Laptop for programming/ethical hacking for under £2000, UK Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:25 AM PDT Hi! So I'm looking for a laptop for hopefully under £2000 in the UK. I'll be using it for A-levels as I'm doing computer science with my interest being in ethical hacking. My ideal specs would be: i7 or i5 processor 16-32GB ram 236GB SSD 4GB+ Graphics card 15inch screen or bigger As long as I'm capable of carrying the laptop to school e.t.c then weight isn't too much of an issue. OS doesn't really matter either cause I'm just going to make it a dual boot system or just swap whatever OS it has for Kali Linux. I'll be running IDEs on it (Eclipse, Pycharm, Netbeans e.t.c) and security tools that come with Kali. I doubt I'll use it for gaming however, I do want an alright graphics card in case I use programs such as blender and gimp. I don't want it to be touchscreen but I do need it to be reliable as I need it to last through A-levels and hopefully University too. So far I've looked at Medion Erazer X7851 and MSI GS63VR 6RF as they both match my requirements, I just can't decide which one is better. Also any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:46 AM PDT Looking for recommendations for new computer. Have had HPs and not happy with them at all. Based in US and want to spend no more than $600. Only use it for work such as word, excel, browsing internet and watching movies. [link] [comments] |
I'm going to buy a new laptop, but I need help choosing it. Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:45 AM PDT Hello, My name's Maria, and I've just finished my Journalism degree. I am going to start a Post-Graduate course in November and I would like to have a better laptop to work - since mine is 9 years old (Compaq CQ61). As a future Journalist I would like to have a laptop that allows me to do some video editing (Adobe Premiere and After Effects - but mainly Premiere). I've been seeing some laptops online and Dell XPS 15 is a laptop that is ALWAYS recommended but it costs almost 2000€ in Portugal. I've been looking for some ASUS laptops and I found the new ASUS Vivobook Pro N580GD. I think the specs are more than enough for what I want, but since I am no expert on this subject I've decided to ask you guys for some help. Specs:
Do you think that this laptop is a good option? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Gaming laptop for pubg. 1k budget. Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:42 PM PDT My brother is overseas in Portugal and I want to buy him a laptop so he can game a bit. I am in Seattle. He plays primarily pubg. We thought about a desktop setup but it wouldn't work out. I would like to stay within 1k. Refurbished is fine as long as you guys think it's fine. I would want the laptop to at least run pubg at a stable 40 fps. Or at least something that isn't going to be laggy and make for a crappy experience. Size doesn't matter. I think bigger has better cooling? Anyway, I also need to figure out a way to get it to him. So if buying in Portugal or Europe somewhere is easier instead of buying in US and shipping. I can do that too. I just don't know the sites or languages. Total budget and country of purchase: 1k usd. Brother is in Portugal though and I would have to ship from Seattle. I can purchase in Europe online. Idk what would be better.

Laptop for use as mobile workstation with two external monitors Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:32 PM PDT I'm looking for a laptop to replace my current two-laptop travel setup. Being able to run two external monitors in addition to the laptop screen is a must.
Edit: So far I have come across the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 (either the UX550GE-XB71T or the UX580GE-XB74T ), the Thinkpad P52 ( 20M9000FUS looked solid) or one of the dell business line laptops though I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options there. The Asus looks like a solid option but I don't have any experience with their laptop build quality. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:15 AM PDT My GF is currently looking for a laptop for university and home (mostly multimedia, no time for gaming) and it's super important that it will last at least 4 years. Does a dedicated GPU help with any of that? Normally a dGPU just idles if it's not used and that should be the case for basically everything except gaming etc, but not Latex/Python, internet and watching movies, correct? What does this look like in 3-4 years? Will it help then to have a dGPU for more power in the future? Edit: For example a MX150 or maybe MX130 [link] [comments] |

Buying a laptop for University, budget £500 - £700, UK-based Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:16 AM PDT **Total budget and country of purchase:** Buying a laptop for University, budget £500 - £700, UK-based. *Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.* I'm looking for a laptop with decent battery life, that is also lightweight and portable. *How important is weight and thinness to you?* Fairly - I've been told to look for a laptop under 1.8kg and to be fairly thin, for ease of transport. *Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.* Either Windows or Chrome OS. *Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.* Again, for ease of transport I've been told to go with 14" and under. *Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.* No - mostly needed for University work, plus social media and streaming Netflix etc.- *If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?* No :) *Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?* No *Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.* When working - I will be hooking up the laptop to a monitor and keyboard, as I find laptop keyboards uncomfortable to use - I developed RSI in my wrists from using my phone too much (which I no longer do!) and would prefer not to exacerbate it. Based on this, I am unsure whether to get a laptop, or a tablet, if I'll be hooking it up to a keyboard/monitor anyway. It is important for me to be able to transport the device fairly easily, as I'll be moving between addresses a lot. I've done some preliminary research, and have been advised to go with the highest spec I can afford. Based on this, the laptops I can afford that seem to offer the best bang for my buck are: Lenovo Yoga 520. Dell Inspiron 5000 HP Pavilion. If you could let me know what you think of these three, or whether I should be abandoning this altogether and going for a tablet, then please let me know :) Edit: I dont know what I did to the formatting. Apologies in advance. [link] [comments] |

Best Laptop for Longevity? Dell XPS 13 vs LG Gram 13" Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:41 AM PDT Hello again! After doing some thinking and research, and increasing my budget to ~$1000, I've narrowed my laptop choice to either a Dell XPS 13 or an LG Gram 13". Both have great battery life and are great performers, but what matters most is longevity. I essentially want to be future proofed for as long as possible, while not exceeding my budget. To the owners of either device, which is better, and which has the best longevity? If there's a similar laptop that is better in either regard that I happened to miss, please let me know as well. Thanks in advanced! [link] [comments] |

Gaming, newer games at a solid framerate * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Borderlands 2, Call of Duty, Overwatch, FPS and RPG games Graphics not too important, but I would like a higher framerate (I'm no expert sorry) * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Thoughts on swapping MacBook Pro Touch Bar 15” for Dell XPS 15? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:42 PM PDT Hey guys! So title pretty much says it all! What are your opinions on the switch back to Windows from Mac? I've gone through 2 MacBook Pro 15" Touch screens in the span of 2 years due to display/hardware issues, would I be able to get a Dell users' personal opinion on the XPS 15? Personally, I love the Mac interface and the display but am just so tired of the problems the Touch Bar laptops have been experiencing. So I've been looking for a laptop that has similarities to the Mac in terms of appearance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:40 PM PDT Hi, I want to buy a potent Laptop as well for working at university and of course gaming. Now I ended up in the decision between the Dell XPS 15 with 4k Screen (2100 EUR), the Razer Blade with 4k Screen (2700 EUR) and the MSI GS65 with only a FullHD Screen (1900 EUR). I really would prefer a 4K resolution but with the MSI one I do not get the choice (though it has a higher refresh rate but I really want that resolution). So I just wanted to ask you which of them will be the best deal and how the really big price difference between the Razer and the MSI comes (both GTX 1070 but nearly 1000 bucks more expensive) and why the Dell only has a 1050ti but also costs more than 2000 bucks. I would really appreciate help in the decision making process because I really cannot tell where the price difference is coming from and which of them is the best one. [link] [comments] |

I need help deciding between these two gaming laptops. Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:06 PM PDT So I've narrowed down my search to two ASUS laptops:
Everything else is pretty much the same (graphics card, hard drive space, screen size, etc.) so I'm not sure which one to go with. I'm mainly going to use it for higher end gaming. On one hand, you have one laptop with more storage space on the SSD, but a lower refresh rate on the monitor. The Strix Scar Edition has a higher refresh rate monitor and costs less, but has less space on the SSD. I'm not sure which one to go with. And please, if there are better options at this price range let me know. My only real wants are the 17.3" monitor and the GTX 1060. [link] [comments] |

There's this Acer Swift 3 i5 core Or there's the same model w/ i7 core and 1TB HD/128GB SSD I was pretty much sold on the above Swift series devices but I feel this is a runner up and it's making me jaded about what I should purchase bc it just looks so SLEEK with many of my desired features. This is my longest reddit post to date lol- I'm really seeking guidance. ANY help is GREATLY appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:31 AM PDT Below is the form(pretty comprehensive)- thanks reddit! I look forward to the advice here. * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Really as cheap as possible but something quality that will stand the test of time(contradictory I know; read as nothing extra I don't need). I might use student loan money to help ease the cost. Country of purchase-US. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specs for the money. I will rarely need to unplug the laptop. Don't care for tablet like features (actually hate touchscreens on laptops). * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not crucial but would be nice to have a lighter laptop to bike to and from work. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Mostly Windows, likely will eventually dual boot Linux. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Large; work with 3D imagery and often need two windows open at once, so a large screen is desirable (but less important than computation power). * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Avizo, Imagej, MatLab, photogrammetry software, (programming and modeling software) need to be run. The programs require lots of computation power. Also, resolution of the images is important. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Gaming might be done passively. But not the focus. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Reliable build quality, dedicated GPU and SSD required to ease computation time of certain programs. Again, this is an investment I want to be able to use this for a while, and I want it to run what I need it to (3D modeling programs and such). Less concerned about things like keyboard, though I will be on the go a lot. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Pretty much covered; dedicated gpu, good processing capability, SSD, good screen resolution, storage is not a huge concern (mostly run things off external HDs). Gaming might be done passively but would not be the focus. Looking for various options, budget is adjustable to meet these needs of running image processing software, modeling and programming software. [link] [comments] |
