Community App Suggestions: "Places to discover apps"

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:18 AM PDT

Hello! Welcome to a bit of a different app suggestion post to usual!

This post's category is places to discover apps. Where (apart from this wonderful subreddit of course!) do you find new apps, read app reviews, or look at app comparisons?

Previous app suggestion posts can be viewed here.

PS: If you have any categories you'd like suggestions for, please PM me and the community can help you!

Thanks to /u/klaus3b for the category suggestion! To quote his original request:

idea for Community App Suggestions: web-sites/blogs with good android app reviews

This is actually not an android app but usefull for people discovering new/other apps.

App review should have description, pros/cons, comparison to similar apps

My app is suffering with bad reviews because it's being promoted by a bunch of Spanish websites, while the app is not great with Spanish and other languages other than English, Help

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 12:42 AM PDT

It started with this website called Espenol but since a bunch of other Spanish websites had started promoting my app although it's not helping it at all, because the app is only great with text that is in English and it suffers with accuracy of other languages such as Spanish, also these websites are promoting it as a document scanner while I have clearly mentioned that it is not and it just helps scan text that is highlighted with some color or is enclosed by some color. Like some ID that's lying on your desk.

Please help me tackle this situation otherwise my app will get killed with bad reviews.

    Btw it's called autopick

Need feedback on WiFi improvement App

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:29 AM PDT

Hi, I've built an android app to help non-techies with slow home Wi-Fi. The App helps them scan and diagnose issues like poor signal, interference, low speed, etc and then tries to improve things by reconfiguring their WiFi router wireless settings based on all the rooms scanned, or recommending upgrades etc. The app is still in Beta and needs work to get it to where I want it to be. Thing is, to complete the App I need unbiased user feedback/input to see what really works for people and what doesn't. So, I'm kindly asking Redditors based in the UK with home Wi-Fi issues to download the app, use it and give me a bit of feedback. The app can be found in the Google Play store under the name WifiCleaner – it's free.

    play store link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wificleaner

Once you've done that, you can 'sign up' to give us your feedback here> https://wificleaner.typeform.com/to/vq0VsN(you'll need to leave your email address and you'll get an invite to a 'virtual' focus group on slack)

Thanks, I really appreciate your help

    Dark Mode for Youtube

Hey guys, anyone know or heard any rumours for when dark mode for Youtube officially comes out? iOS has it for about a year now and Android still no signs...

Does the YouTube apps "Not Interested" option actually do anything?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 05:24 PM PDT

For example, I'm constantly getting suggestions for Clash Royale videos, like several, every time I go on. This has been ongoing for many many months.

I click "Not Interested", I select "I don't like the video" or "I'm not interested in this channel" for every one. I'm not subscribed to Clash related channels. I did watch a few Clash videos a very long time ago. I really don't want to clear my history as I've done that before and just start getting suggestions for videos I've already watched.

Is there any method to "seed" the suggestions so that I don't get Clash Royale suggestions any more, or is the "Not Interested" option just pure muck?

Looking for: Pixel launcher with ability to add folders to app drawer

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:48 AM PDT

I am currently using Nova launcher which allows me to use folders in the app drawer.

I'm looking for an alternative launcher that looks more like the pixel launcher but haven't been able to find one that allows for folders in the app drawer.

I have tried: lean launcher, ruthless launcher, rootless launcher, lawnchair v1, and action launcher (too much $$$ for all features)

    Any other alternatives?

Edit: Preferably free but willing to pay the equivalent of Nova cost for a worthy alternative

Can't use Loopsie on Note 9

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 11:27 AM PDT

I downloaded Loopsie because I really like the effect you can make with it. However, whenever I try to use it I get a notification telling me to hold the camera still. If I try to turn the notification off I can record a video/image but it just turns out black and unusable.

Do I need a tripod to use the app or is it the app that's buggy? Are there any alternatives if it's the app that's the issue?

    Camera Apps for Dual Cameras

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:28 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm currently using a Xiaomi Mi5s plus which has a rear dual camera setup. One camera has a regular sensor, the other one is only b&w. However, in the MIUI stock camera app I was able to shoot pictures with this 'bokeh'-effect.

Since Lineage OS does not provide a camera app that supports dual cameras, i.e. no bokeh mode, I was wondering if you know any apps that could do this.

    Thanks in advance,

Morse code ringtone assigned to contacts

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 11:28 PM PDT

Does anyone know of an app or a method to get a phone to play a morse code spelling of a contact when a phone gets a call? I think it would be quite cool, useful and teach morse at the same time. It may be that you have to record the morse code for the contacts you'd want to playback.... How would you get that recording?

What is the easiest way of getting video from your phone to a Head Unit - Crosspost from Android Auto

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 12:15 PM PDT

I am getting a new Head Unit (Kenwood DMX905s) and was wondering how I could get video on the screen. It looks like Android Auto is not really wanting to have video displayed and I have seen various methods for rooted devices... But I am not currently rooted Tmobile LGV30 is what I have.

I really only want to view during my lunch breaks. I take them in my Truck and enjoy watching something during that time. At present I just watch on my phone in the holder I have.

I know the phone is capable of video out, but I don't see how I could connect that to this particular head unit. IS there an app that helps, with a non rooted device?

Try the new sleep aid feature of my app "Gentle Wakeup" to fall asleep faster

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:55 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I just released a new feature for my sleep and wake-up app "Gentle Wakup". A circle will indicate a breath pattern to follow by changing its size. The circle can speed up your falling asleep time by:

    • Clearing your mind: By focusing on the circle how it moves you can clear your mind from thoughts and worries which you gathered during the day. Your mind gets to a rest and you will suddenly notice how tired you really are.
    • Having a long exhalation: The long exhalation phase will reduce the carbon dioxide content in your blood making you tired more quickly.
    • Slowing down your breath: The circle will start with your current breath rate and slow down over time. This will reduce your heart rate and get you relaxed.

I am very curious how well the circle works. You can try it out for free for 1 week and there is a small survey you can fill out at the end if you like.

You can find all information here: http://changemystyle.com/gentlewakeup/articles/sleep-aid/

How could I use Sleep As Android?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 05:29 PM PDT

I've been using Sleep As Android but an alarm app only. I don't want to leave my phone on the bed at night and I don't know if the app uses a lot of resources with all the options enabled, so I disabled almost every feature.

I feel like I'm wasting the app's potential, so my question is, how do you guys use Sleep As Android? What are its best features? Does it use a lot of battery or heats your phone at night?

    Any tips will be appreciated.

Searching for a Calendar App which Supports Sorting Calendars into Sets

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 09:48 PM PDT

I have over a dozen Google calendars which I use regularly. I like to keep them separate so they can be color coded. When displayed all at the same time, it makes the monthly view pretty much useless. I would like to define sets of 4-6 calendars each. When I select a certain set to work within, it's most important that I only see events from those calendars, but additionally, it would be nice when adding new events if those calendars in the current set displayed first in the selection dropdown in addition to the rest of my calendars.

I'm currently using Fantastical 2 for desktop, which has this feature.

Does anyone know of an app with this unique feature or have advice on work-arounds? Thank you.

    No IAP (in-app purchases) filter

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 06:51 PM PDT

There's been some sites in the past that's listed android apps with no IAP. It seems they don't last long. I loathe IAP and would like to play games without them but they seem to be difficult to find. The google play store doesn't filter search results with no IAP. Even if you do a search for "games with no in-app purchases" the results show games with IAP. So are there any sites that curate apps based on specific requirements? Thanks.

App for Bike + Subway (no bus) commuting

    Posted: 27 Aug 2018 09:55 PM PDT

My search for such an app is coming up with nothing. As the title says, I'm looking for an app that plans the fastest route for using a combination of both bike and subway. In my experience busses are significantly slower than subways so I'd like to avoid them.
