Laptop for programming/ethical hacking for under £2000, UK

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:25 AM PDT

Hi! So I'm looking for a laptop for hopefully under £2000 in the UK. I'll be using it for A-levels as I'm doing computer science with my interest being in ethical hacking. My ideal specs would be:

    i7 or i5 processor

    16-32GB ram

    236GB SSD

    4GB+ Graphics card

    15inch screen or bigger

As long as I'm capable of carrying the laptop to school e.t.c then weight isn't too much of an issue. OS doesn't really matter either cause I'm just going to make it a dual boot system or just swap whatever OS it has for Kali Linux.

I'll be running IDEs on it (Eclipse, Pycharm, Netbeans e.t.c) and security tools that come with Kali. I doubt I'll use it for gaming however, I do want an alright graphics card in case I use programs such as blender and gimp.

I don't want it to be touchscreen but I do need it to be reliable as I need it to last through A-levels and hopefully University too. So far I've looked at Medion Erazer X7851 and MSI GS63VR 6RF as they both match my requirements, I just can't decide which one is better. Also any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm going to buy a new laptop, but I need help choosing it.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:45 AM PDT

    Hello,

My name's Maria, and I've just finished my Journalism degree. I am going to start a Post-Graduate course in November and I would like to have a better laptop to work - since mine is 9 years old (Compaq CQ61).

As a future Journalist I would like to have a laptop that allows me to do some video editing (Adobe Premiere and After Effects - but mainly Premiere). I've been seeing some laptops online and Dell XPS 15 is a laptop that is ALWAYS recommended but it costs almost 2000€ in Portugal. I've been looking for some ASUS laptops and I found the new ASUS Vivobook Pro N580GD. I think the specs are more than enough for what I want, but since I am no expert on this subject I've decided to ask you guys for some help.

    Specs:

    • Intel® Core™ i7-8750H Hexa Core
    • Frequência 2,2 GHz - 4,1 GHz
    • Cache 9 MB
    • RAM 16 DRAM DDR4
    • Disco SSD 512 GB (there is the option of getting a 256 ssd + 1tb hdd - this version what recommended buy a shop worker - he was representing ASUS - and he told me that for video editing 256 ssd + 1tb hdd would be a better option)
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Intel® UHD Graphics 630
    • Graphic Memory 4GB GDDR5

Do you think that this laptop is a good option?

    Thanks.

Gaming laptop for pubg. 1k budget.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:42 PM PDT

My brother is overseas in Portugal and I want to buy him a laptop so he can game a bit. I am in Seattle. He plays primarily pubg. We thought about a desktop setup but it wouldn't work out. I would like to stay within 1k. Refurbished is fine as long as you guys think it's fine. I would want the laptop to at least run pubg at a stable 40 fps. Or at least something that isn't going to be laggy and make for a crappy experience. Size doesn't matter. I think bigger has better cooling? Anyway, I also need to figure out a way to get it to him. So if buying in Portugal or Europe somewhere is easier instead of buying in US and shipping. I can do that too. I just don't know the sites or languages. Total budget and country of purchase: 1k usd. Brother is in Portugal though and I would have to ship from Seattle. I can purchase in Europe online. Idk what would be better.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs. Battery not important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger better. N/a

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Pubg

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Pubg. 60 GPS but I think stable 40 wohld be fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability would be nice. Maybe refurbished option?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Wrote earlier.

Laptop for use as mobile workstation with two external monitors

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:32 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop to replace my current two-laptop travel setup. Being able to run two external monitors in addition to the laptop screen is a must.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: flexible, prefer under $3k, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best Specs. Battery life not particularly important. SSD and plenty of RAM as will be running multiple programs at all times with live data feeds.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not overly important but I am used to a XPS 13 form factor so would like to avoid jumping to a behemoth.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferred is 15" or around there
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light photoshop and video editing work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? gaming not as important as multi-screen capability and ability to run 5-6 demanding programs at the same time.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, ability to easily plug in two external screens (so a solid video card.)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Going to be using this in place of my home workstation for work purposes when working remotely for semi-long periods.

    Edit:

So far I have come across the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 (either the UX550GE-XB71T or the UX580GE-XB74T ), the Thinkpad P52 ( 20M9000FUS looked solid) or one of the dell business line laptops though I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options there. The Asus looks like a solid option but I don't have any experience with their laptop build quality.

    Reasons for dedicated GPU?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:15 AM PDT

My GF is currently looking for a laptop for university and home (mostly multimedia, no time for gaming) and it's super important that it will last at least 4 years.

Does a dedicated GPU help with any of that? Normally a dGPU just idles if it's not used and that should be the case for basically everything except gaming etc, but not Latex/Python, internet and watching movies, correct? What does this look like in 3-4 years? Will it help then to have a dGPU for more power in the future?

Edit: For example a MX150 or maybe MX130

    Buying a laptop for University, budget £500 - £700, UK-based

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:16 AM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:** Buying a laptop for University, budget £500 - £700, UK-based.

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.* I'm looking for a laptop with decent battery life, that is also lightweight and portable.

*How important is weight and thinness to you?* Fairly - I've been told to look for a laptop under 1.8kg and to be fairly thin, for ease of transport.

*Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.* Either Windows or Chrome OS.

*Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.* Again, for ease of transport I've been told to go with 14" and under.

*Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.* No - mostly needed for University work, plus social media and streaming Netflix etc.-

*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?* No :)

*Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?* No

*Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.* When working - I will be hooking up the laptop to a monitor and keyboard, as I find laptop keyboards uncomfortable to use - I developed RSI in my wrists from using my phone too much (which I no longer do!) and would prefer not to exacerbate it.

Based on this, I am unsure whether to get a laptop, or a tablet, if I'll be hooking it up to a keyboard/monitor anyway. It is important for me to be able to transport the device fairly easily, as I'll be moving between addresses a lot.

I've done some preliminary research, and have been advised to go with the highest spec I can afford. Based on this, the laptops I can afford that seem to offer the best bang for my buck are:

    Lenovo Yoga 520.

    Dell Inspiron 5000

    HP Pavilion.

If you could let me know what you think of these three, or whether I should be abandoning this altogether and going for a tablet, then please let me know :)

Edit: I dont know what I did to the formatting. Apologies in advance.

Best Laptop for Longevity? Dell XPS 13 vs LG Gram 13"

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:41 AM PDT

    Hello again!

After doing some thinking and research, and increasing my budget to ~$1000, I've narrowed my laptop choice to either a Dell XPS 13 or an LG Gram 13". Both have great battery life and are great performers, but what matters most is longevity. I essentially want to be future proofed for as long as possible, while not exceeding my budget. To the owners of either device, which is better, and which has the best longevity? If there's a similar laptop that is better in either regard that I happened to miss, please let me know as well. Thanks in advanced!

Thoughts on swapping MacBook Pro Touch Bar 15” for Dell XPS 15?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 10:42 PM PDT

Hey guys! So title pretty much says it all!

What are your opinions on the switch back to Windows from Mac? I've gone through 2 MacBook Pro 15" Touch screens in the span of 2 years due to display/hardware issues, would I be able to get a Dell users' personal opinion on the XPS 15?

Personally, I love the Mac interface and the display but am just so tired of the problems the Touch Bar laptops have been experiencing. So I've been looking for a laptop that has similarities to the Mac in terms of appearance.

    Which of these 3 Laptops?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:40 PM PDT

Hi, I want to buy a potent Laptop as well for working at university and of course gaming. Now I ended up in the decision between the Dell XPS 15 with 4k Screen (2100 EUR), the Razer Blade with 4k Screen (2700 EUR) and the MSI GS65 with only a FullHD Screen (1900 EUR).

I really would prefer a 4K resolution but with the MSI one I do not get the choice (though it has a higher refresh rate but I really want that resolution). So I just wanted to ask you which of them will be the best deal and how the really big price difference between the Razer and the MSI comes (both GTX 1070 but nearly 1000 bucks more expensive) and why the Dell only has a 1050ti but also costs more than 2000 bucks.

I would really appreciate help in the decision making process because I really cannot tell where the price difference is coming from and which of them is the best one.

    Laptop on a ~$500 budget, portable&light gaming

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 500USD, preferably less though

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 is unimportant, I'd like a battery that lasts at least 5+ hours, good specs would be nice

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Under 5 pounds would be ideal, thinness isn't too majorly important but I prefer it

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 and under

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play all my games at the lowest settings and I'd prefer I get 60fps in all of them. Mainly League of Legends, sometimes my friends can get me to play something like World of Warcraft and Minecraft.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A quieter fan and a good keyboard is all I need for I'll mostly be taking notes on it. Touchscreen would be nice but not required, fingerprint readers are entirely unimportant.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't really like the super chunky looking laptops with fat touchscreens and bloated builds, so if there are nicer looking options I'd be happy to see them.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care about 2in1, battery needs to last for (at least) 3-5 hours of light use (word processing, programming, etc)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer something thinner, weight doesen't matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably windows 10, must be able install Linux (Ubuntu) if needed (idk if laptops can be locked to just windows)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing bigger than 15", preferably 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly programming, which does not require amazing specs. Will also be used for Un-intensive games

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Unintensive games such as CSGO and KSP (on low settings), would expect at least 30fps on games like these. (although i'm not sure if you can get that sort of thing for my price point?)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? All those things would be nice, but you get what you pay for ¯\(ツ)

I need help deciding between these two gaming laptops.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:06 PM PDT

So I've narrowed down my search to two ASUS laptops:

    ASUS GL703VM-NH74

    • 60Hz monitor (IPS display)
    • 256GB SSD

    ASUS ROG Strix Scar Edition

    • 120Hz monitor (TN display)
    • 128GB SSD

Everything else is pretty much the same (graphics card, hard drive space, screen size, etc.) so I'm not sure which one to go with. I'm mainly going to use it for higher end gaming. On one hand, you have one laptop with more storage space on the SSD, but a lower refresh rate on the monitor. The Strix Scar Edition has a higher refresh rate monitor and costs less, but has less space on the SSD. I'm not sure which one to go with. And please, if there are better options at this price range let me know. My only real wants are the 17.3" monitor and the GTX 1060.

A good student laptop that I can game on!

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:25 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking to spend a max of $2000. United States
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money. Good battery life would also be a plus.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? If it's light that would be great, since I'll be carrying it around with me.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferred is 15.6 wouldn't mind a 17 inch+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming. I want to start using it almost as a desktop gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to get back into FPS gaming. So it would need to be able to handle some good graphics
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? back lit changing color keyboard (if they have any). Good build quality. Touch screen is optional.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for helping a clueless guy out :)

Laptop suggestions w/ mobility & battery life reqs; 14"-15.6"; ~$950 USD budget; USA located; backlit KBD preferred

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:20 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
A ~$950 USD budget, cheaper is welcomed ofcourse, purchased in the US (online or in store)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
Good battery life is most ideal, not much preference for a 2 in 1 form device

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very important, thin and light would be best for mobility reasons

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows OS is preferably best

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Smaller would be best. I'm thinking 14" minimum and a 15.6" maximum

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No editing software, mainly Microsoft programming. Mainly a processing machine but I'd like capability to game.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I enjoy MOBA/RPG/Shooters(FPS/TPS) type games. (SMITE, Diablo/Witcher, Titanfall/Fortnite hopefully?) Medium settings at the smoothest FPS possible is ideal but I'll take what I can get for the price tag.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Ideally I'd want a backlit keyboard for dark environment usage, a good build quality (I dig the thin, sturdy metal finish), at least 3 USB slots, HDMI port, Bluetooth capability

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I currently have a laptop, but it's pretty big and heavy at 17" with a plastic build. I feel that it's more ideal for lounging at home when I'm browsing the internet or streaming entertainment. I'd like something lighter, sturdier and faster with more mobility. I'd really like a backlit KBD also. I don't know if laptops these days come preset with Bluetooth options, but I have devices that use this connection, so the capability would be amazing. I've been browsing the sub the past week trying to research a bit, as I'm fresh to laptop Do's and Don'ts, and I think I've got some good options.

    There's this Acer Swift 3 i5 core

    Or there's the same model w/ i7 core and 1TB HD/128GB SSD

I was pretty much sold on the above Swift series devices but I feel this is a runner up and it's making me jaded about what I should purchase bc it just looks so SLEEK with many of my desired features.

This is my longest reddit post to date lol- I'm really seeking guidance. ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!

Laptop for specific programs (3D modeling, MatLab, running calculations that use high comp power) form below

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:31 AM PDT

Below is the form(pretty comprehensive)- thanks reddit! I look forward to the advice here.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Really as cheap as possible but something quality that will stand the test of time(contradictory I know; read as nothing extra I don't need). I might use student loan money to help ease the cost. Country of purchase-US.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specs for the money. I will rarely need to unplug the laptop. Don't care for tablet like features (actually hate touchscreens on laptops).

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not crucial but would be nice to have a lighter laptop to bike to and from work.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

Mostly Windows, likely will eventually dual boot Linux.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

Large; work with 3D imagery and often need two windows open at once, so a large screen is desirable (but less important than computation power).

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Avizo, Imagej, MatLab, photogrammetry software, (programming and modeling software) need to be run. The programs require lots of computation power. Also, resolution of the images is important.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Gaming might be done passively. But not the focus.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Reliable build quality, dedicated GPU and SSD required to ease computation time of certain programs. Again, this is an investment I want to be able to use this for a while, and I want it to run what I need it to (3D modeling programs and such). Less concerned about things like keyboard, though I will be on the go a lot.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Pretty much covered; dedicated gpu, good processing capability, SSD, good screen resolution, storage is not a huge concern (mostly run things off external HDs). Gaming might be done passively but would not be the focus. Looking for various options, budget is adjustable to meet these needs of running image processing software, modeling and programming software.
