    I tried Windows again...

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:16 PM PDT

I decided to give Windows another try. I've always wanted to support it as a project, because the politics appeal to me (anti-competitive practices baked into the OS pushing Microsoft's Edge browser, ubiquitous spying and advertising -- knowing that Microsoft is always watching me/watching out for me just makes me feel safe, you know?). I've been a long-time Linux user because it just works and makes sense to me, but I get vertigo when I think about all the freedom and privacy I get from a mostly open-source operating system.

But no matter how hard I try to use Windows, I always come to the same conclusion: it's just not ready for the desktop.

It all starts at installation. Whenever I go to install Windows I direct the installer to the exact partition I want it to install to, I format it, it creates the extra partitions needed, but even then, Windows always refuses to install to the partition for reasons unknown. The only way I've even figured out how to install Windows 10 is to remove all my other hard drives and install a hard disk I am prepared to dedicate entirely to Windows.

I could go look up the documentation, learn about the Windows install process, and how to work around this, but for some reason I'm here instead.

Then, after I've finished installing Windows somehow, I open up the terminal to do some basic file management. But what's this? There's no rm or ls commands? How can you even do file management on Windows if there's no ls command? What do I do if my girlfriend needs to use my computer and I need to quickly delete porn off my desktop?? How do I get a girlfriend????

And it gets worse from there. I needed to modify some config files, so I went to /etc and it didn't even exist! How am I supposed to know where things are if Windows doesn't respect the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard?

After much searching I learned that on Windows /etc is stored under C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc but there's hardly any configuration in there! There's hosts and a couple other files! How does Windows even boot?? And how are you supposed to change settings??

I really wanted to give Windows a chance but it's just not ready for primetime, sorry, that's just my opinion about it

It scanned the 100% and did a restart. Now it just doesn't work.

I'm on my ASRock (monitor screen), can't access anything with windows.

    No advanced menu, no nothing.

    Windows automatically unbalanced Headphones volume

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 05:38 AM PDT

Everytime after starting windows, first thing I need to do is balancing Left and Right Side Volume of my Headphones. Left is usually 2%, Right 56%, I always set it back to 12-12. Before I first noticed it this I thought my headphones were broken because I normally my volume level is 12%, but there 50% was still not loud enough. I have the latest Windows / Driver installed.

External HDD Backup: Looking for a Carbon Copy Cloner (OSX) Alternative

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:19 PM PDT

    Hey there!

I recently switched from Mac to PC and I am missing the simplicity and features of Carbon Copy Cloner. I am looking for an alternative application that allows me to run scheduled daily backups of 1 external HDD to another, only copying newly added files.

So far, the closest alternative I have found is Acronis, but it doesn't quite offer the same method of ignoring same files and backing up new files like CCC does.

Please let me know if you know of an application that operates similarly to CCC.
    Thank you!

What is causing User Profile Service service failed error?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 01:42 PM PDT

    In a domain environment.

My environment is seeing a spike in an issue where users cannot log into their profiles, while being met with error: "The User Profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded."

After this the user, after entering correct password, will have a profile that will not load.

Also, Windows will not create new profiles and will spit out the same error at log on screen.

However, local admin account and profile will work.

After looking online I found suggested registry fixes. But these did not work for me. The only fix that would work for me is creating a new default folder under c:\users and copying over a working good ntuser.dat file from another default folder on another good machine.

I have a fix already in place (by rebuilding default profile with good ntuser.dat file) but these issues are popping up more and more frequently, so I'm trying to find out what is causing this corruption of the default folder and/or its ntuser.dat file.

I have an suspicion that it could be the permissions of the default folder being set to non-readable for user accounts that attempt to log on but why would this matter if the profile is already created? Regardless, perhaps something is forcing these permissions to be non-readable? I need more computers to test this theory.

So I'm trying to narrow it down and see if it's the ntuser.dat file becoming corrupted in default folder or the permissions of default folder are being changed to non-readable for user accounts.

Your thoughts? Any ideas on what could be causing a sudden occurrence of this issue?

    Thanks.

Best way to buy Windows 7

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 04:19 PM PDT

Hey, I was wondering what the best legal way to purchase windows 7 currently is. I've read you can download an official iso from Microsoft by using a key. I've also read sometimes the key doesn't work. I've seen plenty keys on eBay but I they don't seem legit. Any help is much appreciated.

MCT Installed Windows 10 Pro instead of Home

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 03:03 AM PDT

Hey ! I just bought a new laptop with a Windows 10 Home cd, unfortunately, the laptop doesn't have a disc drive. I installed the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft on a USB drive, and installed Windows with it, inputting my Windows 10 Home key, but when my computer finished the installation, in the settings menu, it told me that Windows wasn't activated !

Then I noticed that the version installed was Windows 10 Pro. I read online that the ISO now has the Home & Pro versions integrated in it, but I don't know how to tell it what version I want. It didn't ask me during setup, so I thought the activation key would sort it out automatically. Anyone has an idea to help me ?

    Thanks a lot !

Windows 8.1 activated with out paying or entering code?

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 12:15 AM PDT

    Hello,

Pardon, it's my first time posting on reddit. I downloaded the windows 8.1 ISO from the microsoft website and burnt it to a CD. When I installed it and connected, it activated with out putting in a code? It seems to think I've paid and says it's permanently activated. What gives? Bear in mind this was a clean install and this PC is old, it previously had windows 7.

Please forgive the dumb question. ----> https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows8ISO was the page I used.
