Mass produced Laptops with high performance CPUs (pre 2017) Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:46 AM PDT I noticed Elitebooks are dirt cheap online however I was curious if there are any better used laptops out there that I can purchase? I'll be using it for strictly audio production so I just need processing power and some ram. [link] [comments]

Will I damage a laptop battery if I leave it on the charger? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:29 AM PDT So recently my laptop battery died so I bought a new. My dad brought up the fact that I probably burned through the battery's recharge cycle by constantly draining it then recharging when I don't go anywhere with it. So I'm thinking of just charging it and just leaving it on but will it damage the battery? [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:43 PM PDT I am currently typing this on a surface go, I feel I should say why I got this, I had seen the review from Linus a few days prior to ordering. And honestly, I agree with Dave2D's review most. I hate this laptop. I love this laptop. I've never felt so conflicted in my life. It's thin, it's light, it's sexy. It's color accurate, the camera is fantastic, and the Windows hello gets me signed in in less that 10 seconds. But it's slow, I am getting this device because for the next two years I'll be saving for a car and the next 4 years after that it will be college, I need this to last 3 years through college lessons and keep up. And I am using Brave, a browser built to be lightweight yet functional, and even on this, the laptop stutters while scrolling, it got a cine-bench CPU score of 163. It's slow. I paid 550 for this via Costco. And that's my big issue. Like Dave said, I paid 550 and this is slow, and I could pay 380 on Amazon for the Acer Aspire e15 which will run much better. And I know that this device is built for form, but it seems futile to buy a windows laptop that is slow at lightweight web browsing on arrival. I will likely spend another month at least using this as a daily driver, but what do you guys think? should I keep it or should I trade it for a acer aspire e15 or acer R13 Chromebook? And also, the 2:3 aspect ratio of this is very usable for web content, dare I say I love it, but it is terrible or YouTube due to the black bars at top and bottom. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Aug 2018 09:39 AM PDT Hello. I can't decide which one should I buy: Lenovo Legion Y520 -> i5 7300hq + GTX 1050Ti or Lenovo Legion Y530 -> i5 8300h + GTX 1050 4GB version The Y530 is 30$ more expensive. My primary goal is gaming. Is the older Y520 obvious choice because of the better graphics? I can't make up my mind because of the newer gen CPU, better looks (Y530) and 4GB version of the 1050 (not 2GB). Help me out please. MacBook Pro 13,3 (2017) or Huawei MateBook X Pro Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:14 PM PDT I have been thinking about buying a laptop for a while now, and these are my top 2 contenders. I need a laptop that can handle some video and photo editing. (Also having the ability to do some light gaming wouldn't hurt) I have never owned an Apple product before, so the OS would be a new experience for me, but I'm a little worried about the small 128GB SSD of the MacBook Pro. (base model) I don't mind the shallow keyboard travel. On the other hand, the MateBook X Pro (i5, 256GB, MX150) seems like a great laptop for the price. 3K touch screen with almost no bezels, more power and pretty good build quality. But I'm slightly worried about the quality control of Huawei. From what I have heard, there are some touchpad and fan problems in some units which worries me. Not that the MacBook Pro has any issues. (keyboard) The price of both is around the same. Which one should I get? [link] [comments]

Would appreciate it so much if anyone could give me some advice as well as if you know if the issues for the devices I'm considering are all that common/serious. Can't really afford to send my laptop for repair later, it's an all out investment for me. Thanks! [link] [comments]

How good is Ryzen with Vega 10 graphics? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:34 AM PDT Want a smaller laptop for CS classes and light gaming. Laptop doesn't detect its own native screen Posted: 29 Aug 2018 12:24 PM PDT Hey guys I need some help here. I've got an Asus Zenbook Flip here and it stopped detecting its own native display. I was reading a book in tablet mode, I then finished reading and closed the laptop. The next time I opened the laptop the screen would not turn on, the keyboard lights were still on, but no display. So I plug it into an external display and it boots, I get picture, but only on the external display, and here is the weird part: when I try to configure two screens in my intel graphics control panel it no longer detects my laptops native display, only the external TV that i'm using. I've tried doing force shutdowns by holding the power button, but nothing changed. Any thoughts? Update: The touchscreen still works, i just get no picture on my laptop screen and windows does not recognize it as a display device [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:00 AM PDT Hi All, I am running Linux on my MSI GL63-8RD 455I. It houses 8300H coffee lake processor and have 8G ram already inside it. As per the manual of this laptop, it supports max 32G 2666Mhz DDR4 and have two ram slots. But if you look into the way its being reported via command line its indicating it has 4 RAM slots. Why its showing RAM slots as 4 when in reality MSI is telling only tow RAM slots are there? [link] [comments]
Lowest cost laptop for smooth necessary functions? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:57 AM PDT My MacBook Pro that I had for years finally had its last crash so I gotta get something new. I want to switch to windows OS instead of mac. I mostly used my MacBook for streaming, work in Excel and Word, and occasional games like Binding of Isaac, maybe League, WoW, and Rocket League. Will probably end up putting more games on it and also emulators. What are the lowest cost laptops out there that have the specs to run these things smoothly? I have seen the Acer Aspire E15, Lenovo Thinkpads, and Lenovo Legion. I don't care for touchscreen capabilities or if it's light or slim, just that it can do what I need of it. [link] [comments]

[Canada] Looking for a powerful laptop for school / gaming. Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:40 AM PDT
$1500-$1700, Canada.
Best specs. Don't care about 2 in 1 at all, good battery life is a major plus but the laptop will be plugged in most of the time.
Not at all.
Windows
N/A
Photoshop, Lightroom, newer games.
I want to be able to play games for years to come on this. I would like to ideally run games like The Witcher 3, heavily modded Skyrim, etc. and new games coming out on max settings, but if I can run new 2018/2019 games on medium with 60 FPS, I'm happy.
16GB RAM, must have an SSD for Windows (size does not matter as long as it can hold Windows) and a minimum of 1TB on the HDD. Very ideally would want a 1060 in the machine, but if that's absolutely impossible then a 1050Ti will have to do. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:33 AM PDT I'm looking at buying the Lenovo 920, does anyone have any specific thoughts on it? More importantly, does anyone know if it's able to be charged from a battery pack/bank of some sort? I know it already has an excellent battery life but I like the optionally of a battery pack if an outlet is not around. [link] [comments]
Help me decide between the GS65 and Aero 15x. Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:13 AM PDT I am looking for a powerful, portable laptop to use for game development in unreal, as well as solid gaming performance. My upper budget is $2300. I'm also looking for a good typing experience because I do a ton of writing. I considered the Razer Blade 15, but it's simply too expensive and lacks an Ethernet port. I've also heard enough horror stories about Razer customer service to make me wary of spending that much on one of their laptops. I also considered the Dell XPS 15 for it's excellent build quality and solid price compared to the other laptops I was looking at, but again no Ethernet port and it would be a huge decrease in performance. So that leaves me with the Aero 15X and GS65, two laptops that seem perfect on paper, but after spending an entire day reading user reports I'm close to tearing my hair out trying to decide which is the better pick. The GS65 has me concerned about build quality. I saw a video review where the plastic on the hinge had already cracked. And then there are many reports about body flex and "creakiness". But it also seems to just work out of the box, whereas the Aero 15x is riddled with bloatware and software issues. On the other hand, the Aero 15x has superior build quality, but I've heard horror stories of BSOD, bad trackpad, bad tools provided by Gigabyte, and a cramped keyboard. As well as issues with stuttering and programs launching slowly. I've also heard that there aren't fixes for all the issues such as the BSOD problem. It just sounds like a big headache for a $2300. So it seems I have to choose between build quality versus good software. Either way, it feels like a bit of a compromise. So please, help me decide. Which laptop is the right choice? Dell G3 vs Inspiron 15 5000 Thoughts (First serious Laptop purchase) Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:51 AM PDT I'm looking to buy a PC laptop (Not Mac) for the upcoming semester after mine was stolen this summer. I plan on using my laptop for: Casual gaming (CSGO, rocket league, fortnite, etc...) I play alot of games on console so I don't need anything superpowered. Making music (Ableton) Matlab (engineering courses) MS Office (Excel, word, powerpoint etc...) Some comments / questions I have: Do you think I need more than 8gb RAM for what I'll be doing? My last computer had 4gb and it wasn't cutting it. I am looking at 8gb and 12gb models (I've read 16gb is overkill for almost anyone). Do you think 125gb SSD w/ 1 TB HDD is worth $50 upgrade over just regular 1 TB HDD for my applications? I plan on hooking my laptop up to a monitor for gaming so screen specs aren't a huge deal to me. I keep my laptop plugged in most of the time (I keep it in desktop mode), so battery life isn't a huge issue for me. Not concerned about speakers Looking to spend roughly less than $800 on it. I am just looking to maximize performance and durability for the price. I really like Dells, so I've looked at models such as the Inspiron 15 5000 (with the 128gb SSD) and G3 15. But I've read a lot of negative reviews about them and was wondering if any of y'all have used them or have any other recommendations for similar / better spec'd laptops in the same price range. Any help is greatly appreciated :) [link] [comments]

Update my HP Pavilion DV4 or get a new machine Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:35 AM PDT So I have this HP that I use to play Star Trek Online (yes, I am a Trekkie) but my Pavilion is having issues as of late. It has 8GB of RAM but the 7200 RPM HD on Windows 10 is showing its age. Also I think I need to tear the laptop apart and apply a new thermal paste to the CPU as it's over heating. Specs:
But is it worth buying a new laptop since I tend to use day to day my Macbook Pro and only use the HP for my game? Or just keep the HP laptop and upgrade the HD to SSD, apply new thermal paste, and just keep on blowing up Klingons/Romulans/Borg? [link] [comments]
Buying Help! Dell XPS vs Matebook? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:11 AM PDT Okay so I currently have the XPS 13 i5-6200U and I am looking to upgrade to either the XPS 13 i7-8550U or the Matebook X Pro i5-8250U. -Needs to be 13ish inches for portability -A little photo/video editing -Casual games and some graphics -Will be used for coding but I don't think that is too extensive -Price can be around $1500 CAD (with student discount via MS store) From what I understand the 8250 and the 8550 run similarly so I was wondering if the i7 makes a big difference. If I am wrong about something please let me know! Also if you have any other recommendations please let me know. Also if its not even worth the upgrade let me know. Thanks! Edit: The lower end Matebook X Pro does not have the mx150... [link] [comments]
T540s Upgrade; Can I upgrade the screen? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:37 AM PDT The Screen is; 1366 x 768 (HD) Is it possible to upgrade to the 3K display? What's the best possible improvement I can make to it? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:48 PM PDT Hi, My mom is getting a new laptop. She doesn't really need to do anything heavy with it, no games or anything. Mostly just Word and Outlook for work. There are not a lot of options where we live and she doesn't really want to spend a lot of money, so we've basically narrowed it down to two options: one with a Core i5-7200U CPU and a 1 TB HDD (at 5400 RPM), and one that is a bit more expensive, with a Core i3-7100U and a 256 GB SSD. They're pretty much identical other than that. I feel like the SSD will probably be the better option for what she needs, but I'm worried the i3 will be too crappy. What do you think?
