    Computer performance rapidly degrading

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:10 PM PDT

Hi, I recently bought a gaming computer and after about 9 days, the computer's performance is rapidly going down the shitter. The laptop is the: Dell G7 15

    SPECS: CPU - i7 8750h GPU - GTX1060 6gb maxq design RAM - 16GB DDR4 2400MHZ MONITOR - 1080p IPS display

Single core cinebench is ~ 150 All core cinebench is - 1100 Cinebench opengl test is ~ 108 fps Furmark benchmark is -60 fps (1080p ultra preset)

The temps never reach above 80, regardless of what i'm doing. Sniper Elite's fps has dropped from 150 to 70 on average. Rocket League's fps has dropped from 200 to 130 on average. Total War Warhammer, Attila and Rome 2 have all had fps drops from ~ 60 to around 35.

All games are played on ultra, with the back of the computer sitting on a book for ventilation. I'm at this point considering returning the laptop. If that's the case, should I buy the Lenovo Legion y720 or the Acer Predator Helios 300 for gaming. Thanks in advance for any replies I get and this wad on mobile so formatting is probably bad.

Short review of the Gigabyte Aero 15wV8-BK4

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:44 AM PDT

This is a short review of the Gigabyte Aero 15wV8-BK4 from a non-professional standpoint.

I am coming from a MacBook Air 2012 and wanted something powerful and slick notwithstanding price. I saw this laptop and was hooked. I absolutely loved the bezel-less, high resolution display and the good internals.

In my research I read countless posts on social medias complaining about issues with the Aero due to poor quality control. I have not experienced any of these issues whatsoever...very minimal back light bleed, no huge keyboard problems, no software bugs, etc. Remember that of the thousands who purchase an item, usually only the select few that have problems with the item will make a post.

So right into the pros and cons I have found:

    Pros:

    - Beautiful display

    - Acceptable trackpad

    - Great battery life

    - Good internals for the price

    - Amazing port selection

    - The RGB lighting is fun, bright, and easily customizable

    Cons:

    - Some keys on the keyboard take a little more pressure than the others to register (for me the m,n, and keys), but they are still fully usable.

    - The trackpad's elan drivers are downright horrible. Updating the drivers to precision drivers using tutorials on the web is a must.

    - Webcam is not placed well, but that's common knowledge.

    - The included gigabyte software, especially the Smart Manager, seems extremely low-quality, and the gigabyte fusion has some bugs.

    - The included charger whines a little, which becomes quite annoying in a quiet setting.

    - Coming from an apple product, the screen brightness is significantly less.

    - The USB ports are such that it takes quite a lot of force to plug something in to them.

And that's it. Not too many cons, at least none that make the laptop anywhere near unusable. Overall, at least coming from such a weak device, I rate it 4.5 stars.

    Need some help!

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:48 AM PDT

Hi! I've been looking for a laptop to get my girlfriend and found one that I think suits her needs.

    These are the specs

HP 250 G6 Graphics: Intel HD Grahics 620 Storage: 256 GB SSD DvD burner (this is important to her cause she has some disks she wants to watch on it) CPU: Intel core i5 7200U

What she's gonna use it for is mostly watching series and movies or maybe some light gaming, Sims 4 or LoL as the most demanding games.

Do u think it's a good enough laptop? Just wanted a second opinion.

I've had this laptop for 4 years. Although my battery wear is approximately 9% . I can't even use my laptop for 1,5 hours on battery.

How good is this laptop/What game can I play?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:40 PM PDT

    Specs:

    Processor: Intel® Core i7-7700HQ Processor Storage: 128 SSD + 1TB HDD, 7200rpm Graphics card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060, 3B GDDR5 Memory: DDR IV 8G / 2 Slot

Everything looks good IMO but I'm a bit concerned about the VRAM , a 1060 is obviously good but it has 3GB of VRAM most have 6? And also on websites like "canyourunit" some games have 4GB as the"recommended" requirments does that mean I can't play those games on those settings?

    Differences on GM501 and GU501 1060 GTX's?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:50 AM PDT

I tried comparing on the Asus website between the [GM501](https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-Zephyrus-M-GM501/) and the [GU501](https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ROG-GU501/). If both are on the 1060, wouldn't it be better to go for the GU501 pricewise? I tried googling and youtubing but none that could answer my question. Any insight would be appreciated!

    Refurbished XPS 15 9560 vs new 9570

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 10:11 AM PDT

I found a great deal on a manufacturer refurbished Dell XPS 15 9560 on eBay from the seller new_techies. The laptop is $1200. If I'm able to get the new XPS 15 9570 for the same price, which offers better value for money? Also, is there any disadvantage to buying refurbished off eBay? Here are the specs:

    9560:

    i7-7700HQ

    GTX 1050

    4k touchscreen

    512gb SSD

    16gb RAM

    9570:

    i7-8750H

    GTX 1050 Ti

    1080p non touchscreen

    256gb SSD

    16gb RAM

    Thanks!

Thoughts on Asus Vivobook Flip 14?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:51 AM PDT

I'm looking to purchase a new laptop for school. I've seen great reviews of the Asus Vivobook Flip 14 and it's on sale at Walmart right now for $310, which is right in my desired price range. I'm wondering if this laptop will be suitable for students? I'm a Computer Information Systems major, so I will occasionally need to download programs for coding. Will this laptop being able to accommodate that? I just need a pretty basic laptop and this seems great, but I want to be sure before I make a purchase. Thanks!

Have Acer Nitro 5 friend wants to use for video editing. Will it do a decent job? Full details inside!

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:29 AM PDT

Ok so I have an Acer Nitro 5 that a friend wants to buy for video editing. He uses Adobe Premier, and will be doing 4K. My computer has a 7th Gen i5-7300HQ 2.5 Ghz, GTX 1050 Ti 4GB, 8 GB DDR4, 256 GB SSD, and I have an extra 8GB DDR4 stick I can throw in because I'm sure that would help. Would this computer be a good option for him? If this isn't the right place for this, can I be directed to a better sub? Thanks guys!!

Laptop Advice - Should I sell and upgrade?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 05:29 AM PDT

Hello! I am currently a Junior in college and preparing to start nursing school. I have a Samsung Notebook 7 spin 13.3" with 1 TB hard drive and intel core i5. I bought this laptop before I started college at Best Buy for a good price ($699 on sale). The battery life is starting to get shorter, and the overall speed of the thing is starting to slow down. Additionally, when I got it I had some issues with the touchscreen. I am going to be in school for at least 4 more years (to finish my BSN and then to complete a masters program). I know that when I am in school I will likely not be working enough hours to afford a new computer if I absolutely need it. Now, though, I am working full time and could likely afford a laptop around 1,200 if I wanted to upgrade; and I believe my current laptop is not too old to sell and get some decent cash for(they're still going for around 500 on ebay for this model). I was thinking about upgrading to a Macbook for ease of use - I do already have an iphone and apple watch, and I have heard from so many people that they last much longer than a PC. I would be using it for heavy school use - papers, research, multiple tabs open at once, etc. Along with watching movies, netflix, surfing the web, etc. I do not need all of the storage I currently have as I just checked and am only in use of 75 gb of my internal storage.

Basically : Would anyone here recommend selling(while mine still has some worth) and purchasing a new laptop before I run into serious/annoying problems with my own and am stuck with it? Or do you think it would be a waste of money?

Not sure If this was required or not, so I added the form just in case:

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1,200+ * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Decent battery life **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Very important! I would love a thin, small laptop * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Willing to try new things * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 13.3 or below * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** No * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** included above in paragraph

Help- It's time to replace my 2009 macbook pro

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:17 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd say range is $1000-$1500, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Definitely specs. Touch screen not necessary.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Moderately

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would like to do more video/ photo editing. Hope to use Davinci Resolve video editing software (or similar)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any gaming would be minimal

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? This is most important to me- I would like a solid touchpad that can be comparable to the Apple products. I am on this thread to see if anyone has any other suggestions, as the new Macbook Pros do not appeal to me very much (price, the new touch/sound bar). I also like a sturdy build much like the macbooks. Not important- touch screen, finger print reader, optical drive.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I mentioned above I am seeking any advice on alternatives to the new Macbook Pro. I think Apple is over priced for the specs you get. I would like a general purpose (non gaming) laptop that has great functionality (including touchpad).

    Engineering student laptop

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:22 PM PDT

*Total budget and country of purchase: Budget anywhere up to $2500. Location Ohio

*Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 would be cool to have but not a necessity. Better battery life would preferable so I could use out and about.

*How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't really matter but don't want it to feel like my backpack is full of bricks.

*Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 but flexible

*Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Need it for CAD and other engineering programs. Also want to be able game on the side.

*If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly Indy games as I mostly play on my Xbox One but but might play some on PC. FPS id like to run around 60fps at 1080p but graphics can be at medium.

*Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I like good build quality and feel such as the keyboard but that is mostly it.

*Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am open to spending more on something such as a SurfaceBook 2 because I like the buy once cry once philosophy. I really like the surface book and I checked it out at Best Buy but some people are starting to make me second guess myself that I dont need that expensive and good of a laptop.

    Anyways thanks in Advance
