be any up until the end of 2019. End of 2019 is the time, when Intel promises to roll out their new 10 nanometer processors that were due 2 years ago... To put things simple, it means that to have a really good ultrabook, which I expected two years ago, I will need to wait another year and a half... To buy any laptop now is not worth it as it is similar 14 nanometer technological norms that were first released in 2014. Another thing is, over the last years the smartphones' hardware has been developing at a pace several times faster than what has been happening with mobile laptop processors. The Iphone X weights almost 8 times less than MacBook Air but is significantly better in terms of performance, power consumption, display resolution, etc. 8 times, "Caaaaarl". And since the new model will appear in a couple months, the point is clear. Mobile devices have achieved the same performance as ultraportable PCs and before the end of 2019 are expected to outperform their much bigger rivals. There are two things. First, there is no point in having so much power in your mobile device. Second, to have the ability to use this power in your laptop would be perfect solution for many users. Yes, if only we could attach a keyboard, display and battery and make smartphones' hardware run MacOS, Windows and their application there will not be much less need in ultraportable PCs in the future. I think this is what major players' way of thinking is and that is partly the reason why Intel is several years behind the schedule with the release of their new processors, why Apple market cap has surpassed 1 trillion mark, and also why Apple is not updating their MacBook Air... Would be really cool to see if we would be able to attach our new super powerful smartphones to our new devices that combine display/keybord/battery and run our usual applications with the same performance. I wonder if cafeterias will have these display/keybord/battery gadgets for rent at some point in time 📷:P So, when this thing is release, that is the very time to update our gadgets and spend our money. Of course, this only concerns people who do not need super-powerful laptops to play games, run PhotoShop and other performance-thirsty programs. [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:02 AM PDT Repost because buying the laptop for a friend. She wants a larger screen.. • Total budget and country of purchase: 599 plus tax at most. USA • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Performance over battery life. • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all. • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows only • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. NA • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. MapleStory nothing more, possibly puzzle games etc. • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I simply just want a laptop that can run MapleStory smooth. • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 17 inch screen, only requirement. • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. No u. I usually am on /r/buildapcsales but laptops aren't very popular over there at the moment. I was recommended one on my old post but failed to mention I needed the 17inch screen. Just bought an xps 15 9570. which accessories should I buy? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:40 AM PDT I have 30$ In amazon gift cards and a 10$ off anything sold by amazon coupon. I am thinking about a Laptop cooler, but not sure which. I already bought thermal pads to put in the laptop and I have thermal paste. Would a keyboard cover or laptop stand help at all? I am using the laptop for school and maybe games once in awhile. Also, if there is any way I could get a charger that works like apple's old magsafe, that would be great. EDIT: its the 4k variant with the i7 and 1050ti [link] [comments]

Shovelware/bloatware on new Acer laptop - what is my first step to cleaning it up? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 08:46 AM PDT Hey guys, Just purchased an Acer Spin 3 and it should be arriving tomorrow. I've read online a lot about how much shovelware/bloatware/crap acer installs on their computers, so I just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with Acer crap and the best/most efficient process of uninstalling everything that isn't needed. Is it just a tedious process of going through the control panel one at a time and uninstalling software? Or is there any automated process to go through to get rid of it? Any advice/help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
Best converter adapter SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB for Laptops/PC? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 08:35 AM PDT
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:48 AM PDT Hello, I've found that my laptop a year on is overheating to the point that I can't even really play any CPU demanding game because the CPU just heats up to >90c after which it just starts thermal throttling itself making the game unplayable, even at only 2.4ghz (the laptop is advertised to play at 3.2ghz) and with undervolting at a -.12 voltage offset. This is despite having relatively decent cooling pad. Is anybody aware of a fix to this, or would I just be better off getting a mid-range laptop for University purposes and a gaming desktop in the future? [link] [comments]
