How to make a decision that will decide the next 5-10 years of my life? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:24 AM PDT I've been wanting to get into IT for about 18 months now. I applied to an internal position around November last year and I was politely declined for the position. Since then I started studying up and am considering getting my A+. Here is my work experience: 4 years in a Sales/Service position at a company. High Inbound/Outbound/Follow-Up calls. I deal with most technical issues that aren't out of my reach to avoid having to bother IS. 3 years at a bank working as a banker. My work has always been around customer service so I believe that I at least have that going for me since I intend on getting into help desk. I currently have the Google Coursera IT Certificate although from what I've read, no one cares about this cert. Bummer. I live in East TN and all the job posts state they want someone with a BA for Tier 1 support. That sucks... I was going to school for an A.A.S in Sys Admin but decided to skip this semester due to being told by many people and reading on here that an A.A.S carries no weight and I will be expected to pursue an B.A. I'll be blunt, I have no interest in going to school. I just know it's not for me. My current employment has drained me of happiness and the blatant favoritism has made me decide I need to do something about my career situation. I make a decent living at around $40k annually before tax. Due to my living situation, I'm stuck having to find a job that will earn at least that much. If I were single I would take a shot in the dark and walk away from my current job and take the risk, but I can't be that reckless since I'm married. I need to weigh my options and see how I can keep taking care of my spouse and I. Is $40k annually reasonable for T1 support (YMMV, I get that) or what am I possibly looking at? Any ideas? Study Materials for Comptia Network+ cert Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:24 PM PDT Hello all, I am switching into the IT industry, and I would like to get a help desk job to start earning valuable experience. I have no prior experience, so I was going to work on the Net+ cert. I already have the Udemy class for that cert, but I'm hoping to get other studying materials that would supplement where that class lacks in preparation for the test. I also have a lab that I use to study for the CCENT as well. Thank you for reading. Any advice is helpful! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:44 PM PDT Hey guys, I am currently in the process of picking a career path and I am having some issues finding where I could excel the most. I majored in Music but have spent the past few years learning programming since it is something I truly enjoy and want to pursue. I have become proficient in PHP, Javascript and Wordpress. I have also done some minor QA internships in IT related companies. I even created a small web design agency were I have done a few websites for companies in Latin America. I feel like it is the moment to find a job in the industry. Regardless of all this I am having some issues placing my self on a starting role. How can I make a successful career switch? What are the best jobs I can look into to place me in a future senior developer role? [link] [comments] |
Career path for working from home Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:29 AM PDT Hello everyone! I'm a little lost in my career path right now. I'm currently working for a company that provides IT solutions for businesses. I do mostly tech support. But my life goal is to work remotely from home and it doesn't really matter to me what to do (IT wise). I'm going become A+ certified next month. I was thinking about doing database administration, but I'm not sure it's a right path if I want to work from home. Please advise [link] [comments] |
How common is it for IT to be treated as something separate to the company? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:53 PM PDT At the company I work for I got hired as an internal IT employee. Problem is I feel like IT in general is treated differently from the rest of the company. Simply put the company I work for doesn't have dedicated space for IT employees. This results in us either taking a cubicle that isn't being used or sitting at coffee shops until we're needed for something that can't be done remotely. Now I have no problem working remotely, it's only a problem because I'm given the position in the assumption that I can fix an emergency. How common is this for companies in general? Google entry level IT, what do you hiring managers think about this? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:10 AM PDT What do you hiring managers think about this program, would you hire a help desk person who has something like this going on? https://www.coursera.org/specializations/google-it-support#courses [link] [comments] |
Some thoughts on college majors and first jobs Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:01 AM PDT People here get so focused on things like: I majored in X, but now I want to apply for job Y so am I not qualified? So let's take IT out of it for a minute. Does someone major in "Financial accountant III" or accounting or econ? Does someone major in "Senior Business Process Analyst" or do they major in management or marketing or finance or management information systems? Think about this please. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:33 AM PDT I am looking to get into helpdesk to start and I am wondering for somebody that has no prior IT work related experience how do you answer the question on salary requirements if the pay is not listed. I don't want to sell myself to short or be out of consideration for the position. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:32 AM PDT Hello everyone, I'm going into Cybersecurity as my degree and it's a career focus I really want to remain in. But I don't want to remain in DoD forever, so I took an interview for a smaller company that does development work in the cloud. The position is in DevOps and my main experience is in web infrastructure. They seem to want my skills and experience. I'm just worried about being boxed in and having nothing to show for a cybersecurity career at the end of it. And I should clarify what I mean by "cybersecurity career": at some point, I'd like to get my CISSP and I'd like to get into security consulting or a CISO type position. DevOps seems to have a portion of that but I'm trying to think long-term what it would help me gain the necessary knowledge in. Anybody with similar experience have any advice on this? US IT Recruiters -- Are you currently hiring anyone from Canada? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:58 AM PDT I just need to be hit in the face with a hard reality. What is the currently situation in the US regarding hiring Canadian applicants? I'm doing my best not to get disheartened and I won't stop trying. However, I feel like my resume is almost instantly rejected when I apply to jobs in the US. I'm doing OK in Canada. I just wish someone could tell me "It's the political climate and it's because you're non-French speaking Canadian..." If you don't know the answer and you don't mind, shoot the question at your manager or HR person and let me know what they say. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Has anyone here that worked in IT land a video game industry job? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:49 PM PDT I'm currently an Management Information Systems major and as I approach graduation, I'm quickly realizing that I really want to work in the video game industry. My original goal was to become either a Systems administrator or a Database administrator and possibly into a Project Manager. I know if I wanted to work for the video game industry, I should've done Computer Science, but I'm just curious if anyone here has landed a job within the industry. [link] [comments] |
What are some good entry level IT jobs? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 09:17 PM PDT I know this is very broad. I'm going to school to obtain my AAS but I currently HATE working at my job. Looking to get out asap to something better. Been applying to tier 1 service/help desk positions but hearing nothing. What are some other ENTRY level jobs I should look for? Open to anything, honestly. [link] [comments] |
Junior IT Support interview this week. What questions should I expect? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 02:43 AM PDT I've got an interview coming up and the person on the phone said there will be a test. What type of questions would they ask be for an entry level role? [link] [comments] |

Best way to break into IT scene Posted: 27 Aug 2018 08:57 PM PDT Recently got laid off from my call center job doing tech support for a major US mobile carrier. I have 3.5 years call center experience from this job. Most of what I did was tier 2 mobile device support, replacing devices, troubleshooting mobile network. After my first year I got a promotion to a manager position that still involved taking calls, but involved more escalated situations as well as managing people. I was able to snag my A+ and Microsoft MTA networking basics while employed. Currently about a 6 weeks from getting my CCENT on their dime since the classes have already been paid for. I've been religiously searching for a new job for about a month now and have only landed 2 interviews. Was told that I interviewed well by both, but lack of true IT experience was what disqualified me both times according to the employers. I have a lot of knowledge and personal experience doing this type of work but am struggling to land even an entry level help desk job. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Aug 2018 05:45 PM PDT Generally speaking , how long companies hold on to your resumes? I applied to a job posting last year with this company , my resume at the time only showcased my limited work experience plus internships. This year after gaining more experience and certifications I am planning to apply again. However I have updated my resume with certs and experience and left out the internships. Just wondering if the company is able to see my previous resume which I don't like since it was put together very quickly and made me look like a novice. Thanks for any advice and suggestions. Phone Interview for Service Desk. Posted: 27 Aug 2018 09:26 PM PDT Hey everyone, As the title says, I have a phone interview approaching soon. The position is for "service desk technician" for an IT Cloud service. I have no experience in help desk whatsoever, but plenty in customer service. The only knowledge I do have of IT is from studying for my upcoming A+ exam (in September) and also from the courses I have taken in CC (still enrolled). How should I prepare for this phone interview, and what should I expect? I've never even had an interview over the phone before! If you have any pointers... Please let me know. Thank you! Best Book To Study For CompTIA Security+ 501 Exam Posted: 27 Aug 2018 05:30 PM PDT I'm looking to start studying for the CompTIA Security+ 501 exam soon and am torn between which book I should buy. Does anyone have suggestions as to the best book to buy? Factors like reviews, publishers, and date published have me going around in circles. [link] [comments] |
Leaving MSP for competitor MSP? Posted: 27 Aug 2018 07:25 PM PDT I work at a small MSP and I've accepted an offer from a bigger MSP who's actually "stolen" a few of our clients over the last few months. So the bosses don't like them to say the least. I've never actually sent in 2 weeks before, so I'm wondering how I should handle this. Do I lie about it? Say I'm going to a different MSP? Do I try to hide it? Do I refuse to say anything about where I'm going? I'm kinda close with the bosses and we have a kind of break each other's chops relationship, so I feel like completely refusing to answer wouldn't work Or do I just tell them straight up? I'm friends with them on LinkedIn and what not so I'm sure they'd find out eventually. And if I removed them LinkedIn I'm sure they'll see something up Anyone have any advice regarding this? Been thru a similar situation? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Moving on from Onsite I.T. Support position Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:38 PM PDT i've been an IT guy since 2013, mainly supporting call center agents and some back office people. By next year, im planning on moving on to Server Administration. Right now, im basically a server secondee, which means i was given some access by our server team to assist with tasks like win updates via TEM, changing OUs, adding memberships, unlocking and resetting passwords in AD, some basic office 365 access for assigning licenses, etc. I was wondering, what resources should i look into so i could create a better foundation for my server admin skills? Work overload and unsure on my situation. Need advice. Open to all opinions. Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:29 PM PDT Currently I write mon-fri about 9 hours each day on a Java program and a iOS program and when I go home from work, I want to keep practicing iOS and python and as well better my logs and algorithms but I just feel tired and want to relax. I work about 45 hours a week and I also manage a windows server at work and I do all IT support request at work. I pretty much manage everything and I am working on a lot of tasks and projects at work. I have weekends off but I'm also a full time student that does online classes for now. A side note, I offered my employer to allow me to do work from home to give me more time to learn my software and to also allow me to separate General IT support issues and server work and do that at work and do software at home but I'd have to be changed from hourly to salary. I just don't seem to have enough time at work to do all the different projects I'm working on. And I have other things on the back burner as well. What can I do? Am I overwhelming myself? I don't want to create lost time and feel like I'm not progressing in life or wasting my life away by relaxing. I just don't feel the desire to program when I get home but I want to generally speaking. And I'm not sure about my work overload as well. I am 22 and I feel that I am learning well and am being fairly successful in a position at someone of my age. [link] [comments] |
Young Professional seeking help determining salary Posted: 27 Aug 2018 05:42 PM PDT I am progressing through the interview process for a position managing the analytics for a company with 45 subsidiaries. If you have experience with a similar role (Data Warehouse Manager, Senior Analyst, etc.) I would appreciate a PM. I'd like to send you the job description with a few ?s. Total comp is above 6 figures in a low cost of living area, but I feel like the job should pay more. I'm open to any feedback or criticism. I appreciate your input. [link] [comments] |
