Someone i dont trust recently got hold of my iphone for a few minutes and connected it to his computers wifi - how can i check if he installed spyware?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 01:35 PM PDT

Long story short, someone i dont trust at all had taken my iphone 6 plus and had it connected to his laptop (windows) wifi , via letting his laptop become a kind of router to act as a wifi. By the time i found out it was only a couple minutes but im worried he installed spyware or even an app or somethig that takes screenshots or records conversations or things of this nature. How can i find out? I already went through my apps and theres nothing suspicious but i doubt it would be that obvious

    RDP Alternatives with no network.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 04:30 AM PDT

Hope somebody can help with a decent alternative......

I work from home a lot and use a laptop with a shitty screen and even worse mouse. My home PC is pretty decent with a couple of monitors and all I need.

In my old job, I used to just RDP into my laptop and have my work on one screen and all my "research" on another.

New job, it doesn't work. Their VPN has split tunneling disabled and there's 0 chance of getting that changed. Teamviewer/LMI/VNC blocked by proxy. Don't want to use a KVM (wireless Keyboard Mouse combo).

Anybody know of any other ways round this? Maybe hoping for some sort of PC iLO-like USB dongle?

PC BUILD - Is it the motherboard? CPU? GPU? Please GOD help me.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:32 AM PDT

    Hi Guys,

I have read through this thread, and alot of others regarding these parts individually.

I haven't used this PC until this week, was built early Jan.

Essentially, the computer will be running fine and then just turn off or freeze. Freeze in which a hard restart is required. Red CPU light comes on the MB, and sometimes it might be on for a few minutes before it restarts.

I have disabled all over-clocking etc.

    Specs:

PSU: XFX Pro Series 1250W - Black edition

    GPU - Sapphire TriX Radeon R9 390x 8GB D5

CPU - AMD FX 9590 Eight- Core 4.72 GHz

    MB - Sabertooth 990FX R2.0

    RAM - G.Skill 32gb DDR3-1600 RAM

    HDD: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB + WD 2TB 7200 R

Cooling - Couple of case fans

Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 Water Cooling

    Temps look fine.

Computer is never strained, max ill have reddit open, + youtube + dota 2.

I honestly don't know what to do? I've heard the CPU is known for freezing issues, so I followed all tutorials on those fixes. Now I am seeing random posts around the MB giving red CPU lights, and yeh mine does that. But it has literally only been used for around a week or two.

What do you guys think it could be?

    Underclocking an overclocked 1070

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:41 AM PDT

    Hey all

Im having a bit of trouble with my Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 WINDFORCE OC crashing on every game I am playing. I have been told a potential fix is to reduce 1070 to pre-overclocked values.

I have msi afterburner but what should I reduce the settings to? This seems to have fixed some issues for people in the past and fingers crossed it works!

Game crashes due to GPU errors, multiple crashes.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:18 AM PDT

No matter what game I currently play I get crashes at different times all related to my GPU. The issue is new as of a couple months ago.

The error I get is dependent on the game itself and I will lay out some of them below. I will send any crash reports you may need I just really need to get this fixed, it's causing me a lot of pain and stress at the moment so I really need your help.

Shadow of War - "The GPU will not respond to anymore commands"

    Fortnite - UE4 engine crash

Kingdom come deliverance - Directx failure

Enter the gungeon - Normally screen freezes followed by desktop crash

    Divinity 2 - Direct x crash

    Attempted solutions

Lowering graphics Dropping GPU clockspeed -90mhz Reinstalling games Reinstalling Directx (not super confident about this was more complicated) Reinstalled graphics drivers Windows reinstall to brand new SSD

    PC specs

CPU - Ryzen 1700x GPU - Nvidia gtx 1070 RAM - 8gb corsair vengeance 3000mhz DDR4 Storage - 2 x 250Gb SSD PSU - Corsair CX550 (cannibalized from old set up so couple years older than other components)

p.s. (rules state no rewards, is there a platform for this as I may be driven their next. I don't have any tech support shops in the area)

IMEI is incorrectly blacklisted on T-Mobile for being "lost or stolen", but not on other carriers. T-Mobile cannot help and I am considering filing a complaint with the FCC. Am I really out of options?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:13 AM PDT

    TL;DR at the end.

My wife bought a HTC One A9 through AT&T on her parent's plan back in 2016. The phone was lost/stolen on a trip abroad in December, 2016 and AT&T device protection/insurance gave her a new phone in early January, 2017, when we got back. After we got married, we paid it off, unlocked it, and ported her line to my account with T-Mobile in April, 2018. The Android version (Marshmallow) on the phone was AT&T specific and I am not sure what exactly, but some internal settings (probably AT&T specific) weren't playing nicely with T-Mobile. Her phone would often not receive texts or show her errors related to MMS not working correctly.

I contacted T-Mobile support and they recommended doing a factory reset. Well, I did a factory reset and it put the AT&T specific Android back on there. I did some research on XDA (post) and decided to flash the Unlocked/Developer version of the ROM directly from HTC on it as the phone was already unlocked from AT&T and we have been using it om T-Mobile since April. On July 22nd, I successfully flashed the ROM and the phone worked nicely for about a day. On July 23rd, the phone stopped working in the afternoon and it couldn't connect to the network.

I called T-Mobile and they informed me that the phone has been blacklisted, and it is most likely AT&T that has done it since they "own" the phone. I called AT&T and they tell me that the IMEI is clean on their systems, including the insurance system through which we got the new (possibly refurbished phone), and they "cannot unblock a IMEI which is not blocked". I called back T-Mobile and they told me they do not have the power to block it because AT&T owns the phone. I have been going back and forth between AT&T and T-Mobile for almost 3 days now and my wife is out of a phone.

I decided to do more research and what I have found has blown my mind. It is T-Mobile itself that has blacklisted the IMEI. Apparently, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint - all 3 have the IMEI reporting as clean and are willing to accept my phone on their network. I checked the IMEI report on multiple places and even pulled a detailed report from Unlockr.ca to confirm that it is T-Mobile.

Here is the report from https://theunlockr.com/ (paid $1 CAD) that T-Mobile blacklisted the IMEI: https://i.imgur.com/Poe2sdw.png

Another check from https://igotoffer.com/check-imei (Free) that shows the same: https://imgur.com/a/h9cXjnW

Swappa just shows that it is blacklisted.

Does one here have any experience with this? I am utterly frustrated and considering getting the FCC involved to force T-Mobile to look deeper into this. I have been with them 10 years and this is not a good experience at all.

TL;DR: T-Mobile blacklisted my phone and are giving me the run around by asking me to contact AT&T (5 different reps asked me to), who originally provided the phone. I checked with AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint and they do not have it as blacklisted. Two separate IMEI checks confirm that T-Mobile blacklisted the phone. I am out of options and considering filing a complaint with the FCC to force T-Mobile to escalate this.

    Confusion with Dell Customer Service

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 11:38 PM PDT

I called customer support about a month ago and they agreed to repair my laptop for a minor hardware issue that was under warranty. When I called, I specifically remember them telling me that I was supposed to receive an empty box. The language used by their own tracking service, as well as FedEx implies that I am supposed to receive an empty box. Checking online the few Dell repair stories that I could find describe receiving a box.

After not receiving a box for almost a month I called to figure out what was going on only for the rep to tell me that I am not supposed to receive a box but am instead responsible for shipping my own laptop with the shipping label provided. I emailed them for confirmation as well and in an email in which they got my name wrong Dell also said that I am responsible for shipping my laptop.

If anyone has worked with Dell, is this actually the policy? This seems 1) a little irresponsible and possibly risky for the minor issue I am having 2) as if the language was meant to confuse me and thus I worry they don't actually care about fixing the laptop and 3) like this isn't actually stated policy.

I don't know if I'm paranoid but I just don't want to send my laptop by mail unless I know exactly how it is handled.

Computer shuts off randomly, currently won't turn back on.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 11:28 PM PDT

Little bit of background. My computer is several years old now. Ever since I built it it had a recurring problem. When using a lot of bandwidth (almost always downloading files, though occasionally while watching videos), the computer occasionally freezes, blue screens or shuts down. As the problem seemed connected to Wi-Fi, I tried replacing the Wi-Fi adapter multiple times but to no avail. It also seemed possibly connected to the disk as the computer would sometimes show a disk failure/memory dump screen on startup after freezing. However I have upgraded to SSD and the problem persists.

A new thing it started doing is it shuts down randomly and will not turn back on. If I try to turn it on it starts up for a second and shuts down again. If I unplug it, and also unplug the Wi-Fi adapter, then plug it back in but leave the Wi-Fi adapter unplugged, it will start up again. It will not start back up unless the Wi-Fi adapter is unplugged.

Just now it shut down, and would not start up until I unplugged the Wi-Fi. I did so and it started back up, and 10 minutes later shut down again. It will no longer power on at all regardless of the Wi-Fi.

Now normally this would seem like a clear PSU issue to me. However because of the weirdness with the Wi-Fi I think it may be a MOBO issue, or possibly even related to my Windows install. HDD and GPU have been replaced with no change so I don't think it's those. The CPU is quite old but does not seem to suffer from heat issues when I monitor it.

Should I just go buy a new PSU? Or do MOBO problems seem a likely culprit?

    Boot bios problem

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:48 AM PDT

So I have an Asus N552V and just today it had a problem wherein when the laptop boots up in directs toward the bios menu and the date is all wrong. If I change the date and saved it then it will just loop with the bios menu with the CORRECTED date. If I turn it off and it boots up again then the date will change back to the old date. If I press F8 it will show the "select proper boot device" error and can't go further than that. My questions are

    1. Can the problem be about the CMOS battery?
    2. Will installing a fresh windows 10 solve the problem?
    3. If I install a new windows 10 is it possible to just install the OS but not format the drives?
    4. The problem may also be with the hard drive but I dunno exactly what I should check if it the problem is actually the hard drive not being detected.

    Thanks!

Crazy painful ping spikes for days making everything unplayable

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:27 AM PDT

Recently I have had terrible net issues in all my games. I have done hours upon hours of searching online and following guides to no avail. This started with rainbow six where my ping would be fine while searching and picking but as soon as I would enter the game my ping would fluctuate from 30-700 I would rubber band and teleport until I would have to force close with alt-f4. This also then transferred to other games e.g fortnite where im stable 3 seconds then connection timeout for 5 and rubberband back. This makes literally everything unplayable and now its happening to my brother too. HELP ME PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE :)

"A disk read error occurred" but hard disk is ok

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:26 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm getting the error " A disk read error occurred, press ctrl alt del to reeboot" on a laptop (Lenovo T400). This hard disk has an image of windows 7 that was installed with norton ghost.

This hard disk gives me this error on T400 but if I connect it to another computer it boots without problem. And if I connect another hard disk in T400, it also runs fine. So it seems that the hard disk and the laptop are working fine, but together it always give me this error. Could it be a bios configuration problem? any idea to solve this?

    Problem:

Getting BsoD while playing games. At random times, the BsoD come announced (fans start spinning in high gear) followed by BsoD and 1 fragment of sound keeps playing, the percentage won't go up and I need to reset or cut the power to get away from the blue screen.)

None of this happens when I edit in After effects or premiere (which can be larger projects), I can work there for hours upon hours without any Bsod's but as soon as I start playing games I run a risk of getting them (not 100%, if I play games for 4hours a day it can be several times or none at all, this happens on hot days an cold days, during the day, at night,...)

My attemps on creating a sollution:

I've ran GPU-Z while playing OW on high settings with without any extreme spikes in temp or gpu load.

Intel CPU diagnostic gave me following result I looke dup that error but that should not cause the multiple BSoD's (unless i am mistaken.)

Did a mem-test and that gave no errors.

I am kinda stuck now since my newer rig that I build last summer got stolen (long story) so now I'm back on this one. Working has been ok but the abilty to not game has been very annoying.

My budget is non existing currently so I hope this has a fix that does not mean i have to buy every part again.

    Random CPU load at idle

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 04:29 AM PDT

My computer randomly gets to above 70% CPU usage (it's usually at around 90%) while running minimal programs in the background, opening the task manager shows a random app (can be Word, Opera, Mail app, LoL Launcher or even the same task manager, any program tbh) producing most of the CPU load. I don't consider myself a computer expert, but I think I have average knowledge about them and I don't see any sketchy program running in the background or anything, neither my antivirus (AVAST) finds anything even at doing a before boot scan.

Edit: I forgot to mention that most of times it suddenly stops after opening Task manager without doing anything.

    My system:

    CPU: Intel i5 4690k @ 3.5GHz

    OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bits (10.0, build 17134)

    Mem: 2x4 Gb 1666 mhz

Storage: 1x Samsung Evo 850 Sata SSD 500GB (OS drive) 75.1 Gb Used

1x 2 TB HDD 7200 RPM (Bulk storage) 588 Gb used

Other components: AMD R9 390, EVGA 850W bronze, wireless adapter PCIE x1 card

    Dell Inspiron Wifi

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 04:17 AM PDT

    Hey

So I bought this laptop 5 days ago. Has already run into problems. The internet keeps dropping out and I've tried just about everything and googled everything I can to find out what to do.

When I run Windows diagnostics this is what it says

Problems found: possible solution networking reset

Well I did that and restarted the computer and nothing happened.

The main thing it says when I run troubleshoot is:

Investigate router or access point issues.

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator.

    Any ideas?????

So I recently got these Sennheiser headphones and they're great but the volume's minimum setting is actually just a little bit too loud for my tastes when listening for long sessions. Is there any way that I can change this so that they are quieter because at the moment I'm needing to adjust the volume slider to below the lowest button controlled volume each time.
