If I run a shell script as root, does that transfer to any commands within the script? Or will I need to put sudo within the script?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:17 AM PDT

Let's say I have a script that prompts the user for a location and changes the static IP for eth0 accordingly.

So the script is gonna have the ifconfig command in it.

Can I just type "sudo myscript" and enter the root password, or will I be prompted for a password when my script gets to the ifconfig command?

Or will I need to put "sudo ifconfig" in the script?

Help me set up remote helpdesk for family

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:13 PM PDT

I want to be able to remotely access a number of machines with ssh at any time.

I've installed Ubuntu on a few machines, and I'd like to be able to help people when I can. Linux is amazing for computer helpdesk stuff because you can instantly access with ssh, instead of guiding someone through installing Teamviewer, then pissing about on their machine for half an hour.

    Plan A

Set up port forwarding, keep the user's password, remote access at any time.

Problem - port forwarding was destroyed, and besides they're not on static IPs, and old people don't want to google 'whats my ip' all the time. They just want me to maintain the machine.

    Plan B

Reverse ssh tunnelling from their machine to mine:

    ssh -F -N -t R:5043:localhost:5043 andonome@myip ... blah blah

... then I can set it up to run... as a systemd service? And also it'll need my ssh keys, so anyone breaking into their machines can break into mine...

...so... I could add a user on my machine without privileges, then put quota limits on the drive, and check access logs, and then access that user and remote into their machine, and then...this is clearly a kludge.

I have a Raspberry pi with a static IP. Is there any way to run a single, simple script - something that doesn't take days to complete - which just means I have ssh access to someone's machine any time it's on?

One user is a hostel computer, so I'd like to practice this as something like a professional environment, with respectable security, as if each one were a client.

    X what?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:44 AM PDT

X11, X.org, X server, X client, X display server? What does it all mean? I believe it's the foundation for graphics on a screen but that's pretty much it.

I'm considering moving to Manjaro, but I need to know if the adobe suite works on it, or if there's a good alternative to it.

Can't delete files/directories, even when using sudo

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:36 AM PDT

It's been many, many years since I've tinkered with Linux beyond setting up the odd RetroPie, but I've recently installed Ubuntu on my Windows 10 machine by way of Windows Subsystem for Linux, and am having some issues with file permissions.

All I've used it for so far is to download some videos using youtube-dl, and I created a script to run youtube-dl against a series of batch files (with video URLs).

When I copy the videos off to my file server though, I'm then having problems removing them. I have read and write permissions on all files and directories, but I get "rm: cannot remove 'video file': Permission denied" every time I try to remove them using rm, even when using sudo.

I'm guessing I'm missing something fairly simple here, any ideas?

    Which linux.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:02 AM PDT

I asked a similar question in r/linux and was directed here. I previously wanted Kali linux but was told that it is not a great software for everyday use. I need help finding the linux that will work for me. I still want to be able to use programs such as Photoshop cs6, Steam, Epic games and chrome. I'm getting into scripting and basic hacking and wanted to try linux because I hear windows isnt great for that kind of thing. I also have Norton antivirus will I be able to use that on linux or should I uninstall? Before I get linux what should I uninstall? In the end all I want is a OS to replace windows 10 and still have 100% functionality with more scripting and hacking tools. Any input is appreciated and thank you for your time!

Purple Screen before Loading Screen (Ubuntu 18.04)

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:14 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but, has anyone run into your computer booting and sitting on a purple screen for about 10 seconds then you get the Ubuntu loading screen? If so, is there anyway to change that purple screen?

Possible to install the USB writter from Mint to another distro?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:21 AM PDT

Title. I really like the USB writter and formatter from Mint and some other distros are using the same. They are simple and just work. But some distros come without them (which is really sad). Can they be installed somehow? Last time I checked the Stores (Discover and Ubuntu) they were not there.

This might seem like a stupid question, but can I move this icon to the right? If so, how? I’m on Ubuntu 18.04

    Amy tutorial recommendations?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:55 AM PDT

I'm just getting into Linux and I'm still a total noob.

Some others advised me to learn in Arch because it's pretty advanced and will help me learn faster.

What are some good tutorials for an absolute beginner to learn basic Linux. But also some more advanced terminal.

And I also got 1 question. Do multiple Linux distro's use different terminal (commands)?

    And what are these called.

    Thanks!

    Change directory script

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:26 AM PDT

CD.sh This script makes it easier to switch directories. It works in conjunction with the .bashrc file. It can only list up to 35 directories, but once in a top level directory, it can be run again to get to subsequent directories from there. To exclude directories that are never needed, enter a capital X at the prompt. A subsequent prompt will ask which folder (number or letter) to ignore (places folder name{/.../name...} in CDskip.txt file). Place the contents of the script file in /root/CD.sh

    Should I use PPA-s?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:15 AM PDT

The latest version of a program I installed from the Mint Software Manager can be installed from a PPA.
But I don't know if I should install it, or should I use PPA-s at all. I get the notion that I should avoid them, based on a couple of times PPA was mentioned in some videos on YouTube, but I'm not really sure.

Problem with driver installation TP-Link AC600 Archer T2U driver

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:38 AM PDT

I own a ASUS T100HA, and since Windows 10 takes up way too much space (it can't even install updates anymore), I finally decided to give Linux a try. I installed the latest Ubuntu generic version on the device, and everything works perfectly. Except for one thing: the wifi. So, I bought a wifi usb adapter, as I have understood that it cannot actually access my wifi chip inside the device. So, I bought a TP-Link AC600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter Archer T2U (https://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_Archer-T2U.html). From their website I also installed the driver on a flash drive, and extracted the files to my device. However, I do not seem to be able to install the driver properly.

Following the Installation Guide for the Linux Driver, I get stuck pretty fast. Ubuntu does not seem to recognize the "sudo make" command. I have tried:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall make
    &
    sudo apt-get remove make
    sudo apt-get install make
    &
    sudo apt-get install build-essential

However, none seemed to work. The only feedback it is able to provide me with is the warning that:

"Package [make/build-essential] is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source."

Could somebody help me out (a bit)? By at least pointing me in a right direction, I'm quite at a loss here. Mostly because I am new to Linux.

Is there a more efficient way of finding read, write, execute permissions for everybody?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 09:53 PM PDT

    Hi,

Is there a way to find rwx permissions for everybody for folders and files? I normally user find / -find 777, but that is looking for rwx for owner and group as well. If there is a better way, please do let me know. Thanks!

No GRUB screen or Boot loader screen after installing Deepin/Mint/Ubuntu

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:50 PM PDT

I tried installing deepin 15.7 in dual boot mode.
after installation now the system can't boot from the hard disc, Until i use a 3rd party usb to load grub. or use YUMI made usb and select Boot from First Hard drive to get the os list showing windows 10 and Deepin with other option to boot into the hard disk. I have done quite a few cycles on install/uninstall of the linux system trying to get this fixed up and it all seems to be not doing anything good at all. I cant boot into the system normally without using a usb to load grub manually and choosing from that. This is not a pleasant experience any use can have.

How much space does installing a new desktop environment take up and how do I go about doing it and keep my current desktop?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 09:27 PM PDT

I like my current setup and don't want to erase everything I've done with it. However, I'd like to experiment with a DE that looks more like chrome os since I do find it pleasing on the eyes.
