Looking for new laptop/tablet for uni/biochemistry/medical)- no budget Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:44 AM PDT Hi everyone, I'm starting Uni in a month, studying either biochemistry or medicine. For that i want to buy a new laptop/tablet. Total budget and country of purchase: No budget, Denmark Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want good battery life How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, there wont be much space in the lecture rooms, so it needs to be on the smaller side, not much more than about 13" Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I have always used windows, but i might consider another IOS if there is a good enough reasoning in switching to something else. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Smaller the better i guess, not more than about 13" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. It will be used to take notes, but i will also use it to watch movies, netflix, youtube etc. I am not gaming at the moment, and probably will not be in the near future. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If i was ever to play anything in the future it would be low requirement games like counter strike, and again, i probably wont be gaming. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I have considered touchscreen(not taking? drawing?), i am not sure how useful it would be in medical school or when studying biochemistry, so if you have any advice on this part, please share. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to use this laptop/device for at least 3 years, so i want it to be up to date and kind of high end, so i wont have to worry about slowing/crashing etc. in the near future. submitted by /u/Jonbien [link] [comments] |
Looking for Programming and semi-gaming laptop for school Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:25 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Germany/Austria 800-1000€ ( Am willing to do 1200€ of no cheaper options exist ) * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I would most likely enjoy a 2 in 1 form factor since I plan to use this as a school laptop but isn't neccasary. I just want the best hardware for the price. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not that important altho I would of course prefer thinner if the option exists. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows and Linux ( Preferably Ubuntu ) * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Programming ( Python, PHP, etc ) and some gaming. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** If I can play something like mount and blade warband with a mod or two and some strategy games that don't have the best graphics ( Something like crusader kings 2 ) if the FPS is a stable 30 I'll be fine. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Just good enough hardware that I can semi-game on it and mostly code on it. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** As I said this is primarily going to be used for school and semi-gaming. Those are the two major factors here. I'm certain if it can at least do those two it can do things like using microsoft word or whatever. submitted by /u/Rizpagius [link] [comments] |

Looking For a Thin Gaming Laptop Around $1800 USD Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:12 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking to spend around $1800 USD or less. I'm willing to go up a bit but $2000 is too much. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Mostly specs, but as mentioned in the title I'd like it to be thin and would sacrifice a bit for that. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm looking for something thin, preferably <1 in. in thickness. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything is fine, leaning towards 15" though. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Looking to play upcoming games as well as relatively old ones at a decent fps. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm looking for around 60fps on medium-high settings on newer games. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing special. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would want something with good cooling and can maintain good temperatures under heavy load. Fan noise isn't a big issue as long as it can be turned down during normal web browsing. In addition, looking for something that can last me at least 5 or 6 years. Obviously it won't be able to be max settings on the newest games in the future, but I want to make sure it can at least manage its way for the price I'm paying. If possible, larger storage (at least 512gb) would be nice but not necessary if it is upgradable. Thank you in advance. submitted by /u/Potopz [link] [comments] |

PCSPECIALIST Defiance V (Clevo PA71HS rebrand) or an HP Omen 17 laptop? Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:32 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: I live in the Slovakia/Czechia region of Europe. Budget is somewhere up to ~1800€. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I look for the best gaming laptop out of two of them. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very much. Other than special occasions I plan to use it with a monitor and a keyboard at home. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. But it doesn't have to be preinstalled - it can be bought a lot cheaper on the net. Do you have a preferred screen size? ~$2000 budget, torn between MacBook Pro and a Windows alternative Posted: 25 Jul 2018 02:29 PM PDT I'm an incoming college freshman and I need a new laptop. The MacBook seems like a really good deal right now because of the free Beats promotion and I've heard that Apple laptops tend to last 5-6 years with average use. The alternative is a Lenovo X1 Carbon, but this is not as appealing to me as the MacBook. Should I go for the Lenovo or MacBook for average college use? Total budget and country of purchase: -$2000 USD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Battery life is the priority. How important is weight and thinness to you? -It needs to be fairly light. Which OS do you require? XPS 15 9560 FHD or 4K? Posted: 26 Jul 2018 03:58 AM PDT I think I'm going to set with this choice for laptop I'd need for design, since it comes with relatively nice specs and the best display I found with my budget. The last thing is, should I go for FHD display or 4K? I've read that fhd has worse adobe rgb percentage but 4k might slow down computer and cause scaling problems, and of course it costs extra. Are there some owners of the two who may share their opinions? submitted by /u/chairman_momo [link] [comments] |

Laptop for university - Essay writing, note taking, other misc use Posted: 25 Jul 2018 09:00 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Maximum of $500 CAD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My main focus is getting the best price/performance ratio with moderate versatility. I don't really care too much about if it's a 2 in 1 or has any other bells and whistles. As far as battery life goes, I just want it to be able to last for longer than 3 hours when used for light schoolwork How important is weight and thinness to you? I will be carrying this around for the better portion of the day, so preferably something 15in> and 5lb>. But I'm really not too picky - Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
I would prefer windows just because it has the most developer support of all the OS's. However, I wouldn't dismiss Chrome OS completely - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Preferably within the range of 13-15 inches - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Just a bit of light gaming here and there. Probably just confined to light indie games. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
As said before, light indie games such as Stardew Valley, FTL, etc. I would prefer to play these games at high with 40+fps, and I'm sure most modern integrated cards could do that, but if accepting a shittier IGC will save me money elsewhere I'll take the hit to fps - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Build quality is pretty important to me, I want this thing to last me all my four years of undergrad with minimal mechanical issues. Also, if preferable, I would also like a hard keyboard over a soft one if possible. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like to avoid HP if possible, just do to past quality issues I've had with their products submitted by /u/godofcats [link] [comments] |

N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, touchpad, and build quality (no cooling issues, coil whine, etc.). FHD or higher resolution display, 256+ GB SSD (preferably PCIe or M.2), 8+ GB of RAM. Already checked out a few laptops like last year's Dell XPS 13, Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 14", and Huawei MateBook X Pro (which has cooling issues) but cannot come to a conclusion. Also hoping to find a laptop that'll last me for a few years before really having to consider an upgrade (either to the laptop itself or to another one entirely). submitted by /u/razephalanx [link] [comments] |

$600-$700+ Dell Gaming Laptop Posted: 25 Jul 2018 07:06 PM PDT Odd situation here, but I'm looking for a gaming laptop, and my budget was increased by way of many Dell gift cards (unless of course I could get a better laptop for significantly less with another brand/seller). Razer Blade, MSI GS65 or Aero 15x? Need to buy this week ASAP. Price not a concern. Posted: 25 Jul 2018 06:50 PM PDT Thanks for any input, I want to get this wrapped up in the next 48hrs. Total budget and country of purchase: Over $3,000 if necessary. USA. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't care for a 2 in 1. Best specs for the money balanced with at least 6 hours of regular (read: non-gaming) usage. I am open to an XPS 15 if there is a convincing argument for it as well. How important is weight and thinness to you? The laptops I've mentioned are all acceptable in this department. I wouldn't want a heavier one. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. While I prefer OS X for productivity, I don't see the value in the current MBP. So I'll land on Windows with a Linux distro dual boot. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"-17". Probably 15" is best. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I have a powerful self built PC which I use for any serious gaming, so I'll only be gaming a bit. But absolutely enough to justify a laptop with a powerful GPU. Off the top of my head - WoW/Blizzard Games, Civ, Fallout 4, GTA V and various indie & 2D games. VS 2017, VS Code, Android SDK usage, local NodeJS applications, MobaXterm with ~5 concurrent connections, Ubuntu/Debian on WSL, VirtualBox, WinDirStat & other applications benefiting from fast read times, WinDbg, Audacity, OBS, RDP sessions/VNC server, tons of Chrome tabs and finally Spotify + Skype + Discord 24/7 (Slack sometimes). Various other networking & I/O intensive applications & tools along the lines of what I've described. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The most graphically intense game I'll be playing on a regular basis would be WoW. I'll definitely toy around in other modern AAA titles, and 60FPS @ 1080p medium on avg would be great. If a laptop has the option of a 1060 or 1070 MaxQ, I'll always take the 1070, overkill or not. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 100% sRGB. Good build quality, keyboard, trackpad are must-haves. Unibody preferred. Three years of usage is what I'm aiming for - I'm coming from a 2015 MBP. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need to purchase the laptop in the next 7 days. While price is not a concern, build quality is, and I hear the Razer has the best build quality of the three. However, I also hear that it has a very high failure rate and obvious planned obsolescence if this comment is accurate. Currently, I am leaning towards this MSI GS65 and if it doesn't work out, exchanging it for a Blade 2018. I've heard the trackpad is horrible though. Single channel RAM in the 15x sucks, and I hear it has horrible kb issues. Two things the Razer solves, but sounds like the longevity for the Razer is not there. submitted by /u/timetoreddit123 [link] [comments] |

How important is weight and thinness to you? A sleek form-factor would be cool, but isn't a must. That said, a massive brick would be undesirable. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows or OSX. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or larger Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently looking at the new 15" MBP, 15" Surface Book 2, new 15" XPS, but I'm open to all options! submitted by /u/string_beanson [link] [comments] |
~$1000 budget in the U.S. Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:10 PM PDT Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs are the highest priority, and a good battery life would be nice, but it's not essential. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all, I might actually prefer a bulkier laptop. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming mostly, and ableton live. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Stuff like Overwatch and Rainbow 6; ideally 60 fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good screen is really important to me. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been considering the Acer Helios 300, but I've heard bad things about the visual quality. If you think that it's fine or have a better suggestion, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Is XPS 13 9370 enough for 4K video editing? Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:07 PM PDT I am looking to get a laptop that can handle 4K video editing, and I am pretty convinced on either the XPS 13 9370 or the XPS 15 9570. If the XPS 13 can handle editing 4K clips in Premiere, I will most likely buy it, but if it can't, then I will go for the XPS 15. USD1100 budget, versatile laptop for college Posted: 25 Jul 2018 10:01 PM PDT Hello! I am an incoming freshman that reallyyyyyy needs a new laptop. I bought my current one in a South-East Asian country for around 600USD -- a Dell Inspiron 5558 with an 5th gen i5-5250U processor, 4GD ram. 3 years later and it runs like a tortoise in drying cement, and basically offers nothing much else than frustration. If it doesn't crash itself out of oblivion, I'm sure someday I'll just punch its screen in anger and I'll be left with no laptop for school. And school starts in a month!! I've been looking at the Dell XPS line-ups for a while now, and while they are certainly attractive, the price is a little too steep for me. The Lenovo Thinkpad series are also eye-catching, but I'm not sure how reliable Lenovo is with all the Superfish stuff. Anyway, at the end of the day, I just want a versatile, competent notebook that won't disappoint and lasts long for its investment. I'm not very well-versed in the lingo of Computer specifications, but I'm willing to read up more about it so please give me any and all details that will be useful! - Total budget and country of purchase: $1100, Singapore
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. battery life and specs over 2-in-1
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite important; portability is important for college
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably; I do not like MacOS
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-inch, but do not mind getting smaller screens for a lighter weight
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. studying computer engineering in college; require heavy programming/engineering softwares
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? gaming is not a priority
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? a good storage option, preferably SSD. As well as good build-quality
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My initial budget is just the maximum covered by my scholarship; I am willing to fork out more if it yields me a better product at the end of the day

Linux/Windows laptop required Posted: 25 Jul 2018 06:07 PM PDT I am thinking X1 Carbon or XPS 13 dev edition, but open to other ideas. - Total budget and country of purchase: <$2000 CAD , ideally under $1500 CAD, Canada
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form factor would be great if touch works in linux. >8 hour typical use battery life would be great. Spec is not really important as long as it's snappy to use.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat important but not too much
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Must support main Linux distros and Windows. MacOS is bonus
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13~15"
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lot of visual studio, excel, and other development tools.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? 60fps on last-gen graphics at 1080p would be great but it's not necessary
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? keyboard shouldn't be bad, and the laptop should be reliable. touch screen is a plus if it's supported well on linux.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Might have it drive an external 4k monitor or two. Anything where I can disable Intel ME would be great, but not sure if possible. Good security/privacy features like mic killswitch and webcam shutters is definite plus.
