Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:18 PM PDT I am using Ubuntu 18.04 I googled Awesome Ubuntu Themes or Unique Ubuntu Themes and checked like the top 10 results. All are just the same as the original theme but with different colors. I could do that in Windows. Where are the unique and absurd themes everyone talked about in the Youtube videos? Distro Recommendo for an early 2011 MacBook Pro...help? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:10 AM PDT Hey gang, I've used Linux before, though not very extensively, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a distro that would be especially good for use on the MacBook? The old machine is getting, well, old, and I know Apple likes to throttle their old products. I want to wipe this puppy clean and put something easy on there. We mainly use it for the Internet, so a light, fast distro would be good. Compatible with Steam would be nice, too. Thanks for any and all help! [link] [comments] |
Does tor ALWAYS hide the websites you visit from your isp? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 04:26 AM PDT I know things like JavaScript can leak your ip to a website and stuff like that, but are you always safe from your isp seeing your traffic? Is there any way an isp can see the websites you visit on tor? (With their own resources) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:36 PM PDT I'm currently a Salesforce Admin where I work, and I'm on Mac most of the time. Though I do use Windows at home most of the time, I'm a pretty big PC gamer. Anyways, I've been flirting with the idea of trying Linux for a while because it seems challenging and fun. Wanting to make sure I don't lose any capability for work though if I was to start using one of my own laptops for work and I had moved it to Linux. Do Linux and Salesforce play well together? I'm also curious about how good Linux is for development in general, I'm currently in the process of teaching myself python, sql, and apex. [link] [comments] |

How do I not break my motherboard next time? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 02:09 PM PDT TL;DR did I bork my computer by using grub? Hello, I am a windows user who has been dabbling in switching to Linux. however I am afraid of breaking my computer by messing with the bios. I successfully installed KUbuntu on my Dell Latitude E5540 (dual boot), and was happy, especially with KDE. Unfortunately about a week later, possibly after I had tried to edit my bios, my computer stopped booting. I was a student at the time and my computer was under warranty from the university, and they replaced the mother board, and now grub is gone and I'm back to windows. Since it was my last semester and I needed my computer for school work, I decided not to mess with it. However now that I'm out of college, I don't have the warranty, but I'm pining for the look and feel of kde and I've been thinking about installing mint. so the question is did I break my computer and if so how do I install linux without doing it again? Changed MAC address, ethernet doesn't show up in ifconfig Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:41 PM PDT I changed my MAC address in bios to something radically different than the original one. The Intel Ethernet pci device shows up in lspci, loads the correct module and i have a link light on the port itself. The problem is that i can't get it to show up in ifconfig or ip addr/link. What can i do? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:59 PM PDT Sorry if there are a load of these but couldn't get a sidebar for this sub. I've just got a ThinkPad 450 and I'm looking to run Linux on it. I've had Linux (Ubuntu) installed alongside Linux before but rarely used it which is why I want solely Linux on this machine. So, I'd like something light and fairly easy to use as I don't have much experience. What's your thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:57 AM PDT I have Mint on my computer but I'd like to do a fresh re-install. Is there a simple way to do this or do I have to get my installation USB and run through that process all over again? [link] [comments] |
How to record CPU and MEM for a period of time Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:29 AM PDT I am trying to record CPU and MEM usage of a certain process over a period of time (~5 min). I have done google searching but find a variety of ways of doing it from using collectl, top, atop, ps etc.. I am sure each has its faults but what I care about is the actual CPU and MEM consumption that a process is using while it is open. Does anyone have experience with a method that is accurate, and can record data to be used in excel or similar program? Here are a few links that had some methods I found but thought I should try and get a more experienced opinion. https://askubuntu.com/questions/22021/how-to-log-cpu-load https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/247539/record-cpu-reading-in-period/247555 [link] [comments] |
Total beginner here trying to set up Ubuntu on old Acer Aspire Desktop Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:31 AM PDT I have been learning front end development on my own at home and I have a newer computer I use for that. I have been taking courses on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, React.js, a little PHP, MySQL, I have set up WAMP and also then XAMP. I have learned other stuff too but that is just to give you an idea of where I am currently. I don't have any type of official CS background so please go easy on me. I want to learn how to manage my own server for my small projects and understand the backend better, so I thought it would be great to set up Linux on my older desktop. I am a packrat so I still had everything for this old computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse. I am still learning as much about computers as I can and am happy to provide any information needed, I hope I am getting this right: It is an Acer Aspire M5630 from 2007. It has a Q6600 Intel 2Quad processor, 2 GB DDR2 Memory, 500 GB SATA hard disk, and is currently running Windows Vista. I hadn't plugged it in a long time but I just set it up and it is working fine. I removed all of the files I wanted to save and I don't care if I have both Windows and Linux on it at the same time (is that what partitioning refers to?). When I go into the boot drive, it has the following list: WDC WD5000AAJS-22YFA0 ATAPI DVD A DH16A1S PNY USB 2.0 FD Generic- Compact Generic- SM/xD-Picture Generic- SD/MMC Generic- MS/MS-Pro I chose Ubuntu to start with because it seemed recommended but I am willing to consider any others. I downloaded Ubuntu onto a USB drive and it is the only file on the drive (ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64 as an ISO file). I tried selecting the PNY USB 2.0 FD as the boot device but it still booted Windows. If I try to open the ISO file directly from the USB drive, it opens a utility for burning a CD (NTI CD&DVD-Maker GOLD). Could someone please help me understand how I get this working? Again sorry if I missed including any critical information. Thank you!! [link] [comments] |
Linux Mint on Raid 0 with shared partition Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:03 AM PDT Hey everyone, I am just starting out with linux and have sort of a complicated question. My current storage setup is:
Basically what I want to do is have a dual boot of Windows 10 and Linux Mint. I want to keep Windows 10 on the drive it is on - untouched. I want Linux to be installed as a 500gb partition of the (2) 1TB in raid 0 and leave the rest of the 1.5TB as a shared partition between windows and Linux. My questions are:
Sorry for the long post, I didn't know where else to ask. Thanks for the help in advance! [link] [comments] |
How can I get Timeshift's Snapshots to ext HDD? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:53 AM PDT Put simply, I need to put Timeshift's massive snapshots on my external hard drive. My OS ssd is only 250GB and 2 snapshots eat up around 20GB, let alone more snapshots...and I only have ~100GB left for...idk...but I'd like the space free if it can be helped. The Rsync option says that "snapshots can be saved to any disk formatted with a linux file system" but what does that mean exactly? Do I need to make a partition on my external hdd or something? Plus, isn't it smarter to save my snapshops off my ssd in the unlikely event it fails and I need to restore my system? I've never bothered to backup my computer before, but since I Intend to do what Linux folks do and tinker, I feel this should be something I should learn to do properly. [link] [comments] |

Distro to be used as a persistent usb Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:57 PM PDT I want to make a USB so that I can primarily use Firefox, and have passwords, history, and bookmarks stored through the persistence. Is this possible, and if so, what distro would be best for this? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:35 AM PDT Hey, quick question that drives me mad at the moment (also because googling gives me 99% useless results). When I quickly double left click (e.g. to select a text on a website), the right mouse button triggers somehow. Happens more in Chrome than in VsCode... So I think it is software related.. Using Ubuntu 16.04 on a normal desktop pc (no touch-pad) If you have any clues I'd very much appreciate your help! EDIT: Went to a friend and its the mouse....Throwing it away as we speak [link] [comments] |
