Need help on final decision for CS: Zenbook 14 vs Envy x360 13

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:11 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm from South Africa and about to start my CS degree and need to purchase a laptop for this purpose. I've put a bit of research into it already and have basically come down to 2 choices which I need to decide between but I'm unsure which would be the best.

Basically the 2 models I've come down to is that of the Asus Zenbook 14 (R7 5700U, 16GB) and the HP Envy X360 13 (R7 5800U, 16GB). I just went in today to get my first hands on with both of them but still came out undecided with them, I quite enjoyed both. The biggest difference would be that the Envy is touchscreen and also convertible, but this isn't really a big deal for me and could live without it if the Zenbook is the better option. I also did quite like the slightly larger screen size of the Zenbook. I've been struggling to decide which one would be the better option overall, and if the difference between the 5700 and 5800 would be a big difference. I'm able to get the zenbook for a bit cheaper (I live in South Africa) but honestly the price difference is negligible, I care more for which would be the better option overall. Any advice is appreciated!

    Laptop for CS Student

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 01:14 AM PST

Hi there! I am thinking about selling my gaming PC (i5 6600k, gtx 970) and my Laptop (an old acer aspire 3) in order to switch to only owning a Laptop for everything.

My budget is about 1000-1500 Euros.

Since I don't have time play Games anymore, I don´t really care about the graphics. Though i sometimes play a little league of legends or minecraft, but nowadays cpu integrated graphics should be able to handle that I guess.

But I enjoy making music in fruityloops from time to time thats why I am looking forward to a neat CPU, which shouldn´t be to much of a downgrade from the 6600k. ( I know this is an old CPU but quite powerful).

The storage should be about 500gb of SSD, I own an external HDD with 2tb so no need for that.

I dont really care about the battery life, since I am going to use it a lot at home, and at university where I can charge it as well.

I dont really know much about displays and panels to be honest, but it really doesnt have to be anything special.

    So far I´ve stumbled across the Huawei Matebook 16 ( Ryzen 7 5800h, 16gb, 500gbssd), 1100€.

If you coudld write about your experiences of the Matebook or have any suggestions for alternatives , I´d really appreciate it!!

Want a 17 inch laptop for school work/mainstream stuff to also replace my Desktop PC

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 06:15 AM PST

My current laptop is slow as heck now and since I'm using it a lot more, I'm looking to replace it. Also, thought about it and may as well get rid of my Desktop PC I have in my dorm and just use the laptop as my main PC so I need something that can be that powerful as well. Also I'm using it til it dies or gets super slow so prefer it to last long.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      YES

Should I purchase a used m1 Macbook air base model (8 gb ram, 256 gb ssd) for $950 cad ($750 usd), or should I wait for the m2 Macbook air later this year?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 11:52 PM PST

I was originally waiting for the m2 macbook air to release, but I noticed someone selling their m1 macbook air base model for around $750 usd. Should I buy it for that price? Or is it worth waiting for the m2? I would likely be buying the base model for the m2 air as well since thats all I need.

    Thanks.

    VRCHAT Suitable Laptop? UK Based.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:09 AM PST

Can someone please suggest a reasonably priced laptop that can handle VR Chat? I don't plan on using it for any other gaming, it just seems most of my friends are using it so I thought I'd better join in! Other than that the only things I plan on using it for are the usual internet browsing, e-mails etc.

I'm UK based and would prefer sticking to a lower budget, but a quick google suggests machines between £400 and £1200. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Desktop replacement - UK, work and gaming

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 12:56 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
£1,000, may stretch to £1,200 for something special if needed.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance>Build Quality>Battery Life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not overly important. Will be in my studio most of the day at a desk or on a lap stand, will occasionally be taking it travelling or out of the house so would prefer it not to be a brick.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming - Wide variety of games but Football Manager, Gwent, Overwatch, TES games with mods will probably get most attention for the next while.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
To be able to run most games on high or medium settings with a constant framerate around 60fps min for multiplayer. Would also like to run Oblivion and Skyrim with mods.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Will also be using for work so while I don't mind RGB, if it had the option to toggle on and off would be appreciated and would prefer the casing to not be too outlandish. Good screen is a must as I will only be hooking up to one monitor and whilst I'll be using keyboard and mouse when at the desk I'll be spending a lot of time late on working away from the desk so a decent keyboard and touchpad would be appreciated.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My current PCs GPU is ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 2060 OC EVO Edition and CPU is Ryzen 5 3600. Replacing as I'm moving into a small studio and will be out and about so laptop is needed though probably will only stay in the studio for a couple of years so it doesn't need to be future proofed for more than 3/4 years as once I move out and have more space I will revert to a PC. Want something that would hope up well against my PC performance wise if possible

    Thanks :)

Looking for work laptop great for Excel and opening and closing multiple tabs for several hours.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 03:30 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      700usd
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance is priority, battery, then build quality. Form factor not too important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important, the laptop will most likely stay at home 95% of the time
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13-15inch, or more if it's desirable
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Being able to run low-spec games is nice but not required.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Just low-spec games. See above.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Build quality is nice to have. Something with good cooling/ventilation since it gets hot in my area. 16gb RAM for those tabs, SSD to speed things up but I don't need large storage space. Also preferably with separate mic and audio jacks. No need for the rest.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
The laptop will be dedicated for work. Laptops with capabilities for Excel and multiple tabs being opened and closed over and over are the priority. I would like something that has great cooling/ventilation, it gets super hot and dry in my house usually. Something that's easy to clean too would be nice. Bonus points if it has good built-in mic and webcam. Thanks everyone!

    HP 255 G8 vs Ideapad 5

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 03:24 AM PST

    Hi guys!

I'm looking for a laptop for work purposes. I'm a teacher and I use my laptop mainly for producing office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). I work on fairly simple documents. I use my desktop for more complicated tasks.

I'm leaning towards these two options:

    Both options have:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 5500U
    • RAM: 16 GB
    • SSD: 512 GB
    • Screen size: 15.6''

I chose AMD versions for comparisons, let me know if Intel versions would be more suitable.

I would prefer one over the other based on (in this order):

    1. Screen brightness
    2. Battery life
    3. Build quality
    4. (Extra: speakers quality, not so important).

Price difference is not relevant in this case.

Thank you very much, you all!

Looking for a laptop appropriate for AutoCAD and PhotoShop ++ for a student

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 02:53 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
10,000-16,000 NOK (Norway), somewhat open as I am willing to pay a little more if the laptop is a much better fit
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance (including screen) is key, portability is also important as I'll carry it around most days. Most important is that it can last me for the rest of my studies (3-4 years at least). I do not need a touch screen or any unique gadgets, as that'll add cost for something I can do without.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Somewhat important, my current laptop is over 3 kg + the charger, which is heavy enough to be an issue for my back honestly, so preferably less than that. I don't need an ultralight though.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
At least a 14" screen for easy use with some programs and video-viewing, and as I'd need to fit it into a backpack maybe less than a 17" too.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes, AutoCAD (both 2D and eventually 3D) is essential, as is Adobe (PhotoShop and Illustrator in particular). Also working with SketchUp (3D) and QGIS (potentially large files to load). Not a gamer but I have joined a few "LAN"-parties with friends where the option to play Minecraft and other not-too-high performance games is nice to have.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good screen that has good color accuracy is important, not necessarily professionally but good. Will also be spending some weeks before due dates looking at the screen for quite a while, so one that is pleasant to look at is key too. Keyboard preferably not too loud as I'll use it in class. Preferably not a very loud machine, but I fully realize that any pc will make some noise when being pushed. Also a web-camera for zoom-classes...
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Any help is deeply appreciated, as I've been quite bewildered looking into laptops myself for the past 2 months almost. My current one is almost 8 years old so I desperately need a new one with my current studies in landscape architecture, with some heavier programs than I've had before. Happy to answer any questions too.

    Laptop for engineering student

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 06:10 AM PST

Hi there, I've narrowed down two options for a laptop to buy for university. I mainly want to know if the difference in processing power is significant or not. I will mainly be running software like MATLAB, LTSpice and programming IDEs etc. so I am looking for some power. I have a desktop at home so it does not need to be my main device.

    SAMSUNG Galaxy Book 15.6" / i5-1135G7 / 256GB SSD / 8GB RAM - seems like a good all rounder

ASUS VivoBook M515UA 15.6" / Ryzen 5 5500U / 256GB SSD / 8GB RAM - more powerful but battery life is pretty poor and camera and wifi card is worse

I would be happy to buy the ASUS if there is a significant difference in speed between the two, but if not, Samsung may be the better bet. Any help is appreciated!

Legion 5 suggestions needed, or wait for 12th gen

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 07:29 PM PST

I live in Thailand and have a few choices of Legion 5 series.

    5600H with a 3060 (39,000B) divide by 30 for USD

    5800H with a 3050TI (44,000B)

I was on JIB site (a big seller here) and saw a Legion 5 with a WQHD display, but I thought the 5 series was all FHD displays. Any difference in panel other than resolution? Refresh rate is 165Hz like the FHD. I wonder why no one bought them as they have some stock. (5800H with a 3060 too, all for 44,000B)

The other option is to wait for the 12th gen Intel chips. No idea for price or availability.

The reason for the purchase is because my 2020 Tuf A15 developed a screen problem where it looks like pressure on the screen, but there isn't any. I will replace the screen and give it to my GF's kid. Not so impressed with it.

My desktop (3900x w/3080) is my primary rig. The laptop is 95% for work, but I want to play games with it too when not busy. My Tuf A15 stutters a bit and was not really playable with CS GO.

    Any suggestions?

    Looking for a high-res screen and Non-Nvidia graphics. <= $2000 USD

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 02:45 PM PST

Prefer to avoid Nvidia due to their proprietary Linux drivers.

Looking for 15-16" form factor, ideally 32GB ram but 16GB is fine too. I want something >1080p resolution (QHD, 4k, etc) Only model I've been able to find on my own so far is the HP Omen 16 with the Ryzen 5800H and RX6600m graphics and QHD (1440p) screen. Which I would have ordered already except they won't ship for over a month and I really need something sooner.

    Any suggestions?

Looking into getting a macbook primarily for school. I do some programming on it and the rest is system administration classes. My budget is CAD$2000 roughly.

I'm stuck in between the air with 512gb ssd, or the two pros 13inch with with the ssd being 256 or 512.

the pro 512 will send me over my budget by around $171 which isn't the end of the world but i really would prefer not to go over budget since im a full-time student.

So really im asking if i need 512gb or if the 256gb would be okay and maybe get an external hard drive down the road when im more flexible with money?

**note: my budget is including apple care plus
