Interested in Linux. Need help with installing Ubuntu.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:53 AM PDT

I'll start off by saying that I'm entirely new to Linux. Though I've tried it for a couple of hours, consider me a noob.

Okay, so I want to install Ubuntu (18.04 is the latest version, I think) and these are the specifications

    Model - Samsung NP550P5C S05IN Chipset - Intel HM76 Express CPU - Intel Core i7 3630QM 2.4GHz GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 2GB RAM - 8GB

Intel Centrino Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, JBL Stereo Speaker (2 Watts x 2) + Sub-woofer (5W) with Sound Alive, 1600x900 LED display and a Blue Ray Drive.

I am currently on W10 v1803 and it is running all right but I want to try out Linux to further extend my PC's life. Oh, and it is UEFI based and I'd like to add that there were issues with UEFI based Samsung laptops when Linux was installed on them.

So, how do I go about it? What are the problems I can run into? How do I install the drivers and how do I ensure that everything works out? What am I gonna lose? I don't play any games as such and my work is centered around Office files.

Also, will I lose the Sound Alive audio enhancement? If yes, what can I replace them with?

    Thank you.

How well does Linux Mint handle virtualization?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 01:07 PM PDT

I want to roll over to Linux for my main OS, but I still have games I want to play that only work on Windows for the time being (PUBG). would the virtualized W10 work well enough to play online games like that?

Is there an advantage to dual booting with Linux (especially Ubuntu ) as opposed to using a virtual machine?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:30 PM PDT

I have a windows PC and an Mac currently, and was looking to practice around with Ubuntu before I have to take some classes that require the use of linux. Is there an advantage to dual booting from say a USB as opposed to simply spinning up a VM?

Same goes for Kali, even though I'd only be using it for trying my hand at some HackTheBoxes / bug bounties.

    GPU: rx 480

    Used rufus for USB drive

    Please help

Edit1: gonna try to use etcher now for the iso

    Users and Groups question

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 06:49 AM PDT

So I have 2 folders on my linux server. There are 3 regular users on the system, lets call them "admin", "user_1", and "user2".

"user_1" and "user_2" has their own folders, "folder_1" and "folder_2", and they should have read and write permission to them.

"user_1" should only have access to "folder_1", and "user_2" to "folder_2". "admin", however, should have read and write access to both "folder_1" and "folder_2". I read somewhere that I should create groups and add users to groups to achieve this.

Can someone please help me here? Is groups the right approach? And what would the commands be that I'd have to run to achieve this?

    Thank you in advance!

How do I create a bash alias that passes arguments ?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 05:35 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm in need for some help for a very specific question :

I have a small java program that I wrote to help me with some stuff. I'd like to be able to use this program independently from the directory I'm currently in.

The program works by calling java myProgram -command [a number]

My first idea was to create an alias in .bash_aliases:

    alias myCommand = "bash /home/start.sh"

and have start.sh contain something like

    #!/bin/bash cd /path/to/my/java/class/ java myProgram.class

But obviously this doesn't pass arguments along.

I'm sure there's a simple solution to this but I have no experience with bash so any help would be appreciated

    Thanks in advance !

PCI Passthrough to a windows VM

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:21 PM PDT

So I'm quite new to Linux and I want to setup a PCI Passthrough to a Windows VM, but before I do that, I have some questions.

    First, my specs:

    - GTX 1060 6GB

    - i7-6700 3.40Ghz

    - 16 GB DDR4 ram

Q1: Because I only have one GPU and have to use my iGPU for the host, does that mean I'll only be able to play on the VM?

Q2: What type of AMD GPU works for this and is not too expensive?

Q3: If I decide to do PCi passthrough and use my iGPU for host now, how do I change it to another gpu if I decide to buy an AMD one in the future?

Q4: I have a random old desktop with an Nvideo Quadro 4000, will I be able to use it or it won't work if I already have an Nvidea gpu?

(I'm french, sorry if something is not well explained)

Dropped an SSD(Samsung 860 evo) onto the floor from 50-60 cm height. When will it show signs of hardware corruption from smartctl if any?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 12:20 PM PDT

Don't ask why, but I accidently dropped a brand new ssd onto the floor from 50-60 cm height. When will it show signs of hardware corruption from smartctl if any?

Telling me not to drop them in the future won't be helpful, Captain obvious

Looking at smartctl output, it shows:

    Unknown_Attribute 0x0012 099 099 000 Old_age Always - 1

but no idea what that is

    no reallocated sectors yet

    Backintime vs Backintime (root)

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 10:03 AM PDT

I started using back in time for my back ups. I have it set to backup the home folders of all three users on this machine (mine and my two kids') but when a backup runs I get all kinds of permission errors, mostly for my kids home folders. Should I be using backintime (root) if backing up other users' home folders or is there some other setting I need to tweak?

Thanks to all who read this and take the time to reply.

Laptop randomly shuts down while on battery power at varying percentage levels? Issue is persistent on Ubuntu and Antergos, but not on Windows 10

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 09:46 AM PDT

Hardware: 2014 MSI GS70 20D. I'm currently running Windows 10 on an SSD and Ubuntu 18.04 on my HDD. Whenever I'm on Ubuntu, and Antergos (before replacing it with Ubuntu), my laptop when it's on battery power would randomly shutoff at varying percentage levels. I have seen it completely shut off around 40-60% battery level, and most recently at 90%. This is not an issue while I'm on Win10, so I'm not entirely sure if this is linux related. HWMonitor on Windows state that my battery wear is still at 17%. Ubuntu was installed last night to see if this issue would persist from Antergos and unfortunately it did. Only thing I have done after installing is updating the appropriate drivers for nvidia Optimus so if there is anything else I need to do to prevent this issue, please let me know. Otherwise, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Freezing with nvidia proprietary drivers and nvidia-drm.modeset=1 on Arch Linux

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:37 PM PDT

Huge wall of text, sorry ;)

    Setup

I have an Optimus laptop with a GTX 1050, Intel i7 7700HQ, a 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. I'm using an extra monitor that's plugged into the HDMI port.

    Neofetch: https://i.imgur.com/F6ksasw.png

Using Nvidia proprietary drivers version 396.24 (which I guess is the latest)

    kf5-config --version

    Qt: 5.11.1

    KDE Frameworks: 5.48.0

    kf5-config: 1.0

    plasmashell --version

    plasmashell 5.13.3

    uname -r

    4.17.9-1-ARCH

Previously I used bumblebee to manually specify when I wanted to use my Nvidia GPU instead of the iGPU from Intel. It worked great and was very stable, because most of the time it was using the Intel driver and it's well supported, unlike the Nvidia driver... I wasn't getting the gaming performance I needed to have, though. I noticed that with just the Nvidia driver I had about 3 times the FPS than with bumblebee (110 instead of about 40 in Dota 2).

    Cause

So I installed the Nvidia driver but of course I saw tearing everywhere. I looked online and found a fix: enabling DRM KMS (Link to wiki).

Tearing was fixed, but I came across a couple of problems after this:

    Problems

    • Sometimes when resizing windows by dragging them to the top of the screen my laptop freezes for about 10-20 seconds. I can still move my mouse and my keyboard also works. It's only visual. This also happens often when dragging a window from my main screen to my extra monitor that's positioned above my laptop. I guess this second case happens because when dragging a window to the top of the monitor, it briefly tries to resize it when it hits the top of the screen. I can trigger this problem by moving a window back and forth between my monitors. There are no logs in journalctl -b when this happens.

    • When not using my mouse for a few minutes, the system has a chance of freezing, but this time, nothing responds. I can't use my mouse or my keyboard, even numlock and capslock don't work. When looking in the journalctl log, I can see a load of these errors: ArchLinux kernel: nvidia-modeset: Allocated GPU:0 (GPU-c07c20bb-45d1-9ef7-5dec-2ccd17eb1af2) @ PCI:0000:01:00.0

      ArchLinux kernel: nvidia-modeset: Freed GPU:0 (GPU-c07c20bb-45d1-9ef7-5dec-2ccd17eb1af2) @ PCI:0000:01:00.0

Sometimes I also have these errors:

ArchLinux kernel: [drm:nv_drm_gem_fence_attach_ioctl [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000100] Failed to lookup gem object for fence context: 0x00000000

ArchLinux kernel: [drm:nv_drm_gem_fence_attach_ioctl [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000100] Failed to lookup gem object for fence context: 0x00000000

    • I'm using SDDM as my login manager, but since I stopped using bumblebee, everytime I boot my laptop with my external monitor connected, everything freezes when it gets to the login screen for about 30-40 seconds, I can move my mouse but I can't click anywhere. After 30-40 seconds, I can login. Everything worked fine before enabling KMS, even without bumblebee. What's also strange is that when I used bumblebee the monitors each had their own login screen and I could move my mouse between them, now the top screen is mirroring the bottom screen. This probably changed because it's now using nvidia at login instead of intel. Here's a pastebin journalctl -b from boot to desktop: https://pastebin.com/fP5U5Hkz

    Somewhat unrelated:

    • in Nvidia settings I can't access the X Server Display Configuration, because apparently I'm using a 'PRIME display', this is what I see: https://i.imgur.com/RIOV0E4.png. Is this because I have an Optimus laptop?

    • I also can't use nvidia-xconfig to create an Xorg file because none of them work. SDDM doesn't start and booting without SDDM doesn't start X and I can't do it manually for some reason. So I have no xorg.conf, is this bad?

So how do I fix these problems? What other logs do I need to provide? Thanks.

I want to dual boot windows and Linux

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 02:33 PM PDT

I've been messing around with different distros of Linux on my laptop, and in virtual machines, and I finally want to run it on my main PC. However I still want windows, as there are many windows exclusive programs that I use, and I'm more familiar with it. I want to install Linux Mint on a partition on one of my HDDs, and keep Windows 10 on my SSD. I'm worried that Grub might break the booting process, as I am not entirely sure how to use it. What is the safest way of doing this without losing any data?

From a privacy perspective, is it safe to dual boot linux with windows, given that games stay on the NTFS windows partition, and personal data stays on the EXT4 linux partition

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 04:49 PM PDT

Also, is there any possible way to dual boot windows with an already existing linux partition? Ive only ever added linux as a secondary OS, but I'd like to now use it as my primary OS.

Also my computer is a laptop, isnt powerful enough to run a VM especially since I need access to the GPU for videogames.

Right-clicking in Firefox on Ubuntu is extremely squirrely. Is there any way to make the menu not disappear when you let go of the mouse button?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 07:21 AM PDT

This is a tad difficult to describe, but it's actually pretty simple (and annoying): if I want the right-click menu to stay, I have to hold down the right mouse button, hover over what I wanted to click on, then release the button. Otherwise the menu vanishes the second I release the button.

I have been trying to find the solution, but the best advice I could find (from like seven years ago) was to use a PS2 mouse. Surely there must be a better way!

    Give my some assignments!

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 09:50 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm very new to linux. Basically, after MUCH MUCH trial and error I got my PC to dual boot with ubuntu and Windows 10! Linux took forever to get stable, but I did it. I got a lot of cool stuff going now , like a passkey ring, dwarf fortress installed even, going to be using it for anything non-game related.

I thought this might be the place to ask....sorry if not. I want to learn more on how to do some stuff in this OS. Like basic stuff I'm not thinking about because I got my mindset on silly things like having a rotating background image (which I got!!)

I got the general idea of Ubuntu/ Linux, I need more practice with my CLI. Basically, I'm working on studying 902 of CompTIA A+, and I just really fell in love with Linux, and would like to know what unique things I can do with it that I can't with windows.

    Thanks!!

Unallocated space shows as unusable in Linux Mint In

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 09:33 AM PDT

    Hey there Linux noob here,

I want both Windows and Linux in my computer, therefore I followed few tutorials on the internet to install Linux Mint Cinnamon 19 with dual-boot. According to tutorials, in windows disk management I shrinked C: drive's space for Linux installation. However, I can't install it because space I created is unusable in Mint installation.

I searched on the internet and I have found few examples to my problem but unfortunately their disc partitions are different then mine so I don't want to delete all of my disc accidentally.

Windows 8.1, Intel i3 3210, GTX 1050TI, 6GB RAM. My BIOS Mode is Legacy.

    Gparted

    sda2 = C: drive

    sda3 = D: drive

    sda5 = E: drive

    Linux Mint Installation

    Thanks in advance!

    Need help installing Ubuntu

    Posted: 25 Jul 2018 08:50 PM PDT

I am trying to install Ubuntu over Windows 10 and use it as my primary OS. I followed the instructions on the website to create a bootable USB drive and then restarted my computer to start the installation. I never got to the installation and instead I get a message that says "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions." After some messing around with the BIOS settings I managed to get to the Ubuntu loading screen by exiting that message once it came up but it sat there for a while and then got another message that said "(inittramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system". I'm new to Linux and never had a problem installing Linux Mint when I did a while back on my computer and I completely lost. Any help would be appreciated.

I love Mate and Mutiny.. but I have some issues

    Posted: 26 Jul 2018 07:06 AM PDT

Yes, I'm one of those odd Unity users, and although Mate Mutiny is close, there's some very odd behaviour in it that I want to know if I can change. I can't seem to find many ways to change it, so any help is useful.

    Annoying behaviour is as follows:

-opening more applications seemingly hides other on the left sidebar. In unity you could scroll the bar up and down to find your open application.. this doesn't seem to be the case in Mate+Mutiny, Making me second guess whether I actually have the application I swear I opened, open.

-adding apps to the sidebar seems pointless due to the above problem

-the dash is a mess. and just isn't as intuitive or easy to use as Unity

-Mutiny seemingly struggles with prioritising which windows should open above what. For instance, I currently firefox open. I click to thunderbird, but firefox is still on screen, with thunderbird behind it.

I could install Unity.. I just dislike using software that isn't updated.

I hate installing a DE over a DE. This is something that the 'buntu communities tout as being awesome and super easy. This is something I despise. I like a concise experience with minimal bloat.

    Thanks!
