Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:08 PM PDT I am planning out my home network and need some advice on placement. I have a small closet in the hallway that has extra room at the bottom. And I also have some space in my office closet, but it could only go on the top shelf. Unfortunately my cats are in the office as well, so the space at the bottom is where we store the litter boxes. These are the dimensions of each space: Hall closet: 15" L x 24" W x 22" H Office closet: 11.5" L x 54" W x 24" H Which placement makes more sense? Link for pictures: https://postimg.cc/gallery/1ctgqdnji/ Edit: for clarification, this is for a wired Ethernet network. Will be installing a 24port switch [link] [comments] |
AT&T U-Verse now dropping inbound vpn traffic?! Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:43 PM PDT I'm running an OpenVPN server along with a web server. I experienced an isolated outage for a few hours. When my service came back I couldn't access my vpn that was working before. I could still reach websites on 80 & 443. Had a tech come out and replaced the modem with a brand new one out of the box, reconfigured and my vpn was working again!! Fast forward 2 days later after flawless connectivity, when I wake third morning, no vpn again. Ports 80 and 443 again, work fine. Tried changing VPN port even toggled between udp and tcp but still no luck...Even when I temporarily tried on 443, which works for web traffic! My guess, AT&T rolled out some update that deep inspects traffic and drops the vpn traffic for whatever reason; anti-net neutrality bullshit or whatever. When they replaced the modem with new one, it hadn't had the update yet, and so it worked for a few days till the same update rolled out to this new modem. Looks like it's not even hitting the vpn server. Logs show traffic from external IP incoming, reasons are either "generic discards" or "Policy (filtersets, etc.)" Can anyone else shed some light here? [link] [comments] |
Trouble solving latency issues to router from only one PC. Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:35 PM PDT I'm having trouble solving a latency issue with a specific computer in my house. Here is an example of pinging my router. This is using a usb wireless adapter. I have used the same adapter on my laptop in the same location and I don't see this latency. I haven't been able to find other examples of this online and not too sure of what the cause might be. [link] [comments] |
Bought a MikroTik router and an Ubiquiti UniFi ap Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:45 AM PDT I was originally going to buy the c3200 or something similar but apparently that's trash ¯\(ツ)/¯ so I read as much as i could here and I've ended up buying:
and
I had a hard time finding any specific model recommended so I would appreciate if someone would tell me if I made a mistake (but also if i did gud). what i have now: icotera modem i5800 (absolute trash, cannot handle the current dhcp load which really isn't that big and needs to be restarted constantly) Netgear WNR2000v5 as an ap upstairs, it covers 200+m2 over 3 floors I've not really had much trouble in terms of wifi, though the two wifi's devices couldn't communicate, so if the phone was connected to one ap and the tv another the phone couldn't stream to the tv. disabling icotera solved this problem at the cost of not the strongest wifi in the basement. I don't spend that much time in the basement so I plan to move the netgear down there for wifi and the ubiquiti up where the netgear is now. [link] [comments] |
Issues with VLAN routing on Cisco sg300 switch Posted: 30 Aug 2018 07:05 PM PDT Hello all, I am running into a brick wall trying to setup VLANs to isolate IOT devices from the rest of my network. I have watched about a dozen videos and read a few dozen websites and I cant quite figure it out. I did some research and found the sg300 switch due to the layer 3 capabilities to do inter-vlan routing without an extra router on the network. There is a fios modem/router combo that I want to avoid having to make any configuration changes in, hopefully by utilizing the layer 3 capabilities this shouldn't be an issue. I have my fios modem connected to the WAN port of a pfsense firewall. The lan port from the firewall connects to the switch on port 5. I changed the switch mode from layer 2 to layer 3, added the vlans, vlan to port membership, and IP interfaces. I am assuming I am missing some routing in the switch, but I can seem to find the right combination of destination/mask settings to get the internet to VLAN 10. Everything within VLAN 1 is fine, but VLAN 10 has no connectivity to internet. Any help would be appreciated. Here is the network graph and some screenshots [link] [comments] |
What do you guys think of the Ubiquiti EdgeMax EdgeRouter Lite? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:59 AM PDT I'm looking into buying the Ubiquiti EdgeMax EdgeRouter Lite ERLite-3. Is it a good choice for a homelab? I am going to plug a switch into it and some access points. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:40 PM PDT I'm not sure if this is the right sub to ask, so please let me know it there is a better sub reddit. Anyway, does anyone know of a good way to remotely turn on a pc? I tried looking into wake on lan but couldn't get that to work. Any other alternatives? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:18 PM PDT I have 2 modems and 2 routers on different locations in our house. Each modem is connected to its own router right now. Is there a way to join the routers into 1 network and have the 2 Internet connections shared? Each connection has a 50gig limit because both are wireless LTE. Its also 10mbps each and is there a way to have the 2 speeds work together to make the overall connection be faster? more info: the 2 wireless routers independent right now can be connected with cable if its the best solution. The modems can also be the wireless router but the coverage is small so I turned off the wireless mode and connected them to the routers. [link] [comments] |
Firewall Options for small home network. Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:09 AM PDT I am in the market for a firewall for my current home network. I have roughly 15-20 devices active on my network and of the devices 2 are smart home devices (echo dot and hue) and a Plex server along with a NVR for 2 ip cameras, the rest are laptops iPad, smart phones and a couple of xboxes and my main gaming pc. I have had the same asus router for a few years (RT-ac3100) and it has been working fine however I noticed in a firmware update a few months ago the networking protection was turned on and it was reporting a constant stream of "malicious attacks" and"two way ips". That said during that time frame a laptop that was on my network I believed was infected with malware or something of that nature and was as a friend put it was "calling home" and causing my issues with network oddities like browser redirects, network slow downs etc. So that has lead me to my search for something a bit beefier in terms of security. I was looking at the ubiquity USG and maybe a pfsense build. I would still like to keep my router and maybe use it as a access point only and use the the USG to be in charge of security. I understand I may have to get a switch and some APs but I am lost because I cant pin down any info about using the USG with my router. IF its not possible then I would be left with completely redoing my home networking. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Updating structured wiring cabinet Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:06 AM PDT Earlier this year, my wife and I bought a house that turns out to have a structured wiring setup. Most rooms in the house are currently wired with Cat5e, but are set up for use as phone jacks (they're wired into these: https://www.legrand.us/onq/structured-wiring/voice-distribution/voice-modules/1267062-01.aspx). I'd like to update it so they actually work for wired networking. Is it just as simple as removing the phone modules and replacing them with these: https://www.legrand.us/onq/networking/wired-networks/data-modules/ac1068.aspx and then wiring them into a network switch in the enclosure? If I wanted to replace the existing 12" cabinet with a 20" one for more space, is that a particularly difficult update to do yourself? [link] [comments] |
Site to Site VPN tracert question Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:29 PM PDT Hey all, I have configured a site to site tunnel between two Netgear SRX5308 routers. I can ping gateways and devices at both ends. Some devices at both ends are NOT working as expected across the tunnel. Windows machines at either end fail on tracert after the first hop (local gateway). Is this behavior expected? Thanks, Heywood [link] [comments] |
My Laptop has a slow connection to my home wifi but works fine anywhere else Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:55 AM PDT Hi, I have an Asus Zenbook UX303UA and for some reason it has slow internet speeds when connected to my home wifi. On my phone (Samsing S9+) I can reach speeds of 200+ mbps on wifi but on my laptop it can barely manage 6mbps. Even when connected to an ethernet cable via a TP-Link it can only hit speeds of 7mbps. I tried connecting to the wifi at a friends house and immediately without even opening a speed test I could tell it was much better, and the speed test result showed that as I hit around 75mbps. Originally I thought maybe there are too many devices at my home but I managed to reach 75 at my friends house where I was at a party (where there were at least 2 PS4s, over 10 mobile devices and chromecasts and other laptops all connected at the same time). We both have the same internet providers with the exact same package. and in my home my laptop is the only one with a poor connection to the internet. Hopefully someone can help me with this problem, I've been searching for answers online but most questions posted are about their device being slow while others are fast, but no one (that I have come across, there could always be someone else that I missed) has talked about testing internet speeds at different wifi networks or routers. Thanks for reading and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Update: I just did a speed test now and on a wired connection (through TP-Link) I got a ping of 25, a download speed of 0.85mbps and an upload speed of 9.86mbps :( Update 2: Oh I should also mention Im in UK with Virgin media with fibre optic. Update 3: I am now getting speeds of 200+ through Wifi. so somehow my wifi speeds troubles seems to have resolved itself after 3 long months of having slow speeds on my laptop. But iI feel like this is only temporary, especially since I didnt really do anything (all I did was run a speed test while wired directly to the router as u/dirk150 said - so thank you!) and suddenly my speeds shot up. I also forgot to mention this but on my home wifi suddenly i will get the connected but no internet status on wifi and i would have to turn off wifi and turn it back on (on my laptop not on the router) to get it to connect with internet. i feel like tomorrow I'm gonna be back to 6mbps speeds :( [link] [comments] |
Isolated VLANs for Echo/Home devices? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:27 AM PDT I have setup an isolated VLAN for my wifi light bulbs and electrical switches, so that these devices cannot see any other devices on the network. Since these devices are controlled through the cloud, restricting this access should not cause any problems. I would like to do the same w/ my Google Home, Amazon Echo, Chromecast, Roku, and Amazon Fire Stick/TV. Would moving any of these devices to the isolated IoT VLAN reduce any functionality? I would like to maintain the ability to (1) control the Roku and FireTV devices through apps on my phone; (2) cast to Roku and Chromecast; and (3) use the Home to control the existing IoT devices. Router/Modem downstairs, want ethernet upstairs Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:42 AM PDT Hi reddit! I hope this is the right place for me. I understand this may be a simple topic but I've had a hard time finding a solution so I'm making a post myself, I'll try keeping things simple. I currently have Spectrum TV and internet. I have very little knowledge of networking. My router/modem is downstairs in my living room, I would like to have ethernet capabilities in my upstairs bedroom, mainly for gaming via Xbox as Wi-Fi has been less than stellar. I have an older house, no ethernet walljacks nor do I have the capability of running wire through my walls or know much about that stuff. (I also don't think my dad would be on board) a friend had mentioned running wire through a cool air duct, is that possibly a viable solution? I also have an old coax cable used for a tv box in my bedroom, would I be able to somehow convert this into a wired access point or flat out move my router/modem to this poistion, or is that not how things work? I apologize for how stupid I may sound, thankyou for any help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:38 PM PDT I'm looking to terminate some cables I discovered in my apartment, and I'm wondering if TIA 568 A/B still matters. I've read that MDI-X is now a standard in for gigabit ethernet interfaces, so does it matter if I have a patch cable or a crossover cable? [link] [comments] |
Anyone running OpenWRT on ASUS n56u? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 09:21 AM PDT I always read that OpenWRT does not work on this model and you can only use Padavans custom firmware, but I came across this recently which suggests there is a working version? https://chuacw.ath.cx/blogs/chuacw/archive/2014/07/30/custom-asus-rt-n56u-firmware.aspx Thinking of switching from Padavan because it's lacking SQM and I'm having bad bufferbloat issues. I have really low upload speed, so it's a common issue. Trying to figure out if this openwrt firmware is like a beta or a stable build? [link] [comments] |
HELP - I can't seem to get these ports to forward. Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:18 AM PDT Hello networking experts and enthusiasts. I am trying to set up an internet connection for a Night Owl security camera set DVR. Basically, I'd like to view my live camera feeds from any place using either my computer (with internet connection, of course), or over my smart phone's data network. I DO NOT HAVE WIFI on my router, and so I am trying to set this up with a hard ethernet line. With the default settings for the DVR network configuration, the DVR will not connect to the internet. I figured I must be needing to forward the ports. And I can't seem to figure out how to forward those ports and make it work. I have already been through the hoops with the ridiculous idiocrasy that Night Owl calls "support," to no avail. My ISP tech support is also not much help, because neither company will help me configure both their system AND the other's. I've followed Portforward.com's instructions as well, and still no success. Can anyone walk me through this? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:15 AM PDT Hello all, I'm currently running a Netgear R6400 and I've gotten frustrated with some speed issues in certain rooms, with certain devices. Our house was built around a year ago, so it's all modern sheetrock, and it's a two story. It came pre-run for ethernet. We have ATT fiber, and the modem comes in to the basement. After some research, I'm going to go with a Unifi setup. My current plan is to turn off the wifi on the R6400 and buy two WAPs, one to put in the basement by the router and one to put on the second story. Does this seem reasonable? Will I lose out by not going with Ubiquity's gateway? Also, I'm leaning towards the Pro WAPs, since I imagine with the 1300mbps (theoretical) output, I should be more likely to get more of my fiber connection, since it's 1000 mbps. I know all sorts of things will play into actual speeds, but does this seem like a reasonable move? [link] [comments] |
Can’t connect to ventillation system ip from Mac Posted: 30 Aug 2018 06:14 AM PDT I have several ventillation machines in my home, and all of them are connected to a switch. I can reach their ip address from a windows laptop, but i can't seem to do the same from my macbook. What can be the cause of it? I can plug my laptop directly in the ventillation machine, but how should i reach the control page then? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Advice sought on best cabling for gigabit fibre Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:27 AM PDT Hi all Now in the process of upgrading the home network to take better advantage of a recent upgrade to gigabit fibre, I'm wondering what others' experience is with cable standards and if you have any specific suggestions on brands or vendors (preferably available via Amazon UK). I started this journey in the last week, having ordered some cables which were sold as Cat7 assuming this to be the current standard and without having researched much. Having received those, I found they actually slowed the speeds I had previously achieved using the same devices/network path. Returning to Cat5e cables seems quicker. So thoughts on whether I'm best going with 5e, 6, 6a, 7 would be useful. For reference the provider is Hyperoptic UK, initially I will be implementing a Ubiquiti Security Gateway and using existing Netgear unmanaged switches for the wired segment. Later I will likely introduce further Ubiquiti kit including switches and access points. That is at least a year away yet. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Should I place the switch before my wireless router...or not? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:03 PM PDT I've done some research and most people say a switch before a router is a no-no, but I want to know if my situation is any different. I live in a condo which has a central network hub in a tiny closet that is far away from my bedroom. I used to put a wireless router in the closet (connected with all other rooms) but the WiFi signal is crap. So I've put a switch in the closet and moved my wireless router to the living room. I have my TV/gaming consoles in my living room so they have wired connections to my wireless router. My PC is in the study room and it's connected "directly" to the switch. My current setup is Internet -> Switch -> Wireless router/PC. I have two wireless routers and two switches available. I do not care about my PC being the same network as my router. I do not have any direct connections to the switch other than the PC and the wireless router. My question is, should I replace the switch in the closet with a wireless router, and place a wireless router in the living room and set that as an access point? How should I set up the two routers, i.e. what modes should the each router use? How would I set up my WLAN (wireless on both or just the one in the living room)? Or, should I just leave everything as is? I know I'm asking a lot of questions and I'm pretty noob in networking so any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. [link] [comments] |
Speedport Smart 2 Bridge Mode -> Netgear RX 500 problems Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:53 AM PDT Hey, I have a Speedport Smart 2 from my Provider and I tried connecting the RX 500 to it. Worked without a problem, but then i found out that I can and probably should put the Speedport into bridge mode. But when I do so I can no longer get the Internet Connection to work. I tried a factory Reset on the RX 500 and a completely new setup but still had no luck in getting it to work. Any one here who knows a bit about the speedport smart 2 and has encountered similar issues in bridge mode? [link] [comments] |
I can't connect to all my network using VPN? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:38 AM PDT I setup an Openvpn server on my Netgear R7000 router. The VPN server assigns address in the 10.8.0.0/24 default subnet. I can access a few application servers on a PC with port forwarding, but I can't access any other addresses/devices on my network (192.168.1.0/24) like my access points. I tried having the VPN on the same subnet as the my network but that didn't work. What's going on here? Am I doing something wrong? EDIT: I can reach the printer's web page on it's ip address, but I can't reach the access points, with our without the following lines: I entered these lines in the custom configuration box under advanced tab for the VPN server on the router. EDIT: I can't use TAP, which would probably accomplish what I want because android, so I'm forced to use TUN. So is there any hope with TUN? [link] [comments] |
Who should I contact to add some wiring to the house? Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:32 AM PDT I have an office in my basement but the wifi cuts out often. I don't have the know how or tools to drill...etc. I don't want to run wire's on the ground, around corners, and down the stairway. Spectrum told me to contact an electrician(via chat). Would that be correct or should I contact a local isp or pc place? I've heard PC shops can get pretty pricey. Or any other suggestions? I basically just want to run an ethernet cable from the router to my pc or a hub/switch. Also, I have a powerline kit but it's not very good. Speeds are slower than wifi, around 10-15Mb/s on average and just as unreliable so far. [link] [comments] |
