Posted: 28 Aug 2018 01:10 PM PDT TL;DR Can I use a MicroTik wired router to connect to my gaming console and use my existing Linksys router as a wireless Access Point for all my other devices in order to alleviate lag from buffer bloat? My kids have gotten into playing Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch. I bought a USB3.0 adapter to connect to our router via ethernet because the lag was tremendous. Unfortunately, that didn't help much as our router is pretty old and we have 6-8 devices connected and streaming video at any one time. We have 150mbps down and between 11 and 15 mbps up when I perform speedtests. DSLReports.com has us at an A rating for everything except buffer bloat. Our router is a Linksys EA3500 N750 Dual-Band WiFi Router. As soon as everyone goes to bed I get on and try playing a few matches and lag is practically non-existent so it must be all the users. I have lowered the settings on all the devices to lower quality, tried forwarding ports, using the linksys app's prioritization options and nothing has helped. I seen that MicroTik RB750GR3 hEX Router on smallnetbuilder has it at #3 for Buffer Bloat and it is pretty cheap on Amazon at around $50. Can I connect my modem to it, connect the Nintendo Switch to it and then use my existing router as an Access Point and hopefully figure out how to use the MicroTik's settings to give the Switch more priority when processing the connection while playing? I know I need a router upgrade but I didn't want to shell out $100-$250 right now. Especially if a $50 solution could meet our needs. All of the devices streaming videos seem to work flawlessly on the existing Linksys Router even when running simultaneously. Sorry for the long post, thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Connecting wired devices to wireless network through a router Posted: 28 Aug 2018 05:34 PM PDT I'm looking for a cheap solution to connect multiple gaming devices to a router that will bridge to another wireless network. I don't need a second wifi network. What are my best options? [link] [comments] |
Slow wireless speed with AT&T fiber? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 05:26 PM PDT I just got AT&T fiber 1000 mbps service set up in my apartment and cannot figure out why I'm getting such slow wireless download speeds on my desktop. I'm talking about 20-40 mbps each time I do a speed test. I'm reading how other AT&T fiber users are getting up to 500ish mbps over WiFi. I recognize that device and router affects speeds, but 20-40 mbps? Here are some more details that may or may not be helpful: -I have an ASUS M32CD i7 -Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377, drivers up to date -I was getting 150-200 mbps with Comcast via WiFi on this device previously -AT&T pace router is about 20 feet away -I'm getting 200+ mbps on my iPhone 7 and laptop while sitting beside my desktop -I still get 200ish mbps on my phone and laptop while standing next to the router -apartment is 1050 sq. ft Anyone have an idea on how to potentially solve this? I'm definitely going to get a new router, but just thought 20-40 mbps is comically slow for gigabit service. [link] [comments] |
best ddwrt WIFI settings to select? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:51 PM PDT Could anyone help make any recommendations on which settings i should modify for Wifi optimizations for Fios Gigabit connection? Currently I'm getting about 75Mbps to 101Mpbs using my iPhone or iPad Pro. [link] [comments] |
Please helo a beginner change his router Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:50 PM PDT I just moved into a place I'm renting that used to be a old bed and breakfast owned by a very old man. The download speed is around 3mbps and upload around 0.9 Mbps. Is this good? My phone wifi cute in and out and I'm only like less than 20 feet away from the router and I can't game or really do anything other than stream one video and nothing else when doing so. I checked and the router is a BEC 7800TN R2. Is this old? And would repalcing this with like a 50 or so dollar router help? I don't know much about all of this so please be easy. Thanks! Fast but unstable Wi-Fi in the basement, will a extender fix this problem? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 07:05 PM PDT When I'm in my basement office (which isn't that far from the router but separated by 3 doors down), the Wi Fi tends to disconnect occasionally. On my phone this problem is especially bad, it can barely sustain a Whatsapp call for 30 seconds before the call disconnects. Speed isn't a problem since it's pretty smooth about 70% of the time, so I'm not sure if buying an extender or repeater will fix the problem. [link] [comments] |
Having a lot of wifi trouble, could this be the culprit? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:17 PM PDT We've been having a whole lot of trouble with our wifi and of course the ISP has been of no help. So, in an effort to narrow down the problem I started following all the coax cables and came across this thing. I've never seen a splitter like this and there aren't any others like this in the house. The coax cable comes in from outside the house, the side labeled "out" goes to the TV in the next room, and the side labeled "tap" goes to the modem/router. I've googled around, but could someone help shed some light on this before I call the ISP and make a fool of myself? Internet speeds have been absolutely abysmal and inconsistent, Wifi cuts off our drops out intermittently, and everything takes ages to buffer. Help me Reddit-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope! Recommendations on Managed Switch? 4-12 ports, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, CLI, and POE Nice to Have? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:12 PM PDT Looking to upgrade my network and introduced a managed switch for small number of devices. Does anyone have a recommendation on decent managed switch? Like the title says I'm looking for a managed switch with a CLI, 1000 Ethernet, and 4 to 12 ports. POE is a nice to have but not required. [link] [comments] |
Port Forwarding questions: two devices listening to same port? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 05:35 AM PDT I am in the process of moving my nextcloud server instance from my raspberry pi to an Intel NUC machine. I have Nextcloud listening to certain ports (I think 80 for regular remote interaction, and port 8000 for ssh).

What are the benefits of port forward for things like Netflix and Steam Posted: 28 Aug 2018 06:01 PM PDT Hey all, It's been ages since I've touched my home network and I recently got a new router. On my old router, I remember setting up port forwarding stuff but I'm currently forgetting why I did it. IIRC, port forwarding opens up a "hole in my modem's firewall" to allow data to flow through easier at specific ports. So if I open the ports for Netflix or Blizzard, I should have faster connections to their servers since my router would be passing the information instead of analyzing it, correct? I can see why port forwarding would be good for something like an IP camera of a NAS since I could access the camera from my phone when I'm on another person's network. But what are the benefits for... enabling ports...? for things like Netflix, Hulu, Steam, and Blizzard? Thanks, Dooky Edit: so I was waaaaaay off for what I thought Port forwarding was. Thank you for the replies. For basic home stuff, I'm not messing with it. [link] [comments] |
[Ubiquiti] Extend range of WiFi coverage by adding mesh point to existing UniFi network? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:03 AM PDT I currently have x2 UAP-AC lite in my house. They are both directly connected to my gateway via Ethernet, though I would like to extend my WiFi coverage where it is not possible to have an Ethernet cable. Could you use an AP AC Mesh which connects to one of the UAP-AC's wirelessly and thus have it serving as a repeater where roaming will also work seamlessly? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Aug 2018 05:15 PM PDT We get free WiFi for our apartment and I recently purchased security cameras that requires a router connected through the Internet. Unfortunately, that router also needs specific username and password characters for the cameras. Since the network that I'm on is unsecured and my landlord won t allow me access into the routers homepage ( I can get get on there for information he said, but if I edit anything it s a big no-no... not worth going to jail for lol), is there a way to connect the existing network(Linksys Wrt160Nv3) to my router ( Asus RT56U), like a computer, to which I can Encrypt a username and password for? Like a bridge or Access point? The main rule here is that I cannot access the linksys to edit anything. So no "hacking" allowed. I'm looking for other options here too if this router method won t work, so any help would be appreciated. Internet here is $69. For 50mb DLC, 5mb up....plus a $200 installation fee and I think the landlord might say no :(. I d rather use a secured network for everything anyways. [link] [comments] |
Confused about Firmware for Router Posted: 28 Aug 2018 05:00 PM PDT Hi I own a TL-WDR3500 TL link router and I'm a little confused about updating the firmware a couple of questions: 1) On the label it says its a v1.3 but in router settings it says its a v.1 which one is right? 2) The site provides multiple links for download for firmware, how do I know it is for my particular version, b) do I need to download all the firmware or just the latest one? What to look for when choosing an ISP? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 09:27 AM PDT I'm starting to shop around for a new ISP. Other than the typical, easy to find, criteria (cost, customer support, static IP address, IPv6 support) what other things should I try to look for? e.g. What can I ask them about their infrastructure (that they'd be willing to answer?) Upgraded to Fios Gigabit, need advice for router Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:19 PM PDT Recently just upgraded Fios from 75/75 to 1Gigabit, i'm still using my Asus n56u, while my wired connections can reach 1Gigabit...all my (8) wifi devices can only reach 100Mbps, using IphoneX and Ipad Pros. I live in an old 1900's apartment structure (980sq feet) with lots of metal between the walls and wifi can reach almost all the rooms with my N56U. My old N56u is on ddwrt firmware but I dont think i can tweak it to reach even 400-500Mbps. Does anyone have any recommendations if I should just get a UAP-AC-PRO-E or get a Nighthawk? I was thinking of using the G1100 (w/ WIFI off) and get the UAP-AC-PRO-E. Or should i just get a nighthawk? some of my settings from ddwrt: [link] [comments] |
High ping anywhere outside my network? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 04:11 PM PDT Ping between local devices is about 2-5ms, and ping to the internet (edit: 'the internet' being 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 4.2.2.1, and google.com) is ~500ms (~250ms after restarting my modem). Is this the ISP's fault or is there anything I can do about it? Would QoS help in this situation? Edit: Speedtest.net shows 30 ping and 120% of the bandwidth I pay for (I'm getting 120mbps and pay for 100mbps). Testmy.net shows 100mbps [link] [comments] |
[Uniquiti] Question about connecting multiple wires devices Posted: 28 Aug 2018 11:37 AM PDT Hi all, I set up a Ubiquiti system and I have it as follows: Basement: modem --> USG --> switch --> ethernet cables running up to wall jack in living room and office Living room on main floor: wall jack --> AC Pro Office on second floor: wall jack --> AC Pro Here's the question: I have two wired devices in my living room: a blu ray player I use for Amazon and Netflix streaming and my receiver, which I use for Airplay. With the AC Pro, I can currently either stream Amazon and Netflix or use Airplay, but I can't do both. What is my cheapest solution to hook up both my blu ray player and receiver with minimal loss of the benefits of having splurged for a full ubiquiti system? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Help with windows explorer network tab. Posted: 28 Aug 2018 03:02 PM PDT I was wondering if anyone can help me out. ALSO, I hate that my gateway icon looks like that, how can I fix it? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Will this improve my network? (Ubiquity Router + LTE Router/Modem combo) Posted: 28 Aug 2018 02:20 PM PDT Hello everyone, I was wondering if this would be a beneficial upgrade to my home network. Currently we are using a ZTE MF275R with a 3G plan that maxed out around 13Mbps down and 4Mbps up. Would using a Ubiquity router improve the network performance at all? Currently the ZTE router is connected to a switch which branches off to 4 more APs. We notice that the ZTE router gets slow at times, not sure if we are over loading it. Probably have around 20 - 25 clients on the local network. Not too sure how this would work going from the LTE router into a Ubiquity one... Any input is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Very Strange Problems With Port Forwarding Posted: 28 Aug 2018 12:02 PM PDT Hi, so recently I have been trying to port forward multiple different ports for the Moonlight game streaming app. I had done this around the beginning of summer although the app just stopped working recently. I go to find out that on canyouseeme.org, the ports which I need to be forwarded do not work anymore. I checked my Apple Airport Express router and nothing was changed there. After some digging around I found that using the Portforward.com Port Forward Network Utilities app on my PC I found that for some odd reason, the Port Checker app on my PC shows the ports I was trying to open, as open. And something even stranger is that when I have the Port Checker app open and I have searched at least 1 port, canyouseeme.org shows the port as open as well although immediately as I close the app, it continues to return a "Connection Refused". This has never happened to me before while port forwarding anything. Any help would be great as I am not very great with networking. Additional info: - I am using a static IP address - The IPv4 addresses for my PC matches the ones in the Port Mapping - My firewall is disabled and I have exceptions for those ports - My antivirus is disabled (not that I think it matters) - I am connected via a CAT6 ethernet cable [link] [comments] |
Is this a good replacement for my unmanaged switch/wifi extender? Posted: 28 Aug 2018 11:47 AM PDT I've been looking for a replacement 2 in 1 device for my unmanaged switch and wireless range extender. I get terrible speeds and frequent internet drops with my extender. This is the device I want to replace both with. I will be tossing my extender and switch to the side. I have an ethernet cable running directly from the main router in the living room to my room and will be using that to connect it to the new router. Is this a good choice? Seems to support 300mbps+ wifi speeds and has 4+1 gigabit ethernet ports, which is exactly what I need. Not sure if there is a better option out there for the same or cheaper price though. Edit: Went ahead and pulled the trigger. For $40 it didn't seem to bad of a deal and I wanted to get it before it sold out. I realized it does not offer MIMO, but does have QoS. Is this going to be a problem? I usually game and stream movies/TV. In total we will have 5-6 devices connected to this at any given time. Though we don't game on wifi, and will be using the ethernet ports for that. So I don't think it will be an issue? [link] [comments] |
